They are very professional. All the different people were on time each day and cleaned up everything each day. They were very thoughtful about keeping our daily needs in mind. They were good about keeping to the time table. I had changed my mind a couple of times, and they were flexible and went above and beyond to help me with ideas. I love my new kitchen and am very pleased with everything. The general contractor, Carl Long, and was good with communicating with me. The owner, Char Griffey, was always trying to please me and make me happy.

Overall it went very well. Charlie made sure he understood exactly what we wanted, was always punctual, and thorough (very detailed oriented). If we had a question or a concern, he was more than happy to help. Karl, the project manager, was very helpful in making sure things were done right. They did a great job and we are very happy!
Description of Work: We had a master bedroom added to the back of the house. It included a full bath and a walk-in closet.
The project went really well. Everyone was very professional throughout the process. Charlie spent time with us at the start to help us figure out exactly what we wanted. He was patient and asked good questions. We didn't have a precise idea of what we wanted and his design advice was very helpful. He was very good about letting us know how our choices would impact the project as far as cost, time-line and effect on other choices. Once the project got under way our project manager Karl was in touch with us on a regular basis letting us know how things were going. He was great about handling issues that came up (when dealing with a house that is 65 years old there will be issues). There were a couple of requests that we made for changes during the project that were handled with no problem. I would highly recommend hiring this company. Someone else can probably do it for less, but you'll get what you pay for. There were other companies that gave us bids that were slightly less, but they couldn't provide the value-add services like design advice that Griffey could.
Description of Work: Complete kitchen remodel. New cabinets, counter tops, appliances, sink, flooring. Old cabinets, counter tops and flooring were removed. The walls of the kitchen and dining room were painted. Some electrical work was needed to bring everything in the kitchen up to code.
Griffey Remodeling did an amazing job transforming our kitchen from drab (circa 1986) to dynamic! The workers were very professional, courteous, and conscientious. The project was completed on time, even though we added a few upgrades along the way. And, the project stayed on budget, except in areas where we opted to go over our budgeted amount, like selecting a higher grade of granite, and a more expensive sink. The products they used were top-notch, from the quality of the cabinetry to the look and durability of the stainless steel sink. We selected mid-range cabinetry price-wise, but looks-wise it appears more expensive because it is beautifully and solidly made. Griffey added nice carpentry details -- a wooden arch over the sink, crown modeling above the cabinets, finishing details on the bottoms of the over-head cabinets, etc. They spent time helping me with the counter selection and the tile selection, listening as I explained what I wanted, and helping me to come up with choices that maximized the visual impact, yet staying within my comfort zone as the homeowner. The project manager kept us informed every step of the way, and things ran very smoothly considering if was a multi-week process. Any project of this magnitude is disruptive and the floor project required us to be out of our home for three days, but we felt the Griffey employees worked to minimize our inconvenience as much as possible. The workers were very good with our dog, too, and we were worried about how the dog would cope with all the goings-on. Some of the workers were dog owners, and they would pet our dog each day and put her at ease. The workers also helped with little touches not really in their job description, whether it was re-hanging some pictures or installing a new under-the-counter radio/CD player. From top to bottom, Griffey Remodeling did an outstanding job, and we are in awe of our beautiful kitchen and the entire first floor of our home!
Description of Work: Griffey Remodeling did a complete kitchen overhaul -- new cabinets, new granite counters, new backsplash, added an island, new undermount sink and garbage disposal, new canned lighting in kitchen and adjoining family room, refurbished the hard wood floors throughout the first floor, painted the walls and baseboards in the kitchen, living room, dining room, family room, bathroom, and foyer.
They also came out this past spring and worked on our roof after a couple storms. The roof was a complete tear off and replacement. We have nothing but high praise for this company.
Description of Work: They remodeled a bathroom, kitchen, and flooring throughout the entire house. This included tile, wood floor, and some carpet. The bathroom was taking out a wall, reconfiguring the entire bathroom. The kitchen was new cabinetry, tilework, quartz countertops. We didn't need new appliances, however. Wood flooring was installed throughout most of the main level of our home.
We had been talking about remodeling the kitchen for a couple of years, but the idea of going several months without one kept delaying action. When our refrigerator quit working, we replaced it with a new stainless steel model which is the type of appliances we were planning to put in the new kitchen. This seemed to be the "push" we needed to begin the process. After talking with two other contractors in addition to Griffey, we decided to go with Griffey. It was a good decision. Charlie and Hahns came to the house and sat down with my husband and I to talk about what we wanted to do. Both were very professional, knowledgeable and helpful. The design that Hahns prepared was exactly what we were looking for and with a few minor tweaks we were on our way. Karl the production manager was great to work with. He provided a schedule at the beginning of the project so we knew when to expect each phase -- demolition, drywalling, cabinet installation, floor installation, etc He kept everything moving, kept us informed and answered all of our questions. Having never done anything like this before we were a bit overwhelmed at all of the choices that needed to be made, but Karl steered us to the right suppliers and helped make the decisions easy. Don, who did everything but the electrical and plumbing, made the day-to-day bearable. He arrived on time every morning and cleaned up before leaving every night. He was friendly, accommodating and knowledgeable. There were a few "hiccups" along the way, but Karl offered options and solutions to solve the problems. The project finished on time and we couldn't be happier with the results. I would definitely recommend Griffey for any remodeling project. A top-notch group of professionals!
Description of Work: We totally remodeled our 1987 kitchen which included, taking out soffits, tearing down half walls, re-working the kitchen workspace, moving my washer and dryer to the basement, adding an island, new cabinets, hardwood floors, granite countertops, backsplash, lighting and new appliances. We also re-modeled a small half bath off the kitchen which included tearing up old hardwood floors and laying new to match the kitchen, a new toilet, pedestal sink and cabinet and wall tiles. Finally, we wanted to lighten up the entryway so we put in a new window door, added some can lighting and also replaced the hardwood floor with new hardwood to match the kitchen.
We were very impressed by their professionalism and attention to detail. At the estimate stage they identified potential difficulties in demolition of the original tile floor and preparation of the surface for the new wood flooring, and prepared a plan B with impact on schedule and cost. Luckily this was never needed. Wrinkles such as late delivery of flooring (delays at the factory) and a last minute change in backsplash tile selection were handled with flexibility and patience. Change orders were accommodated quickly, with a quick and accurate estimate of impact on project cost and schedule. As promised, the site was cleaned at end of each working day and disruption to the household was minimized. Karl Long, project manager, was either on site or readily accessible by phone, returning calls promptly and answering any and all questions about the project. Don, master carpenter, was detail oriented, meticulous in his finishes and diligent about tidying the site at the end of each workday. When late delivery of flooring threatened to carry the planned installation process to a second week, Don worked longer days so that we’d have the bulk of the flooring in place before the weekend. Everyone who assisted on the project was hardworking, polite, and helpful. The project was completed on schedule, the kitchen turned out beautifully and we would certainly use Griffey and Associates again for other projects.
Description of Work: We hired Griffey and Associates for a partial renovation of our kitchen, involving installation of new wood flooring in the kitchen and foyer, replacement of existing countertops with granite, replacement of ceramic backsplash and fireplace surround with glass tile, installation of new sink and faucet, appliances and under cabinet lighting, and painting of the walls.
Generally communication with subcontractor was very good which made the job go well. The workmanship quality was high, and we were happy with the workmen. When we had an issue with placement of lights, the subcontractor worked hard to satisfy us.
Description of Work: Total remodel of kitchen down to the studs in 1960s house in suburban Columbus. We had floor tile removed and appliances moved. Cabinets, counter, tile and stove (with downdraft vent in the middle of the kitchen) were installed. We were looking for a high quality kitchen in a suburban kitchen for two adults in their fifties who like to cook together and entertain casually. We also had windows installed by a different contractor with whom we are friends.

Overall, the people involved were great - from design, to engineering, to project management to the individual tradesmen (concrete, electric, roofing, HVAC, etc.) all the way through punchout. Once things were rolling, they rolled along well - both on time and on budget. I gave a B grade on price simply because they were a bit more expensive than others were proposing, but we had friends who had used Griffey too and the quality is A+. You would not know that the addition was anything other than original. I have worked with a lot of contractors over the years on commercial buildings and residential units as well, and I would definately pay Griffey a 120 - 125% of anyone else. You get what you pay for, and they are worth a premium. I have been involved in many other remodeling projects where the trick seems to be "start the job (and as many other jobs as possible), and then stop answering the phone. This was NOT the case with Griffey. It was really the closest thing I have ever seen to "this is exactly what you will get." They neither over-promise nor under-promise. Meet Charlie, and trust that what he says is what will happen. He is not a typical contractor who seems like he is trying to sell you a used car. He listens and is low key. Tell him what you want, and that's what you'll get with no surprises.
Description of Work: We had an oversized (26 x 26) 2 car garage added which had to access a lower level. In addition, the lower level itself was turned into a walkout. Also, an area was added above the garage which includes a 15 x 18 office with a closet, and a walk-in 7x10 closet - all accessable from the existing master bedroom. Underpinning (and associated engineering) was necessary, as well as tying in into the current house. I would say this was far from a typical "add a two car garage with an office above it"."
I've used them in the past and they've always been excellent. They are very prompt and the work is done efficiently. They keep me informed about the job along the way and the work is very well done. I feel I can trust them.
Description of Work: They installed a utility sink and some windows in the basement. They also did some remodeling in a room in the basement. There were many odds and ends included in the work.

Within six months of purchasing a new home, my husband and I decided that the kitchen had to be remodeled. We chose to get an estimate from Griffey Remodeling because of their Angie's list rating. Charlie Griffey came to do the estimate and brought a representative from his cabinet supplier with him. We discussed what my husband and I had in mind and then Charlie worked up an estimate and showed us a floor plan. The work involved removing the old cabinets, appliances and installing new cabinets, appliances, sink and tile back splash. Charlie worked with us on making some changes to the plan that involved reworking the cabinet layout and the type of wood to be used for the cabinets. When the work started we were given a construction schedule. Karl Long, the project manager, was very good about keeping us informed about who would be doing what work and when. Don, the Griffey employee who did the majority of the demolition and installation, was very friendly, arrived promptly and cleaned up at the end of each day. Karl dealt promptly with any issues that arose during the project and followed up to ensure the work was being completed to our satisfaction. The project was completed a head of schedule and we are very happy with the results. My husband and I have received may compliments on the kitchen. I would certainly consider using Griffey Remodeling for future projects.

We took Brandon's advice and went directly through a granite distributor, so Griffey did not do the project. Again, we appreciate Brandon's honesty. I would definitely want a company like this one if I were to undertake a major renovation.
Description of Work: I was so impressed with Brandon's honesty when he came over to do a kitchen estimate for us. We had considerably downsized the original remodeling idea, and Brandon was forthright enough to tell us that it would be more expensive to go through his company than to hire a subcontractor, since the job was so small. He was extremely helpful with his recommendations and suggestions for granite/tile choices. It is a pleasure to meet a business representative with such integrity. Thanks, Brandon.
High quality workmanship.Charlie Griffey was very effective in setting up initial plans, Karl Long always accessible, Larry effective workmanship. All vendors helpful and qualified.
Description of Work: Update kitchen, new cabinets, sink, disposal, backsplash, new configuration of work space and refrigerator, new flooring, countertops. Update bath: vanity, toilet, floor. Replace windows, new frames on doorways.

Overall, the experience was not as good as I thought it would be (based on the other Angie's list reports). Charlie arrrived at my home on Monday (4/6/09), but once there he wasn't very personable. He came in, sat his materials on my countertop and proceeded to ask me about colors. There was no company overview, no product descriptions...nothing. Once I picked the samples I liked, he proceeded to start writing on his pad, but rarely said anything to me. Most of the time I had to initiate conversation just to hear more about his services. Surprisingly, he informed me that he would have to email me the estimate, and as he was preparing to leave, I had to remind him to MEASURE my countertops. At approximately 4:55pm on Wednesday (4/8/09), I called him because I had not received the estimate and the receptionist stated that she'd have to catch him before his 5:15pm meeting to respond to me. A few minutes afer we hung up I received the estimate, which was by far the highest estimate I've received. When I emailed Charlie to ask why his estimate was just over $1500 higher than the next highest estimate I received for the same services (demo, fabrication, installations, plumbing, etc.) from a contractor who also uses Hanstone quartz products, he told me basically that the competitor must have left something out of the estimate, and he (Charlie) would lose money the competitor's price. I believe that this is baloney since he's using the same brand of quartz products as the lower priced competitor. It seems that Charlie was miffed that I inquired about the status of the estimate and high-balled me on the price just to get rid of me. Well, it worked.
Description of Work: Sought estimate for replacing laminate countertops with quartz countertops.

Work exceeded our expectations. Start to finish about a week over original schedule due to delay in materials. We thought very timely. Excavated back yard with no damage to dozens of trees and bushes. Workmen very professional and responsive. Workmanship excellent. We couldn't love the addition more because it doesn't look like an addition inside or out. Looks like it has always been here. Came in right on budget with no surprises.
Description of Work: 10x14 foot room addition and reconfiguration of adjoining back room for new back entryway. Matched and extended hardwood flooring so it appears seamless. Five new Pella floor to ceiling windows and covered back porch. Also replaced to other windows.

We were very satisfied with our finished basement and greatly appreciated Griffey's focus on all details, small and large. They provided us with a floor plan of the basement and detailed contract to ensure we all agreed on scope of work. They also provided and closely followed a calendar detailing when each stage of the project would be started and finished. This was very important to me because I wanted to know who would be in my house and when. We also wanted to complete the project by Christmas, which also occurred. When they had to deviate from the schedule, the project manager Karl Long, was very good about keeping us informed. They did a great job communicating throughout the project so we knew what was going on and when. They finished on time and within budget.
Description of Work: Griffey Remodeling finished our approximately 850 square foot basement, which included a large rec room, full bath and bed room. They also added an egress window and increased the size of a second existing window. They completed every aspect of the job from framing, carpentry, painting, plumbing, electrical, HVAC, flooring, etc.

We needed a new kitchen floor and wanted to install tile to help with the value of the house. When looking into that, we realized that we might need new shelving, countertops and backsplash as the current ones would have to be replaced since the floor would be raised too high with the tile. We went to a large home improvement store and were quoted $35000-40000 for the work. Back to square one, we contacted Griffey. Brandon came to our home, told us to just get linoleum (that looked like tile) because we would never get back the value of everything else and that would look just fine. WE LOVE IT! It looks like tile, was much less expensive and made the kitchen look very updated without doing all of the other work. We appreciated how honest they were with us when they could have gotten much more money for themselves! We also love the carpet we had installed to update the rest of the floor level. They suggested the perfect type!
Description of Work: New linoleum installed in kitchen, bath and laundry area. New carpet was installed in family room and office.
I have used this company twice and they are so fast and professional. Also, I really trust and value the design ideas they provide and the price quotes. I have never felt that I was being taken advantage of or the work was just another sale to this group. The work completed was beautiful and has held up so well (esp. with two toddlers)
Description of Work: Installed a tile backsplash in kitchen as well as hardwood floors in living and family rooms. Also replaced water damages flooring in basement with carpet and slate tile.

We interviewed several contractors, and we really enjoyed the personality of John Grimm, the project manager who came to our house. He was very personable and we could tell that he "knew his stuff." We decided to go with Griffey & Associates on a hunch that they would fit our needs very well. And that hunch was correct. We were able to make many decisions about the colors of the paint, the insulation used in the ceiling (for reducing sound from one floor to the next), the light fixtures, bathroom tiles, etc. John gave us his advice too, to help us pick out items that fit with the overall look and feel of the space. John paid attention to every detail to make sure that the space was comfortable to live in and somewhere that we would want to spend time. Just a quick story that I have to share: We are a very animal friendly house. We love all kinds of animals. When the egress window well was finished, we had several small animals (frogs and chipmunks) get stuck in the well. John helped my husband and I rescue them all and set them free back out in the lawn. He even helped us when the chipmunk took off into our basement - now that was hilarious (and chaotic). It was certainly nothing that he had to help with, but the fact that he respected that we just couldn't let them die in the window well really spoke volumes about his character. He then quickly got the grate in place on top of the well so that no more animals would accidentally fall in. It turned out great! We love the space! Both of our parents have informed us that they'll be moving in soon, as it doesn't even feel like a basement because it was finished so nicely! Thanks John and Griffey & Associates for a job well done!
Description of Work: We had approximately 1,200 square feet of our basement finished. We had a nice size bedroom, 3/4 bath, media room with surround sound, and an open rumpus room finished off as well as several closets. The whole space (including floor and ceiling) was finished off as well as an egress window installed.

Charlie 'and company' is Phenomenal! I have needed new bathroom sinks for a long time. I was having an impossible time getting someone to just replace the sinks without doing a 'total bathroom remodel.' I read all the reports on Griffey & Associates and thought they probably wouldn't want to fool with such a small job like mine, but I called anyway. Charlie understood the difficulty I was having finding someone to help and agreed to do the job. I have a 20-year-old MI home and the two bathrooms are small. I love the small bathrooms but they can present a challenge. I needed sinks made in the same style I had due to not being able to lose any 'counter space.' The first cultured marble supplier Charlie used couldn't help but he continued to look for someone who could. He found a company that even offered a color choice very similar to what I had. Also I never considered adding shut-off valves-what a good idea. There were some minor challenges with the sinks but Charlie gave it his personal attention and they look great! Now I am considering replacing the tiles around my bathtub with cultured marble(It may even be less expensive than those companies that do the 'one-day, one-piece tile/bathtub' coverings). Also I am considering replacing my kitchen countertops. For years I have found remodeling fraught with headaches and hassles. You don't have to worry about that with Griffey & Associates.
Description of Work: "Mini" Bathroom remodeling. In two bathrooms removed existing countertop, faucet, water supply lines and waste trap assemblies. Installed two cultured marble countertops with standard oval bowls, new faucets, shut-off valves, water supply lines, and PVC waste trap assemblies. Also installed a new 30" x 36" mirror with polished edge in one bathroom.

Mr. Griffey was very responsive and politely explained that he does not perform this kind of service. He told us to feel free to contact him in the future for other building services.
Description of Work: Contacted Mr. Griffey to discuss straightening our detached garage due to a tree that had fallen on it during the September wind storm.
Griffey and Associates did a great job. We love our new kitchen and bathroom. The kitchen is functional and beautiful. Charley and Hans came to our house and listened to unusual design requests such as storage reaching up to the nine and half foot tall ceilings, an oversized corner cabinet and a large appliance garage. They made very good suggestions. We were delighted when the initial design incorporated everything we discussed. They were very patient and helpful during the three months it took us to modify design details and finalize materials and cabinet style. Karl, the project leader did an excellent job directing the work and handling the surprises that occur when working on an old house. Karl designed the bathroom renovation. He brought in and coordinated very good sub-contractors. The team that repaired the beams and foundation was experienced working with old structures and very competent. The father and son who installed the tile exuded craftsmanship and quality. The electrician, painters, and plasters were also good craftsmen. The kitchen cabinets were installed by Griffey employees who are skilled carpenters and work for perfection. We are glad we chose Griffey and have recommended them to friends.
Description of Work: Kitchen remodel that turned into a massive general contracting job when it was discovered during demolition of the old kitchen that the corner of the house was sitting on air. The project was expanded to include foundation and structural repair, replacing all plumbing leading to the upstairs bathroom, remodeling the bathroom and installing new electrical box. DEMOLITION: The kitchen cabinets and appliances, plaster, electric wiring, and plumbing were removed to expose beams in the two outside walls and ceiling. Half of the kitchen floor was removed and the crawl space below the kitchen was dug deeper to expose the foundation and beams supporting the floor. The old plumbing leading to the upstairs bathroom which ran through the ceiling beams was removed. Plumbing, wall and floor tile were removed from the upstairs bathroom. STRUCTURAL REPAIR: An engineer and architect were brought in to determine the best way to structurally repair a house built around 1840. Griffey brought in a sub-contractor with experience renovating barns to shore up the house and fix the foundation. The contractor built temporary supports to jack up the house; replaced and/or sistered beams in the floor, walls, and ceiling; repaired sixteen feet of foundation by injecting concrete into the old stone foundation and replacing the wooden foundation sill. Outside walks were replaced and the grounds were graded to direct water away from the foundation. KITCHEN: New cabinets, quartz and butcher block counter tops, and tile back splash were installed on three walls. Window moldings were replaced. Valances and shelving were built above the windows. A custom appliance garage and a table height butcher counter were built. A base cabinet for recycling with a bookcase above it was put in the family room. Electrical work included a new box, wiring, eight ceiling cams, two pendant lamps, four under cabinet lights, and two lights under window valances. All plumbing, including pipes, drains and toilet stack serving the upstairs bathroom was replaced. Insulated exposed walls, plaster boarded kitchen walls and ceilings, repaired plaster in attached family room. The kitchen and family room were painted and a vinyl floor was installed.. BATHROOM: Replaced all plumbing, the stack, and toilet. Repaired sub-flooring under toilet and installed a new tile floor. Insulated wall behind tub, added wood backing for grab bars, new cement board, and wall tile around existing tub. Installed an exhaust fan. One plaster wall was demolished in order to rewire and insulate. Installed plaster board on one wall, skim coated ceiling and walls. Repaired and replaced wooden baseboards. Painted walls and existing built in cabinets. Reinstalled sink cabinet, medicine cabinet and lights.
