D&J HOME IMPROVEMENT

Description of Work: We hired D & J Home Improvements to build a three room addition. They told us they had experience and they could handle the job. Instead after 16 weeks of building they finally reached drywall stage. BUT we were still leaking water from the roof and hearing horrible cracking noises in the crawlspace. We had to hire a structural engineer to come in and inspect. We learned that the way they designed the joist system was failing and pulling apart under the weight. They built it against the drawings that were approved by the County insisting their way was better. They had no footers under the piers they built and used too small of nails. The roof was not connected to the current home so no amount of tar they were placing against the leaks would ever stop the water...any weight on the roof and it would all cave in. Additionally there were no hurricane straps or H clips fastened to the roof. The shingles were placed wrong and on seams. And even when we bought them felt and ice guard to go under the roofing material, they still didn't place it there. The inside framing was not sound and as explained by the engineer would not hold up in a storm! We were failed by the County and under the engineer and County's advisement the entire structure had to be torn down and re-built. Not only were we out the fee we paid them of $10,000.00, but also the cost of materials involved, another $25,000.00! Not only were these men unprofessional with their conduct on site, but when told of the problems they walked off the job! We now are involved in a fight with the insurance company of theirs trying to get things covered. Save yourself the headache and go with a well reviewed company. Don't sell out for a dollar saved, it will cost 10x what you think to repair when it's done wrong!
