Mike responded within 12 hours to my call for help. Our refrigerator, sump pump, and air conditioner suddenly stopped working when each of the small surge protectors safeguarding them were destroyed by a power burst on a perfectly clear, sunny day. We had just returned from vacation, and we couldn't help thinking we would have been in big trouble, since no one would have noticed the problem until it was too late. When we replugged the units into wall without the ruined protectors, they came back on, but the air conditioner compressor had a hole blown in it, and would have to be replaced. We wanted the new ac, the refrigerator and sump pump protected from another future spike. We were able to set up an appointment within 1 day. He came promptly and installed a whole house surge protector that can protect from electrical upswings or even lightning strike. He was polite, informative and kind in his dealings with me, traits I find just as indispensable in a repairman as knowledge of the problem at hand. In the past, Mike has installed lights, ceiling fans, and chandeliers for us. He has answered questions and offered suggestions. After calling Mike about the surge protector, we discovered another problem - namely, rainwater pouring out a corner of the electrical panel box, and splashing into our basement. We didn't know where or how the water was getting in, but it wasn't flowing down the wall. It appeared to be coming from the outside electric service meter, inside the conduit, and into the electric panel. You could see drips falling from the fuse switches inside the door. I called two handymen and a plumber who fixes leaks; all suggested I talk to an electrician because of the hazard and the unknown quality of the problem. When Mike came out, he agreed to help us solve the rainwater leak too, and began to diagnose where the water could be entering the system, all the while explaining it to me. I need to see it to believe it. Since I thought the problem was from water carried down the wires from the electric meter, he checked inside the electrical meter box, but he showed me there was no evidence of water. He pointed out the large stuccoed gap between the meter box and the back of the house, since that was another possible entry point. Back in the basement, he removed the electrical panel faceplate and took apart the panel, until he discovered rust on the underside of the lid of the panel, hidden from view. The rainwater was thus entering between the meter box and the wall of the house. We were very pleased that Mike had found our entry point. Now, we thought we would have the problem of filling the gap before it rained again, and I knew my handymen weren't available. Mike offered to get the proper silicone caulk and filler from the hardware store that day and finish the job so it was water-tight. That was service above and beyond the call of duty. He's a wonderful electrician.
