I chose a remodeling company to do my kitchen and this is the cabinet company that they work with (now Sims Lohman). I went to the showroom to look at cabinet samples and chose a finish and style that I liked. When my cabinets arrived at my house, they did not look like the finish that I chose in the showroom (name was the same, but finish color didn't look like the sample). I decided to keep them after working out a deal for some "free" accessories. The pantry that arrived was too deep (24" instead of 15" as I had ordered). After many attempts to reach the representative at Sims-Lohman, I was informed that the panty did not come in 15" depth and that mine would have to be cut down because they were only available in 24" or 12" depth (no one had informed me of this prior). I told them I didn't want a panty that had been cut down and to order the 12" pantry. At the same time I also ordered the hardware for my cabinets and was told it would take 2-3 DAYS to come in. After EIGHT WEEKS of not hearing from anyone, I contacted my remodeling company who informed me the hardware was on back-order and the pantry should arrive in a few days. They brought the pantry out (still no hardware) with the wrong size shelves, which have to be ordered, so I wait another two weeks. After they installed the shelves (and finally the hardware), I realize the pantry is NOT A NEW ONE, but the original one that had been cut down!!!!! I am now awaiting another re-order of a 12" pantry, which will take another 8 weeks.
Description of Work: This company is now Sims Lohman and I became aware of them through my kitchen remodel company. I ordered cabinets and hardware from them.

At first, the experience went very well... Company worked with us to stay within our budget. A few surprise expenses showed up well after final billing. A few items were charged twice to us. This was not appreciated. Cabinets/wood work throughout the house showed scrapes, chunks missing, gaps in actual cabinets, noticeable nail holes in every area (kitchen, 6 bathrooms, 2 office areas, basement bar, laundry room). Several times they sent technicians out to fix these affected areas. This was greatly appreciated... However, when we asked the technicians if they were going to fix everything, we were told no. Specifically the noticeable nail holes and gaps. Technicians informed us they were told not to fix the nail holes, which has been our biggest area of concern. We have black cabinets... On multiple occasions, the company used brown and dark red crayon markers to repairs... This made the scrapes/holes even more noticeable to the eye. Long story short, they came out numerous times over a four month period to remedy several small items. We were told nail, holes are part of the install process and our expectations were invalid. Dozens of noticeable damaged items were 'delivery and install grade' and they were not going to fix them. We asked if they had nail holes showing in their showroom... They would not provide an answer. An email was sent they were done with their touch ups and would not proceed further. This company was recently purchased by Sims-Lohman Fine Kitchens and Granite

They helped us. They took time. I am a kind of person that need to be shown the color or how it's going to look like and they did that. That was really important to me. A lot of people won't take time to do that. They let me come over a lot and took time and helped me.

This was probably the worst experience we've ever had with a contractor. Selecting the counter was fine and the sales staff at the showroom was OK. We really wanted the counters to be installed no later than June 30. We asked if this was possible and the staff assured us it would be no problem. However, June 28th rolled around and I called to ask and they said it would be the following week at the earliest. I figured that's OK if it means they're taking their time, but the actual installation was botched beyond belief. The first problem was with the cooktop. They didn't pre-cut the opening for the cooktop and so they had to do it on site. They didn't measure the opening in the top of the base cabinet correctly and the hole in the counter didn't match up. Thus, the cooktop would not fit in. I was trying to stay out of their way when they were installing, but when they were done they literally ran out of the from door. I called them back and they tried to blame the cabinets for it. That is absurd, seeing as they were right there and just didn't measure correctly. Because it was already installed, they worked on the counter inside and the amount of dust left behind was horrible. I literally had to wash every piece of kitchenware we have. The second problem was with the backsplashes. They didn't measure correctly (again!), and the backsplash was put over top of the electrical outlets instead of cut so it didn't interfere with the first place. I contacted them and they said they would rip off the backsplashes and cut them down. I said I wasn't very comfortable with that solution as I think taking them off will damage the wall. They insisted it would be fine, so I agreed to it and asked them to come out and fix it. They have ignored me and nobody has yet fixed the problem. Now we have a third problem. The seam where the two pieces of countertop meet (L-shaped kitchen) are peeling. It looks really bad like the 30 year old counters that were in the house before. This was one of the biggest investments we've made in our house, and it's been very frustrating almost the whole way through. I've tried to be reasonable and patient but since the company gets paid up front, they don't seem too concerned about fixing the problems we've had. Just terrible. UPDATE 9/21/12: So the sub contractor installer called the company that made the countertop to come look at the seam. When they came, the man immediately declared that it was moisture damage. I said that's interesting, because we have a TV sitting within an inch of the broken seam and we're very careful to keep the area dry because water and electronics don't mix. They didn't believe me and denied warranty coverage because they said, get this: countertops in a kitchen can't get wet! They also falsely claimed that they shipped the counter with a warning label about keeping water away from the seam. I have a picture of the counter immediately after installation that shows no such label was on our counter as installed. I'm shocked at some of the claims made by the sub contractor in their letter. We purchased our cooktop on April 27, 2012 and brought it home that day. I have a receipt to prove it. When they came to measure for the counter, my wife showed them the cooktop and said they can feel free to measure the cutout, but they didn't want to. When the guys actually came to install the counter, I again guided them to the cooktop sitting on the floor next to the kitchen and again they ignored it. I didn't notice how much dust was made until after they left. I just figured that if the company had a lot of experience as they claimed, they would know that it's inconsiderate not to clean up after a job, but they were in such a hurry to leave that they skipped it. I'm sorry that I hurt someones feelings when I was asking for things to be fixed. As I said before, this was a huge investment for us and we were being ignored so I became frustrated. Sometimes that's how things go, but it's not a valid reason to ignore someone. I did agree to have them cut the backsplash down, and it did damage the walls a bit unfortunately. Compared to the other issues though, I'm going to let that one go. The letter also said "we have legitimate concerns that nothing we do will be good enough for him". I can assure you that if the broken seam is fixed, you will never hear another peep from me. Take a look at my other reviews, you'll see I understand that people aren't perfect and try to be fair. What makes me really mad is not when somebody screws up, but when they screw up and refuse to take responsibility for it, as was the case here with the seam. I'm as frustrated as ever.

Response from SCIOTO KITCHENS
Letter from sub-contractor to David Shaver, President of Scioto Kitchen Sales, Corp: Dear Dave, This letter is in response to the member job. The first problem the member addresses is the cooktop. The cooktop was cut to the correct size and we never changed it. We didn’t pre-cut the cooktop because when we did the template on the job, the stove was not onsite. It is our standard procedure if the cooktop is not onsite, we cut it at installation. We received a call after our guys had left the jobsite from the member advising the cooktop didn’t fit. We sent them back out to address the issue. There was a brace in the cabinet not letting it drop in. The cut ¼” into the cabinet brace and the cooktop dropped right in, no changes were made to the cooktop cut-out. The member was onsite for this procedure. He didn’t mention anything about the dust or any other issues he had to our installers. If he had, the would have immediately fixed these while they were on the job with him. The second issue is the backsplashes. We assume responsibility for this issue. We made these the standard laminate backsplash height of 4” as directed on the drawing, so we are uncertain why they interfered with the electrical outlets. Our installers should have caught this at installation. Again, the member was present for installation and there was no mention to our installers on this matter. We were made aware of it with an e-mail and photos from you. We said we would go out, remove the existing backsplashes and replace the backsplashes at no charge. The member was rude to Chris on the phone when we initially tried to reschedule this repair and said he didn’t want us back in his house, but instead he wanted to hire an electrician to move up the outlets, patch walls, and us to pay for it, which we didn’t feel was a reasonable solution to the problem. We received an e-mail from Charlie on Tuesday, July 24 with demands from the member that concerned us and a request for Chris Smith, VP Operations, to come fix, which we were willing to do and we still are. Unfortunately, he wanted Christ to repair the top that weekend on 7/28 or 7/29, and he didn’t get there because he was already scheduled to work on 7/28 and he doesn’t work on Sundays due to responsibilities with his church. The member filed this complaint on 7/29. Chris is willing to come remove and replace the backsplashes on his counter top any evening or Saturday so the member doesn’t have to miss any work, but we need to put it on the schedule like we do with all of our jobs. Furthermore, we want the member to sign off the work is acceptable before Chris leaves. If Charlie or a representative from Scioto wants to be present, I think this is a great idea also considering the circumstances of this job. This is the first we have heard of the third issue with the seam. He chose post form counter tops, so the seam will be visible. Out installers said the seam was flawless at bath their trips to this jobsite. We have been in business since 1991 and installed thousands of countertops, the only time we have seen a seam peel as described in the letter if it’s subject to moisture. Unfortunately, we can’t see the black and white pictures you provided clear enough to make out what is happening. However, we stand behind out work and we purchased these blanks from Harston Kennedy, a reputable supplier who provides a limited two year warranty. The member never told us or Scioto Kitchen about this issue until now. We will have to have color photos, look at the top and file a warranty complaint with our supplier. We don’t understand why he files a complaint with an outside source, but never contact us, especially when we have tried to accommodate all of his request to date. Dave, we have worked with you for over 15 years and you are one of our most valued clients. You know we will do whatever it takes to keep you and your customers happy. We apologize for this unfortunate matter, but we will do whatever it takes to rectify it. However, after the last conversation Chris had with the member and his last e-mail to Charlie, we have legitimate concerns that nothing we do will be good enough for him. Please do not hesitate to contact me with any further questions or documentation you need from me. Let me know what you want us to do. As always, we appreciate your business. Sincerely Fred Skeeles President

The cabinet order was accurate, they arrived in good condition. After our contractor installed them he alerted us to a few chips and rough spots in the paint on the doors and Jason came out and ordered new doors for several cabinets under the warranty. The new doors were great. Jason was very responsive and knowledgeable. The replacement doors were later than originally promised as Jason was a bit distracted by his wife having a baby.
Description of Work: Jason Schlosser came to our home, measured for new cabinets, drew up a plan which he e-mailed to us, gave us an estimate, and helped us figure out which kind to order. We visited the showroom several times to see sample kitchens and check the cabinet quality- we chose mid-grade Homecrest painted ivory white maple. We carefully reviewed the cabinet order and paid a downpayment of half of the price. Cabinets were delivered to our home. We had a contractor install them.

We purchased a new kitchen from Scioto Kitchens, the sales person seemed a little slow on responses but they were ordered on time and delivered on time. Of course they were paid in full at time of delivery. During the install it turned out that the company sent the wrong size paneling for the bar and missed one cabinet front. Two weeks after the delivery I hadn't received one call regarding replacement of the incorrect items. I had to call the office. The salesperson didn't know when the new boards were coming in. the salesperson called back to inform met that they were shipping parts of the order that day, the other piece would ship out later. I asked if they would overnight the small piece, their response was that they "never overnighted" The final straw was the order was going to be in on a Thursday they wouldn't be out to install the items until the next Wed. 3 weeks after the installation! I would think that if it was the company's mistake they would have taken extra steps to fix their mistakes by installing the paneling as soon as it arrived. My feeling is that they had their money and don't care about the customer!!!

When they installed the countertop they cut holes for the oven and the sink. We were expecting to keep the cut outs but the installer took it with him. It was material we paid for but the company refused to return it to us. We were also disappointed with the quality of the cabinets. Overall a bad experience and we would not use them again.
