I am VERY HAPPY that we chose Jim and Chase to do the work on our house. The next time we have work to do, we'll call them in, and we won't even bother getting another quote. Jim and Chase are top-notch craftsmen. They are also super friendly, and a breeze to work with. I can't imagine hiring anyone else to work on our house. When Jim visited the house to give us a price, we had already had 4 contractors through the house for quotes. Each of these guys was recommended to us by people we knew who had recently had work done. Jim came strongly recommended to us from our architect. I was sold on Jim right from the start. And the reason is because of what he said about our garden! Seriously. We have a decade-old, built-up garden in the backyard, which we enjoy very much. The other 4 contractors had responded to our worries about the garden getting damaged by saying that they would drive the skid-steer and digger carefully around the plants during the foundation dig, and that we shouldn't worry. Not Jim. As it turns out, Jim is not only a master carpenter but also a very accomplished gardener. Jim recommended that we dig the plants up and pot them for the summer, and warned us that there was no way that even the smallest equipment could leave the garden untouched. Jim's honesty and straightforward approach to the garden -- and ultimately to every aspect of the quote and the job itself -- is what sets him apart from the competition. Oh, and the price too! Jim solidly beat out two of our other quotes, and was marginally more than the other two quotes. And the results are AMAZING. In fact now that everything is done I can't believe the price. Jim is really cost efficient because he's got a small crew and because he is involved in basically every aspect of the job. And as a result he's able to pass on significant savings to the homeowner. Jim and Chase worked quickly and with no hassle. We were away on vacation for about two weeks when the job first started, and Chase stayed in contact with me via text, daily. He sent pictures and let me know what they were working on. Jim also called regularly. And when we returned we obviously saw Jim and Chase everyday, and they always went out of their way to walk us through all the details. Anyone reading this will remember the hugely wet summer we had in 2015. It rained 10" in July alone. The rain set us back a little time-wise, but Jim and Chase gave it their all so we could get back into the house on the initial timeline. At the end of the day we were probably a week longer than we had intended. Not bad considering we were set back by about 15-20 days because of the rain. One of the most impressive parts of the job was Jim's skill as a designer. The initial set of drawings that the architect produced had a tray ceiling around the new dining room, to bring the new and old ceiling heights into line. Jim told us it would look too cave-like, and proposed instead that he could neatly tuck the new support beams into the ceiling of the existing dining room/kitchen and then build create a uniform ceiling across the new and old construction. He also proposed different door designs, a new cabinet lay-out, and also a new framing design for the walk-out deck above the addition. He also re-designed a central support post in the kitchen. Jim managed all the changes to the drawings through his own architect ... and are we pleased with the results! Now we have a seamless addition with 8'2" ceilings, which feels really open and which has an amazing view of the garden through a 5'x5' window and a 6' sliding glass door. It's everything we hoped for! Jim and Chase replaced our old 3/8" thick tongue and groove flooring with 3/4" thick red oak, 1.5" wide. (We live in a 100 year old house, and wanted to match the width of the flooring upstairs.) Jim ordered the hardwood floor from a wholesaler in TN, and it was absolutely amazing. The flooring was rated 'select', and there were no knots, no blemishes. In my opinion the hardwood floor is basically a 'clear' grade, i.e. the best grade. Everyone who comes into the house remarks how beautiful the floors are. Near the end of the job Chase let me know that he could make us concrete counter tops. He brought in some samples, and we went with it. Chase built us great counter tops, with a nicely detailed nose and with a beautifully polished finish. We love them! Jim and Chase finished the job in early September. And since then Jim has called a couple of times to ask how we are enjoying the house and if everything is working out. I am SO GLAD that we didn't go with anyone else on this job, and as I said above, if we do more work we'll save ourselves a lot of worry and effort and just call Jim and Chase from the start.
Description of Work: Jim and Chase did a small (roughly 200 square foot) extension on the back of our house, knocked out the load-bearing wall between the kitchen and the dining area, and built a great walk-out deck from the second story over the extension. Jim and Chase also replaced all our hardwood floors and poured fantastic concrete counter tops for our kitchen.

Jim and Chase did a great job with our project. The projecd was slated to be about 12 weeks and ended up taking 3. Jim was quick to respond to communication requests and provided honest feedback. As new homeowners and first time renovaters, we really weren't sure what we were doing but Jim provided information to our infinite questions and then some. He provided suggestions on design, which we were happy to hear and take as he has been doing this a long time. I know there were a couple negative reviews, but I think they were due to communication misunderstandings. Jim is a phone kind of guy. I know we live in an era of texting and email, but we always called whenever we had a question, concern, or etc. for him. If you want to talk to him, just pick up the phone! He's more than happy to talk! We have recommened Jim to our friends, realtor, and coworkers. We would hire him again, and plan on doing so soon!
Description of Work: We hired Jim to do the heavy part of our renovation on a house that needed to be gutted to the studs. He moved walls and their corresponding electric outlets, demolition, roof work, carpentry, water proofing in the basement, repairing plaster, putting up new dry wall ceilings, rebuilt the front porch, and removed a wood burning stove. We also added a sliding door, deleted a door, and added insulation to the house.

EXCELLENT VALUE! I would hire them again. He allowed us to go about our full-home remodel in phases - bidding on each one separately while also letting buy certain finishes separately. Hence, we VERY rarely discussed allowances. It made the whole experience very straight forward.

My experience was not very great. There were delays in the job and the tile work was not very good. Actually they subcontracted the work to another plumber. But, I can recommend Jim for wood work. He is a nice guy. He even offered to even fix the tile work, but I rejected it.

I saw an advertisement recently for a show on DIY TV, called and quot;Rescue my Renovationand quot;. That is what we have been trying to do for the past 4 months after Jim Davis walked away from our job, leaving it unfinished and much of the work that was done had to be redone. The problem started when the floors were finished, we had the entire first floor refinished as well as the newly installed floor . When I arrived home the day that they were finished I realized that the new floor did not match the old, as far as the quality of wood. Jim said that the floor was and quot;selectand quot; but it had many knot holes, divets in the boards that he said could easily be filled. I spoke with the floor finisher, who we hired ourselves, and he said that he had never seen and quot;selectand quot; grade with knots that needed to be filled. Select should be clear of knots, and need no filling. I called 6 local wood floor suppliers, including the on that Jim told me he had purchased ours at, and asked if their and quot;selectand quot; grade white oak flooring had knots. 3 said absolutely no knots, and 3 said minimal knots, but definitely nothing that would need to be filled. I was very unhappy and called Jim asking him how the floor he installed could possibly be and quot;selectand quot;. He responded by saying that maybe we should not pay him the balance of what we had agreed upon ($3000) and he would walk away from the job. I asked him to wait and we would contact him. We ended up asking him to finish the things that we thought still needed to be done, the outside lights did not work and the deck under the addition needed to be properly sealed. We would pay him the difference between what we owed and the cost of tearing out and replacing the floor. When he came to fix the lights, he said he would have to drill a hole into our bedroom floor in order to reach the new junction box, which he had installed before putting in the new ceiling. He said he and his assistant would get their tools and come back in to do the job, he drove away and never returned or communicated with us again. We have since had to replace the floor, not only was it the wrong grade, it was not properly installed and was cracking. The sub floor in the addition was not nailed down, the unfinished space under the deck had been left completely open to the elements and the possibility of animals getting into our sub flooring, not to mention the loss of heat. had to be sealed. The outside fireplace vent was sealed into the new wall. We were not able to extend it to the exterior of the house as it should have been. The LVL joint did not span the length of the addition. We had to retrofit it so that it would support the bookshelf that was a part of the original plan. The trim work did not match existing and the joints were terribly off, all of it had to be replaced, and refinished. The gutters on the addition are falling off and the roof leaks, in two places. The speaker wiring had to be completely redone, as the outside and inside wires had been switched and sealed into the wall. The outside light had to be connected properly (which did not entail drilling a hole in our bedroom floor.) There is a 3/4 inch difference between the inside edge and outside edge of the new wall. The new stucco does not match the old. We have spent another $15,000 correcting the mistakes that were left by Jim Davis. I strongly discourage anyone from ever hiring Jim Davis.
Description of Work: We hired Jim last summer to move a set of french doors that separated our family room from a den space. The job seemed to go smoothly and he spoke with my husband about bumping out our family room space, which was a major project. We hired him and worked with Brian Zingleman, (fantastic job on his part) to draw up the plans for the new space. The job involved moving the outer wall, with floor to ceiling window, relocating the door to the deck and creating a new doorway to the kitchen which would mirror the one on the other side of our fireplace. A light fixture needed to be re positioned, new wood floor installed, crown molding and baseboards installed to match existing. Also we had to have outside and inside speakers moved. Our goal, which we made very clear, was that the addition should look like it was original, and not done 8 years after building our home.

Jim and his crew were phenomenal to work with. Very down to earth, very focused on making the customer happy. The sub-contractors had all worked with Jim for years, so they worked well together. My wife and I couldn't be happier with the finished product. It took slightly longer than we had hoped (mainly because of detail choices we made like having the doors custom made to match exactly), but we are thrilled. We are using Jim again to rebuild our deck, and I would recommend him to anyone. His style is fairly low key (which worked for us)... informal, hand shake agreements, and he delivered on all of our agreements. I'm sure he would be happy to do more detailed contracts and timelines and work plans, but with us we found if we had any concerns, a quick call to Jim and our problems were solved. He was very trustworthy and his crew was pleasant and reliable. We even used his painters to paint a few bedrooms since we were so pleased with the quality of their work.
Description of Work: Jim finished the complete build out of a 70x18 ft unused attic space, adding a dormer, a bathroom, and converting it into two bedrooms, and office area, and a living space (in addition to the bathroom). He built a new hallway and modified the roofline to change the entrance into the new space, and you cannot tell it was "added on" -everything has been done to match the rest of the house. The build included hardwood floors, carpeting in the bedrooms, beautiful tile and stone work in the bathroom, custom made doors to match the rest of the house, sky lights, and very nice detail trim work on all the doors and windows (and a porthole window in the shower matching the other similar windows in the house)..

Jim responded to our call in the morning by offering to come over at noon to look at the issue. He arrived and explained quickly and thoroughly the possible causes and that he thought the issue was one of poor workmanship on the drywall, pointing out several flaws that showed how the workmanship wasn't good. His assessment confirmed the opinion of a structural/foundation contractor who had evaluated the issue a couple of weeks ago. After considering the different options, Jim recommended another contractor that does smaller jobs such as this and gave us his contact information. We are looking forward to hearing from this other contractor and getting the work done for a reasonable price. It's great to have someone as knowledgeable as Jim come by and give his opinion free of charge within 1 hour of our calling him. Thanks Jim!
Description of Work: we have several cracks in our interior drywall walls on an addition that was added ~20 years ago by the previous owners. Because the house had settling issues even further back (that were corrected), we wanted a professional to help determine possible causes and suggest repair options.

I had a terrible experience with Jim and would strongly warn against using him. Jim told us he would be able to start working on relocating a vent-free gas fireplace on tuesday or wednesday this week. When he didn't turn up on either day, and had not called, I telephoned him, and he said he will do the work next week. A little worried, I decided to run over again our understanding of the work. There was a small area of drywall that was part of the project we had discussed at our initial meeting that he did not recall discussing and had not factored into the project. Nevertheless, he said it was fine, and I could arrange my schedule to expect him next monday. Later that day, I received an email saying after reviewing his schedule, he was no able to do the work in part due to this area of drywall, despite the fact it was definitely part of our original understanding and a small part of the overall work. He did not suggest to reschedule, but just cancelled all together. Shocked, I tried to call and email him, to which I still have received no reply. Although Jim scheduled our initial meeting promptly, seemed nice when we met, and had very reasonable estimates, he was also very difficult to get a hold of, not good at responding to messages left, or at placing calls he said that he would. It was very difficult to schedule the actual work, and he was reluctant to give a written estimate. But the final straw was definitely him pulling out of the job at the last minute despite both verbal and written agreement to proceed. and without a phone call. We took a chance with him and regretted it. Don't make the same mistake.
Description of Work: Jim gave us an estimate to relocate a ventless gas fireplace, rebuilding the mantel and repairing drywall and small patch of wood flooring. Although we agreed to move forward, he pulled out of the work at the last minute in a very unprofessional way.

Response from JIM DAVIS BUILDERS
I originally met with the Customer the week of 9/17. At that time the Customer let me know that phone and email were great ways of communicating during the project. Knowing that, on 9/23 I sent her and email letting her know due to my tight schedule, I would start the project no later than October 13th. I also let her know a price and detailed what we had discussed the work would entail. At that time, I knew I had a small break around October 1st and let her know if I could, I would start the project then. She responded on 9/26 with additional questions, and I responded 9/27 with answers. As I projected, I had a small gap in my other projects and let her know I should be able to start around October 1st. Before starting we reviewed the project once more, in which additional work was added on her part. I had not calculated this work in my time or cost of the project. On 10/3/12, I sent the Customer an email letting her know I no longer had time for her project, apologizing for the inconvenience. During the entire time we were working together, I remained professional as I do with all projects. I responded within 24 hours of any phone or email requests, even on weekends. I never collected a deposit for the project, and communicated with her as requested during our initial meeting. The entire interaction took place during a 17 day time period. The entire time, I stuck to my work on when the work would be complete and the project details. I feel her review is an inaccurate account of what really occured and I have saved the entire stream of email communication between the two of us. If you wish to review those emails to confirm my professionalism and honesty, please feel free to ask and I will be happy to show these to you. Thank you, Jim Davis

Jim started the project on 1/12/2012 and completed the project on 1/27/12. Initially the plan was to put vinyl siding on exterior fireplace, but he could not find a match so we went with vinyl shakes. After he completed the job, he noted that the chimney cap did not need to be replaced and the flashing were fine as well. He was unable to shore up the gutter without taking it off and he indicated that he did not do gutters. He was paid in full for the work performed. During the time he worked here he was very cooperative and communicated effectively. Several months ago, I got quotes to replace the gutters. Both companies noted that the flashings were improper for vinyl abutting shingles. Additionally, Jim failed to put a starter strip at the bottom of the vinyl shakes. When it got hot, the bottom row bowed out significantly. I had to pay another contractor $673 to take off the vinyl shakes, install proper kickout flashings, replace the vinyl shakes and fabricate a starter strip for the bottom row of vinyl shakes. All of this cost could have been avoided if done at the time I hired Jim to perform these tasks. When the vinyl siding was removed by the contractor, there was evidence of water running behind the fireplace AGAIN. So, my original problem was never fixed. I sent a certified letter to Jim on 7/17/2012 and he refused to sign for it. I had my return address on the envelope. I was trying to give Jim the opportunity to rectify the situation. I am very disappointed in the quality of the workmanship. I do not believe this was caused by dishonesty or laziness. I believe he did not have the knowledge of commonly accepted practices and/or standards as it related to this specific application. In other words, he wasn't qualified to do the vinyl aspect of the job.
Description of Work: I hired Jim Davis Builders to repair my water damaged external fireplace. The work entailed removal of existing stone and mortar, replace rotting framework, joists, studs, chimney cap and build valleys behind it on existing roof and shingle, including flashings so water would drain properly into the gutters. I also requested that he shore up the gutters as they were mortared into the fireplace and were at an improper angle. Basically, I wanted to repair the damage and prevent any more water leaking behind the fireplace.

No certified letter was ever left at my door or signed for. We never even received a letter. Had I received a phone call in response to her concerns I would have promptly returned to the site to fix anything she was unhappy with. Since receiving this review I have made attempt to reach out to her and have received no response.

My overall experience with Mr. Davis's team was excellent. His team was very trustworthy and professional. I would hire them again in a heartbeat for any other project and would recommend him to others. I found Mr. Davis through my architect. I was short on time and needed a project done in about 2 weeks. He had a lull in another project he was working on so our timelines fit perfectly. My only minor issue was the final follow up-didn't check in with me to make sure everything was completed to my satisfaction. I had some sticker shock on the initial estimate, but he negotiated some on the initial price and gave me a written proposal itemizing he costs, which seemed reasonable. Then, much to my surprise, he finished in 5 days instead of 8 and he came down about $900 less than our negotiated price. The subcontractors were all professional, skilled workers who had been working in the business for decades. Overall, would hire him again and recommend him to others.
Description of Work: I hired Mr. Davis to fill flip a closet from one room to another, take out a wall and put in a partial wall with pocket doors, fill in a door way to make it a wall, move a doorway. This required sub contractor work for electrical, duct work and dry walling.

We originally got an estimate from Jim, and have since had the job completed. Jim and Chase and Matt did a wonderful job. Their work was excellent and my husband and I didn't find anything that needed touch up or was neglected. When I called him initially to get a bid and for every phone call that followed, if I didn't speak with Jim directly he returned every voicemail message in an extremely timely manner. Something we have not experienced with other contractors. He said he would be at our home at 7:30 am and was there at exactly that time. He finished the job in the time he estimated and everyone did a great job of cleaning up - something that I hadn't expected! We are planning some other home improvement projects and will call Jim for all of those. We won't have to spend any more time calling and trying to get someone to give us estimates...we will call Jim for everything.

Jim was one of 3 contractor called to bid. His reaction after seeing the size of the project was to suggest I get an Architect to do the detail design. Brian Zingelmann was selected, who was also wonderful to work with. Which I did. Great suggestion. Select Jim Davis who was great to work with and did a great deal of the work himself, using subs for the trades such as electrical work. Finished nearly on time (within days) with only a few small surprises. Jim Davis is clearly one of the good guys!

Jim came out and looked at what the job entailed. He then called me with the prices for each part of the job. I told him I would check with other providers and get back to him. I told him he had the job before I left for vacation in April. We agreed that I would call him when I returned to set up an exact time. I called him upon returning, and we agreed to a date two weeks in the future. That was the last I heard from him. He never called--even though I called him to see about a contract, etc. He never called back and he never showed up to do the work.

Jim Davis was punctual and professional. The price was reasonable, the reason I went with the other guy was because he had a little bit more experience. I would have a positive recommendation for Jim Davis.

Jim was quick to reply to our request for an estimate for a new front porch. We knew he had a feel for exactly what we wanted when he described the type of porch he envisioned. He was personable and professional, and very knowledgeable with many years experience as a home builder/remodeler. He has an easy, laid back way about him, and gave us an estimate a couple of days later with a hand shake, and a promise that there would be no surprises. True to his word, he began the project on the date promised. All of the work on the porch itself was completed by Jim and his brother Mitchell. They did a beautiful job! Their craftsmanship is impeccable! Jim subcontracted the roof replacement, siding replacement, painting, and gutters. Everyone he works with did a fine job, and the end result far exceeded our vision. We have a gorgeous wood front porch, and we are completely satisfied!
Description of Work: Build a front porch on house where none existed before. Replace existing roof on house to match new roof on porch.

We were left high and dry by a contractor who didn't finish the job due to the trickle down of the bad economy (so he went out of business!), and Jim came in and has started to help us get a bathroom again! In this job, he (and two also competent guys) replaced our window. We had bought the window, so they had to tear out the old one and set in the new one. We will have him come back to do more work on the bathroom. He also gave us good recommendations for others to help with the tiling, etc. He seems really honest, fair and good at what he does. He is clearly knowledgeable and practical. We felt he did a solid job. Also, my husband did not get an estimate before agreeing to the work, so he could have gouged us once the work was done, but was really fair. I was relieved and pleased, especially after the bad experience we just had with the other contractor.
Description of Work: Set in a new window and tore out the old one.

We had a sunroom built several years ago to the back of the house, and it leaked from day one. The company couldn't seem to figure out how to fix the leak, so we decided to have the 2nd story built for a different way to attach the sunroom to the original dwelling. Jim and his subs did a great job, under the hot summer conditions. The leak is fixed, and the finished house is unbelievable. We're very happy with the work, workers and price. We lived in the house during the construction, with minimal upheaval. All the workers were friendly, courteous, and tried to keep the mess to a minimum considering the mess demolition makes. I wouldn't do it again anytime soon, but I would consider serious construction again using these guys.
Description of Work: Added a second story, a 2-car garage, and a 22x8 front porch to a 60's ranch.
