ONE RED SLATE

Good job. Have used this company for over ten years

I have used One Red Slate for years. Due to the age of our German Village (130 years) slate repairs are necessary several times a year. With the help of One Red Slate our roof remains water tight at a reasonable cost for the work completed. Our home has a large slate roof the is three stories high. Dangerous work!!

Great! One Red Slate does great work, but what was even more important than that to me was the honesty that owner Steve May displayed. I contacted Steve in a big rush to get repairs done as we were in contract on the sale of the home and the inspection revealed a few issues. We were on a very tight timeline and Steve was able to get everything done on time. On the day the work was to be finished, Steve called me and said that after looking at the issues a second time (he personally went out after his subcontractor said he thought maybe some of the things I was quoted on weren't necessary) they didn't need to do all of the work originally contemplated and my bill was now $600 less than the estimate. Steve could have EASILY charged me the extra $600 - I was so busy moving that I wouldn't have known and there is no way I was getting up on the roof of a 3-story home to check his work! But he was honest and I appreciate that so much. It is hard to find folks with that level of integrity. Thank you!

I have recently had some problems with water leaking on the exterior of the home where this company had done work. I contacted Mr. May via telephone and told him about the problem ....without results. I emailed him and even sent pictures of the problem. I have yet to get a response. One of the leaks is causing brick deterioration on my home. I will have to hire someone else to resolve the problems (which is in 3 areas). I am hesitant to write negative comments about someones company, but I am so disappointed and do not understand the lack of communication or desire to make things right. I thought this was a conscientious company I could count on .... and always feel assured the work would be great.

I had to call them them twice to fix an issue with our gutters but in they end they did fix the problem. The second attempt/ fix was very appreciated.

This was a great company. They identified the most logical cause and tried it before moving to any expensive fixes. They fixed the roof promptly and even cleaned out some gutters.

They did a wonderful job! Took us awhile to make a decision for which contractor to use, so put them behind time-wise, but they came in and did the job quickly when they got there, and cleaned up, etc

Very good. I have used this company for years for repairs on the slate roof also and they know what do to and have reasonable charges.

Did a good job for a good price. Owner knew his stuff and was one of the original founders of Durable Slate. His worker missed a couple things, but he came back and made it right.

They've always been prompt, courteous,and reasonably priced. A good company.

They were very good at the work they did! they did exactly what they said they would. They live up to what they promise.

They were great. They showed up on time and replaced all the broken slates on the roof. I did not have any active leaks, so they just had to replaces some broken slates. I will definitely call them again if I want some slates replaces. Their price was good as well.

All good. I have used this company for a number of years. The work was done promptly, and they actually repaired more slates than they had quoted for, so I got some extra value. The new slates look great.

My experience was something of a mixed bag. Mr. May was extremely responsive, professional, and was very willing to work with me (making an extra trip out to take photos of the roof) to help ensure that I received the appropriate permitting from Columbus' historic preservation society. He also reduced his quote to match a competitor's bid. HOWEVER, I experienced TERRIBLE leaking after the original roof had been torn off and new tar paper had been put on. There was substantial damage to the ceilings in several rooms of my house (both upstairs and down). During the evening that the damage occurred Mr. May and the job coordinator were both very responsive and came to my house almost immediately to see if they could fix the problem. Their efforts did help, but there was still some leakage in one of the rooms until the new roof was put on. There do not appear to be any leaks or problems with the roof at the moment. After the roof was on, the job coordinator himself did the ceiling and wall repairs necessitated by the leaks. On this he did a reasonable job, but did not seem to make any efforts to go above and beyond to make sure that I was satisfied with the repair work. In addition to the roof, they replaced and repaired the boxed-gutters around certain portions of the house. This appears to be quality work. Overall, I would probably not go with this company again and would probably not recommend them to friends.

It went well. The gutter cleaning was okay. The soffit was where I had the problem. They kept raising the price on me as the job went on. If it was going to be that expensive, I would have went elsewhere or done it myself. The price of $3300 was for the soffit, he hired two younger guys to replace the soffit.

They showed up on time and did a great job.

We called the company and received a very low estimate right away. We called and told them that we would like to hire them and within a week, someone was there. He came while I was at work but was still there by the time I returned. He replaced the slates and had to add a few more than the estimate had stated. He was not going to charge us for them because it was not included in the estimate! I insisted and paid for the extra slates anyway.

Mr. Mays and his crew responded quickly to replace the damaged roof. They gave us an honest estimate and proceeded to replace the roof. They did an excellent job. I don't think I could have found a better more honest and trustworthy team. The roof was repaired taking approximately 7 days. These men worked even working on the weekend. They were the best and I would use them anytime. I just wished I could find this type of team for other work other than the roof.

I didn't meet them. They did the work while I was at work. I came home and everything was done. They didn't clean up very well when they were done with the work, they left some slates on the ground. I would use them again.

Stephen May has been prompt in returning phone calls, coming to give estimates, and performing the work. Twice I have had quibbles with the work his crew has done, but both times he has responded quickly to my concerns. I have been more than satisfied with the prices he has charged, and will continue to use One Red Slate for regular maintenance. I will also mention that I have had his larger and better-known competitor come to estimate repair costs, and their estimates have been far higher (more than 10 times the cost in one case). I think Stephen uses sound judgement in determining the necessary scope of work, and does not try to inflate the estimate to what he thinks an insurance company will pay.

He was very, very fair. He called me when he couldn't be on time. I was very pleased with him. I am going to use he for my future chimney repair and work. He didn't charge me for a cleaning because it didn't need cleaning. He was here for a couple of hours. He gave me some very good advice.

Roof damage from the wind storm included a hole in the roof going through to the master bedroom. The owner came late in the day after the storm and covered the hole. The following day they repaired the roof.
