McCoy Paving left us a mess by doing our drive. Their proposal stated "Re-grade area for proper paving surface and compact, adding stone as needed". Instead, they didn't grade the existing stone drive or add only needed stone, they dumped 3" of their stone on top of our stone drive, then poured 3" of asphalt on that. The result was an 84 sq. yd. parking spot with 49 ft. of edge that sits 6" higher than our surrounding yard. Unsafe to walk up and down over it, impossible to get lawn tractor or snowblower up over, and doomed to fail during yard flooding from heavy rains, a concern I voiced twice prior to their work. The estimator David McCoy came back after the install to hear my complaints and said I did the right thing by installing wire mesh, concrete, fill dirt, top soil, and grass seed to seal in and taper off the mess McCoy left. As to reimbursing me for that necessary work, I was told NO. Since my wife had already mailed their payment (without my knowledge) I was told that I was a nitpicker and should just go write an online review. Like this one, perhaps.

Description of Work: Tore out and replaced driveway. They were on time and did a great job. Started at 8AM and completed at 2PM. I am very happy at this point however will reserve some judgment until spring of 2015. I want to see how it handles the winter as I cannot sealcoat it until then. I also thought it was about $200 too high however one must remember you get what you pay for and so far so good.

We have a unique driveway, from the street it goes to the back of our property 120' does a hairpin turn and then another 60' to the garage which is a basement level, rear loading. It also goes downhill in the back. I'd called 4-5 contractors to get several proposals. I also called Sheedy Paving and the lady explained that they were commercial pavers. She highly recommended McCoy Paving, saying I wouldn't go wrong with him and that's who they referred all their residential work to. She sounded very sincere. I then called Brian (mid April) and arranged a time for him to come out and give us a price. He showed up when he said he would and he spent time with my wife and I to see what we wanted done. We had done some landscaping in the back so there would be some changes such as adding a turn around in the back to make it easier to get up the hill in the winter when the driveway is icy. The turn area and up to the garage is where the crumbling was the worst. We wanted to make sure that with a new driveway this didn't happen. Most of the other contractors we had out would make the new asphalt 1 layer, 2" thick when compacted. Brian explained that he lays asphalt in 2 layers, 1&1/2" thick ea. 3" total. A course layer then a finish layer making a stronger driveway. One other company proposed this method also but in the end was $1500 more expensive. This other Co. was also a much larger one doing mostly commercial work. We went with Brian in part do to the smaller size of his business and that he, the owner would be on the job. My wife and I were impressed with the way Brian came across to us, sincere and knowledgeable. This was very important to us as we had a very bad experience with a driveway contractor last year and didn't want to go thru that again. He explained to us that he has been in business for himself 4 years and had 27 yrs. experience paving for another company. Within a week we had his proposal. The price came in about middle of the road. Considering that most of the others would use less asphalt we felt that the price was reasonable. McCoy Paving was not listed on Angie's List. The BBB gave him an A+ and he's a member. We also went and saw 2 of his references, the driveways looked great and the people spoke highly of Brian. By late June we had decided that we wanted Brian to do the work. I let him know that I wanted to wait till the week before Labor Day to do the job. Brian came out a couple weeks ago to go over the job again with me, to make sure of what we wanted done. He then said he would get started Sept 1st or 2nd and would call me ahead of that to give an exact day. He called 8-31 and said his crew would be out to get started the following morning, 7:45 to 8AM. Brian stated he would not be there but Jason, his foreman, would be able to answer any questions. They showed up the following morning as promised @ 7:55. Jason went over everything that was to be done with me. I was impressed that Brian had communicated to Jason all the correct info. Nothing had been forgotten. The crew started right away tearing out the old driveway and spent the day getting it prepped for paving. All of his crew are hard workers and work together great. The following morning Brian showed up ahead of his crew and surveyed the work that had been done. Brian finished grading the driveway by adding more gravel and compacting it. He really wanted to get the foundation just right. We have an invisible pet fence wire that runs across the driveway in front. I bought a 1/2" pipe and one of Brian's guy buried it in the foundation and rewired it for me. Then the paving process started; 2 layers as promised. I'm very impressed that there is no seam showing where it's double width in the back. Brian also installed asphalt curbs in the back as there is an embankment at the back of the driveway. This will help to ensure that if we start sliding down the driveway when it's icy we don't go over the edge. There's about a 5' drop into a ravine about 3' behind the driveway. He water tested to ensure that water drains properly. He told us to wait 5-7 days before driving on the driveway while the asphalt hardens. Our new driveway looks fantastic. Thank you Brian and crew.
