 + -1 moreAll in all it was a very pleasant experience from start to finish. From initially scheduling for an estimate to the estimate itself, through actually getting the work done-A+. When David came out to do the estimate he also pointed that our chimney mortar had deteriorated, too, and needed tuckpointing as well. He gave us an estimate for that, too. We weren't ready to do the work at the time, but will be calling them to come and do the work soon! I felt very comfortable that the people at this company were very knowledgeable and would do a great job, and they did. Keep up the excellent work and customer service DM Thompson! Thank you.
Description of Work: I called this company and spoke to Mike Thompson who set up an appointment to come out and take a look at our project. We live in an older home (1910ish) and have three brick columns in front of the front porch. The mortar in lower sections of the columns had deteriorated. David Thompson came out for the appointment and took a look at the job. I also mentioned to him that sections of the block foundation on an addition to the back of our house had some cracks in the mortar. He took a look at that as well and gave us an estimate. We called a few more companies to come give us estimates and decided to go with DM Thompson. I called and made an appointment for the work to be done. Two very nice men came to do the work. One worked on the brick in front and one worked on the block foundation in back. I think the whole job took about 1 1/2 hours and the work was very nice. The mortar on the brick columns was a reddish color and they made sure to match it.

As they were taking down the old wall, one man was cleaning up right behind them. I have already set up another job for them to work on my chimney.

 + -1 moreI CALLED THOMPSON TO GET AN ESTIMATE, WAS TOLD THAT CHIMNEY LINERS WERE STANDARD WORK, AND WAS QUOTED AN ESTIMATE OVER THE PHONE. AFTER RECEIVING TWO OTHER ESTIMATES (THEY CAME TO THE HOUSE TO LOOK AT THE WORK), WE DECIDED TO GO WITH ANOTHER COMPANY, BUT THEY DID NOT RETURN OUR CALLS TO SET UP A START DATE. WE CALLED THOMPSON AND SET UP AN APPOINTMENT FOR THE NEXT DAY. THEY ARRIVED AT THE SCHEDULED TIME AND COMPLETED THE WORK IN THE ESTIMATED TIME FRAME. WE WERE ABLE TO USE A COUPON FROM THE ANGIE'S LIST MAGAZINE THAT HAD JUST ARRIVED, SAVING 10%.
Description of Work: A CHIMNEY LINER WAS INSTALLED TO VENT THE FURNACE THROUGH THE CHIMNEY.

 + 0 moreWe were very pleased with the chimney sweep service. The representative was very professional, courteous, and helpful. He said that they would send an estimate for the chimney cap, which arrived in approximately one week, and a brochure for fireplace doors. We called the office several times and were told that they were very busy and behind and would get it out to us ASAP. We explained that we wanted the chimney cap (approx. $900) for sure and wanted to have the fireplace doors installed at the same time. Finally, after about 6 weeks and several calls, we received the brochures which were not what we had discussed with the representative. I think this is a good company -- they just seem too busy to give estimates, etc. They lost a job that probably would have been at least $1,500 just because they didn't have time to send a brochure and give an estimate.
Description of Work: We called for chimney sweep service; to get an estimate for a new chimney cap and to get an estimate for new fireplace doors.

 + -1 moreThe person arrived at my house promptly. He looked at my chimney and said that he really didn't know if I needed a stainless steel liner, but he thought some of the bricks were damaged. He said it would be over $5000 to rebuild the chimney or over $2000 for a new liner. He thought I should have the chimney inspected before making a decision (approx. $200). I got an estimate over the phone from another company that was quite a bit less, but I need to have them come out to see the chimney.
Description of Work: Requested quote for liner installed in chimney, so that I can have an insert.

 + -1 moreI called to get an estimate. I got a call back within a day and a meeting was scheduled. The representative arrive on time and gave me an estimate. I called back to schedule the work. The work was performed as scheduled within two weeks of my call. I did call after the work was done because one chimney still had a small leak. They sent someone out within a week who reapplied the water proofing but advised it might be that I need a new chimney cap.
Description of Work: Cut out and tuck-point the deteriorated mortar joints on two chimneys using grey mortar. Waterproof both chimneys using chimney saver ten year waterproof.

 + -1 moreThis company is one of the very few honest firms that we have dealt with over the last 10 years. Since becoming a member, Angie's list is invaluable. I would love to be there to present D. M. Thompson Angie's Award!!! Both the company and us lost "misplaced" the quote. We told them what we thought the quote was. Price was agreed to less $100!!! Plus they allowed us the Senior Discount. They are professionals. We can now burn a blazing hot fire on a zero night with the wind blowing 30 miles per hour with no worries about a fire hazard.
Description of Work: Installed Stainless steel liner in chimney. The clay liner was in very poor condition with NO caulking between them. They have accomplished a very difficult job!!! Our chimney was a fire hazard and we did not realize it. Poor shoddy construction when the home was built in 1987. Wonder the previous owner or us did NOT burn the house down on a cold winter night. They did the masonry work on the top half of our chimney on a previous job. The top half was literally crumbling apart with again very poor construction of the cement blocks. Not overlapped as is standard construction of any cement block work.

Mike came back after the work was completed to explain the repair and address my questions. This chimney had been repaired previously (improperly) by a large local company. I highly recommend that you use D.M. Thompson.

 + -1 moreExcellent workmanship. Appeared to be honest. Had a little trouble with the Angie's List coupon which says 10% off or maximum of $300.00. They allowed 10% off the entire job price or $143.00. They were good to there word. I suggest saying 10% off quoted work up to a certain maximum for the discount. They at first said the job maximum was $300 (very low in today's market) or ONLY $30.00 discount allowed.
Description of Work: Removed cement block above roof line. Inspected and cleaned the clay liner. Found cracks in the masonry. Put new masonry top to the chimney. Removed all debris from area. We are bringing them back to repair cracks in the fire liner before it becomes a major stainless steel insert repair and prevention of a fire hazard.

 + -1 moreExcellent work. Crew arrived promptly and all were very polite and professional. They worked all week in 90 degree heat, and never appeared to slack off. Mike supervised the work very closely, and reviewed it with me throughout to make sure I was satisfied. The initial grinding created large amounts of dust, which they cleaned up, including from off neighbor's cars, trees, etc. Any areas not initially done to my satisfaction, of which there were very few, were promtly re-done. While not included in my quote, at my request, Mike also attempted to clean some sandstone areas on the front of my house that were badly stained, at no additional charge. Most of my neighbors have stopped by to comment on the excellent results, and so far two have asked for a reference for their own homes. I would have no hesitation in hiring them again or recommending them to anyone else.
Description of Work: Tuckpointing on three storey house, incl. chimney. Ground out all old joints, replaced damaged bricks, pointed all joints, power washed and waterproofed all repaied walls. This is the second time I have hired this company, and great results both times.

 + -1 moreThey did a great job. I was expecting them to do a chimney sweep, but they identified a fire that had taken place in the chimney and didn't do the sweep or charge me for it. Granted, the liner will cost me a lot more, but they took pictures and showed me and were trustworthy. This is a good company. We did have some small scheduling issues that were worked through and unfortunate, but in the end I was happy.
Description of Work: They patched a hole in my chimney in the attic and sealed two chimneys on the outside.

 + -1 moreOverall experience - very negative. The company was contacted about chimney repair work and was told my mailing address is Galena and given directions. They agreed to come to the house and provide an estimate. I took time off work and waited and received a call from the estimator at the time they were to be there who was lost in New Albany. I told him he was 5 miles from my house. He then refused to come to the house since "they do not go to Galena." I contacted the main office and the person answering the phone said she did not even know where Galena was, but since the estimator said he could not go there - that was it. This is very poor customer service by what I believe shows a company that does not know its customer priorities. I specifically told the company when I requested an estimate where I was located street and city and they said no problem.

 + -1 moreWas impressed with the professionalism and service from the moment I called to request an estimate. The estimate included detailed information about the sealant product they use, and this was a very important topic for me. I am a customer who is interested in 'the details', and I was satisfied with the level of information provided to me. DM Thompson did not provide the lowest estimate, but I felt that their estimate provided the best value. (They were suggesting steps to be taken that the lower estimates did not include, for example.) When I mailed the request to schedule the work, they called me the next day to schedule the work -- for the following day! Speedy! I am not planning to get on my roof to review the work up close and personal, but from my ground-level examination I can say that I am satisfied with the end result of their work.

In addition to doing the work we hired them for, the employees also alerted us to another repair, we would not otherwise have known about (for a matter this company does not handle). These people really know what they are doing.
