We contracted with Gliatas Construction Inc. (principal owner Marc Gliatas) for a 12 week, $40,000 renovation of our master bath in early Sept 2011. Gliatas never completed the job. (Even with uncomfortable large extensions in the contract schedule). Our master bath remained a demolished unusable shell for over 6 months. There was never any explanation provided for the unreasonable delays, or to what had happened. A serious problem was that we had paid him in excess of $40,000 in advance to complete the project. Gliatas (to the best of our knowledge, also never paid many of the subcontractors or suppliers.) It was an absolute nightmare. The exact scenario you do your best to try and avoid. This debacle required us to take over the renovation and figure out how to have the project completed ourselves, costing an additional $15,000 plus, and legal fees. We retained an attorney and obtained a Municipal Court judgment for the $15,000, but we could not collect it. Gliatas Construction filed for bankruptcy. In reviewing the local court dockets, it was observed that other actions are pending against the corporation with claims for similar non-performance. There seems to be a negative pattern for the homeowners. ***Be advised, prior to Gliatas Construction Inc. filing for bankruptcy September 2012, in April 2012 Gliatas Contracting LLC, was filed with the Ohio Secretary of State. It is recommended to thoroughly research Franklin County Municipal Court records, Franklin County Civil Court records, complaints filed with the Ohio Attorney General and complaints with the Better Business Bureau.

Work finally commenced the week after Thanksgiving and our kitchen was gutted except for the oven, microwave, sink and dishwasher. We had a 4 ft. counter top above the dishwasher by the sink, which was a laundry sink being used temporarily. We paid the draws according to our contract until in March when we should have been ready for the cabinets to be installed any day we learned that Mr. Gliatas had used our money elsewhere and did not have any funds to pay for the cabinets, counter tops, plumbing fixtures, electrical supplies and even some of the sub contractors. Since we could not live without a kitchen and Mr. Gliatas admitted he didn't know when he would have the funds to complete our project and we had no choice but to shell our an additional $34,000 to complete the project. At first Mr. Gliatas wanted to finish the labor portion, then it got to a point that he wouldn't show up for two weeks at a time and finally we had to tell him never to show up again and hired someone else to complete the project. We do now have a beautiful kitchen, 1/2 bath, laundry room and front and back hallways, but it took from November 2011 until October 2012 to finish everything up when the original estimate was 16 weeks. We should have known there was trouble about to happen when after we had written a check for one of the draws at Christmas and were traveling to be with relatives Mr. Gliatas kept calling wanting to know if we could contact someone at our bank to confirm with his bank the check would clear shortly. We of course consulted with an attorney and unfortunately there is little protection for the consumer in these cases where the contractor walks off with their money.
Description of Work: In Sept. of 2011 we signed a contract to have our kitchen, 1/2 bath, laundry room, front and rear hallways remodeled. The project was to include raising the dropped ceiling in the kitchen, moving heat ducts, electrical and plumbing lines, new floors throughout the area, new custom kitchen cabinets, granite counter tops, gas cook top, wine cooler, new vanity toilet, new laundry room cabinets and granite counter top in the laundry.

We had gotten four estimates and every company told us that it would be about an 8 week job. Marc Gliatas' estimate was not the cheapest but it had the best design for our home. Marc told us that the 8 week time frame would start after all the items that we picked out arrived, because once he started he did not want to have to wait on anything else. The exceptions were the paint color for the walls, the lighting package, and the railing for the stairway because that would be the last item to go in. We signed the original contract on May 4, 2009. Construction was well under way by July 4, 2009, because that was when the new kitchen window and patio door were put in while we were on vacation. By every one's estimate the job should have been done by September. Unfortunately many weeks went by when we would not see Marc or either of his two employees or only see them one or two days out of the week. The contract called for the new railing to be supplied bt Fortin Ironworks, Inc. however when we visited thier showroom at various times there was never the right person there to help us with our selections. Their employees asked us to have our contractor contact them. Marc finally did contact them and was surprised to learn that they were no longer doing that type of work. It was well into November when we were given the website of another manufacturer and assured that the railing would be fabricated and installed by Christmas. Also in November, we decided to add the new front door to the project which was an option at that time because the tile had not been laid in the foyer yet nor was the new closet door in that area installed. We signed the change order for the door and paid for it on December 2, 2009, with Marc' assurance that it would be installed by Christmas. Well none of that was done by Christmas. Marc was not aware that the Therma-tru door company closed down for the holidays in early December just as he was not aware that Fortin Ironworks would no longer supply us with our stairway railing until we were well into the process. When we asked Marc when the door would be installed, he informed us that it would have to wait until after the weather broke. It was installed during the first week of April 2010. Additionally because the new kitchen window and patio door were not stained to match their trim when they were installed in July, 2009, Marc had his guys complete that in May. We signed off on the job being complete and made the final payment on June 2, 2010. That was an entire year plus one month after we signed the initial contract on May 4, 2009. Marc' website and promotional materials tout his service as being, "On Time and On Budget" because he realizes that is what his customers want, that will give them the VALUE they desire deserve and expect. We did not receive that value. We cannot recommend Marc for any large remodeling projects like we had. Marc and his two workers would be "handyman" pros.
Description of Work: We had our kitchen completely remodeled. Our dining room and living room were included. Walls were removed and hardwood flooring was added. Granite counter tops were added along with a large kitchen island and side buffet. Kitchen cabinets were replaced along with the refrigerator, convection-microwave oven and exhaust hood. A new TV was installed in the cabinets. Kitchen window was enlarged and a patio door and front doors of the home were replaced. New carpeting and railing were installed on the staircase. Tile backsplash was added. A new closet door and tile flooring was added to the entryway. The entire area was painted including the ceilings. New lighting was added throughout, and a new kitchen sink and disposal were installed. The plumbing for the entire kitchen was redone.

Response from Gliatas Construction Inc
I was quite surprised that the report was made June 2nd and was even more surprised when the complaint was made August 18th. My last conversation with the member was June 7th. We had a few warranty items to complete and he had asked us to remove his light pole which we did at no charge. He had also asked me to measure and price a new patio door for the master bedroom. I took measurements and proceeded to get pricing when before I could get the pricing back to him I received an email from Angie’s List that report had been made. When I read the report and he had stated that he would not hire us again I felt that there was no need to give him pricing for the new door. There are many items that I feel are inaccurate and I will only mention a few. The first is that this was by no means an 8 week job. I never said this would be done in 8 weeks. This was a major renovation and involved the City of Columbus for building/structural permit, electrical permit, HVAC permit and a plumbing permit. We did get started June 24th. As we started the demolition we discovered that there were structural issues that needed to be corrected. Because of these structural issues we had to revise the drawings and submit for an amended building permit which was approved July 20th. We did not charge for the structural changes, revised drawings or resubmitting for the building permit. This did delay the project and this was definitely beyond our control. I do believe that the window and patio door did go in while they were on vacation but were not installed until July 15th. July 21st we started work on the mechanicals – electrical, plumbing and HVAC and during this time only our jobsite supervisor would have been there making sure our contractors did their appropriate work to our standards. The inspections for electrical, plumbing, HVAC and structural were completed by August 13th. We would not have had any of our employees there on regular basis during drywall, drywall finishing and painting. The members were fine with our contractor coming in without us. The contract did include a new metal railing to be supplied by Fortin Ironworks. It was set up as an allowance and that was our suggested place to obtain their new railing. This was set up as an allowance because they could not find what they wanted. Yes I was surprised that they were not doing interior steel railings anymore. I did locate another company that does interior steel railings and they did find some styles that they liked. I did say in the beginning of December that we could have it fabricated and installed by Christmas. The members could not finalize on a style and color and the final drawing was not signed by him until December 17th. At this time they also decided to strip and stain the existing oak treads and paint the risers on the stairway. The stain was to match their new hardwood flooring. This needed to be done before the railing was installed. At this point the railing could not be installed by Christmas. The front door was an option because the foyer flooring had not been completed. The foyer flooring was the last thing to do since the front door was the only real entrance to the project area. The closet door was not in the original contract it was added at the same time as the front door. There were in two separate change orders. I was told that the door would be available before Christmas by my supplier. Unfortunately it was not. The weather was not very helpful last winter. This front door is fully exposed to the elements, no porch or overhang. This is a very nice and costly door and I would not want it installed in bad weather. The patio door and window that had been installed were not stained and finished because at time we did not have an approval on the stain color. They were not completed until May because when our painter was doing the finish painting and staining in November the weather was not cooperating. They would have to be left open to finish them properly. I do agree that it went on longer than anyone had hoped. But 95% of the project had been completed by the mid November. There were a number of items that could not be decided on from time to time, this is typical of most homeowners and we have found that is best not to rush their decisions. I know that whenever they called I returned their call the same day. All in all I believe this is a superior renovation project and have enjoyed working with the members.

It was a small job and they were able to find time in between other jobs to come out and do all of the repair work. They were very professional. The owner of the company came out with his partner and two other assistants. They had the whole thing down within four hours. I was very pleased with their service.
Description of Work: Gliatas Construction Incorporated came out to replace the sixteen foot joist in our crawl space and some additional repair work from a termite infestation.
