Response from Hurst Total Home Inc
While we are sorry for the feelings expressed in this review, this customer called in wanting a backsplash job done and due to our backlog we referred her to another company. The other company failed to follow through apparently due to a car accident the day of their scheduled appointment; however, we were not contracted to do work, nor were a middle man. Hurst Total Home simply gave her another resource to have the work done. All we did was give her a contact name & number for someone else who she might try to contact to do the work. We did follow through with communication on our end, even though we were in no way involved with her project. We would love to still help the owner is the project still needs completed but we would be at least 2 months out, possibly further, due to our current workload which is why we referred her to another company for her project.

We contacted Hurst and Jeff came out the next day. He spent ~20 minutes inspecting the window, writing down serial numbers and taking measurements, and told us it could take a week for the window to get to him from Simonton. 72-hours later he called, letting us know he had the replacement window and, and quot;would have someone in the area the following day if we were available.and quot; Unfortunately, we weren't, so we scheduled the repair for June 23rd. The gentleman from Hurst arrived on-time (1100) and was in and out in no more than 15 minutes; simply removing the cracked window and replacing with new. Our experience with Hurst, from start to finish, was great. They did not leave brochures or try to pressure us on other services they offered, they simply came in, got the work done and left. It was refreshing to be contacted by a live-person who left real phone numbers, not 1-800 phone banks. Further, it was very nice to have set appointments - that were kept - versus four-hour blocks when someone may - or may not - show up (Sears). If I had one complaint it would be a trivial one and was on the price ($85), which wasn't too bad considering it included the Window itself.
Description of Work: We replaced all the windows in our house in 2008 with Simonton Windows using a local contractor (no longer in area/business). One of the windows cracked this winter - or was broken by our oldest son - and with the warmer weather it needed to be repaired/replaced. When we contacted Simonton they indicated that Hurst Total Home was the only company they used/recommended in the Dayton area.

Called them for an estimate on installing electric and plumbing to install a dishwasher in my kitchen. He said he would call me back the next day with the estimate. It took him over a week to respond and that was only after I called him back to make sure he hadn't forgot about me. His estimate was over $1300! We got the service performed from someone else for $400.

Response from Hurst Total Home Inc
Our staff proposed a "complete project including required permits" for the plumbing and the electrical portion of this homeowners work request. There was no appliance previously in the location. Code requires a dedicated circuit from the panel to the appliance to do this legally. I am certain if whomever did the project would have done the work per the building department regulations, application submitted for permits, inspections completed and the cost of permits added to this project that the scope of work would have been more in line with what we proposed and the costs would have reflected that also. Once again this is an inaccurate comparison of a professional scope of work and legal installation to a fly-by--night (or maybe an illegal installation). However it may suffice the homeowner and the dishwasher may work, there is no safe guard for inferior work or products and methods used to protect the consumer. We choose to do things the right way for the benefit of the consumer and we do so at a fair price. Based on us consulting with a licensed electrician and licensed plumber they told us what would be required to pass the building department requirements (and what they would charge me). I can only assume that the individual that completed the work for the homeowner probably did not pull permits because the cost we obtained for electrical and plumbing services far exceeded what this homeowner paid for the entire project. Let alone the cabinet modifications to make room for the dishwasher etc. Usually the undesirables that choose to avoid regulations don't really do the work at a better cost they only do part of the work. Respectfully, Jeff Hurst, CR (Certified Remodeler) President Hurst Total Home, Inc.

I guess I already did tell you the whole story! The only hitch in the project came from the cabinet company who chose the wrong shipper and we were delayed by that only. The project is gorgeous!! They helped me stay within my budget and helped me get the most bang for my buck on that budget.
Description of Work: This wonderful company tore out an original bathroom, linen closet and all the walls. They designed and built a new shower with all the bells and whistles, a double vanity, new linen cabinet, medicine cabinet and all the necessary wiring and plumbing. They did a wonderful and professional job. They helped me to design the bathroom to meet all my needs and concerns and it looks wonderful! They also moved the laundry facilities from a laundry closet and turned a small room into a laundry room including cabinetry, a laundry tub, solid surface counters and a beautiful new floor. They turned the old laundry closet into a beautiful pantry. I couldn't be happier with the end results. All this was done with very little interruption and practically no mess to me. They cleaned up everything every day and hauled off all the trash and did their utmost to keep any inconvenience to the family to a minimum. The lead carpenter, Clark, was wonderful and professional. They were here everyday when they said they were going to be and all the employees were clean and there was no "shop" talk and no smoking! I cannot say enough about this wonderful company. You are definitely in safe hands when you let them have your project! You don't have to worry about showing up on Mike Holmes or be in the paper left with an expensive mess! They are absolutely the BEST!!

I have not had any work done yet. His planning process is very good. He is very fast and very thorough. I have gotten everything back from him. I am still waiting on a couple other bids. I thought the quote was a little high. I think I will be going with one of two others who are smaller companies who came in around $40,000. They seem to have a lot of the same ideas and thought processes. They are owner-operated and the owners come out and do a lot of the work. It was a salesman I talked to at Hurst.
Description of Work: I am still in the finding a contractor stage, and he is one that I am talking to. We are completely gutting our kitchen, taking out a half wall in the pantry, putting in all new cabinets, changing the floor plan, going with granite countertops, changing the half bath, flooring, cabinets, countertops, sink, new flooring in laundry room, flooring in the family room, and flooring down the hall all the way down to the front foyer.

Getting the project going was a bit slow. We played a lot of phone tag and sometimes it took longer than expected to get return phone calls and e-mails from them. The cost of such a minor remodel for the bathroom was higher than we anticipated, but we liked the company's reputation and references, so we did not get other estimates. Katie at Hurst worked very hard to get us the improvements we wanted and needed, while staying within our budget. Once the project was scheduled, it started on time and ended within the time estimate we were given. Things went very smooth with the actual work. Every day, things were cleaned up well and the project leader did his best to minimize any incovenience to us. The final price was exactly what was estimated and there were no surprises. They were very professional and worked hard to ensure everything was to our satisfaction. The bathroom looked even better than I imagined when they were finished. If we required other improvements to our house, we would definitely call Hurst Total Home again.
Description of Work: Removed old shower and completely replaced tile, drain pan, glass, and hardware. Removed and upgraded tile for splashguard around bathtub.

It’s now like a brand new house and looks wonderful. It’s something that I have been wanting for years and we have been married for 33 years. They said that it would take about 5 to 6 weeks to get the work done and I thought that it was fast. However, there are complications that come along with everything. There were some things that came up but whatever they did in the kitchen was pretty good. We still have two more cabinets left. I paid $31340 for the flooring and doors. I also paid $67000 for kitchen remodel, re-painting the dining room and another room, stairs, new railings, hardwood floors in my dining room, family room and stairway and ceramic tile installation throughout the kitchen entryway. All this was for the whole downstairs. I had two and a half baths to be remodeled too. They did the toilet, countertops and the tile in the upstairs bath but the shower was done by someone else. So it was almost $98340 but it’s absolutely great. They worked with me fairly well. We did have some issues where people didn’t show up or got sick which we couldn’t really help. They had people show up that hadn’t contacted them. These were the subcontractors like the floor people who had just showed up and fortunately I was here. The guy who was in charge of my project had been sick that day and he hadn’t informed me that they were coming. They just showed up from Cincinnati and so I asked them to come in to get my floor work done. There were glitches here and there but it’s kind of hard to get everything together at the right time with such a large contract. The problem I had with them continuously was that there was just one person and he was in charge of my project. A lot of the times he was the only one who came and that’s why it took so long to get it done because it was just one person working. When I asked the company about the crew that was supposed to show up to get the work done, they told me that they had other jobs that they ran behind on. So they were finishing them up. There were about two or three people who would show up every time I complained and used to get a lot of work done within a day. Then they told me that it would be better if I could move out of the house so that they could come in and do it all together at once. The guy who was in charge of the construction work told them that I had even boarded my dogs for a week so that they could come in and get the stuff done. I was continuously moving my indoor cats from room to room. I kept them in a separate room so that the workers would have the room available for them to work on. It was really hard and stressful. I think they were trying their best. They used to come right away when I was dissatisfied and asked them to fix a few things. They have still got some touch-up work to do and they are waiting for the final two cabinets. I was expecting a 48 inch window in my kitchen and they put in a 36 inch window. So they had these cabinets that were really small on either side of the window. I asked them as to why the cabinets were only 9 inches wide. I also asked them as to what I could keep in a 9inch wide cabinet. It was ridiculous. So I told them to order new cabinets on either side and I had to pay extra for them. I still have the 36 inch window but it now meets my needs. I had a spice cabinet that I could pull out and I was really excited about it. You just need to pull out and have your spices right by the stove or the stove top that I had. I could pull my spices out while cooking. I pulled out my spice cabinet and the vent was in the way since they had put my vents over my stove top. I couldn’t get to the spice cabinet. I originally thought that they had put the spice cabinet on the side and bottom of my cooktop. Evidently, I hadn’t read the design properly when they showed it to me and it was over the cook top. However, they too didn’t figure out that the vent on the stove would be sticking out. So I couldn’t get to the spice rack and it was useless. I told them to take it out. I just have a 9 inch cabinet there now and I can’t figure out what I would use it for. Then there was a wall that was measured wrongly by them. They also installed two big pantries with pull out drawers and I was thrilled about that. However, there is a telephone next to it and they had measured the bottom as well as the top cabinets wrongly on that. So they had to fix that too. The woman who designed my kitchen messed up on several different things. They had to reorder those cabinets. It just came in this last week and they installed them. So these were the little things but I guess I could have been really mad because I paid for this design. There were things all over the place. I went to them in February and paid for the kitchen design. That’s when they came up with this design and I was very happy with it. We sat down and we had it designed. Then everything kind of fell apart when they started this project back in April. There were all these little pieces here and there. Of course along the way, I knew there would be things that I myself would change and I would have to pay for it which I did. The color of the rug that I had ordered for one of the rooms was wrong. I then realized that it was the same color that I had in one of my upstairs bedroom. So I had to pay for another carpet and they got that in very quickly. They came out within a week and installed it. That was great since these were all subcontractors. I have been happy with most of the things that they did but there were things like the design flaws with which I wasn’t thrilled. There was once when they didn’t even show up for two weeks and that was because the guy in charge of my house was sick. It was all legit but they could have had workers show up. He had a list of things that needed to be done and I could have also given him a list of things to be done. I got really frustrated in the last three or four weeks because I had plans for the summer to take my kids and do things. We haven’t been able to do anything and I have been sitting in my house every single day due to these people. The guy wasn’t really motivated when he was here by himself, but they got a lot done when they had two or three people out. He was just like a ball of fire at that time. He used to get two or three things done when he was here by himself and then he would go home at 3:30. He sometimes used to tell me that he would be there till 10 and there were times when he used to sleep in his car for two hours several days in a row. So I informed the company and they told me that he gets an hour for lunch. That’s when I told them that he left at 11 and didn’t come back till 1:30. It just seemed a little bit difficult to do things that we had contracted them for. I liked the people I was dealing with since they were very nice. They were very professional when they were here but it was really hard to get the job done. They told me that they would finish the work in the first week of June. However, they couldn’t get it done even by the third week and told me that they would finish it by the end of June. It’s now the end of July and I am still waiting on the final touch-up. There were times when they left and they hadn’t even vacuumed the mats. I went around with my vacuum cleaner and vacuumed the floor. The person who was in charge was responsible for this and I did complain about it. He had a pinched nerve once and he couldn’t even move his arms. Then he had a seizure in the parking lot while he was talking to his boss and he could never find out what that was. He also got flu. Then his son fell and slit his head open one day. So it was just one thing after another and I felt really sorry for him. He just left for lunch and never came back. He had told us that he left a message for Jay Hurst and me. However, Jay and I never got any message from him. It was kind of strange that neither one of us got a message from him. I was concerned since I wondered if he had an accident. Then Jay called me later that night and told me that the guy was in the hospital with his son. So things like that can happen and may be he didn’t call since he was really shocked. They did the job fairly well when they showed up to do the work but now it has taken really long. I was sitting down looking at a bookcase which had nails that they had put through. It was by the end of my island. So they have to repair that and I don’t know how they are going to do it because it’s one solid piece that is a part of the island. They did show up to get things done when I did talk to them but it was getting very frustrating. In fact, there was one point where I paid a week ahead. I paid fifteen thousand dollars in one week. It was supposed to be $7500 and another $7500. I informed them that I would pay for two weeks in advance because I had an appointment on the day I was supposed to pay them. Their price was very good and they worked with me. The cost of the design was included in the price when I signed the contract. So I didn’t lose that. I felt that I got a good deal and they had added things that they helped with. They even asked me if I wanted lights in the room because I am in one of these older houses which require hanging lights towards the corners. I thought that it would be absolutely wonderful. So they said that they would install the lights when I buy the ceiling fans and the lights. They then installed it in every single room for only $225 which was great. Their workmanship was very good. They were responsive since the people showed up the next day itself after I called to inform that I needed people at my house to get the work done. They were being pulled out of their work sight. They were on time and came out when they said they would come out. I will think about using their services if I have to get an overall reconstruction done. I would tell them to give me a better time frame.
Description of Work: Hurst Total Home remodeled my house completely including the kitchen and the bathroom. It included new doors, new bathrooms, new baseboards, painting, new floors and a brand new kitchen design. They had to do a bump out on the kitchen because the previous design of our house had a little bit of a bump out and they had to continue that to give me a straight line for a countertop. They started with a total remodel of the inside of my house and also a part of the outside back in April. I would have been a little happier if they had been more upfront about getting the job done on time. I do have another project and I am thinking about having them come out to give me an idea of what it would cost.

They finished the job completely, returned all calls after they were paid and even returned when we needed them to, at no charge, to go over some of the things we had done. A year after the project was finished we discovered that the wrong furnace was installed in the addition. They came out, replaced it and did the replacement at no cost to us and at our convenience. There was no arguement or dodging of the situation or anything. My husband and I have heard so many horror stories and we are absolutely blessed to have done business with such a reputable group of people. There was never any foul language or temper tantrums from anyone on this project and it is as perfect as anyone could have ever wanted. We would enthusiastically recommend the Hurst brothers to anyone needing anything done!
Description of Work: Hurst Total Home was recommended to us by someone else. We were very impressed by their professionalism when preparing the remodeling plan that we didn't even check anyone else out for the project. We added onto our 2300 sq.ft house an additional 1100 sq.ft and a large deck. The job took a little longer than projected because of the winter weather, but the company assigns an on-site lead carpenter and he was here each and every day until the project was completed. The communications between us and the remodeling crew was exemplary. My husband and I cannot say enough good things about this company and the personal service they extend to all their clients. The crew cleaned up the job site every day, they did quality and custom work in whatever way was required. They went to the nth degree to make sure we were aware of everything that was going on at all times and they brought to our attention any little detail they discovered while they were doing the work. Many times they thought of things that we never even considered. While doing the addition, they dug a sump well under the house in case we needed to install a sump at a later date. When building the deck they made sure the entire house was draining the ground water completely away from the house and they extended the exterior drains so under the deck would remain dry. My 95 year old mother-in-law lived with us at the time and they made all the floors meet each other perfectly so there was no tiny little step between the existing home and the addition that could cause her to trip. When building the deck they also built a ramp for a wheelchair and just went above and beyond anything that we could have hoped for.

We were so impressed with the professionalism of everyone who we came into contact with on this project. It started in the winter time and finished in the spring and they were here nearly every day working or letting us know why they weren't here and when they would be back. The communication was constant and complete. We had some problems which were solved all along the way in a professional manner and each and every step was explained to us and our input was welcomed and respected. What a great company to do business with. They were recommended to us and we were so very lucky to have had such a great group of professionals to work with on this project.
Description of Work: They added an 1100 sq. ft additon onto our existing home and a deck. This addition included a new kitchen, family room, master bath, master bedroom and closet. Working with Hurst Total Home was a blessing in every way. They thought of everything that needed to be done - many things that never occurred to us which would be the most cost effective and structurally sound way to do things. The experience was awesome for us and we do recommend them to everyone. The addition was more complex than we had imagined, but they worked diligently to solve each and every problem. They fulfilled all our wishes and the quality of their work was excellent in every way.

The first person I encountered, actually listened to me when I told him what I wanted. He then designed and guided me when it came to the selection process. The teams that worked on the condo was efficient, pleasant, knowledgable, very neat, respected my wishes, treated my property with respect, clean, very professional and just plain nice. The were there and if they weren't going to be there, they let me know and know why. If something didn't seem right, they either fixed it or didn't do it and always consulted with me. Every night the condo was clean and orderly. When the project was over, they completely cleaned the condo. They could not have been any nicer. This wound up to be a long prject, almost 5 months from destruction to completion and it was worth the time, effort and expense.
Description of Work: Remolded a 19 yr old condo. Kitchen, bathrooms-master and guest, floors. Everything in the kitchen was done over except the cabinets. Sink, faucets, added lighting, granite countertops, hardware, all new appliances, flooring (hardwood, laid on the diagonial) etc. The master bath was totally redesigned. Removed a jacuzzi tub, installed a heated floor, new countertops, sinks, faucets, designed a fabulous shower, made lots of excellent suggestions that I would never have thought of. Such as shower door that swings both ways so you don't drip on the floor when you come out. Wonderful dual shower head, personal sprays, double shelves. Installed new pocket doors and took out the old double doors. Went with me to help co-ordinate the choices. Explained the pros and cons of all the choices that I had. Everyone I worked with was extremely knowledgeable. Solved and repaired existing problem areas that I didn't even know about.
