The Calhoun Plumbing Company went out of their way to make sure that our needs were met. We called them on a Saturday of a holiday weekend and they came out a few hours later. When we needed to call the city to have something serviced on the exterior of our property, they offered to come back later that same evening to perform another service for us (without charging us the normal "overtime" rates for after seven p.m.). We would definitely recommend them to others and would hire again for any other plumbing need.

I woke up on New Year's Eve and after taking a shower, found sewer water in my basement coming from the floor drain. Called Calhoun Plumbing straight away. Being the day before the holiday, they were already quite busy and quoted me arrival between 5-7p that evening, but if they received any cancellations, they would give me a call. To my happy surprise, they were able to come out at 3:30p. Found tree roots had invaded my sewer line in older clay tile sections (house built in 1940). They were able to snake the line and clear it up. Total time at the house was about 1.5 hours. The money was well spent, they were able to send a camera down to confirm the integrity of the line which looks in good shape (peace of mind to know in a 72 year old home!!). Calhoun's team of Mickey & Pat made short order of the repair, and cleaned up the work area after they finished. I remain a very pleased Calhoun customer and recommend them to anyone with plumbing needs!

1) Calhoun replaced the plumbing on the bath tub but forgot to tighten the fitting on the bath tub overflow. When my tenant took a bath a few days later, it started pouring out from the second floor into the kithen. 2) Calhoun ran a snake from the street up to the apartment building, but did not clear the mud that filled the underground downspouts. They simply said that the pipe was too narrow and just left it like that. They also gave me a $1600 estimate to replace 80 feet of underground downspout saying it wasn't working properly and was full of roots. The next day it rained and I discovered that it was working just fine. 3) Floor drain replaced correctly.
Description of Work: 1) Replaced plumbing from bath tub that had holes in it and was leaking downstairs 2) Cleaned underground downspouts to the street 3) Replaced basement floor drain that was plugged

They were just fantastic! They let me establish an account with them because my charges kept going up and up with them. John, Tommy and Ryan performed service for us. These guys were fantastic! After calling for several estimates, Calhoun was the only company to tell us that the City of Columbus was responsible to make the street water-box workable (and on their dime). We called, and the City found indeed our street shut-off was frozen "open". After installing a new street shut-off, Calhoun was able to complete major repairs for us. I am very pleased with the new main shut-off, the new water heater install, our new faucet in the tub/shower and our shut-off for the outside spigot. I noticed a tiny leak on the tub faucet. Called Calhoun back and they were immediately out the following day to repair with no questions asked and stood by their warranty. We are considering using them again for a renewed water service (replacing old galvanized line). Hard workers, honest and professional folks.
Description of Work: Our main water shut-off valve was leaking & needed repair. Through the process our water heater died, a faucet needed replaced and an outside spigot shut-off valve needed replaced.

The person that took the phone call was very patient while my husband explained in detail what he would like done. He answered questions made recommendations and set up an appointment. Tommy and Ryan showed up at the house at the exact time. Put covers on their shoes to keep the walkway clean. Put plastic tarp down to keep floors dry while removing the old water heater. We are extremely pleased with the work the water heater and the politeness and professionalism we received from Tommy and Ryan. We have more work to be done and will be calling on Calhoun plumbing to do the job.
Description of Work: Supplied and installed a 40 gallon water heater. The service tech had a very small space to work in and did a wonderful job. Replaced old flex pipe with copper and lined it up correctly with the gas connection.

There were problems with Calhoun's work from the onset. The first mistake was when they plumbed hot water to the toilet - we noticed that right away. We provided all of the plumbing fixtures prior to the work commencing - the finish and rough-in fixtures were on-site prior to the work commencing and throughout the work over many weeks and months. Calhoun did not install the rough-ins for three shower jets and this was not known until after the wall cavities were closed up and the finish tile was installed. The only way to repair the problem was to tear out months of work - two walls at a cost of over $15,000. In order to fix the problem we had to install three shower jets that consume 1.2 gallons per minute more than what we specified. That additional 1.2 gallons per minute over 10 years is over $7,500 in additional cost to us - all because Calhoun didn't install the rough-ins that were provided to them before they even started the work. In other words, they just didn't pay attention to the materials that were on the job and made assumptions about what needed to be in the walls without even LOOKING. In addition, they plumbed the two shower diverters incorrectly. The manufacturer's instructions were very explicit in requiring the water supply to be connected on the left side of the diverter - but Calhoun didn't READ the manufacturer's instructions - they plumbed the water supply on the right side instead of the left as required by the manufacturer. Again, all of these fixtures were on-site and provided before the work started - all they had to do was read the instructions before they installed them. Instead, they just guessed and made assumptions about the way they thought it worked. We did not learn this until we turned on the showers and THEY DID NOT WORK! Calhoun came to our house to say that the finish fixtures were not installed correctly and that they could make their plumbing rough in work - but after two hours+ of trying they gave up. To fix the problem we had to buy a 6-position diverter that routed the water differently. They cost an additional $186 to us. After Calhoun agreed that the 6 position diverters would be needed to fix their mistakes, they agreed to provide a hot water heater as compensation for their mistakes. They filed an amended plumbing permit and dropped of the new hot water heater - but after their installer came to the house, they reneged on their offer. When they came to pick up their hot water heater I asked them to sign a simple release of liability in case they got hurt removing the hot water heater or damaged my house. They refused to sign the release of liability and instead called the police! Needless to say, we felt pretty threatened by the business conduct of this company. Calhoun ended up getting sued by my general contractor - and ended up settling the case out of court. They reimbursed my general contractor for the 6 position diverter and paid the additional costs to submit a new plumbing permit. From our point of view, they did this to avoid going to court where it is pretty clear they would have lost. The only problem at this point is that we are damaged ever time we use the shower because it is consuming 1.2 gpm more than what was provided and specified. We want a refund of the $1,812.79 we paid as the actual damages to us due to their negligence will be considerably more.
Description of Work: Calhoun Plumbing was hired to complete the rough-in for a major master bathroom remodel. The remodel was a complete replacement of the existing MBR down to the studs. The new MBR included a large shower with his and her's showers. One shower included an overhead shower and three body jets and the other shower included an overhead shower and handheld shower. The MBR model included rough-ins for the two showers, pedestal sink and toilet.

Response from Calhoun Plumbing Co
Calhoun Plumbing is one of the premier plumbing companies in Columbus Ohio. We hold an A rating with Angie’s list and also hold an A- rating with the better business bureau. Calhoun Plumbing offers quality materials and great service for a reasonable rate. Calhoun Plumbing cares about our community’s sanitation and the health of Columbus Ohio. In the member's rating of Calhoun Plumbing he never mentioned his general contractor Bill Shepard until the end of his complaint. We find that extremely strange! Mr. Shepard used a home owner’s permit and the member never performed any work. Calhoun plumbing refused to perform work in this method and pulled a plumbing permit for this job. The general contractor tried to keep us in the dark about this fact until we had to pull the permit and he had given us a home owner’s permit registration number. We felt just like in the first step of this remodel we didn’t know the whole story and we were kept in the dark until the end. The member failed to mention that his general contractor, Bill Shepard provided materials and labor for the finish plumbing to save money. Experience has taught us this method never saves money and only adds confusion. He stated that Calhoun plumbing installed the shower valve incorrectly. The member's lack of knowledge on this subject is troublesome and very misleading. Actually the shower valve was never installed incorrectly. The cartridge decides weather the valve will serve as three or six functions. The problem which the member neglected to mention was the wall restrictions and 2x4 stud layout inhibited exact direction specific installation on the shower valve that had multiple installation methods. A valve body for the body spray insert was required for the body spray installation and plastic guide cover for the tile installer. So during installation not to cover the body spray connection and allow the body spray to go in the wall properly. The tile contractor was the general contractor for the job and did not request the plastic guard to be installed during the tile installation nor did he say anything about the plastic guard not being used at the time of rough plumbing. If the general contractor had the plastic guard and body spray valve and purchased them seems odd the general contractor did not require us to install them. Knowing he needed them at the time of the rough plumbing and tile installation. All that was needed was a 3 inch hole drilled in the tile at each body spray to resolve this issue. The general contractor did not attempt a resolution for this issue just blamed Calhoun Plumbing. Further more the exact thickness of the backer board and tile where never disclosed during installation for exact measurements required for the body spray valve. This needed to be known during the rough installation. The directions for this process where still on site for the general contractor to use during his tile and finish plumbing installation. Calhoun Plumbing tried to make the member happy due to the delay of his bathroom being completed with the shower cartridge and body spray issues. Calhoun Plumbing tried to find middle ground for the member's concerns by providing a water heater free of charge. The day of water heater installation he stated he wanted reimbursement for the shower cartridge and to not make his finial payment due upon completion of the finish plumbing inspection. Calhoun Plumbing reclaimed the water heater from the member's property with the help of the police department. So he would not be charged with theft. Due to the last minute changes he made, this was our only option. Most of the issues involved the general contractors poor planning with providing materials and request to provide labor for this job. The general contractor was not experienced enough in this type of remodel and detailed plumbing to manage this job. Calhoun Plumbing had already spent a great deal of time and resources on the member's project and attempted to resolve the issues he had with his investment. The member assumed Calhoun Plumbing would lose a court hearing result. We were very surprised with the member's thinking, it might border on pompous but we think everyone knows about “THE WORD ASSUMED.” Calhoun Plumbing lost many hours of unpaid labor and when consulting our attorney it seemed far better to get this situation behind us rather than pay large attorneys fees. The desired result was exactly what Calhoun Plumbing requested, the ability to move forward and not take one more cent of loss on a poorly planed and managed project by the member and his general contractor Bill Shepard.

I’ve used them a number of times. I think they charged me $170 on their services I guess. It has absolutely been positive working with them. They’re always very responsive. I’ve had emergency situations where they’ve come out on Saturdays within a couple of hours and the prices were still very reasonable. I’ve used them a number of times and I’ve been really happy with them. They are obviously on time and friendly. In addition to that, I think their prices are very fair and they do a good job. I will absolutely use their services again in the future.

Contacted Calhoun on Friday evening around 5 p.m. after another contractor didn't show up for the appointment. I spoke with Jeremy who gave me a quote for the repair and a service window for the following day (Saturday). Although they had to give me a four-hour window due to other repairs, Jeremy assured me that I would be called at least 30 minutes in advance so I could run errands if I needed to, which I appreciated. On Saturday morning, I received a call from Dave (technician) informing me that another customer had canceled and that he could come out as soon as possible. Since it was brefore my service window and I was not home, Dave and I arranged to meet 45 minutes later. Dave arrived promptly and snaked the drain in less than 45 minutes. (The other contractor had told me that I would need a jet for this repair so I was relieved to have the job done effectively and in a less expensive manner.) The only problem we encountered was getting machine down into the basement since my stairs were built over 60 years ago, but Dave managed to do it without any major issues. I appreciated that Calhoun was able to provide this repair on the weekend with no additional cost. The only drawback was the machine tends to drag the sewer water throughout the house. I have wood floors so it was easy to clean up, but someone with carpeting would definitely want to cover the carpet with plastic. Overall Calhoun provided a pleasant experience and I would use them again.

They came out the same day I called at the time they stated, and snaked the drain as requested, so from that stand point the job was fine. However, they tried to charge me over $200 for a job that was quoted at "between $122.95 and $162.95" when I called and asked before having them come. Those are pretty specific numbers, and if it was going to be over $200 I wouldn't have hired them. When I said that was a lot more than what I was quoted he proceeded to argue with me about how much time they had spent there (making a big show of calculating down to the minute, including the time spent sitting in the driveway arguing with me about it, to get to an hour and 15 minutes... showing me how they have a price list, and how much they charge to remove a toilet, which doesn't have much to do with the fact that the person on the phone quoted me a certain price...) Anyway, I'm happy to pay people an hourly rate for the work they do, but I also want to know ahead of time what to expect. The overall experience was frustrating because I felt he was overcharging me and then was quite rude, which is what I remember most from having them come out in the summer to give a quote on a different job. To be fair, my boss had them out to do a similar job on a Sunday and he was quite happy with their work. I however, will not be calling them again.

I called Calhoun Plumbing last eve because we've hired them before and they've done good work. I was told a tech could arrive Friday morning (today), and we agreed to 10-11a as an arrival time. At 8:45a, Matt came knocking on my door. I turned him away; he obliged and left. I went to work and returned at 9:50a, and Matt was waiting for me again. He watched me enter my house, waited, and then knocked on my door at precisely 10a. I greatly appreciated that. He went right to work, cleaned the drain, asked me to check it to confirm it was as I'd hoped, accepted my $20 Angie's List coupon, and was gone by 10:20a. The $103 I paid for this service seems steep, but another way to look at it is that it was done very quickly and the problem is now solved and done with within just hours after my calling them. So, I didn't like paying $102.95, but I will use Calhoun again.

I had removed a toilet to replace bathroom flooring. The toilet plumbing is 53 years old, and was damaged when the toilet was removed. I called Calhoun (on a Saturday) at about 2:00 PM, they arrived about an hour later. Two men inspected the damage and assured me that I had not done any real damage (even though I think I did). They repaired the damage and replaced the toilet within an hour. They were prompt, and they performed a professional service for a very reasonable price - especially for a Saturday. I was very pleased. To be fair, I attribute some of the promptness to the fact that Calhoun Plumbing is located in the same zip code as the repair location.
