see where they were. That being given said, once they got here they worked quickly and efficiently and I am very pleased with the work.
"We had our Installers call off with the stomach flu for two days. We had to move there installation date one day. It interfered with their rummy game day or golf game, not sure which one. They complained about it all day. The install was very nice. we installed Quartz counter Tops, Looked Great. We received two other jobs from this job. I hope you enjoy your countertops. Customer signed off on the job when we were finished. I have called the customer to find out why she is so unhappy, NO RESPONSE. We keep notes about each install and this was in the folder."
11-7-14: Requested quote from Countertop Sales
11-10-14: In-home appt. scheduled by Phil Holbrook for 11-11-14
11-11-14: Met with Mr. Holbrook in our home. He measured kitchen countertops and backsplash and demoed products.
11-12-14: Met with Mr. Holbrook again to sign contract - paid 50% down payment.
11-14-14: Met with Lloyd (no last name) in our home. Lloyd re-measured countertops and backsplash. Made cardboard template.
12-04-14: We emailed Mr. Holbrook; requested status of order - no reply.
12-10-14: We emailed Mr. Holbrook requested installation date and balance - no reply
12-12-14: Received email from Mr. Holbrook stating countertops to be cut this day, will inform of install date by end of day. Total due $2250 (Orig invoice amount $4,500 - $2,250 deposit)
12-12-14: Emailed Mr. Holbrook - requested written invoice of balance due and date of installation.
12-13-14: Received email from Mr. Holbrook stating updated invoice would be sent.
12-14-14: Emailed Mr. Holbrook - requested total balance due and installation date 48 hrs prior to installation.
12-16-14: Unscheduled installers showed up at our door. I immediately contacted Phil Holbrook asking why we weren't told they were coming - he cited wife's surgery and hectic schedule as reasons for complete disregard for our schedule. Despite the fact that I was just about to leave for work, I allowed them to come in and do the install. They installed countertops minus the backsplash. After installation, they handed me an invoice with an adjusted total scribbled on the paper and asked me to pay. I asked the installer how they came to the number on the paper, he had no feedback other than to say Mr. Holbrook told him what to write down. I explained that I wanted to speak with Mr. Holbrook to get it corrected.
12-16-14: Emailed Mr. Holbrook requested updated invoice without the cost of the backsplash.
12-27: Called Mr. Holbrook, he used profanity and threatening words if we did not pay the amount he requested.
01-02-15: We sought legal advise for next steps.
01-12-15: We received a letter from attorney George C Georgeff on behalf of Mr. Holbrook stating we were in breech of contract, and if we do not submit payment in full in 7 days they will file an action in replevin requesting the court to allow Mr. Holbrook to remove his product.
It is my hope that we are able to return the product to Countertop Service and get our deposit back. This has been a very negative experience. Once they collected our deposit everything changed. I would not EVER consider doing business with this company or any of its affiliated EVER again.
To prevent from being further defrauded or any other unscrupulous actions, we retained legal representation. Consequently we have settled the matter.
Lesson learned, NEVER ignore a gut feel about a service provider.
Cabinets ordered Feb. 2013 delivered April totally did not match. Salesman fired over this deal (Phil told us this personally). Had to hunt down owner (Phil) to try and come up with a solution for approx 6 months. Even asked to have refund in STORE CREDIT for retail markup on bad cabinets and 3 cabinets we had never ordered an were never in plans. Final conversation on SEPT 13, where we had to call owner to ask what he was willing to do (he had had our proposal for over a month and was supposed to "get back with us"). He told us he didn't owe us a d*** thing - and hung up. Job unfinished. Granite on half of kitchen. Very sad. They (Dave specifically-who we really like!) were a personal referral from a friend in law enforcement. We now are going to small claims court.
"To Angie's List. Customer, (member name removed) ordered cabinets for a kitchen remodel. They ordered two different color of cabinets. The customer signed and paid for this cabinet order in full at the time of the contract. Aristokraft Maple cabinets The door style is Sinclair and the color of stain for the island is Sarsaparilla, the other wall and base cabinet color is Autumn. The customer placed this order full aware of the color, door style and how much money they had to pay for cabinets. There was no deception about what they were ordering. The cabinets arrived and were delivered to their house. The cabinets that where ordered matched their invoice. This customer ordered these cabinets and that is what they received. Countertop Sales is not responsible for the style or color selection of cabinets or countertops that any customer orders. This is the customers choice. We request that this customer sends Angie’s List a copy of their invoice for the cabinets. There were some extra wall cabinets that came in with this order that do not belong to to this customer. The kitchen Granite countertops installation was halted because of lack of payment. The costumers payment plan was set up for them to pay for their countertops in thirds . One third of the money paid at the time of the contract. The second third at the time of the template (this is the pattern we build the countertop from). We have not received their second payment, even though our installation department went ahead and installed part of their kitchen countertops so the would have a working kitchen. CounterTop Sales has gone way beyond what we should have done without being paid for our services. CounterTop Sales has invested a lot of money in to their kitchen for it not being paid for, and now this. Phil Holbrook CounterTop Sales"
The employee who measured for the new countertop was also very helpful with suggestions about corner angles.
The installers work seemed to go well by my husband but after they finished and left (with our final check) I noticed a "patch" along the edge where the seam in the quartz was placed. I called Phil the next day. He told me he would send someone out to look at it and fix it better.
I waited 1 week and never heard a word from Phil.
I called the company again and luckily an employee Josh answered the phone. He was also part of the 3 person team who installed the countertop. He was aware of the area I was concerned about and referred to a chip in the quartz. He arranged for someone to come out to fix it better in two days.
When the employee arrived to fix the chip he told me they knew there was a chip in the quartz when it arrived. This employee did a much better job of patching the chip but we have a patch in our new countertop!
I did call Phil after the patching to inquire about the countertop and why they would install one with a defect. His response was that the countertop was shifting and adjusting to our cabinets and they would be happy to fix any cracks or chips over the years. I was disappointed he did not offer some compensation for their mistake for receiving a chipped countertop. I could not refer this company to anyone.
In fact my neighbor, who referred me to this company and knows Phil, went to bat for me and talked with Phil about our countertops. Phil told him I was on his list to contact. So far no contact.
,
THE INSTALLERS WERE PROFESSIONAL DID A GREAT JOB WITH THE INSTALLATION.
I then met with Phil, the owner at his shop to get some budget numbers and review my choices of granite, quartz and "corian" equivalent. Phil then set up an appointment and met me at my home; took measurements and showed me good sized samples and thus what it would look like in my kitchen. He even verified the plumbing requirements for my sink to ensure a complete installation. He offered an 18 gauge stainless steel 70/30 under counter sink and would use my existing (new) faucet and disposal included in my price. Phil was okay with 3 payments (order, template and completion) by check (no credit cards) okay for this price I can do that.
I then went shopping. I looked on internet to verify his price and checked the dos and don'ts of granite including is he using 3mm granite not 2mm as some cheap houses do. Yes he uses 3 mm and gave me the edging I wanted at no added price including rounded corners too. I checked out the List and other websites; went to 2 more suppliers but they couldn't/wouldn't match his price and were only open 8 to 5 during the week, which made it hard to do business with. I then went to Lowe's who had a similar product but were literally twice the price.
Only complaint was the guy that Phil sent to do the template had a bad odor of cigarettes that stayed in my house for hours. Other than that everything else met my expectations.
The two man installation team showed up an hour early, which is great, they get done faster. The weather was horrible but they worked thru it and didn't complain at all. They were done in less than 4 hours -- helped me move the countertop appliances, removal of existing counters and backsplash, removal of sink, glue on cabinets from old counters, verified plumbing again. They installed the granite carefully but had to shim one end as my floors are not level...okay they did the right thing...and you can't see it unless you are on the floor. They sealed the granite and did a great job of cleaning up after themselves (short of washing the floor for me). They went over the care and dos and don'ts of granite (it can break/crack don't drop anything heavy, don't cut directly, hot pots are okay, reseal once a year or when water soaks in and doesn't bead up on top.
Phil I was really impressed with your install team. It is nice to feel like you got your money's worth.
We also replaced the builders grade, scratched up porcelain sink with a black and very durable quartz sink. They told us the best kind of faucet to buy with it at the Home Depot. They installed it all the same day as the counters. It's the best sink and still looks great a year and a half later. The countertops look as good as the day they were installed. They are easy to clean and durable, just as we were told. All in all, it was a great experience.
I would never do business with the company or recommend it to anyone. If you choose to do business with them, make sure you go over your stone with a fine tooth comb at every step and do not make payment until the sealer dries. They would have been able to see the damage easily during the install, but chose to ignore them rather than discuss them with me. I understand that granite is a natural product with some inconsistency, but customer education and communication can go a long way. I might have chosen to accept the stone as is, but to present it as a finished product and hope I don't notice is not professional.
I would like to add that the company's response is shockingly inaccurate and, in places, complete lies. Frankly, I am in disbelief that this happened to us. Phil, I have pictures with a ruler showing the 9" scratch and documentation that I called both you and the sales person the day of the install expressing my dissatisfaction. If you want to choose to to business this way, I hope it catches up to you.
"We @ CounterTop Sales object to this Customer's claim. It was a busy Saturday morning the shop was hopping, we had several customers in the store. The sales person had talked with this customer earlier in the week and new she was coming in. This customer came in our door wanting to buy a remnant piece of granite to replace her kitchen counter tops. We happen to have a little more than ½ a slab of Black Granite called Moonraker left over from a job we did in February. This granite sales for $69.99 a Square foot. This is a beautiful Black stone with swirls all through it. The down side was this stone had been here a long time. This stone was a little banged up and had a lot of soft scratches in it. Some stones scratch hard and deep, but this stone would scratch easy but not deep. The customer was shown this slab, scratches and all. Her and her husband looked at this stone for a long time and took pictures before deciding to see if there was enough stone there to do her kitchen. It was explained to her that this is remnant which has no warranty and we sold it to them for $35.00 a square foot. Granite comes from Mother Earth, there is no warranty on Granite. The paper work was done and they set up an appointment to go over the layout of the counter tops on the stone. This was done with me and the saw guy, the man that cuts out the counter top shapes. The kitchen tops was laid out and marked, even the scratches with the customer. This customer knew where the scratches would be in the counter top. This scratch is about an inch and a quarter long, very light, it was almost white in color. We worked on that spot, the only thing we could get to work was some black ink and Akemi. (A product that helps cover up an imperfection in or on granite,) The counter top was installed and about two weeks later the customer started calling and screaming at anyone she could talk to. We set up a time to go out and look and try to see what we could do with it. We set up time for an afternoon appointment. Our installers run these appointments after their installation for the day. This was explained to here when the appointment was set. We are not a very big company we don’t have service people weighting around to run service calls. We might do this once a month. The customer called at about 1:00 yelling that they had a noon appointment. It was explained how we run our service calls from noon to four. And again, and the customer did the same thing again. An appointment was set for first thing Monday morning. We sent our installer out and talked with the customer and showed them that we couldn’t get anything in the scratch because it was so shallow of a scratch, and they said fine. And at this time it was still about an inch and a quarter long. The next thing we find is this complaint on Angie's list. About that 9” scratch, Really!!! This customer made a decision to purchase this stone in this condition. They had the choice of anything in the whole shop, and chose a banged up stone. We want everyone to be treated well at CounterTop Sales. Read our reports, we try hard to give each customer our best everyday. When does the customer become responsible for Their actions? When do I as a business owner become responsible for the customer's choice of anything he or she decides to buy. My responsibility is to not endanger the customer with what I sell. I struggle with this everyday and get asked why do I try so hard to please people? When things go wrong it kills me. I sometimes drive my employees crazy because our work needs to be done right not just good enough. I,m not telling the customer that I won't do anything to help, but, What is the right thing to do now? Now what and why! The customer will not return any calls at this point. The balls in her court. Phil"
