The quality of the fence was fine when they first put it in. They put in 6X6 posts and since then the toppers for the posts have split. They told me they would replace them and they did, but since then, they have warped and split again. I also originally wanted cedar and they didn't use cedar.
Description of Work: They built a new privacy fence for me and tore down the old one.
Micah and Jeff were great to work with. Their crew was here on time and went the extra mile to get the work done during one of the hottest weeks of the summer. Our project was complete in time for a party at our home. We are thrilled with the end result.
Description of Work: We had our front walk way taken out and those stones repurposed as a path along the side of the house. The front walk was redesigned and created, landscaping across the front of the house, landscaping along the side of the house.
They were excellent and asked if they could do anything else before they left. They were great. They do a good job. They came out with a supervisor. Everything was done. They walked us around the perimeter, asked what we wanted done and they did it all.
Description of Work: Dean Landscape Construction did a spring cleaning of the front and backyard. They put topsoil down, mulched, trimmed and replanted.

We built a garage and need someone to haul away excess soil and provide proper grading for drainage away from the foundation. We met with several landscaping contractors and were impressed with Micah. His quote was in line with the others so we hired him. The first problem was when he decided to send a crew out while I was out of town. He did not notify me that work would be starting. I was startled to return from vacation and see things out of place in the back yard. I quickly figured out that he must have gotten started so I calmed down. Then I noticed there was damage to my garage siding. I called him right away. He denied that his workers caused the damage, but of course he wasn't there to know for sure. He offered to try to fix it anyway, which I appreciated. Long story short, they did a crap job of the fix and I ended up repairing it all myself. I understand that this could have been vandalism and not at all Micha's fault, but since he showed up to work when I was on vacation without telling me, we will never know. Now to the real problem, the work was not done as agreed. I specifically asked for the grade to slope away from the garage, as I was told to do by the city inspectors. When he was done it was still sloping noticeably towards the foundation. They simply had not removed enough of the excess soil. He grudgingly returned to talk it through with me. He marked out an area to have soil removed and we agreed on it. When I came home that day I found that soil had indeed been removed, but I was basically left with a moat. I had to rent a tiller to break up the soil and spend 2 days grading it myself. We finally agreed on a discounted invoice and settled the matter. I understand that there are bound to be mistakes and mis-communications, but the sad part is that I gave him every chance to set it right. He had also quoted a fence project and we were about to hire him for that as well, but had second thoughts. It he would have stepped up and handled the issues with more care and professionalism, he would have received more work from us on the spot.
Description of Work: removed excess soil from previous construction job, graded site.

Response from Dean Landscape Construction
We can begin with scheduling: when a job is estimate and the customer gives the go ahead a crew will be there as soon as possible unless otherwise noted. There was no "call ahead" requested by the customer so the job was completed on the asap basis. As for "damaging" the shed: the damage done to the shed was either vandalism or poor construction. The siding was falling off the garage and [member name removed] seemed to think we were responsible since we were on site. This garage is located on an alley with high traffic. The only way this damage could have been done by Dean Landscape was if it were hit with the Bobcat skid steer. However, anyone familiar with a skid steer knows that if wood is bumped by a skid steer hard enough to make siding fall off there would be some sort of a scuff or scratch of some kind, especially painted wood siding. There were absolutely no signs of damage, the siding was simply displaced. However Dean Landscape did go the extra step to attempt to fix the siding knowing they were in no way responsible for the damage. The grading work was done exactly as specified in the estimate. The grade was to be a rough grade and simply run away from the garage. This work was done as the estimate noted and [member name removed] then asked that we come back to create a swail so any additional water could run off the lawn. This work was part of the original estimate, not part of the modified (reduced cost) estimate. Although this was not part of the estimate we agreed to go back to help resolve this additional issue at no additional charge. As [member name removed] noted, the job was done at a low price and this was after multiple modifications to the original estimate minimizing the cost thus minimizing the job. So basically what happened was we estimated one project but that price was more than the budget allowed. So in order to help the customer we reduced the cost and the project. Then somewhere along the way the project seemed to lean more toward the original estimate than the reduced estimate. Although we went back at least four times to help resolve the additional issues at no additional cost. In fact we even further reduced the final bill because we want all customers to be happy. Apparently there are cases where this is simply not possible. At Dean Landscape we are fully aware things come up along the way through out a project, some good and some bad. The important thing is the way those things are handled after the fact. We make every possible effort to make every customer happy, many times at the expense of the company. I can't tell you how many jobs we have actually lost money on simply because we go out of our way to make the customer happy. This was certainly one of those projects and unfortunately the result was the opposite of what we were going for.

Micah and his team have been great to work with. He's always been fairly easy to get a hold of (especially considering this is the busiest time of the year), and has given us great service. I've received many quotes for yard work in the past and have typically gone with the cheapest provider. On a recommendation of a friend, we gave this company a shot, and I think Dean Landscape well priced for the quality of work. His workers have been professional and very nice, and we're thrilled with our new backyard. We'll be using them again in the future.

I called Dean while at work, and they showed up that evening to look over the job. We explained the situation, and he estimated about $50 per bush. Before I had tried it myself, that would have sounded high. But knowing what I knew, that was just right. He explained he was booked for the rest of the week, but would it be OK to show up unannounced and remove them next week? Seeing as how no access was needed to the home, we were just fine with that. A few days later, a team of three guys showed up at the house and got to work. We chatted a bit about the difficulty I had, and they agreed the bushes were a bear, but they kept after them. About an hour and a half later, they had the bushes out, the holes filled back in and the area raked and clean. The guys were friendly, professional and it was an overall really positive experience. Will definitely hire them again.
Description of Work: We had six beautiful flowering bushes next to our garage that had simply gotten out of control. Plus, they were planted by the previous owners right against the house. I spent almost an entire Saturday and an hour here and there during the following week just trying to get ONE of those bushes out of there, but there were just too many roots which were too thick and too deep. I finally called in Dean to take care of it for me.

Micah Dean came out and gave me an estimate. When it came to discussion of replacement plantings he did not seem to be very knowledgeable. He suggested including day lillies. I requested varied colors. He said he didn't think they were available. Oakland Nursery nearby has at least six colors and online, dozens of colors can be found. Oh well, his estimate was considerably lower than others so I signed on the dotted line...even prepaid so that the work could be done if I was not in town. Micah promised to call at least the night before to let me know when they were coming. He called on the Morning of the 24th and said they were on their way to my house. I was an hour and a half away at the time and so by the time I loaded up and came home they were almost finished. They had not done some of the work around the deck but had done a lot of other stuff that had not been discussed. That part looked great so I said fine but I still wanted the work around the deck done. The work crew was pretty defensive saying that they only do what their boss tells them.....okay, that's fine. I called Micah and he came out later that night and finished the job. Obviously he did not supervise his crew......and I didn't get back in time to oversee or this could all have been prevented. Quality of the plantings was not the greatest. Plants were unevenly spaced with several too close together and some of not very good quality. Their estimate was by far the lowest of the three I received so I guess I got my money's worth but if you hire these people, just know that you are getting bargain work for a bargain price.

Attempts were made to re-schedule the appointment for the estimate, we did not hear back from Ivan to reschedule. No work was performed.
I would highly recommend Micah. He made an appointment for the next day after I contacted him, was punctual and very professional. I found his prices to be very reasonable. And I am extremely happy with the quality of the work. Our patios and walkway look wonderful as do the retaining walls and privacy fence. The excavation was quick and efficient, as was the removal and construction. There were a few problems that arose which were addressed and resolved .
Description of Work: Micah provided hard-scape, tree removal and fencing. His team excavated and installed two patio areas on either side of our house and one walkway along the side of our garage. Two paver retaining walls along our garage and one treated timber retaining wall were also installed to provide raised beds. A chain link fence was removed and hauled away. In it's place a six-foot privacy fence and gate were installed. We also had two 30 foot trees removed and the stumps ground and removed.

I waited 5 days for an appointment for a quote due to the how busy he said he was. I changed some plans in order to be available when he said they could come and no one showed up nor did anyone call me to apologize or re-schedule. I am shocked that companies can survive with this low level of professionalism. Or that any company today can afford to just blow off a paying job.

Overall, the service was delivered as contracted. I was pleased and thankful for the hard work.
Description of Work: I dug out for an egress window 7ft wide by 5ft by 6 ft deep. I had approximately 10 yards of wet Ohio clay that needed removed. I called a number of excavation companies and other landscape companies and none were willing to remove the dirt. Micah actually answered the phone. We discussed the size of the job, he gave me a quote over the phone then came out later that evening to assess the job and write a contract for the job. His guys came out Thursday, completed half the job and returned Friday at 9 am. After completing the job and taking loads to the fill, they told me it was approximately 9 tons of wet clay (wow). They had to use my neighbors drive for their truck, and after finishing the job they power washed the drive and cleaned everything as well as doing a walk through to make sure I was satisfied. Quality work and time commitment met as agreed in contract.

I contacted this company for an estimate for lawn aeration. The owner was very pleasant and gave me a phone estimate which I agreed to. He said he was busy that week, but could do it the following week. I waited till Thursday of the following week and called again to make sure he didn' t forget me. I was told his guy was doing aerations, but If it rained he couldn't get to it. I agreed and it did rain. The following week, I called again and was told again that his guy was doing lawn aerations on Friday again and I was on the list. No one ever showed up and I got tired of calling about it. So my lawn never got aerated this Fall. I would never recommend this company just for the poor communications and total lack of interest in a paying job.

Work good, estimating of time for a quote, terrible.
Description of Work: I bought one of the Angie's List specials for 3 hours of leaf clean-up for $79.00. After delaying 2 x (they did call) they came out with a crew to rake and remove the leaves. We have several tall pin oaks that drop a lot of leaves so I knew it was a big job. The owner called part way through the job and said they would need more time, he said it would cost $50 to $100 more than the original $79. I thought that seemed reasonable given the amount of leaves so I told him to go ahead. He said he would bill me for the additional work. When I got the bill I was VERY surprised that the bill was for $186.81.... more than 3 times the lower end of his telephone quote. Their work was fine- they did a good job raking, blowing and removing the leaves, but their estimating capabilities leave a lot to be desired. I would not use them again because their quote would not be trustworthy.

The leaf removal was a BIG DEAL offered through Angies List. The BIG DEAL was 4 man hours of leaf removal for $199.00. This included vaccuming the leaves up when finished clearing them from the property. As Member mentioned, there were a large volume of leaves on the property which took longer than the 4 hours alloted by the pre-paid BIG DEAL. Just as she mentioned when the guys got close to the four hour mark they called me to let me know and I relayed the message to her. I explained to her the rate for additional leaf removal was $50 per man hour and my foreman on site projected it would take them an additional hour or two to complete the job. I believe she was billed extra for approximately 3.5 man hours, which if divided by two (the number of laborers on site) it falls right in the price range of $50 to $100. I understand man hours and billable hours can get confusing and I do apologize for this. Given the opportunity, I would gladly attempt to correct this situation however is deemed necessary. Sincerely, Micah Dean 614-949-5060

I used Dean Landscaping before for yard cleaning, mulch and lawn installation and was satisfied with the service, so when I saw this deal on Angies List of 4 hours of leaf removing with vacuum truck for $199, I didn't hesitate much to buy. I had difficulty reaching Micah at first since he was on vacation. But he called me back when he was available. Due to their workload, then the weather condition, the work was done about 2 weeks after I first contacted him. Fortunately we still had one weekend before Christmas to set up yard decoration. On the day, he sent two sub-contractors over. When they arrived I happened to be home, so asked for their estimate of the workload. They told me they should be able to finish in 2 hours (4 man hour); but if not, Micah would give me the same promotion rate. I did get a voicemail that afternoon and later a bill of $50 for an extra man hour. The back yard where they started was quite clean, but the front yard seemed to be finished roughly with some beds left undone at all.I first thought probably they didn't want to charge me more and were in a rush. But my babysitter told me that they worked from 1:10pm ~ 3:20pm. So they should still have 20 minutes for a better work with the extra $50. I usually hesitate to purchase services by hours, since I don't know how much work could be finished in the amount of time. So past experience and Angie's list reviews are helpful for the choice of a reliable service provider. I personally really trust Micah, but not sure about the sub-contractors.
