About us

I strive to do quality, professional restoration for each and every client through my attention to detail, accurate craftsmanship, and honing my skills and knowledge over the past 25+ years. This is a part-time home business by Appointment. Located in the Clintonville neighborhood of Columbus, Ohio. Please include: Clear photos of the woven panel (including both front and back sides) Dimensions of the panel at the widest point side-to-side and top-to-bottom. Email: [email protected] Text: (614) 906-4363 Due to high demand and limited work time I am not currently offering in-person estimates. No phone call estimates. About: E. Emza Uphill is a 4th generation master furniture weaver with over 2 decades of experience. At the age of 14 she started apprenticing under her father Bill, of the former Bill's Caning & Rushing; first learning how to hand cane, then sheet cane, and rush weave chairs, canoe panels, and other functional items. Once she mastered those techniques she took on Splint, Danish Cord, Danish Peel, Shaker Tape, Hickory, and advanced techniques in Caning. She received her BFA from The Ohio State University and a MFA from University of Colorado at Boulder. Her favorite pieces to restore are the challenging Hans Wegner, Niels Otto Møller, and Danish Modern chairs. Most require extensive knowledge of traditional techniques, but because of their often "one off" weaving design they also require the ability to apply known skills with reverse engineering. Emza also enjoys family heirlooms and the special stories and histories that come with them. She considers it an honor to help facilitate the restoration of these pieces to live on for future generations. You can be confident that your pieces of furniture will be in skillful hands!

These old chairs are once again as good as new. They are 100 or more years old and belonged to my husband's grandparents. Their followup email also included instructions for helping them survive longer.

Great! She picked up the chair, re-caned the back and stained it, and returned it in a couple weeks. Good job at a reasonable price.

As a folklorist, I was delighted to learn about caning from someone who has a history of caning in her family. I had tried two or three times to find someone who could do a good job for me here in Columbus, but until I found Esma was very disappointed with the work. It is really specialized!! Yesterday when I got my chairs, she explained the history of the antique chair including special "new" techniques for bending the wood and information about the company that made the chair (showed me the maker's mark) and about when it was made. I started taking notes. Why not? With the 1980s chairs, she took it upon herself to remove the unbroken chair seat from one chair to put with the unbroken back caning on another so that the cane that had nicely aged would match. I didn't even think of that, and it was an extra step for her. This thoughtfulness seems to illustrate her creativeness and her love for her craft.

The chairs were completed within the time frame provided. The job was gorgeous! The chairs are so nice, the color, the quality, the detail are all super excellent. Emza does all the work herself and is very skilled in her work. She is also professional, kind and a delight to deal with. She carefully explained all the options for finishing the chairs. She is able to do a variety of techniques which she can offer and has a examples to show you when you go in to her home shop. She thoroughly describes the process, the materials, and costs to help you make an informed decision. I am so pleased with her work and would highly recommend her services and artistry to all.

Emza did an outstanding job on very valuable antique chairs. Her pricing was quite reasonable for such specialized work and done in a timely manner.

I brought her the chairs and she took about 2 weeks for the caning but repaired the splint seat on the spot so I didn't have to leave the chair. She did excellent work and I plan to reuse her again.
