Because I had previously used them to upgrade my slate roof, I called Durable, which was quick to respond to my call after hailstorm: walked the roof and told me it was a total loss; estimated $40K. Insurance company denied and directed Durable to provide estimate of rebuild of one side of roof and repair other side with slates salvaged from the destroyed side. New bid came in at about $30K. After receiving about a third of this amount from the insurance company (about 2 years later) Durable offered me $3K for the slate, which they would tear off if I had another company put on an asphalt shingle roof. Eventually the company that repaired the roof (for about $4 or $5K) pointed out that the obvious reason Durable wanted to buy the slate is that most of it was good! I felt Durable colluded with my (former) insurance company; that there costs are high; and that I can get very good slate roofing done for less.
Description of Work: Post-hail damage estimate; long collusion with insurance company.

Response from The Durable Slate Co
The member has hired us on a number of occasions to repair his slate roof at (address removed)., dating back to 1995. On 12-8-09 the member called for an estimate with the call notes as follows: “wants a price on securing any loose slates currently on roof- he is tearing the roof off soon and going with shingle, so he doesn't want to replace any broken or missing. Also, there is a leak that he thinks is the flashing on the east chimney-please check it out. Also, estimate for tuck pointing on both chimneys.” Our estimator went out to the house on 12-15-09 but turned it in as a "mark out", meaning no estimate provided. The estimators note explaining his reasoning for the "mark out" was: “storm damage causing leak-customer does not want it repaired/ tearing off.” This posting on January 2, 2012 is the first time we were made aware of the member's issues. Even though our records indicated a mark out, we searched our files, but were unable to locate any estimates for the $40,000.00 or $30,000.00 estimates he says we provided. Additionally, we called the member on January 18, 2012 in order to clear up any misunderstandings and to obtain additional information. Upon identifying ourselves, the member hung up the phone. Based on the information currently at hand we had no dealings with his insurance company nor would we have gained anything but a loss of reputation by "colluding" with an insurer.

We were pleased. They were pretty responsive. The workers showed up on time. They did great quality work. We only had a few minor issues with the downspouts and they sent someone out quickly to fix it.

They are very good in every which way. They are a little pricey but they do very good work and they are prompt. We've had a number of jobs done by them over the years. We had our slate roof repaired and replaced. We go back with them for at least ten years. For certain jobs they are a bit pricey so for certain smaller jobs I've gone to other people who are a little more modest in price. For basic roofing and gutter work I've gone with The Durable Slate Co and I've been very happy.

We were having a leaking roof problem and Durable slate was very prompt in sending someone to our house for an estimate. They were promt and the estimate was resonable for the work that needed to be done. We did have to wait several weeks before they could perform the restoration but it was worth the wait. The roof is absolutely beautiful.
Description of Work: We have a 1941 Tudor with a slate roof. Durable slate replaced the copper channels on the back of the roof and along the roof top. This is the first time it has been replaced since the house was built and the work is beautiful, actually stunning. Karchy Fulop was the roofer and he is a true artist of the craft. He was polite, explained all his work in detail, was punctual and neat. I have used this company before for slate repair and am always very happy with the results.

Durable was great. They arrived on time, several member crew. They explained how they were going to remove the old mortar in the damaged areas, and how they were then going to replace it. They explained the type of mortar they were going to use. As this is an older home, replacing the mortar is something that will need to be done often. So they took the time to also foward all the spec's they used on the project so that we as the home owners could do any maintainence ourselves. We would absolutely use them again.
Description of Work: recently had masonry work done. we have an historic property and wanted to be sure the work was done correctly. Durable restoration did a great job. Very detailed and explained a lot about the project. They gave a complete estimate of all the masonry work required around the house ,and broke it out so we would only purchase what we wanted. Although they are not inexpensive by any means, the cost is worth it. They re-did a portion of our roof earlier in the year and we love it. Others were telling us we needed to do a complete tear off -- durable slate reused all the tiles, and resealed the joints. We have been very pleased with each job Durable has done for us.

Both time water was seeping into our home and other contractors had been unable to solve the problem. They immediately recognized that replacement gutters had not been custom made to extend up under the first row or two of slate tiles thereby allowing frozen ice and snow to back up under the slate, melt and seep into our home. With this second time they even called and said that a gentleman in follow up had recognized that they had not put on a decorative, custom made end cap. So, yesterday (2-15-11), they came out for 5 hours and replaced an end 4' section of gutter with a new, custom end cap. Very impressive.
Description of Work: On two occassions they have replaced sections of 65 year old custon gutter.

the second repair didn't fix the problems I was having. Had a leak by the dormer off my stairway, still have it. the first repair seemed fine until it rained and I had a major leak down my guest room wall. I called them as soon as I saw it and they said they would send someone out. no concern about the giant crack in the plaster wall or the water stains covering the wall. I used them because they were reputable but they are over priced for the work they do. I'm sure they do great work putting on new slate roofs but repairing a roof on a nearly 100yr old house isn't all that much of a good experience.

Response from The Durable Slate Co
Our records indicate that when the estimator went out to estimate the work he discovered the roof was asphalt shingles. We only work on slate and tile roofs and so the estimate was "marked out" which means no estimate provided. Obviously we did not communicate clearly to the customer why we did not provide an estimate and that is a mistake on our part.

The company's estimator arrived promptly, did a thorough inspection of my roof, took some photos, went over the estimate and recommendations with me, and promptly scheduled the work. He is very knowledgeable, friendly, and helpful. The two employees who were to do the work arrived right on schedule, confirmed the work to be done, and estimated the time it would take to complete the project. The work was interrupted by a series of downpours - they secured the chimney with a tarp, said they would return the next weekday to complete the work, and did so. The work was completely cleaned up, the roofers were polite, friendly, and apparently experienced. I was completely satisfied with the work, as I have been with Durable Slate's work in the past.

Chad Tobin was responsive and professional. We considered the masonry and porch roof repair estimates too high. Slate work on roof was fine and done about one month after original estimate.
Description of Work: 1. Replaced 15-20 slates on roof. 2. Estimated masonry spot pointing and brick repair $3,750. 3. Estimated rebuild brick arch on porch $2,750. 4. Estimated spot point chimney repair $2,500. 5. Estimated copper porch roof replacement $3,250. Only hired for slate repairs; other estimates too high.
