Oakland Nursery

Oakland was very professional and did very good work. Only firm that gave us a plan before we paid any money. Worked with us while we got approval from our historical commission, and were flexible when we hit some snags. Would hire again.

They had a big big selection! (I can't get over the cost of trees now days, though.) Purchased some cool "twisty" tall shrubs (sculpted topiarys), a small Japanese maple and about three bushes, and a few ornamental grasses thrown in. (Plus, a few pumpkins for the kids). My kids loved looking around the place and the giant pumpkins too! (Got pictures of them!) Nice place to visit and buy some hearty plants. You don't need to have a contractor license to do it either. The employees that helped us were friendly and helpful (AND PATIENT with me!).

We had John Reiner (owner) come out and design a landscape plan for us. He had worked with us on a project at our previous home, so we requested him specifically. John is very personable and extremely knowledgeable. He did a much more detailed plan this time. He came out a second time with an assistant to measure and work with our existing landscape. The plan took several months to receive back, but we are very pleased with it. The plan incorporated everything that we asked for and utilizes many of the plants that we already have, saving a lot on the installation costs. The plan also utilizes a lot of low maintenance plants. I can't wait to get started planting! I highly recommend this service, because landscaping mistakes can be very costly.

The plan was complete and included many of the plants that I suggested. He was careful to include plants that wouldn't be eaten by deer.

Oakland was having a nice sale going on for Fall plantings. The employees are very knowledgeable. I was looking for a few different types of ornamental grasses and needed advice on how tall some would grow and if they would tolerate shade well. The staff knew their stuff. They also had mums in tons of colors. Even though I find Oakland a bit more expensive than other nurseries, their quality is unbeatable, plants are hardier and I like supporting an independent local business.

Very happy with the service and attention we received at Oakwood. Some time after planting when a couple of our barberries (only 2 of 8) weren't doing too well they said to bring them in for a replacement - but managed to suggest a couple of things that ultimately saved the bushes and prevented us from having to do dig them up for a swap. They were willing to spend the time talking to us to answer any questions we had. We are very pleased with Oakland's selection and expertise and customer service.

Nice of them to offer this professional service, and I trust them as they're very experienced. I appreciated their advice, so I bought another shrub for my garden!

Although a small job, Oakland's landscape architect came out to our Clintonville home, tweaked our original ideas, improving the final look and he made an extra effort to find the stone we preferred from another source when Lang Stone was temporarily out of stock. Excellent crew, showed up when scheduled, worked steadily from arrival until finished, very polite and meticulously cleaned up the area before leaving. The cost was comparable to a quote from a Newark company we contacted spring 2005, but did not use because of substantail delay in returning phone calls, which pushed the project too late into the planting season. We felt our project, though important to us, was too small to be seriously considered by them. The positive experience with Oakland was just the opposite.

This was truly the PERFECT landscaping experience. We are already making plans for next summer for Brian and his team to work on another area of the yard we were so happy with the work. All our neighbors agree it looks fantastic and they could not have been more professional, hardworking, and eager to please the customer. The best landscaping experience we have ever had! We needed to have a slight change in the plan so that our back faucet didn't drain into a flower bed and they were able to come up with an excellent solution. Paul, the crew leader, is a real craftsman. He did not take any shortcuts installing the pavers or the walls which required many individual pieces to be cut. Other landscape people who have seen the work have commented that it was really done right and will last a long time.

They were very prompt and did a very nice job. We were very pleased with the results.

I left messages and they didn't return them for a couple of weeks. I finally got a hold of them and they gave me excuses as to why they didn't return my phone calls but eventually sent someone out. I went through what I wanted done with the serviceman and signed a contract. Throughout the month of June they told me that all the parts weren't in and said they'd be out July 4th. I stayed home and they never called or showed. On July 8th they came out and installed some wiring in the front yard and left addition wiring in my front yard, then they said they'd come back on July 19. Some of the lights were brown and some were black and I was sick of dealing with the company so I cancelled the job. They put me off for 11 weeks so they obviously didn't want to do the work. Based on my own personal experience I wouldn't recommend Oakland Nursery to anyone for landscaping.

I was disappointed in mulch application. Lower leaves and plant edges were buried and died in the heat. Two new plants were totally buried, even though I had them marked with large plastic labels that came with pots. Mulch depth was good. Phone reception could use some work.

Sara is always a joy to work with. I can't recommend her enough. She is prompt, professional and very patient. She takes your wishes into account every step of the way. She is very flexible. Her designs are always excellent, and she welcomes comments and feedback. We've been using Oakland for several years and have never felt a need to use another landscaping company.

We couldn't be more pleased with Amy's design and with the crew that was headed by George. Their work was outstanding. They started and finished on schedule. George kept us up to date on a daily basis as to their progress and answered any questions we had. He gave us the opportunity to make decisions on any issues. The quality of the plants appears to be great. The work was started about 3 weeks ago, and everything seems to have settled in and is doing well. Our only job was to water every other day for the first 2 weeks. The new grass was up in about a week and has already been mowed. We've received numerous favorable comments from neighbors and walkers. We attended the Home and Garden Show and chose Oakland as one of 3 candidates to do the work. Once we checked Angie's, we realized that the low ratings of the other two were such that we were not willing to give them the opportunity. We would recommend (and are) Oakland Nursery and Amy to everyone!

They came on time and gave me an estimate of the work I needed done. They were very professional. However the problem is they are the only landscaping company that charged for the estimate which they will not deduct if I choose to use them.

We got a really good deal. They were very cooperative, both the sales and the planters. Made the process as easy as possible.

They are a good company. I gave a B in professionalism only because the workmen continued to be noisy even after I asked them to be a little less so because I was trying to work. They were yelling from the street to the back yard.

We met with Mike Warner. He met us at our home and was prompt. He drew us a simple landscape design so that we could do the work ourselves. We were happy with the plan he created for us.
