ZETTLER ACE HARDWARE

Good, with one signifacant bump. The safety glass in the window was not damaged just the aluminum frame. I thought it was a lost cause for a year, until I was at Zettler for some other project and noticed their window repair area. I brought in my window, was assured that it could be duplicated with every effort made to try to reuse parts that were intact including the safety glass. Within 3 days they remade the entire window (unable to salvage any parts). One problem though instead of replacing the safety glass with another piece of safety glass, they replaced it with real glass. When questioned about that practice the worker produced an unsatisfactory and misguided answer, "That's the way we've always done it". My gut said something is not right here, because, he didn't look old enough to have been around for "always". I took my window home for safe keeping and spent the next few days doing a little research. I found out that it is actually against federal and state consumer safety laws to use real glass in such replacements. Armed with a little knowledge that I didn't have to use, I called and spoke with the manager who quickly agreed that the window should not have been repaired with glass and that they would redo the window with plexiglass (they reportedly do not have access to "safety glass"). The frame was a beautiful job, it fit the door as though it was the original. The plexiglass is safe and will serve it's purpose although I would have preferred another sheet of safety glass because it does not scratch nearly as easily. I can now die happy. I would suggest that they provide their young workers with a bit more supervision and education on their legal responsibilities and complying with consumer safety laws. How they do their job is important and could mean the difference between life and death for a young child, family pet or vulnerable adult who might fall into a glass window they replaced improperly. Next time I will know what questions to ask before the job is done. I like to keep the little guy in business whenever possible.

Work was completed in a few days. Results looked good. The frame was old 50's/60's aluminum and they were able to save it.

They were great. It would have taken me forever to find all that stuff in a huge mega-hardware store, but this little store actually has people who know exactly what you need and can find it for you. I have a 1950's era house, and am always in need of odd parts. This place always seems to have what I need.
