We made an offer on a house while out of the state and we relied on Ray to give us a thorough run down of everything that could be an issue. We got what we paid for. He was very through and included pictures of all the potential problems so we could see what he was talking about. I am at ease knowing that every thing was checked, from big obvious issues like fallen insulation to the tiniest issues like a dead mouse and a window crank that was not functioning properly. The report was given to us via email very quickly.

Ray Starkey was professional in all aspects of the home inspection except for the "let's-sit-down-and-talk" presentation after his inspection. For some unexplainable reason, he had a total lack of common sense in presenting his findings to us. We are having new appliances installed in the kitchen and when he did his inspection the kitchen was in disarray and the dishwasher was sitting in the middle of the kitchen yet to be installed. He pointed out the dishwasher needed to be installed - REALLY, big guy?!?! Duh. We just had the outside of the house and the garage walls painted. On the outside, they had moved back all of the mulch away from the house to paint the stucco below the mulch level. Big Ray pointed out to me we needed to do something about that mulch. Another DUH pronouncement. They had painted the garage walls and, in preparation, removed everything off of the walls - including the outlet and light switch covers. We had yet to clean out the "painting mess/pile" in the middle of the garage and put everything back in place, including putting things back on the wall. This was obvious by glancing into the garage and we were fully aware of what we needed to do in there. Ray could readily see that, but yet he made a point of looking me in the eye and seriously telling me we needed to replace those covers. Another REALLY!!!??? Our cat had one poopy accident in the basement, and Ray thought he needed to point out to us we needed to clean it up. About half of his points were this obvious, and even after I told him we did not need to be told about those types of obvious things, he continued to include them in his presentation. Really peeved me off. To his credit Ray did find several major deficiencies which we were not aware of which need to be addressed before we put the house on the market. So we are glad we had the home inspection done. But Ray needs to start listening to his clients and respect what they are telling him or asking of him.
Description of Work: We are preparing our house to be put up for sale in the near future. We had a home inspection done to be pro-active and head-off any nasty, expensive surprises when our home is inspected by potential buyers. We've lived in the house 34+ years, so we know all about the usual "minor" flaws which need to be addressed. We wanted to be informed of any "major" problems which were not readily obvious to us. We told this to Ray before he started his inspection.

I did not know that Angie allowed people to name call on her list, but I guess the ground work has now been laid. I suppose that Member was name calling and was upset not because of me or the job I did, but because he was embarrassed at the conditions of his home during my inspection time. I take Member comments about my detail as a compliment. I will not, and do not omit anything from my inspection reports, period. No seller or buyer can tell me what to place in, or omit from my findings. I am merely there to state the conditions found at the time of my inspection. As for the cat that had the mistake in the basement. This is very stretching from the fact that the very nice old cat was locked in an unfinished basement because the cat is incontinent and had urinated and pooped throughout the basement at different times with no chemical cleanup made. This is a health concern, and even though Member knew of it, I still must report it. Many times when I do Pre Listing inspections, the seller will leave my report lay out for a future buyer to view with receipts of the work performed. If I were to omit things on request from that report my name would stand for nothing. People know my name and company name as detailed, and I will not sway from that detail. If you would like someone to sway with the wind and not tell it ALL to you as it is, then you don't want a Home Scan inspection. Thank you for your time. Ray Starkey

It went really well. He was very prompt, and completed the inspection in a good amount of time, but we didn't feel like he was cutting any corners.
Description of Work: We used HomeScan to do a home inspection and termite inspection prior to closing on a house. He was really great about telling us what was vital that we ask for to be remedied and what was less important that we could fix on our own.

My fiancé and I are buying a house. We called and just a few days later Ray came out to do our inspection. He was very thorough but did the work quickly. The house, we found, had a carpenter ant infestation in the garage. Ray took both still pictures and a video to show that the ants were both alive and dead. What was most impressive about Ray and his work was the way that he sat down with me at the end of the inspection and showed me pictures of the problematic areas of the house. He discussed with me which problems should be remedied immediately and which could be done over time. To top it off, in just a matter of hours, he had emailed me the pictures and the report. I highly recommend Home Scan to anyone who needs an inspection for their home. I will be sure to use them again if we move again!

I called Homescan and they scheduled the inspection 5 days out. They offered 3 other times, giving me the option. The inspection began with Jeff telling me what he was going to do and what I was going to receive at the end of the process. He also informed me that I could walk along with him on any and all parts of the inspection. After it was complete, he then covered each item, pointing out items that definitely need addressed and others that were cosmetic. That evening I received an email with over 20 photos attached.

Prior to buying our new house, Ray was engaged to perform a home inspection. He prepared a written report with his findings and provided useful responses to my questions during the inspection. However, his observation that there were no signs of water penetration in the crawl space were incorrect. While the crawl space was dry during his inspection, subsequent rain showed water coming in through one of the vents, which had water stains from previous rains on the wall. Other evidence of water penetration was also visible on the gravel and bottom blocks around the perimeter of the walls, which was subsequently corrected by having all of the drains from the dounspouts replaced. In addition, comments regarding mold/mildew in part of the basement included suggestions for removal but did not note that the wall contained over 30% moisture. This necessitated installing weeping tile and a sump pump to correct. The mold/mildew would have returned if the underlying problem was not corrected. While the contract clearly states that environmental problems are outside of the scope of the inspection, it would still be helpful if potential asbestos issues would be pointed out, such as asbestos tape used on ducts.

The appointment was for 1 p.m. and we rolled up to the house right on time. Jeff Ferguson was already there and had already climbed up on the roof to inspect it and was done, but was happy to go back up there along with my husband to show him the findings. He took us through the entire house, explaining what he was doing (and his evaluation of what he saw) with each room and each step. He answered questions thoroughly and offered information we didn't know or think to ask for (including maintenance suggestions, or preventative measures). He pointed out slight issues and offered advice on how to fix them, and identified the (few) larger issues for which we should probably ask remedial actions from the sellers. He was friendly, courteous and respectful-- even taking off his shoes while he worked the inside (carpeted) parts of the house. He gave us a full copy of the report to take home that afternoon, and followed up with an email including the photos he'd taken of potential problems and a scanned copy of the report in less than 24 hours. Overall my husband and I were both very pleased with this experience and I would hire HomeScan-- and Jeff, in particular-- if I need another inspection in the future.

Our realtor recommended "another" company for my daughters home inspection. As a long time Angie's List member, I checked to see how the company rated which was not so good! The value of customer input is priceless! I reviewed a number of reports and decide to recommend Home Scan to my daughter. They were able to perform the inspection within a week. From the first point of contact, the entire experience was nothing less than grade A!! Jeff arrived early and got right to work checking everything. While working, Jeff had a full audience following him asking questions. Not for a single moment did he appear to be annoyed. We didn't feel rushed! We felt as if Jeff was checking this house for his very own family! Jeff provided so many tips and recommendations on how to address some of the minor items noted in our report. It made the overall experience of buying a first home for my daughter and her husband who is serving his second round in Iraq VERY comforting! Thanks Jeff and Home Scan!! We so very much appreciate what you did for our family! I can rest knowing that my daughter, son-in-law and grandson will rest peacefully in their new well inspected home :-)
Description of Work: Jeff performed a thorough home and pest inspection on a house my daughter and son-in-law were looking to purchase. A "thorough" inspection = chimney, air/heating, plumping, electrical, insulation, appliances, structure, etc. Jeff also checked for termites, carpenter ants and other destructive pests!

Ray is a friendly, down-to-earth person, who spent four hours with us going through the home we were planning to purchase (and the home is only small to average in size). He was very meticulous and detail oriented, patiently answering in detail all our questions (and we constantly peppered him with questions as we followed him around) and giving us lots of information and maintenance advice on every aspect of the home. Before he left he told us to feel free to call him with any questions that might come up in the future. Six months later we called him with a question and he dropped by the house, looked over the situation and gave us great advice--he must have been there 45 minutes. When we asked what we owed for his visit, he just smiled and said to recommend HomeScan to our friends. WE ENTHUSIASTICALLY, UNRESERVEDLY RECOMMEND HIM TO EVERYONE!
Description of Work: Ray Starkey performed a pre-purchase home inspection for us. He scheduled us within 2 days of our call and was EXTREMELY thorough, knowledgeable, professional and personable. WE RECEIVED WAY MORE THAN OUR MONEY'S WORTH.

Ray showed up on time (early actually - before us!) and did a thorough visual inspection of the outside of the house and roof. He did not climb on the roof, but used binoculars to view any damage. He went inside the house and started with the attic and worked his way down. I was shocked that he was able to get through the outside, to the attic, second floor and first floor in an hour! He pointed out that usually he finds more and so it doesn't go that fast (good for us!). The finished basement and utilities in the basement were where we had expressed the most concern, so he spent a great deal of time down there. He showed us things along the way and provided maintenance tips that would help us out 10-15 years down the road. After he was done, he sat down with us and went through the whole report (which we were given a copy of). He provided a lot more tips for us and told us some things we had no idea of (like maintaining granite and the stamped concrete paver). He told us it was a really great house and we should be happy with how the inspection went. He only found one thing that needed fixed quickly and we were so grateful he pointed it out.

I was amazingly pleased with Ray's thoroughness (see above) and his kindness in explaining each step to me after he had finished his examination. I didn't have to be there the entire time he was in the house. I joined him about half an hour before he was scheduled to leave. Besides all his efficiency, knowledge and consideration he's fun to talk with.
Description of Work: Ray arrived on time and spent 3 hours in the house I was considering for purchase going through, over, under, and around everything (and I mean everything) in the house. He checked all the screens to see if they worked. All the appliances. All the faucets. Furnace, but not the air conditioner because it was too cold. He looked to see how much insulation there was. He checked to make sure all of the deck parts and pieces were attached properly and he made sure those attachments would last for a long time. He kept track of everything in triplicate (one goes to me, one he keeps, and one went to the title company) and marked everything that wasn't 'up to snuff' with red stickers. There wasn't anything small enough to miss his thoroughness.

They did an excellent job! The weather forecast for my appointment day called for snow, so I called the company to inquire about whether or not snow would cause problems with the inspection and was told that it would be okay. I was satisfied with that answer, but I got a follow-up call later that day telling me that they would squeeze a roof/chimney inspection into a packed schedule before the snow hit and then follow up with the rest of the inspection the next day (our scheduled day). This alone exceeded my expectations. I was present during the rest of the inspection and could tell that Ray and Jeff take their jobs seriously. They were very thorough, gave helpful suggestions about home maintenance, and answered all of my questions (and those of my 5 year old). They obviously know their stuff and I would highly recommend them to anyone.

This is the 4th time I'm purchasing a home and this was the best home inspection ever. I was very pleased when I arrived at the house to find Jeff in his socks so he wouldn't scratch the hardwood floors; how thoughtful. He explained everything that he was going to inspect beforehand, told me the order that he would perform the work, and also encouraged me to ask as many questions as possible. Jeff was starting the inspection outside and since it was raining, I told him I'd rather stay inside. He then gave me his tape measure so I could take room dimensions while he proceeded to start with the foundation and then headed up to the roof. I was particularly impressed at the attention Jeff paid to so many details. For instance, he ran all of the fixtures in all of the bathrooms at the same time to see how that would affect the water pressure! He explained so many things that it was a mini education on home maintenance and care, too.
Description of Work: Jeff spent 2 hours at the house and conducted a very thorough home inspection ($275) and termite/wood boring insect inspection ($65). He also set up the box for a radon inspection ($135; which lasts 48 hours).

Jeff Ferguson was our inspector. He arrived about five minutes late, but had called to let us know he was stuck in traffic. He had three adults and a 1 year old following him around, asking questions, and he answered them all with patience, knowledge, and good humor. He gave us a great deal of insight into our house and offered lots of tips on maintenance, etc. He even soothed our fears when he found things not to our liking - such as termites! What probably would have taken 2-3 hours stretched to four due solely to all of our questions. Jeff is very personable and knowledgeable and we would not hesitate to recommend him or HomeScan to anyone needing a home inspection.
