J and J appears to have an answering service. Even though I was assured that someone would come out to my home to give me an estimate on July 24, 2011, no one showed up. I called the company again and had to leave a message. A man called me back on a Private Number. He left a message but did not leave his telephone number. I called the answering service again and no one ever returned my call. I am no longer interested in even receiving an estimate from a company with such poor service and unprofessional conduct.

On 24 July I called the phone number the member gave to my answering service. I needed to confirm the time for an estimate and to make sure someone would even be there.I at that time was 30 miles away.I did not want to travel 30 miles one way and no one there. I called many times ,I think because of my private number the member would not answer her own phone?? Yes, the member did call me,and yes I did returne the call ,If only the member would have picked up her phone. In this type of situation we both lose.

Yes member did call for an estimate. We would have provided an estimate had member answered the phone calls, however we only communicated with an answering machine. We also would like to respond to the overall grading. We feel that this is an unfair judgement due to the fact we never visited the home and no work performed. We regret this incident. Appointment's require two way communication between customer and contractor. Sincerely, James Grove/President J & J Waterproofing LLC

I sought out Basement Waterproofers who had good Angie's list ratings. I found 3 immediately - Rogers, Phillips, and Jand J . They each came by to see the damage - I had 2 vertical cracks in a poured foundation that were leaking water when it was raining hard. One was behind a finished wall, and the water had gotten so bad, unobserved, that it had ruined a section of carpet and the drywall near the floor. I had already fixed the gutter situation and the grading situation that contributed to the issue, however water was still coming in. Jim took a day to get back to my message, came out at a mutually convenient time, explained what was happening, offered to give me the name of a good epoxy repair company that would be cheaper but that he wouldn't recommend as a solution since the water would probably find another way in and could damage other areas behind my finished basement. He recommended the fix described above and the drainage from the sump. There were other cracks in my walls that weren't leaking, Jim did not recommend fixing them at the time, which would have been more money to him, but I was honest about saying they didn't need to be fixed unless/until they started leaking (in the unfinished portion of the basement). Once I decided to go with Jim - he was back out 2 days later at a day very convenient to me. His team was professional, clean, got right to work, let me know that the drill would make a lot of noise for about 10 minutes and then be done (I had a 2 year old at home at the time) and quickly took care of the basement. The outside took a little bit longer, and it was a hot day. The team was very diligent, cleaned up nicely, helped me by putting some of the extra dirt into a low spot I had in the lawn. they spread tarps in the house, cleaned up any dirt or mess they made and generally left everything as it was before they came, except for the fixes. I was very happy with the services - the price was the lowest of the three which all basically recommended the same type of solution. I would definitely recommend Jim and his team. Jim even observed that the other two I had contacted were some of the better names in the business and that I couldn't go wrong with any of them. Jim didn't know my other quotes before giving me his.
Description of Work: Fix 3 leaking cracks in poured basement walls by floating the wall at the floor (basically drilling out a small section of the basement floor, to allow the water to drain right into the existing drainage) installing a plastic vinyl (rigid, not like a wrap) over the crack area, and reconcreting the work area back to floor level. I also had 2 downspouts that the previous owner had ruined the drain lines out to the street and had installed some very week above ground runs to put the water away from the house. They trenched the ground, put the pipes in and ran them away from the house, to the side of a hill next to my house that drained to a creek. They also connected the sump into this new drainage.

Did you ever have work done on your home where everything went together perfectly? These guys showed up on time and went right to work. They knew what they were doing and worked together like a fine Swiss watch. There were no surprises because Jim had scoped out the job beforehand, knew just where to find the matching siding and kept everything moving along with the help of his partner John. They finished ahead of schedule and even took time to replace some missing siding in another area. And helped me remove a ground squirrel that had set up residence in the crawl space and ended up racing around the living room. They were very pleasant, trustworthy people to work with. Highly recommended.

One of the best home maintenance experiences I have ever had. Jim is knowledgeable and trustworthy. I had several estimates for the structual work I needed done to my basement. Jim explained every aspect of what needed to be done and why. It was a bonus that his price was lower than my other estimates. I will definitely hire him again if I need any basement work done in my new house.

The crew came when scheduled. There were six of them. They protected our carpets. They brought the beams in through a basement window which avoided carrying them through the house. They worked very efficiently and were finished in three hours. They cleaned up very well after themselves and Jim had some good suggestions for us about the best way and materials to finish the wall.
Description of Work: We had a basement wall that was bowing slightly and had developed a crack. Since we are likely selling our house it was recommended that we reinforce the wall. They installed six steel columns to brace the wall.

Jim was highly recommended by a friend. He came in person for an estimate and took the time to explain the process in detail and answer all of our questions. He explained why some of what we thought we needed wasn't necessary - I think this is always a sign of an honest contractor - basically leaving money on the table. He was patient with our follow up questions as well. Jim was careful not to over-promise perfect waterproofing in the case of our very wet basement and he accurately predicted the places where small amounts of water would come in after heavy rains. The work was completed on time and the price significantly lower than the competitor who gave us an estimate. The basement of this 1920s house was essentially a creek before; now we only get a very very small amount of water after the heaviest rains. We no longer wear boots to do the laundry, and we can store things in the basement. Highly recommend Jand J.

Jim was very knowledgable about old homes and the type of drainage in my basement (home built in 1930)and felt "I" beams were all that was needed since I never got water in the basement despite the damp walls. (same diagnosis I received from a home inspection). Another contractor recommended putting in a new drainage system as well as the beams. They showed up promptly, thoroughly explained what they would be doing and cleaned up afterwards. I liked that the owner was on the job site.
Description of Work: The walls were bowing in and there were some cracks in the walls which had gotten bigger over time. The walls also were wet after heavy rains. Installed steel "I" beams on two walls and repaired the cracks.

The person who came out do give us an estimate was knowledgeable in this area. He explained everything to us in detail and in layman terms. He explained what was happening, what needed to be done, and the number of beams needed and why. We talked about corner beams and he told us the pro and cons of doing that. They did a fantastic job and there was no mess left for us to clean up. I would recommend this company.

Jand J came out to look at our basement and providing a quote on the spot for everything we wanted. After dealing with some other companies we chose them. We were not currently living in the house that they were doing work on so we gave them the garage code to our house. They came and did all the work in one day, I couldn't even tell someone had been in our house that day, except for the work in the basement. They cleaned up great and left nothing behind. The work was done flawlessly for a good price and I couldn't be happier. The only thing I did not like is they use an answering service, which means they can be hard to get a hold of right away.

Home inspector stated SE drain on house not draining properly and foundation may be bowing. Jim came over to give a second opinion about this and found the drain was going up hill to get to the street. Also noted that the foundation was not bowing but had natural cracks for a 30yr old house. He recommend the current homeowner have the guy who did the drain come and fix it. She says the guy refuses to come out and ended up paying us money to get it fixed ourselves. So when we moved in we called Jim. He fit us in his busy schedule and dug a hole for the drain into some trees that line our fence-so it would go downhill and not uphill. He did such a good job, you can't even tell where he dug. He then checked our sump pump and answered all of our questions-it's our first sump pump. And he gave us advice on dehumidifiers. He was so generous with information and experience, and we really appreciated it. He was done in just a few hours, he is so professional!!
Description of Work: Reguided drain from eavespout and sump pump to drain, downhill, to back of house; dug hole for said drain; capped front eavespout to just drain to street (without back drain and sump pump attached); checked function of sump pump; checked basement for bowing.

Jim's company was referred to me by a friend when I told her I needed someone to look at my basement problem. I called Jim and he responded quickly to my initial phone call; then came over the next day to give me an estimate. He explained what was going on with the walls, why the cracks were forming and how the problem could be taken care of. He explained how his crew would do the work and gave me a couple of references to check him out and said he was on Angie's List. He did not pressure me to get the work done. After checking out the company on Angie's List and calling other references, I decided to go ahead with the work. I called Jim to schedule a time. Jim and his crew arrived on time and completed the work in a professional manner. I would not hesitate to refer Jand J Waterproofing to someone in need of basement work.

I'm actually submitting a second report, a year and half later, to state that our basement is STILL wonderfully, beautifully, amazingly DRY! We had two years of miserable flooding. We had every "fix" done in the book before Jim came along and fixed the problem for good. He was SO honest, so kind, so professional and he does GREAT work! I can honestly say that I am grateful to Jim every time it rains. He made our lives SO much better and happier and EASIER! THANK YOU!

Very positive experience. An honest answer was given that their services were not needed yet, as long as the situation did not change. A crack in the cinder block wall triggered the phone call to have them come out and examine it. It was determined it was cosmetic only at this time and that we could repair it ourselves. They educated us on what to look for and to keep an eye on it in the future.

We spotted some mold in our basement and decided to have some basement companies from Angie's List come out and give us a recommendation as to what we should do about it. Two companies said we needed to gut out the entire basement and start over. We weren't convinced, though, so we called another company, Jand J Waterproofing. When Jim Groves of Jand J Waterproofing came out, he spent over an hour with us, explaining how moisture gets into the basement, how mold develops, and what to do about it. He did NOT recommend gutting out the basement. He said our basement was in excellent condition. He said the key to dealing with mold is to keep on top of it. As soon as you see it growing, kill it with bleach, just like you would do in your bathroom. He certainly diffused a lot of our fears and saved us from spending thousands of unnecessary dollars. I would recommend Jand J Basements to anyone.

Scheduled a visit with Jand J, they picked the time and we waited for them to show up and they never did. We spent the afternoon and early evening at home just waiting... No call, nothing until 24+ hours later when they called saying '...ah sorry about that I just forgot...' (or something along those lines) and asked if when they could come out. I told them if they can't make it on time and/or at least call for the first visit then that's all I needed to know about their company! Hey, we're all busy but come on; you're trying to sell us on your company you don't even show up?!? This wasn't a problem for four of your competitors...

What a fantastic experience! Not only was Jim refreshingly honest (even giving my husband a few do-it-yourself hints), but he incredibly knowledgeable. Our basement had severe moisture and flooding issues from the moment we moved in two years ago. We had previously waterproofed the walls, put in glass-block windows AND re-graded parts of the front yard (all at the cost and advice of other 'water-proofers') to no avail. At last we found Jand J and Jim found the REAL problem. We have been dry as a bone ever since. We even put up drywall, replaced the carpet, and did a complete FINISHED remodel on our basement we were so confident with the results! Very fair pricing, also.
Description of Work: Added sump-pump to our basement; replaced all water tiles in basement; added drainage hole for dehumidifier.
