Since 1987, we've specialized in home basement remodeling and refinishing in the greater Columbus, Ohio area. Al Cloern explains the entire remodeling process when working with Basements Unlimited for your new finished basement. Drawings, permits and even building materials are all part of planning a basement living space for you and your family. When we agree on the basement renovation plan, we will give you a start date and a completion date. We believe the job is not finished until the client is completely satisfied. All work is fully guaranteed and the work site is fully insured. We use only quality materials. Construction is done like building a new house: 2 X 4 walls, insulation, vapor barrier, full electrical, dry wall, wood moldings, specialty lights, and glass block windows.
We chose this company because of the thoroughness of their work. The estimate included services such as waterproofing the basement walls. (Other estimates did not.) The estimate was fair and very detailed. The work was completed quickly and all the workers were friendly and approachable. We always knew what was coming next as they kept us well informed. Our basement looks great and we love this room! While the name of this company is basements unlimitied, they do other remodeling work. They will be a first call with whatever project is in the future for us!!
Description of Work: Our basement was unfinished. They finished half the basement into a family/tv/entertainment room and the other half is storage/laundry.

The project went very well. Equipment deliveries were done very carefullly, and all questions were responded to very promptly from start to finish. Al very considerately anticipated our needs and worked well with us to give us the basement we were looking for.
Description of Work: We were looking to remodel our unfinished basement. We wanted a bar/kitchen and open area for entertaining, a kids play area and a workout area. Al came up with several ideas to make this all work for us. He was very descriptive and helpful in the planning stages. The kids play area is wonderful. The wall of the kids area contains a built in shelving unit for storage and display. It is enclosed by pillars that separate it from the main TV viewing area. The workout area is also well separated from the rest of the living space. The bar and bathroom both contain custom cabinetry. Al created a very warm environment in the bar area for entertaining. Al was very considerate throughout the project when we had questions. Roger and the rest of the crew were very reliable and most importantly very knowledgeable

The project went well overall. We liked Al from the start. After meeting with several other companies, we felt that Al's price was reasonable and especially liked the fact that he did not pressure us at all. We were very comfortable having Al and his team (Roger, Mike) in our home when we weren't there. Al always picked up the phone when we called with questions, or called back the same day. He also timely responded to a couple of issues we had after the project was over. For example, the battery back-up for the sump pump kept going off and when we called Al, he came over same day and fixed the problem. Excellent service! We felt that Al truly cared about what we wanted and tried to do what he could to accomodate us.
Description of Work: We had our basement (approximately 900 square feet) finished by owner Al Cloern and his team. Al had good ideas when we were designing the basement and he was flexible when we wanted to make changes to the plan. We wanted to have two main rooms in the basement, yet maintain an "open" feel. To accomplish this, Al built a half-wall between the rooms. He also built shelves into the half-wall. In addition, we had a pantry and several closets added, including one under the basement stairs and a huge walk-in closet. Al put in lots of shelves, as storage was very important to us. He also installed a battery back-up for our sump pump and a booster for our dryer vent duct. Al wanted the basement to be an extension of our home, so he offered to have the wood trim and doors match the rest of the house (dark cherry). While we really liked this, we eventually opted to go with white trim and doors as we wanted the basement to be as bright as possible. Another great thing was that Al added in lots of lighting to keep the basement bright.

Overal, we were very impressed with Al from start to finish. We obtained three different bids and were surpised when his was the most competitive given other Angie's List reports stating he was expensive. Of all the contractors we met with, Al was the most professional and we felt the most comfortable with him. He always responded to my inquiries the same day. Our concerns were quickly addressed. We also greatly appreciated his flexiblity. We had started to finish our basement ourselves, so we already had all of the materials and my husband had completed most of the framing. Al used what we had, and was kind enough to take the remainder back to Lowe's and get a credit for us, which was above and beyond in my opinion. I had no problem letting him or Roger in our home without us being there, too. I would definitely use him again.

First of all...All work done on time, on budget and most importantly quality craftsman work. Just beautiful. Al was always available when I had questions, returned phone calls promptly and it was a wonderful experience working with Al. Additionally, when I was out of town and had a water leak I called him on a Saturday. While this problem was no where near where his team had worked he still came over and investigated and fixed the problem. I would only use Al Cloern, "Basements Unlimited" for any and all work I have in Columbus. A true craftsman that takes pride in his and his teams work. A thoroughly enjoyable experience. Craig Johnson
Description of Work: Basements Unlimited-Al Cloern completely upgraded my 1920's basement as well as upgrading my kitchen so now they are my two favorite rooms in the townhouse. And somewhat off the subject, he rescued me! Previously, I had hired another contractor who simply disappeared with more money from me than work accomplished. And the previous contractor's work was very questionable. Al came in and put together a budget to not only complete the projects, but to also find any problems and correct any errors from the previous contractor's work. After correcting the previous work and removing outdated and not in use wiring, lighting, ducting, plumbing etc in the basement he then modernized and upgraded the basement. The upgrades included dry wall, insulation, ceiling, lighting, flooring to include carpeting and tiles. He also installed shelving, washer/dryer, sink, cabinets and work area for the washing area and also enclosed the stairs to include a second hand rail that is remvoveable when moving large objects up or down into the basement. The basement now has an enclosed storage area, work-out area, play area for children and the basement is a well lit comfortable living and working area. Super job! Al's team then retiled the kitchen and regrouted. He also installed a glass back splash as well as installed a new insullated back door to include painting all trim. He then built a custom storage closet to fit into an older closet area next to the kitchen. Again just an outstanding profession job!

Overall, it went very good. In the first meeting with Basements Unlimited, they put us in touch with an interior designer, who was really instrumental in helping us to select colors, and patterns, and products, and the end result is better than what we originally envisioned. The combination of the project management, the technical folks who actually installed the product, and the interior design assistance, I don't think you can get a better experience than what we had with Basements Unlimited. Basements Unlimited provided a written quote, with specific allowances for the stove, the flooring, counter top, sink, and faucet. We then used these allowances as we were making selections for flooring, and the other items on the list. In some cases we spent more (the flooring we liked was more than the budget), and in some cases the product we selected was less than the budget. In the end, when it was time to settle up, there were no financial surprises. There are always a few things that don't go according to plan with a project of this size. When we ran into a few things that did not make sense (to us), Basements Unlimited addressed the issues to our satisfaction (and beyond our expectation in at least one case). It seemed like the folks in charge at Basements Unlimited, viewed our home, just like their home, and that's something we did not expect, but something that we very much value. Based upon our experience with this project, we've asked Basements Unlimited to quote two more upgrades to our home, one has to do with a hot tub installation, and the other with a basement remodel. We have not done these two new projects yet, but we will within the next year.
Description of Work: We needed a kitchen remodel, the remodel included: New flooring, almost 500 sq feet. Granite counter tops. New kitchen sink and faucet. Modification of existing kitchen window sill to accommodate new kitchen faucet. New stove, and a gas line to the new stove. Back-splash. Under cabinet lighting.

Wow! What a great experience I had with Basements Unlimited and owner Al Cloren. I found Basements Unlimited on Angie's List and called for an estimate -- within a week Al was at my home taking measurements and talking with me to find out what I wanted in the finished product. He told me he would have the basement looking like a continuation from the rest of the house. He was right -- there is an even flow from the first floor to the basement -- just like another room in the house. My basement, or should I now say Family Room, looks fantastic -- the attention to details is amazing -- especially the closet under the steps! Al was very professional, yet very friendly and opened to my suggestions and questions. I was really impressed that I could call Al at almost any time with an issue/question/concern and he would take action immediately. It was amazing how all his workers were just as professional and friendly as Al -- and they all cleaned up their work area at the end of each day. Al has renewed my faith in contractors -- he is honest, trustworthy, professional, knowledgeable, timely and an all-around good guy!

I met with Al on behalf of my boss regarding some light basement remodeling (i.e. paint, one wall drywall or skim, carpet, some shelving and lighting). He was very prompt. When he arrived he was friendly and very thorough. He explained in detail about city codes and requirements to be able to start work. Safety and following code seemed to be of huge importance. He met me at the house a few days later with an estimate and went over it in great detail with me. I was very surprised at the high cost estimate at first, but then he explained in detail why he priced everything the way he did. Instead of just giving the estimate for the light remodel, he figured it as a complete gut, making the price well over $15,000, and subsequently out of my boss's price range. Al's exact words were "If you're looking for a handyman to just cover up bigger problems, I'm probably not your guy". He stressed that if we tried to cut corners we would end up spending 2/3 of the total cost he was quoting, and better to get the job done right and properly the first time. I cannot stress enough how incredible friendly and thorough Al was. VERY professional and seems to take great pride in the work he does. Whether or not my boss will decide to go with Basement Unltd remains to be seen........

Al and Roger did a great job for us. Al was very prompt with our estimate and provided a very detailed description of the work. We were asked for our ideas and additional ideas were presented to us, but not "pushed on us" like they were with a few of the other companies that we had estimates from. We received quotes from 9 other companies. We originally chose another company, but quickly changed our minds when we ran into difficulty with building permits. We had already told Al that we were going with this other company, but it was not an issue for them at all when we contacted them again. They fit us in and were able to finish up our project as scheduled, just in time for us to host Thanksgiving with our new basement! The one thing that we were most impressed with was the fact that this is truly a passion for Al and he clearly takes a lot of pride in his work and company. This was evident as soon as he walked into our home. He took an interest in every detail of how the house was built and he made sure that the basement matched the architecture of the rest of the house. As the project progressed, he made sure that things were done to his satisfaction or they were done over. An example of this was when the ceiling in the center part of our basement was framed, it was hung 4 inches too low. When Al inspected it, he had the framers cut it down and rehang it. Four inches actually made a huge difference in that part of the room. This attention to detail is what we feel separates Basements Unlimited from the other companies that we investigated. We highly recommend this company!
Description of Work: We had 1,000 sq. feet of our basement finished off. This included a pool table room with columns and half walls, a rec. room, half bath, media room and closet with built-in shelves on either side. We also had additional outlets and computer cabling installed, as well as, a deduct water meter.

Response from Basements Unlimited
I did an estimate for these people but didn't preform any work after they had the unfortunate experience of hiring a very poor contractor that didn't know what he was doing and then wouldn't fix the problems that he created. I came out to look over their issues and explained that we only do things 1st class the way they should be done and it was very hard on their type of job to figure out what work that prior contractor finished is acceptable and what isn't without doing a great deal of job over. I made my list of what needed to be fixed and torn out and presented them the estimate. Never heard from them again and this is not a new situation when people have been taken by other contractors, almost always feel the repair bill is high. I would have done the job for what they paid original contractor. The people were very nice and i feel real bad when someone else in the construction trade takes peoples money and doesn't preform the work in a professional manner. It really stresses the importance of using a service like Angie's list. Thanks Al

We had a terrific result. Al thought of things I didn't even know to ask. His sub, Roger, was professional, knowledgeable, and very easy to work with. Any questions or issues we had were handled very quickly. I was very skeptical of anyone and convinced I would have to watch over them every second and was always on the lookout for a scam. Al proved to me that there are honest contractors out there. I couldn't be happier with the entire experience and the result is amazing. I still don't know what to do with all the new space and Al made sure I still have plenty of storage.

They had the low quote and did a great job. They said they would do it in 5 weeks and they did. It cost what they said it would and the timing was what they said it would be. I am happy with it. Everything was as I expected. I would advise anyone to get a quote from them if they want their basement refinished. They will definitely be the low bidder and they do a good job. They do use subs but I thought they did a good job picking out the subs and I was pleased.
Description of Work: I used Basements Unlimited to refinish half the basement, which was about 400 square feet. They did everything including drywall, carpet, lighting, electrical, insulation and studs. They also did woodwork and trim including banisters rails.
Basements Unlimited transformed our dank drafty leaky smelly disgusting basement into a comfortable, attractive living space. The end result exceeded my expectations--it is not simply the spiffed up basement I figured it would be but rather an extension of our house. We are extremely pleased with the work. The price was fair and costs did not escalate. We increased the scope of the job on a few occasions during the course of the project (we decided to put in hardwood floors, for example, and decided to replace the existing staircase with a new one). These additions were always very fairly priced. The end product is worth every penny. Al of Basements Unlimited was a pleasure to work with. He and those he employs were friendly and conscientious. We enjoyed having them around. We were out of town on several occasions during the project and were completely at ease having them in the house. Al is an experienced carpenter and craftsman. The work was extremely high quality in all facets. He is very particular about his work and the work of those he employs. He was very responsive in addressing the few concerns we had over the course of the project. Our experience with Basements Unlimited was the best we've had with a contractor/remodeler. We will use this company again for other remodeling projects. We would highly recommend Basements Unlimited.

Was rather quick with the estimate. Brought folder of reviews of his work mostly printed from this site. Went down measured and asked if we had any questions and was on his way. Didn't seem as personable as other people that came to estimate the job. Also required that he stop back to present the estimate rather than emailing us the quote. Took about a week for his estimate to be ready and we had already chosen another contractor that we were more comfortable with by the time his estimate was ready.

We had a great experience. We got three estimates and theirs was half the price of one more widely known chain that calls themselves an "upscale" remodeler. The owner himself came out to give us the estimate. We were impressed with their references. They started pretty much on-time and moved along with only slight delays due to subcontractors. Even when a financing issue occurred they kept working and gave us the benefit of the doubt. We are delighted with the finished product and price. As things came up they threw in a few extras at no additional charge (like mounting smoke detectors throughout the house and replacing our dryer vent). Al and Roger were great to work with. We paid more than the estimate but it was due to OUR decisions to increase the scope of the project and NOT due to contractor overrun. For example, we decided to get our electrical box upgraded and have them clean out our air ducts.

Did an excellent job for a good price.
Description of Work: Complete remodel of an older condominium.
We got several estimates before starting this big job, but chose Al because he seemed confident and knowledgeable and had impeccable references. I was 7 months pregnant when we started this job, but Al and his crew were so kind to work around my schedule and requirements. Throughout the job, they were so respectful and even changed one type of lacquer used (which made it more time-consuming for them) in order to prevent the fumes from being in our house. Al was great to work with--he often came up with great suggestions for us and every time we had new ideas, he was wonderful in incorporating them into the plans. He came to inspect each aspect of the job as it was completed and even worked late to make sure everything was perfect. We never minded having him around. He is definitely a perfectionist and we trusted him completely. We will most definitely call them again should we ever be in the position to finish another basement! Our basement is the nicest room in our house!
Description of Work: We had our unfinished basement turned into a beautiful recreation room. Al moved the plumbing to provide more room, added drywall to walls and ceilings (after waterproofing), painted, installed full electrical system (including wall outlets, can lights and wall sconces), installed phone outlets and speaker wire, hung doors and installed woodwork on stairs and around windows, painted and finished the room.
