The job went great. Dave was super responsive and came out to check out the job. We talked through some options on how to frame and trim the French doors that I had manufactured. Dave assigned Andy who came out on time and did a fantastic job. He took his time another doors, framing and created some custom trim work. The job went very well and would definitely hire Dave again.

The work was completed on budget and on time, extremely satisfied.

Dave communicated poorly, overbilled me and quit the job when I politely questioned if he could confirm what type of work was done for the 10 hours I was being billed. As another reviewer mentioned, "time and materials" seems fair until you get multiple text messages telling you that he wants paid because the deposit is used up. He's quite rude - which no one really needs. Also, be aware Dave bills for estimating projects ... when a subcontractor showed up to do a project that was incorrectly estimated (Dave doesn't listen very well) on the outside of my home, I sent him away because that wasn't what was needed - he left the wood, billed me for the wood and the time to look at the project. Really? If you aren't doing the job, why would I buy the wood from him? I'm being held hostage because he took the deposit money. If you want the pain of working with Dave, my suggestions would be: 1. get a firm estimate plus materials 2. ask if he will charging for estimating the project 3. give him only 1/3 of the estimate as a deposit just in case he walks away from the project. But really, don't work with Dave. He speaks about being "honest" ... don't be fooled.

I don't know who this [Member Name Removed] person is. Never met her..so as far as her knowing I'm rude, lol. I met with, talked with, signed with [Redacted]. We agreed to a price and the scope of the work to be done. He signed my proposal & gave a deposit. We agreed to a day to start. Materials were paid for, brought to his house and then set up. He walked my guy around back and said he wanted the work to be done there also..( it wasn't on the proposal) if they will allow me to post it, I will.. My guy phoned me & was pulled off the job. Materials were left on site. I thought we could work something out. At that same time we were working inside his house also..I sent a bill for that work, (he wasnt willing to pay), I deducted it from the exterior deposit, then sent him back the rest. And knew we didn't want to be there any longer.

June 27: I was referred to and called Dave, who said he'd come do an estimate July 1. June 30: Dave told my answering machine he would come June 30 instead. July 1: I called him to ask whether he'd already come, or whether I should keep waiting for him. He said he'd already come and would send me an estimate. July 5: Dave told my answering machine he couldn't do an estimate because he didn't know how many hours the job would take. He specified his hourly rates for carpentry ($65) and labor ($27). I told his answering machine to just start working and keep me informed. July 14: Dave told my home answering machine he wanted my cell phone number, and my signature on some papers before he began work, and that he could e-mail the papers. I told his answering machine that e-mailing would be fine, and gave him my e-address. I also said that my cell phone is just for traveling, and left him my office phone number. When I got to my office, I found that Dave had told my office answering machine that he wanted to bring me the papers to sign. I called him back. He answered his phone. I proposed we meet at my house at 9:30 AM July 15. He replied, "I'm going to pass on the job," because I'd taken 2 1/2 hours to call him back; his limit is 45 minutes. He had never mentioned his 45-minute callback rule for customers before. He said when he's working on a house, he wants to be able to talk with the homeowner right away. If he were willing to commit to do the work on an agreed-on date and time, I would commit to be home then, or to answer my office phone then. But I can't and won't be immediately available every daylight minute for weeks at a time just in case someone in the home repair business might want to talk with me. Later July 14, another man called me. He said that he is the person to whom Dave would have contracted the work. He said Dave had been burned by someone who didn't pay him, and that made Dave wary "when it doesn't feel right". He claimed to be surprised that my taking 2 1/2 hours to call back was what triggered Dave's reaction. He proposed that I hire him instead of Dave, to "cut out the middleman". I decided not to work with him either. I asked the people who will replace my gutters to refer me to someone whose expectations of customers are more realistic. They gave me another name, and I called that name July 15.

Good work; uses subs but is careful with screening the people he uses. Timing can be an issue, as with any good contractor, you need to plan in advance and be patient, plus my projects were relatively small. Dave and his subcontractor worked with me to work out a date when I could be home.

Another contractor was more professional during the estimating process; Dave's estimate was lower and both had good marks on Angie's. The workman arrived on time and completed the small project quickly and with a minimum of fuss. We received a discount because the work was completed in one day. The workmanship was high quality; the wood used had no knots or blemishes. Although it was only a small project Dave returned phone calls promptly and seemed genuinely concerned that it went well.

.Dave was very responsive and set up an appointment to come look at the work we needed to have done. The new bookcase/entertainment center was enlarged to accommodate newer flat screen televisions. Dave drew up what we wanted, checked all decisions with us and got Seth scheduled to do the work in our home within 6 to 8 weeks of first meeting with hime. Seth, the finish carpenter who works for Dave, did an outstanding job. He is very neat and the craftsmanship is excellent. I would definitely hire Dave's Carpentry again for the next job we have.

Working with Dave's Carpentry was definitely a learning experience. I was on a tight time schedule for this project, and it was in Columbus which is not my city of residence. I searched for carpenters on Angie's List and called 3. Dave's Carpentry was one that responded and gave me a ballpark price to do the job. He said he would bill me for time and materials as the project progressed on a weekly basis. This seemed reasonable to me. I wanted to register the project with Columbus' permit office. Dave drew up a stick drawing for the permit process, but neglected to include that one of the walls being moved was load bearing. I did not catch this omission. Dave had one rate for himself as carpenter and another, much lower rate, for laborers. His labor guys showed up and did a great job on the demolition part of the job. Dave communicated with them mostly by phone, showing up infrequently. Week #1's bill was for $2500+ which included a lot of carpenter's hours. When I questioned this Dave said that one of the demolition guys was also a carpenter. The need to keep the project moving at a quick pace kept me from disputing the charge, which in hindsight was an error on my part. The 2nd week's bill was $1300+ and again had quite a few carpenter hours. By this point, the job had failed the first inspection from City of Columbus. Dave did go to the permit office and amended the drawing to include the load bearing wall removal. The personnel at the office were helpful in pointing out what was needed as a header and the need to transfer the load to the foundation. I don't think Dave or his "carpenter" understood what was needed to pass inspection. A couple of days before the 2nd inspection was scheduled to occur, Dave texted me and said he was quitting my job because of non-payment. This was related to a $50 charge that he had included on the 2nd week's bill for driving back to my house to hang up the permit that he had removed to go to the permit office for the amended drawing. When I was surprised he was charging me to return something that should have never left the property to begin with, he said all right, drop the $50 from the bill. Then came the text regarding my non-payment and that he was quitting the job. I was able to get a much more able carpenter to fix the problems left by Dave's Carpentry which cost an additional $1500+. The lesson learned through this experience was an expensive one.

On April 23rd I called Dave to try and schedule him to come out and give me a quote on replacing some exterior wood around some windows that is rotting. He came out on May 1st and gave me a verbal quote of 575.00. I called him Monday May4th and asked if the work could be done for 500.00 and he said he would check and get back to me. By Wednesday May 6th, I still had not heard anything so I texted him and asked what the status was. He said he would have to keep the quote at 575.00. I told him I understood and I wanted to move forward with having him still do the work we discussed. He said he would contact me to schedule something. Today is May 18th and I still have not heard from him. When we spoke he was very friendly, but seemed unorganized.

I except everything [Member name removed] says on his dispute and Im sorry we didnt get there fast enough for him. I explained to him that we were about 3 working weeks out on our first appointment. [Member name removed] delayed that more, once he ask me about the pricing for the job. Once he settled on my price, other jobs came through and he was put out even further. I explained that we were out about 3 week out yet again.. From his own write-up it is only been about 1 week and 1/2 (still 2 jobs in front of his).. I said I would phone once we were getting closer. We always try to hit our dates of arrivals. [Member name removed] may have been confused about our first appointment, when we first spoke.

Very well! When carpenter set up his tools & equipment his stuff was organized & large equipment was set up outside in neat, unobtrusive manner. Trim work is clean, not sloppy & congruent with existing doorway trim moldings & baseboards. He custom cut trim to install decorative blocks & quarter rounds, and pieces in place rather than nailing which looks smooth & clean. I am pleased with the quality of the work! Plus the carpenter was friendly and courteous.
Description of Work: Modified doorway trim molding near floor to cover gap that occurred years ago when wood floor was installed by someone else -- the floor panels had not been trimmed properly to fit tight around base of doorway. The carpenter worked very effectively and cleaned up the ares where modifications were done. I am very pleased with the work done & plan to have further trim work done by this finish carpenter around the fireplace too!

Dave and his crew (Eric and Justin) have been fantastic throughout our massive remodeling project. We started by removing a load bearing wall and installing laminated beam to support a 16' span. This was followed by installation of new solid core doors (which we provided) throughout the house. The other major scope of work was the framing of new rooms in a walk out level (that had formerly been a garage) - new bedroom, bathroom, office, mudroom, laundry. We would be happy to have Dave, Eric, and Justin work in our house again anytime.

I am super pleased with the work, and the carpenter that was hear was very professional, cleaned up after himself, explained what he was doing, and all the projects turned out looking incredible. I have used several service providers off of Angie's list, and this was the best quality I have ever received in terms of how things look after they were repaired. My only issue was with the cost. I tried to get Dave to give me a labor cost at time of the estimate and he told me he did not do it that way he based it off of the jobs I was having him do. I provided the materials for the stairwell and the quarter round, and he told me most of the cost was labor that the two board for the deck and the lament for the cabinet were pretty inexpensive. Maybe $100. So that to me meant the other 1400 was for labor. The inside carpenter spent 7 hours on the jobs he performed. I was told the outside job was a 3 or so hour job, though I was not here when that was repaired. That means 10 hours which works out to $140/hr. I think that is extremely high. The electrician I had out a month ago charged $63.hour. I was expecting in that range. Due to the excellent quality I would definitely hire again, but I would demand up from to know the labor costs and have a better break out on the estimate. It is partly my fault for believing the jobs would take a full 2 days and not being more insistent on getting an actual quote for the labor. I feel like I probably over paid by about 400 or 500...that would still be $90/hr.

Prompt, reliable, professional. Good attention to detail, didn't have to go back and ask for corrections. There were a number of nails in the yard after first day of work so I contacted Dave because I was concerned about kids getting a nail in their foot when playing in the yard barefoot. He brought out magnet roller the next day and cleaned them up. My only regret is that they don't stain or paint, would be nice to have one-stop-shopping for projects but I understand it's better to stick to one profession and do it very well. I'd utilize their services again without hesitation.

Dave looked like a gentleman, came down to my place, explained to me the nature of our problem and gave an estimate 2 days later. We agreed to move forward with it with a subsequent follow up. Unfortunately he backed out before even taking up the job saying he got preoccupied with other work but never even notified me. Awaiting his call I ended up losing a weeks time.
