At our first meeting, Peter took the time to thoroughly explain his process from initial sanding to final finishing. We knew we wanted a darker stain than the original, and he explained how different wood types and even different boards of the same type of wood, will absorb the stain differently according to grain, cut, density, etc. Peter determined that our old floor was white oak, and he showed us examples of different stains on white oak and even stained a test strip of our old floor. After helping us determine the correct stain to get our desired outcome, we were ready to refinish the floors. With less than a week before Peter was to start the refinishing, we decided that we would like to install matching flooring in the living room, which was the only non-wood room on the first floor. Concerned that this might be too much to add to the project this close to the start, we contacted Peter. Luckily for us, he agreed to take on this additional 530 square feet of new flooring on short notice and ordered the white oak to match the existing floors. The project went very well, with the installation of the new flooring first, and then the sanding of the total first floor, staining and finishing. Peter and his crew were extremely hard working and always courteous and willing and able to answer our questions during the process. Of course there was dust involved, but nothing like we had expected. Their vacuum equipped sanders etc. did a great job at minimizing the dust. Our floors look amazing! It looks like brand new flooring and you cannot tell the difference between the old section and the new wood in the living room. We love the updated finish and the change it has made to the whole house! We are extremely happy with the outcome and thankful to Peter and his crew for the fantastic work! We are convinced that we chose the right company for the job.
Description of Work: We had originally asked Mr. Peter Apostel of American European Hardwood Floors to refinish 1100 plus square feet of oak flooring on our first floor, consisting of four rooms and a large entryway. The flooring was 14 years old and had a dated color and worn finish.

Peter and his team did an exquisite job. The new parts of the floor are indistinguishable from the old. They got it done in a week, were reasonably priced for the job they did, and were a pleasure to work with.
Description of Work: We moved into a condo and wanted the carpet taken out on the stairs and second floors. The previous owners had put the carpet in to hide damage to the original hardwood floors, had used cement to level the floor, and had done a sloppy job putting in a new floor vent. In other words, it needed a lot of fixing.

The screening went well...the new floor - not so well. We asked that the new flooring match the existing adjacent flooring as close as possible and - since Mr. Apostle had years and years of experience - and we didn't - we went with the type wood he recommended. It was only after the new floor had been put down, sanded and stained that the ugly, very busy grain of the new wood became apparent...looking more like a crazy op art piece and nothing at all like the floor we had asked Mr. Apostle to match. In fact, it was so bad that before applying any finish coats, we asked that it be torn out and replaced. The second time around, Mr. Apostle showed us stained and finished samples of the new wood before putting any down...a process - if it had been done before - would have prevented the entire fiasco in the first place. And even though the three finish coats of polyurethane...and the sanding in between each coat...had not been done to the first floor, Mr. Apostle still insisted on charging us the full amount for both the first floor...and for the second floor.
Description of Work: We had Mr. Apostle rip out an old damaged hardwood floor and install a new hardwood floor in a bathroom. We also had him screen/refurbish the old floors in two adjacent rooms.

When they pulled up the carpet in the den there was cork under there and they had to install and match the flooring the already existed elsewhere. Probably 50 years old, I cannot tell the difference. There were stains and he could work with it, he did a wonderful job. I am going to higher them again to finish the rest of the flooring next year.
Description of Work: Take up Carpet, and refinished hardwood that already existed.
