The contractors did excellent work and finished ahead of schedule. The renovation included enlarging the shower, replacing floor and wall tile, installing a new vanity, and installing new lighting. I have no complaints over any part of their work. The contractor showed up on time each morning, and cleaned up each afternoon.

Two bathrooms gutted and rebuilt. Workmanship is outstanding, from the smallest detail. Finished product is beautiful. They look nothing like even the original baths. Richard went above and beyond any expectations.

Richard loves old houses and it is a good thing that he does since this one presented him with many, many challenges! However, he was more than equal to the task. Richard took on the project with great grace and professionalism. He is truly a master of many, many trades. We so appreciated his thoroughness and artistry in all that he did and we were extremely impressed with his attention to detail. His knowledge and expertise was amazing. Taking on all the problems encountered with an old house is certainly not for the faint of heart but Richard truly turned a ‘pig’s snout into a silk purse.’ In addition, we learned many new ‘how tos' regarding great products to use and the finer points of reno/remodeling work that we didn’t know before. We would certainly want him to do another project for us and would highly recommend him. He is ‘one in a million’ and was a joy to have in our home. We look forward to working with him again down the road. Highest praise and kudos to Richard for a job ‘well done!’ We LOVE our resurrected 1920's bathroom!
Description of Work: We have just finished a complete 'gut' and restoration of our early 1920’s second floor bathroom. Richard was the craftsman from Dayton Home Remodeling who did all the work from start to finish. This involved tearing out the original plaster and lathe walls covered with metal mesh for the original tile. Over the mesh was another layer of some sort and tiling around all four walls of the bathroom. The floor was composed of several layers including a cement base, the original marble flooring, and linoleum. Some of the plumbing was lead pipe and along with the electric had to be completely replaced. A cast iron tub had to be broken apart and removed. The reno included new tub, toilet, sink, vanity, light fixtures, tiled floor, tiled walls around the tub, bead board wainscoting, new light fixtures, etc. The original walls and floor had settled towards the center of the house and had to be leveled and squared as much as possible for everything to fit correctly.

The work took bit longer than anticipated but we didn't mind because the quality of the work was exceptional. Richard's attention to detail and willingness to go the extra mile to make everything perfect for us was great. Project manager Brian also made numerous visits throughout the project. Additional changes that we requested and some issues that arose once the demo was done were all handled well and we now feel confident that our dream bathroom will have no problems in the years to come.

They did a great job. I could tell that they were in high demand due to their backlog as they are highly sought after. Everyone was great during the process. George, the crew leader for the job, was phenomenal. You rarely come across someone who is a master at so many different trades and does everything with such care. Everyone was incredibly respectful of our home and cleaned up after themselves daily. We hardly noticed that they were there. We intend to have them remodel another bathroom and then some in the future.

Very nice! Richard Peyton was the person who did the work on the new bathroom including a shower tiled to a nine foot high ceiling. It turned out that Richard and I are both fans of "This Old House." As the job I went along, 11-11-16 to 12-7-16, I occasionally would visit with him on the job. It was almost like we were on the set of "This Old House." He taught me many things that will help me with my own smaller projects. He overcame defects in previous construction such as inside corners that were out of square. He was very skilled in many areas and always very professional.

You know the saying about first impressions....the impression left with us was that he wouldn't make enough money so he wasn't interested.
Description of Work: Nothing! The initial phone call was all about budget and what we wanted regarding countertops with comments that our budget wouldn't allow for "high end" materials. The following call was regarding minimum cost based on home value. Never laid eyes on our home or the work involved.

Response from Dayton Home Remodeling
I'm sorry this person misunderstood my trying to be sensitive to her $10,000 budget for a complete kitchen remodel with new cabinets and granite countertops in a $200,000 house. When I tried to explain that I had developed some rules of thumb about budgeting for kitchens and baths in my 40 years of doing this, all of which is on our website to help people get acclimated, she assumed I wasn't interested in the job. I was merely trying to give her an idea of what to expect. For example I explained in that budget range she probably could only afford laminate countertops, but she insisted she wanted granite. Hence her comment about my saying she couldn't afford "high end" materials. Well, you can't do a complete kitchen remodel with granite countertops for $10K. Period. But when I tried to explain that I was trying to be a GOOD COUNSELOR to help solve this on a tight budget, she said she just wanted me to come out and give her a price for what she wanted. Then she immediately changed her mind and said "never mind" and hung up on me. Well, it's my job to help people with good design that helps maximize the results within a person's budget, not be some hack peddler who just throws low-ball numbers out, whether it's the right thing to do for the customer or not. Some people you just can't help. If that gets me an "F" so be it. The ironic thing is that we're not a "high end" company at all. We'd have gladly done a $10,000 kitchen for this person if we could. There's an "A" Review right above this one for a $9130 job. Mike Mergler DHR

From the start I had a great first impression of the company when I met Mike to go over the project. Everything done was detailed, itemized and priced so we knew upfront what the work and materials would cost. Brian did the walk-through before the project's start to make sure there were no surprises, made sure what we needed, went over the contract again to verify the work, explained everything that would be done, gave us a time-frame for completion, and let us know that Richard Peyton would be working on our bathroom. Overall, I was impressed with both Mike's and Brian's professionalism and attention to detail. I was extremely happy that they gave us Richard Peyton for our project. I can't say enough good things about his craftsmanship, detail work, and meticulousness. In addition, tarps were laid, debris was swept, booties used - he took care in looking out for our home during this remodeling process and was considerate of our schedule as well. The bathroom looks fabulous and I know everything that isn't visible is just as well-done as everything that is visible due to Richard's commitment to his job, exactness in detail work and pride in his work. Miters are perfect and seamless, nail holes filled and invisible, tile is aligned and grouted perfectly, and I could go on and on. Our house wasn't framed completely square (which I could see for myself with a tape measure) so Richard had to spend time making sure each measurement was exact and how to align and cut materials to account for multiple measurements for tiles, drywall, etc. Based on his work you cannot tell our framing was off - everything fits perfectly and looks even better! Richard is a true craftsman and, based on our experience with this project, I would wholeheartedly recommend him, Brian, Mike and this company. I fully intend to have them redo our guest bath next year! Thank you, Richard, Brian and Mike!

This is the 2nd time that we've used Dayton Home Remodeling and both times, George did the work. I cannot say enough good things about George and his great craftsmanship, work ethic, and professionalism. Along the way, he ran into some strange things in our older house and handled them quickly and efficiently. He made great suggestions on ways to do things and they caused everything to really pull together and look wonderful. I trust his judgment and have never been unhappy yet. He shows up on time, he and his crew work hard, and they keep things clean. I would strongly suggest that you turn to Dayton Home Remodeling...I know we will for our next project. Everyone we've dealt with is fantastic. Thank you so much!

On January 15, 2016 I met with Mike and decided to contract Dayton Home Remodeling to totally remodel my bathroom. I was unclear at this time what I wanted but knew there were several items that need to be repaired. Mike addressed each item one at a time and worked up a very clear contract with all my repairs listed, as well as, the associated cost. I knew all the items I was to select and purchase and had a much better understanding of the complete job cost and the time required to get it done. After reviewing hundreds of bathroom pictures on the internet I decided to change several items on the original agreement which was done very easy and only required a phone call to create the change order. When Brian came to my home and looked at the bathroom we both had an itemized list to discuss so I got exactly what I wanted. I told Brian that I wanted to stuff you can't see to be as good as the stuff you can see. I'm sure that is why Richard was assigned to my job. On April 25, 2016 Brian and Richard came to my home and we went over the contract again so we all agreed on all details of the agreement. The work started the next day and I was immediately impressed with care and respect that Richard had for my home and my comfort while this work was being done. Because this is a single bathroom home, Richard replaced the toilet every night before he left. I had a working toilet during the complete job. Each night when I returned from work I was given a detailed progress report and inspected the days work. Richard not only listened to my opinion but discussed each step with me so I felt like I was part of the remodel process. My bathroom was taken down to bare walls and cement floor and then totally rebuilt. Instead of repairing damaged walls Richard replaced them, building all new better walls. I watched Richard do plumbing, electric, and carpentry. His work is always to the best of his ability and his first priority is to please the home owner. My bathroom is exactly what I wanted and I'm very glad that Richard did my bathroom.

Job start was about 2 months later than original date provided when the job estimate and contract was made. However, once started the crew was very punctual and worked on our job every day (except weekends) until completed. The job was completed in the planned 3 weeks as scheduled. The work crew, lead by George Rager along with Todd, Dave, and Jim did excellent work from teardown to completion. The designer Mike Mergler and Brian Harrison also provided excellent service and coordination of the work. We are very happy with our new shower, bathroom and closets.
Description of Work: Remodeled master bathroom and added 2 closets (including 16 feet of new walls). Replaced an old one piece plastic shower with tiled walls and basin floor, and a high quality Kohler sliding glass door system. Replaced the vinyl floor with tile. Replaced the vanity, tank topper, and toilet with better quality units. Installed new mirror and lighting throughout. Removed old wall paper borders, prepared the drywall and painted 5 rooms and ceilings (shower, vanity/dressing room and 3 closets).

Just to clarify, from my original statement I didn't want to get too in detail about everything that took place during the remodeling of our bathrooms, but since they insist on blatantly lying about the details I feel obliged. I did not like Richard [last name] just because he spent more time talking then working which turned a 4 week project into 9 weeks, I did not like him because the first day he was there he came into my upstairs while I was getting out of the shower, which my upstairs is closed off and he never knocked and I felt uncomfortable and found it absurd that Richard felt that was to do. I called to tell Brian the next day to tell him how uncomfortable it made me and he brushed it off lying to me telling that he has known Richard for a very long time when come to find out he's only worked for the company for 6 months prior. So this company knows exactly why I did not like Richard. Next, they said they bought a freezer and $500 worth of meat. Honestly, I'd like to know where exactly this new freezer and meat is because it was never even discussed. I guess, since I have yet to hear from them after this review was posted that I will never be seeing that. I told them that Richard spent a whole day blowing breakers in my house because he said himself he didn't know what he was doing so I could only assume it was him that also blew the breaker causing the meat to spoil before we knew it. I was the only one home and I certainly never blew the breaker. In fact, breakers in our house frequently blow since this project ended which they never did before but I'm sure that's just a coincidence as well. They also said they wrote off a "large" amount of money we owed them. I'm not sure I consider Brian saying he didn't want my money after everything that had happened and writing off the last $500 we owed the for a project that was undertaken without our knowledge as exactly large. As for listing all the good reviews for Richard, I'm sure he will get lots of good reviews as he probably pressured your customers into enrolling in Angie's list by taking $15 off the total amount of the job, like he did us. Like he also tallied up a bill in his own handwriting which I still have and this company knows about, of all the things he did for free, also without my consent, and threatened to charge me for them if I told his employers on him. Of course, when said employers were at my house they assured me that neither of these things were company practice and Brian said in his own words that Richard would not be working for them any longer. Of course I believed them but they were also lying about that. Brian came back to my house himself to correct Richard's mistakes. He was polite and worked fast. Bathrooms looked great. I have not contacted this company since our last dealings, because I would be too afraid of who they would send to fix it. I'm sure there will be a rebuttal statement for this, as it seems this is how this site works. It does no good to give an opinion of a experience with a company if all they do is lie to try and dismiss your claim. As of today, 3/15/2016, I have not received a call from this company. 3/25/2016 still no phone call on any of our lines.
Description of Work: They remodeled both bathrooms in my house. It took the one worker they sent to my house 9 weeks to complete both bathrooms. The workers name was Richard [last name] and his behavior while at my house was unacceptable. Besides the extended period of time he took to complete the job, he tried to cover himself by supposedly providing "free" work, or installing items for "free" that he threatened to charge me for if at the end of the job I complained to his bosses. I did have a meeting with his bosses after the job was completed and told them everything. They were very receptive and promptly corrected all Richard's mistakes. However, after a few months of use, baseboards are cracking, paint on the walls are running despite having new fans installed and the shelves in the lower level shower that is never used somehow are cracked. Especially for the amount of time spent on this project, I expected better. I also hope they really did get rid of Mr. [last name] and have not continued to let him in their customers homes, he is not right.

Response from Dayton Home Remodeling
This two bathroom remodeling project was about 9 months ago and is still in warranty. However, we were not contacted for any repairs. A baseboard pulling or a corner shelf cracking is not uncommon in a home this old because of settling on an old foundation. We would have been happy to send Brian out to repair the problem if we had been notified. We are still willing to do so, if the customer wishes. We had enormous problems reaching her on the phone, so she can call our office to schedule a time at her convenience. As for "paint running," we assume she means moisture is collecting and running down the walls after showering, but the customer removed the fan replacement from our original contract, receiving a credit back for leaving the fan as is. So, the problem persists from before the remodeling because they chose not to replace the fan after all. We are not at fault for this problem. I have a Change Order signed by the customer which states that we deducted $1100 for the Freezer and meat that they claimed were damaged by Richard shutting off the electric. This change order was modified by Brian and me (Mike) while meeting with the customer and her husband in their kitchen. In an attempt to make them happy we covered this loss even though we did not think it was due to our actions. Customer’s claim that we never discussed this and she was not reimbursed is belied by the fact that we have a signed change order showing that exactly. This is the problem with Angie’s List allowing reviews long after the project has occurred and not vetting them properly. It’s easy for a customer to forget what actually happened, or to act in anger and call the Contractor a liar without regard to the facts. Because of this complaint we did some investigating and found out that the electric being turned off was actually done by the electric company on the day in question because they were running a new line to the customer’s house at a higher level than the old one, and when they got no answer at the door, they cut the electric off without notice while they worked. Poor Richard, who is an accomplished electrical installer, had gone to the store to purchase the correct switches needed for the bathroom (the customer had supplied 3 way switches, not the correct ones), and was frantic trying to figure out what had happened to the electric while he was gone. The customer subsequently blamed him when the power outage actually wasn’t his fault. No good deed goes unpunished. In addition to this, after completing all the work, as the customer stated Brian did, we wrote off the remaining balance of $500 when the customer demanded she be compensated for her inconvenience. Once again, we were trying to please the customer even though we completed everything we had promised. This totals $1600 in reductions making the entire project a financial loss for us. As for the customer’s claim that Richard did things for free in order to force the customer not to tattle on him to his bosses, the truth is Richard is too gentle and docile to ever be so Machiavellian. A good example of this is that after painting one entire bathroom, Richard returned the next day to find a new gallon of paint in a different color at the door, because the customer decided they didn’t like the color they chose, and they expected Richard to repaint the entire bath, for free, which he did because he was trying to please the customer. There was a whole litany of things like this that were done without charge, and we knew about it. We were trying to please the customer. As for the insinuation that Richard did something perverse by opening the doorway at the bottom of the stairs and starting up the steps to go to work on the upstairs bath, not knowing someone was in it, we are appalled at the assassination of this good man’s reputation. He never walked in on anyone, even advertently, and we think Angie’s List should be sued for libel for printing it. Please read the 13 glowing reviews of Richard’s work that follow this one, for further insight into DHR’s performance. Mike Mergler, Managing Partner - DHR

we were fortunate to get richard peyton (who was a "one man band" ) to do the extensive job. the work included the installation of new roof vent and complete tear out/re-install of our shower, vanity and fixtures. The work was done during sometimes cold weather. regardless, richard showed great perseverance and dedication. plus he proved to be a first rate painter. Because of his attention to detail we refer to him as a craftsman instead of a worker. bottom line: we are highly pleased with richard's work.

We chose Dayton Home Remodeling because of their fair price and willingness to work with us to complete some of the work ourselves. Their workmanship is unbelievable and we were more than pleased with the outcome. The custom shower was beyond my expectation and the main bathroom was absolutely beautiful!! They always arrived on time each day, were courteous, and at the end of the day provided an update on where they were in the project and what was going to happen next. They were careful in cleaning up each day and took steps to protect furnishings while working. George Rager was always available to answer questions or address concerns. I felt confident in his work and leadership on the project. If we have another project in the future, Dayton Home Remodeling would be the contractor we call.

The bathroom is for my husband who is handicapped. DHR was very sensitive to his needs, and made sure that he was able to use the bathroom at the end of every day. They helped us make decisions on how to lay everything out, and took a lot of time making sure that everything was done correctly and looks great. We live in a very old house, which always comes with surprises during remodeling. DHR was able to help work around these issues. This is the first work we've had done on our home that we are really happy with. We have an old house and will be doing more remodeling in the future. They will definitely be on our list.
Description of Work: Gutted bathroom down to studs. Moved toilet/plumbing to another part of the bathroom. Put in handi-cap accessible shower/toilet/sink. Tiled walls and floor. Put in new door and electric. Painted.

This firm did such a fine job, instead of providing detail on the "usual stuff", we'll just say that we agree with all of the positive comments. I was a bit skeptical of DHR using a subcontractor for the cabinet and backsplash installation, but didn't need to be. Greg and Melanie were absolute consummate, highly skilled/experienced pros. Our work involved the removal of soffits on either side of the kitchen under which the old cabinets hung. When they started tearing into the soffits, it was discovered that there was lumber framing, electrical wiring, and even a plumbing vent stack! There really was no way the estimator would have known all that was up there - he did ask me and I told him I watched the house being built and didn't remember anything being up in those soffits (oops). Greg removed those soffits with surgical skill with a CHISEL, relocated wiring/rewired everything, and relocated the plumbing stack, all to code requirements. That added two days and $1000 to the original estimate, but I thought that was fair - it was a lot of extra work and quite a mess, what with insulation falling, etc. They installed the cabinets, trimwork and tiled backsplash meticulously and skillfully. When they were working, they....well....they WORKED!! They were pleasant, but they weren't overly familiar or sat around gabbing. They WORKED. And carefully protected the carpets/flooring every day, and cleaned up after themselves every day. They ate lunch in their truck and only took 15 minutes+/-! Melanie was a great sounding board and provided great advice regarding backsplash and countertop colors, and on cabinet handles. Everything looks absolutely gorgeous and we've received many compliments. DHR's payment policy (so much down, certain progress percentages due throughout the project, etc.) was very professional and fair, and they were never overly concerned about us paying before further work was done. Other than for the extra/unforeseen work that needed to be done, DHR stuck to its original estimate. The only thing I kind of (and only "kind of") regret is that we didn't take more time considering the quality of the cabinetry provided by DHR, and that was our fault. We were on a strict budget and went for the standard line of cabinetry, Mastercraft I think it was. They look beautiful and are of at least the quality of what we had removed. But upon close examination you can detect where better construction could've been used. When the cabinetry was delivered, there were a few doors/drawer-fronts with stain flaws. DHR immediately contacted Mastercraft and had them deliver replacements ASAP, which arrived in a few days and did not delay the job. Again, we generally knew the quality-level we were purchasing, but I kind of wish I would've spent a few thousand more dollars for a little better quality. DHR did a great job for us and we will be calling them when it's time to have the bathrooms overhauled!
Description of Work: Removed old kitchen cabinets, removed soffits, provided/installed new kitchen cabinets, installed backsplash, installed old cabinets in laundry room.

DHR helped to make our dreams come true on the first floor of our house! We have lived in it for 17 years and it was in dire need to be pulled out of the mish-mash of 1960's, 70's and 80's styling. We hadn't thought of redoing the kitchen this year until we contacted a hardwood flooring installer who recommended we update the kitchen concurrent with the new floor. Mike came out and spent several hours on two occasions understanding what we were trying to do. He made recommendations for the layout, cabinet styles and associated lighting, appliances, etc. During the project, Brian came out to check progress and give us any updates. Also, DHR did a wonderful job coordinating schedules with the hardwood floor installation. Greg and Melanie did most of the work and were a joy to work with! They did excellent work and were flexible on the details as well as our schedule to bring the work to a successful conclusion. First, the kitchen was taken down to studs, plumbing and electric added on and/or re-routed. New drywall installed and one wall was brought out a few inches to accommodate plumbing and electric that formerly resided in the soffits. Also, they enlarged a pass-through opening between the kitchen and family room. In addition to the ceiling lights, they added can lights and puck lighting under the cabinets. Finally, cabinets and quartz countertop were installed, new range and microwave installed (we bought), old dishwasher installed, etc. to finish the kitchen. Pretty much turn-key except for appliances in the kitchen. Concurrently with the kitchen we updated a large laundry room that had a small toilet area. This room had always bothered us in that we couldn't figure out if it was a large bathroom with a washer and dryer or a laundry room with a toilet and sink. As it was, it was not a nice room to put foofoo soaps, frilly little towels and other nice-smelling things. DHR installed a wall with door (and casing) dividing the room into a separate powder room and laundry room. The powder room side got hardwood floors and the laundry room has vinyl. Scope of work was not completely turn-key, but involved quite a bit: small toilet area and washer/dryer walls removed and patched over, dividing wall installed, all plumbing and electric added onto for lighting and outlets. We supplied the vinyl flooring, laundry tub, bathroom vanity, and light fixtures which they installed. We finished the project by painting both rooms, moulding and towel racks, etc. Finally, our under-powered basement was corrected by the addition of a 20 amp circuit run in the basement for the shop as well as straightening out some of the other outlets and lighting. We are delighted with the results of the remodel which not only increased the value of our house, but also our enjoyment of living in the new environment!
Description of Work: Complete kitchen remodel/update, convert large 1st floor laundry room into separate laundry room + powder room, electrical wiring in the basement.

Richard did a wonderful job on both bathrooms- looks great -could not have asked for a better job! Tarps were put down daily and everything cleaned up at end of day. Did one bathroom at a time so I was not inconvenienced at all. Great effort given to all areas and good job of explaining what he was doing and why it was done. Brian checked on the job on a routine basis to make sure everything was progressing. Richard spent the time to make sure things were done the right way. Richard takes a great deal of pride in his work and it shows- everything was done with great detail and precision. All ceramic tile, backsplashes, vanities, fixtures etc. look great. Everything looks wonderful - better than I thought it would. I would definitely recommend Dayton Home Remodeling and especially Richard for the effort he put into the project.

I interviewed 11 contractors for this project and was ready to give up when I came across Dayton Home Remodeling thru Angie's List. In short, I am very pleased, as is my elderly mother for whom this project was done. Mike managed negotiating the terms of the project and spent considerable time explaining details so that I could understand why one or the other item is better/worse. The price was very good and they did not add costs as the project went along. Brian managed the fieldwork and checked in on a routine basis to make sure the project was progressing as needed. Being an engineer, all parties were very patient with my continual questions. George and David did the entire project themselves with only assistance with drywall finishing, which was a supreme outcome as well. I thought it would take 4-6 weeks given the complexities and they were done in 3. All of my siblings are engineers and were very worried about me being taken advantage of given I am a single parent. Not only was the quality of work very high, but the materials used had the same or more level of integrity than my siblings were saying was required. Making a deck for the stacking washer and dryer was done with 2x10s, not 2x4s or even 2x6s. George was available immediately to respond to questions, texts etc and I know if I have a question 6 months from now he will be happy to respond. I WILL call them again when I can do another project and WILL recommend them to others, as we all know, good help is very hard to find. Way to go George!! regards, Happy homeowner
