We had just purchased the house in May 2004 but would not be moving in until August. We needed the shelves for our professional library to be built and installed on most of the walls before then. We solicited and received several estimates that were far too costly or would not meet our time requirements. We walked through and measured walls with someone who had been recommended to us as a cabinetmaker. After a week, he declined to give us an estimate, because the job was too large for him to do alone. However, he had previously worked for Customworks and recommended them. They normally serve commercial clients, not residential, but they happened to have an open schedule for that July. We were in a bind, because we would not be traveling back to Columbus until the previous owners moved out and we took possession, only one month before the actual move. After several long-distance telephone calls, we arranged for John Fotis of Customworks to walk through the house with the cabinetmaker and review his measurements with our faxed instructions. It was a tricky job due to building around windows and over floor vents in a 1915 house and installing onto uneven plaster walls. We also wanted estimates with several options for enclosed vs. open shelving and possible installation in an attic with slanted walls. John submitted an estimate within 4 days of the walk-through, responded promptly to our questions by phone and e-mail, and recalculated the estimate to give us some lower-cost options. Fotis and his crew designed and built 34 enclosed bookcases of various sizes and shapes at the Customworks shop during July 2004 and installed them on the walls in time for our move-in date in early August. They used one of the oak closet doors to make sure the stain matched the rest of the woodwork in the house. He was extremely courteous, helpful and professional. At our request, his foreman designed and installed a matching brace to support the curved oak master staircase railing, which was loose and unsafe. We were very satisfied with the quality of the workmanship and the whole experience and would not hesitate to recommend to others. Visitors are amazed at the beautiful bookshelves and think they must have been original to the house!
