Tony returned our call promptly, explained his process for estimating and set up an appointment time for the following week. During the initial call, we explained the size of our deck plan which was pretty large (two 18 x18 structures on two levels). We sent him a sketch of our deck plans as well. He came to the appointment a little early which was great. He brought three large books full of pictures of previous work and during the meeting told us several times "I don't do that any longer" because he is now a one man crew. He left our appointment indicating he would give us a price for our deck within a week. The next morning, just a few hours after our appointment Tony called to say that he didn't feel he could do the project because it was too large for him. Whereas we appreciate his honesty, we provided him plenty of information to know the scope of the project prior to the scheduling of our appointment. He seems like a nice guy, but we would have appreciated more honesty about the limitations of his capabilities up front.

Tony is an extremely professional craftsman, and takes pride in his workmanship. Before he began, Tony showed us pictures of other decks he had built to help us decide what we wanted. After some conversation, he left and came back a week later with some conceptual drawings (drawn to scale) for us to choose from. The decision process was easy being able to see what each style would look like, and we customized our choice with built in planter boxes and a pergola. Having had several other quotations from other companies, I was impressed at Tony's knowledge of the permit requirements and the local building codes (which no other company had mentioned. His prices were comparable or less than his competitors. He took care of all of the paperwork (building permit, inspections, etc.) and informed us by phone at every step of the way regarding his progress, results of building inspections, when to expect him, etc. He worked extremely hard, even on some days when (due to weather in February) I didn't think that I should expect him. Only the very coldest or wettest weather slowed his progress. The entire job, removal of the old deck, digging holes, and pouring concrete, and constructing the new deck was done in a few weeks, at a time of year when he was held hostage by winter weather. After he completed his work he cleaned up all the debris from the project and left our yard the way he had found it (except of course, for our gorgeous new deck!). My husband is an engineer and was extremely impressed with the sturdiness of the construction, as the deck went up. This guy does not skimp on materials! This has been an extremely positive experience, and we are looking forward to many years of enjoyment from our new deck. We are thrilled with our new deck!
Description of Work: Removed old wooden deck from the back of our house and built a new 26 foot wide by 14 foot deep wooden deck complete with three custom built-in planter boxes, a pergola, and two sets of stairs down to the back yard. The deck has solid skirting around the perimeter from the floor down to the ground.

Tony is simply amazing. He is everything a contractor should be: responsive, thoughtful, creative, considerate and talented. He takes a great deal of pride in his work, which means he doesn't rush through the job but instead takes enough time to make sure everything is perfect. We LOVE our new deck. It is even better than we imagined it could be. There are so many details - like how Tony routed every board around the top of the railings. Our deck is a functional piece of art. The entire experience of working with Tony is great. He first comes out and looks at the space and talks with you about what you are looking for. Then, he goes home and draws up nearly a dozen sketches of design ideas. He meets with you again to go over those designs (including prices) and if you pick one, you can sign the contract right then, or if you have a few tweaks you need, he happily accommodates the request and draws up a brand new sketch. He's not happy until you are happy. Tony takes care of all of the approvals and inspections, from your neighborhood association to the building inspections. There are no worries at all. Once the work gets started, there's nothing to do but excitedly watch the construction. Nearly all of the work is completed by Tony. He does have a helper to help dig holes and help move the wood and such to your backyard. But the deck is really built by Tony. The work took about 2 1/2 weeks and would have probably been less, but we had a few rainy days in there. I really can't say enough about Tony. This review may seem too good to be true, but please trust me when I say he really is this good.

I couldn't be more pleased with our new deck. Tony was timely and thorough. He built us a sturdy, beautiful deck that I'm sure will last 30 years. The inspector said that you could drive a tank on that sucker! Quality work and a reasonable price. My strongest reccomendation.

Tony P. arrived on time to quote our deck upgrade project. (The only one who was on time.) After being awarded the project he described the work process to us for every step of the way & gave us an update at the end of each day. We will admit he is an early starter but with the warmer days we were experiencing we didn't mind it. Now that the deck is completed we are enjoying it more & are looking for new patio furniture for the larger deck area we have.

His cleanup was perfection. The work was just beautiful. He showed samples of all the types of wood offered in the estimate. Everything was just perfect and he is a perfectionist. I was disappointed to not be able to receive an estimate due to the material of my existing deck is vinyl composite, and this company only uses wood materials. I did see on the website that they used wood, but it didn't state they did not use composite as some other sites clearly stated. I sent an email requesting a quote on 6/5/12 with details of what I was looking to have done and stated that I have composite decking. I did not get a reply, so I called on 6/11/12 and left a message. My call was returned on 6/12/12 and an appointment was set up for 6/19/12. Tony was punctual and did make the appointment on time, but as soon as he saw it was vinyl composite material he said he wouldn't do the work. I'm ok with that answer, but I was kind of offended at how he berated my existing deck, and said it was not good work, wasn't built to code and I should think about getting my money back from whoever built this deck. I explained to him I understand that the material has some sun fade, but that would be true with wood material also. I chose composite material because it requires less maintenance. I was pleased with the original work which was done 5yrs ago, and had no problem with the faded color, the deck just needs to be washed for the season. Overall he made me feel like I wasted his time. To keep it professional he should've just stated he couldn't do the work, and kept his opinions about the material & workmanship to himself.
Description of Work: No services were performed, just a scheduled appointment for an estimate.

We moved into our brand new house in October 2010 and we wanted to have a deck put on. We considered waiting until spring, however we decided to go ahead and get quotes anyway so that we would have an idea of what the deck would cost. After searching Angie's List, we called a few different contractors, and most of them advised us to wait until spring. Tony, however came out, gave us a great presentation and stated that he had a few jobs ahead of us if we decided to go with him. Needless to say, we were impressed. He was professional, courteous, and explained everything he does when he constructs a deck. With all of that, we decided to choose Tony to build our deck. Tony came out and took measurements and three days later we had drawings for 3 different designs and Tony stated if we wanted more ideas, he could draw up more. We chose one of the designs that he originally gave us because it was nearly an exact match to what we had in mind. So, with all that, Tony told us that it would probably be December before he could begin work due to current jobs in process (just like he stated during the presentation). Sure enough, Tony started work in the first few days of December as promised. During the construction process, Tony kept us informed of when he would not be there due to weather and was prompt when the weather allowed. Due to it being a snowy December, this was no easy task. Tony also did nearly all the work himself. You could see by the way he worked that he takes pride in the work that he does. Only during the initial framing process did Tony have one helper. The rest was done solely by Tony. Also, each day when when Tony left for the day, he did a thorough job of clean up. This was no easy task as there was a great deal of mud, snow, and slush on the ground. Lastly, my 3 year-old daughter would go to the deck door and watch Tony work and he would always stop and take the time to say hi or wave. This kind of personal touch was great and my daughter still to this day talks about Tony building the deck from time to time. All in all, our deck is fantastic and we enjoy it nearly every day! Thanks Tony!

All in all, we felt that we got good work and materials for the money. Tony listened patiently to our specific goals and was helpful in describing exactly what materials he intended to use. They ran a couple of days behind on the schedule but seemed determined to make it up to us with some solid, long work days with solid results. We found Mr. Puckett to be an honorable gent and we were quite satisfied. He's on our recommended list.

The experience was positive start to finish. Tony Puckett was a pleasure to work with, he listened to what we wanted and helped put together several designs to choose from within our budget. He took care of all required permits and inspections and he gave us an accurate estimate of when he would start and finish the job. Once he began working I felt that we were his primary focus until the job was complete. There were no surprises at all and the final cost was exactly as quoted. The deck has been completed for a week or so and we are thoroughly enjoying it. It looks even better than I had envisioned it and it seems like it is a very solid build that will hold up well for many years. Tony was polite and professional throughout the process from start to finish and I would not hesitate to recommend him to anyone in the market for a deck.

I almost felt like I was asking him to do me a favor and do the job for free, I was so put off by the bid refusal. That's his perogative to not bid on a job, of course. Nice guy, and I wish him luck and hope he stays busy. But as for me, I took my business elsewhere.
Description of Work: Showed up to assess the repair/replace of a deck. Tony said he was concerned with the size of the job (second story deck, 2/3rds needed to be replaced) and asked me what I was hoping to spend to get what I wanted. I NEVER answer this question. I gave him the range of low/high quotes from other estimates. He said he didn't even want to bid and said he's busy enough to work on quicker jobs. Well, good for him that he's busy enough to turn away $10k worth of business.

Tony was professional from beginning to end. We received an estimate from him for replacing all the deck boards and creating a new pergola for the top of the deck. He immediately had ideas on how to improve our deck and we were impressed from the beginning. He arrived as promised, worked hard all day and cleaned up the space nightly. The end product is beautiful and we are very pleased with the whole experience. When I had questions about the process, etc. Tony was accommodating and friendly. We would recommend him to anyone.

Tony was quite professional during the estimating process. He displayed, through discussion and a review of his detailed briefing materials, good expertise with our type of project. The only problem was that Tony builds his decks with pressure-treated wood, a material that, after all the estimates were in, we decided not to use for our deck. Although we did not employ Custom Deck & Porch for this project, we can recommend the firm to other members.
Description of Work: We obtained four estimates for the replacement of a deck and a balcony (both are one story above ground level). Tony arrived on time, performed his inspections of the deck and balcony, discussed the possible solutions, and gave his recommendations about design, decking materials, etc. Two days after his visit, he telephoned to provide his estimate. Of the four estimates we received, Custom Deck & Porch's was the lowest. However; since we had decided to use a different decking material, we went with another firm.

The experience was good on the initial build of the deck. Tony listened to what I wanted in my deck and came back with multiple drawings as ideas for the deck. We tweaked them to come up with the final design. He pulled all the required permits and started the job as indicated. They showed up as expected every morning and did a beautiful job. They have some unique touches that definitely give the deck a custom look. Approximately 3 to 4 weeks after my deck was completed, I called Tony, because some of the boards had twisted and needed replaced, had large cracks and needed putty, or had cracked all the way through and needed replaced. Also the wood putty over the nails was popping and needed re-sanding. This can happen with wood, and Tony offers a lifetime ownership guarantee. He came out timely. I showed him the issues and he agreed to fix them. He returned a week later to do the repairs. He replaced some of the boards addressed, sanded, but decided not to replace the handrail that had cracked in half. When I addressed this, he became extremely rude and patronizing. They sanded so much that they ruined some of the custom routering that makes the deck unique and beautiful. I addressed this. He again was rude in his response, but finally agreed to return to correct the issue, as he did not have the proper tools to do this. Tony returned a week later with a router and to complete sanding from the repairs the week before. The routering was done poorly. I will attach a picture of this if this report allows. Putty repairs were still not sanded and he again stated that he did not have the proper tools to complete the job and would return the following week. Tony returned the following week. He told me that the routering could not be done properly, so I told him to replace the board. This was one he refused to replace on the first visit. He again spoke to me in a rude and patronizing manner, left much of the sanding incomplete, did not do anything with the board, and left stating that he would return. I have not heard from him again. When building the deck, Tony credited his key employee for all the fine detail work and stated that he would not have been able to do it without him. That was evident in the return visits for repairs, as that employee was not there and no longer works there, and Tony's attention to detail appears to be minimal at best. I have since had someone else come out and complete the repairs and the deck looks beautiful.

Tony was at the site with crew members at approximately 7:30AM each day and communicated continually during the process. We were encouraged to make decisions about benches and steps during the process so we could see how these would integrate with the work in process. This relieved the stress to make a final decision too early in the construction. Tony continually supplied ideas for us to consider based on his vast experience building decks but placed no pressure on us to make decisions too quickly. When we weren't home he contacted us by phone with completed items and plans for the next day. He took good care of our property and cleaned everything up after the job was done. We were also very impressed by the quality of his equipment. They even scrubbed down the deck to remove any soil and dirt. We believe there is a distinct advantage to having the designer, estimator, builder on site every day to run the project. Another nice touch was that during our communication sessions each day Tony thanked us for the opportunity to do the work.
Description of Work: Custom Deck & Porch (Tony Puckett and crew) designed, estimated and built a large (21'x23') custom deck with railings, benches and two sets of custom steps. It was constructed from #1 grade pressure treated pine hand selected and transported by Tony and crew. Screw holes in railings were filled with wood filler and sanded smooth. Prior to this construction Tony and crew removed and disposed of our old rotted cedar deck. They also spread approximately six tons of gravel, moved much dirt and dug nineteen deck support holes. The entire job was finished in a week and a half at the agreed upon estimated price.

Tony Puckett, Custom Deck & Porch, did an outstanding job from beginning to end. He was accommodating in setting up a time for reviewing the work and making an estimate. Work began when Tony said it would and was completed in a reasonable amount of time. My wife and I were impressed with the quality of Tony's work, his honesty and the way he communicated on the progress of the project. He thought through requests and was creative in proposing solutions.

When we called Tony for an estimate, he arrived early with photographs of some of his work. He spent a great deal of time with us describing his methods, answering questions, and finding out exactly what we wanted. Most impressive, Tony always called to tell us of his progress on the job, he always appeared when he said he would, and could not have been easier to work with. His professionalism was amazing, as was the deck. It is incredibly sturdy, well made and beautiful. We want to make a patio under it, so he used extra heavy beams so there would be no supports in the middle. He made a fantastic three shelf unit to hide an area where he had to remove the siding. The landing is extra large to balance the dimensions of the deck, the stairs are very wide, and we love having steps on three sides coming off the landing to the lawn. Tony was most accomodating, polite and always aimed (and succeeded) to please. He even helped us move in a picnic table we bought into the yard. When we wanted to keep a large concrete slab, (he was going to break it up) he moved it to exactly where we wanted it. This was one of the best experiences we ever had with having work done at our home and there were no hassles at all. We love the deck. We paid Tony more than the original estimate because he put a lot of extra time and money into building the shelf and upper landing.
Description of Work: Tony built an elevated pressure treated lumber deck, size 14 x 14 feet with 4 feet wide stairs going down to a 4 x 4 foot landing about a foot above the ground. Steps go down to the lawn on three sides of the landing. He also moved a huge concrete square that had been the former ground level landing and matched it up with a cement slab outside the back door. He also tore down the old deck and built a large three shelf unit to cover the area where some siding had to be removed when the old deck was dismantled.

We were considering redoing our rear deck because it wasn't constructed well when it was first build (i.e., it's not made of pressure treated lumber, the boards are warping & won't hold a stain, etc.). Tony arrived at our scheduled appointment and reviewed the job. He showed us a photo book with examples of decks & porches he's done and they looked great (and very much like what we were looking for). He seemed very knowledgeable about the work, building codes and materials. We were wondering whether or not to use real wood, one of the new composite materials for decks or some combination of the two and he was, again, very helpful. It looks like we may have to wait to do the work now, but will definitely consider him in the future.

Before, during and after the job was completed, Tony sincerely thanked us many times for our business and we're so happy to have had his service.
Description of Work: We called many patio and deck builders for estimates, before calling Custom Deck & Porch. The other companies didn't bother to call back, show up for estimates on time (if at all) or seem to want our business because the project was on a smaller scale. The day we met with Tony from Custom Deck & Porch, he was at our house right on time, prepared and professional. Tony listened carefully to our ideas for a small deck and was very confident that he could incorporate our wishes for privacy walls and a 3' x 4' landing with railing, at the bottom of the steps. He did NOT try to up-sell us on something larger we couldn't afford and didn't want. Tony's humble & respectful attitude, along with photos he brought of past projects, confirmed to us that he was experienced and took much pride in his work. We knew he was the guy for our job. Before beginning our deck, Tony handled all the permits and during the job, handled all inspections. After removing our old steps from the back door, he was very considerate in making temporary steps for our dogs to use, while he was working on the new deck. We have 4 dogs, so this was a lifesaver! During the job, Tony had some necessary tools and supplies that were kept in our yard, which he kept neatly organized. Every evening during the job, Tony called us to let us know his plans for the next day. We were always blown away by his hard work and progress everyday. Tony has an eye for detail and we especially like how he laid the floor boards at an angle, and we're extremely pleased with how the landing at the bottom of the steps turned out.
