BEWARE - VINYL LINER REPAIR - BEWARE Before you consider calling American Leak Detection for a pool repair, I think it is fair that you know that this company will only guarantee their work for 48-hours. If they leave, and your pool is still losing water, you have 2 days to find out and report it. "What happens if they patch my liner and the patch comes loose on the third day?" Too bad. You just spent $367.00 and have nothing to show for it. "When will they tell me about this policy?" They will tell you after you've paid, not before you've paid. If fact, they won't even tell you in person. It will be in an invoice, that is emailed to you, and in an attached document, in the fine print. "What does this $367 cover?" Not a whole lot. Their tech came over, looked into my pool, and patched a hole near the edge where my deck was, so that he didn't have to get in the water. He said it was a simple fix and that he could probably just charge me for a leak test (which they didn't). He told me that he ran a test, on a day with 20 mph winds and strong gusts, and that my pool was no longer leaking. (I did not get to see these "test" results.) I asked him if he checked for any other leaks - I was told no. I asked if he was going to dive into the pool, and check the perimeter, the seams, the skimmer seal. I was told he was not. He told me he guaranteed his work. He told me to watch it for a few days, make sure that it wasn't leaking, and to give them a call if I had any problems. I immediately marked the water level in the pool, and filled a bucket of water to compare. The water level dropped over half an inch the first day. I marked it again the next day. After a few days, and a couple of days with rain, I checked and I had still lost 3 inches. My bucket had lost 1/4" - I called first thing Monday morning. My pool was still leaking. I was IMMEDIATELY told that they would not do a single thing. They referred me to their policy - 48 hours - and that if the patch doesn't hold they would have to come back out. I was told that they would only come back out for another $367.00 - they will do NOTHING after 48-hours. I however, can GUARANTEE that I will not be calling this company again.

Chuck and Joe did a great job of reinforcing the steps by injecting a filler. They then used epoxy to cover the drill holes and crack. Can hardly notice the steps were worked on the cavity was filled and the steps are now solid. Chuck and Joe we courteous and professional, the also knocked $400 off the original quote as the job did not require as much filler as the thought. Excellent company , would definitely hire again. Great! Their advice on the basement issue truly saved me thousands! I am so grateful. I was able to do the necessary work myself with about $50 worth of products I bought from Menards. I had offers from half a dozen companies for that repair that ranged from $1100 to $5000+. With respect to the efflorescence, they seem to have determined the cause correctly. They only needed an hour to diagnose what was going on with both issues. It was money well spent. He did not try to sell me on any additional services. The gentleman was professional, knew what he was doing and was honest.
Description of Work: Determine the cause of efflorescence on interior walls of the living area and the source of leaking in the basement. Two contractors had attempted to repair the interior walls, but the efflorescence immediately came back.

It didn't. They didn't show up for appointment and never called to let me know they weren't coming. I called and all I got was sorry I don't have anyone to send out now but we can reschedule you for next week. Funny enough I just read the 1st bullet under "Our Pledge" on their website..."Arrive when scheduled". Oops. Inexcusable. Embarrassing customer service.

Response from AMERICAN LEAK DETECTION - COLUMBUS
American Leak Detection apologizes if there was any misunderstanding in the price that was quoted. We quote a flat rate for leak detection work on most residential jobs and this job was quoted for $325 to find a leak on a rental property and the owner was not on site. The technician performed the leak detection as requested and bid a repair to stop the leak and include it in the original detection charge of $325, normally this would be at an additional cost. Upon completion the customer called us and questioned the price. After explaining what was done we agreed to take $200 for both the detection and repair. This amount did not cover our time and materials for the detection and repair but we conceded to make her happy. American Leak Detection strives to maintain good communication and fair pricing with all customers. But without the customer on site sometimes this is made more difficult. We hope [Member Name Removed] will understand this and consider the resolution fair.

Excellent job done on the work. Once the work was ordered, they excavated in the front yard to a depth of four or five feet in order to access the water supply line where it went underneath the building's foundation/footers. The supply line was cut, a small hole in the utility room floor was hammered out to allow access to the pipe, the old line was pulled out from underneath the home and new water supply line was run in its place. Utility room floor was refilled (cement), the new line was attached to the house's plumbing system, and the front yard was filled back in. (I chose to redo my own landscaping to save a few bucks.) The sanitary drain's leak was also located outside the building, excavated, and repaired. Much closer to the surface, and only took about an hour. Steve and all of his team struck me as very professional and trustworthy. Left them alone at my house doing their work for a large portion of their time here.
Description of Work: Located and repaired an underground leak in the primary water supply coming from water main into the house. Leak was very accurately determined without excavation. Turned out to be a 6" split in the pipe underneath the house and roughly two feet back from the footers. Of particular note, as I began calling plumbers (I called a lot of them) and described what I needed done, almost every single one of them immediately told me something along the lines of, "Oh! Yeah. I'll tell you what. These are the guys you need to call. That's a bit beyond what we can do. When we run into these kind of situations, these are the folks we call in to deal with it for us. Not sure how they do it, but they're set up for this kind of stuff, and they have the equipment to do it. They can locate and deal with leaks we just don't have the ability to find like this without tearing down part of your house to locate it." Keep in mind that all of the other plumbing companies' solution was to rip out the interior floor of my house, jack hammer huge swaths of my living room foundation out, temporarily remove one of our bearing walls, and that was just going to be the work required to locate the leak.... Steve West and his team from American Leak Detection found the leak without touching any of the existing structure, and located it to within six inches of its ultimate location. (Keep in mind that it was 4-5 feet underground, beneath my living room floor.)

All of a sudden, my vinyl-lined pool started losing water very rapidly. It had lost 14" in 36 hrs. By the time I got the recommendation from my regular pool repair company to call American Leak Detection, the water level was so low that I could not run my circulating pump to keep the water chlorinated and clear. The person I spoke to on the phone was pleasant and sincere. It was a Tuesday (I noticed the leak on Monday evening) and while she said the next available appointment was the following Monday, she said that someone might be able to come sooner if they got done with another job early. She did not say that I absolutely had to keep the pool clear or else they wouldn't be able to do the work, but I gave an authorization with my credit card to go in whenever they were able and to fix whatever they could. The technician apparently was able to get to my house on Wednesday afternoon. I say apparently because I was not called when they were on their way (as had been promised) so that I could meet them there. And what I heard back from the receptionist after the technician apparently went there was that he "couldn't see a thing" because the water was too murky, but that I was going to need a vinyl liner replacement. This was Wednesday late afternoon, and I was promised a quote by Thursday morning. Thursday afternoon, I got a call asking for my email address to send the quote, and I was also told that they were going to bill me $135 for the service call, but that if I ordered the liner replacement from them I'd get $135 of credit. I was annoyed at being charged $135 for the guy to come by when he had spare time just to take one look and charge me $135 for that. But I was expecting to just have them do the replacement and then get my money back that way. I waited and waited, but never received a quote from American Leak Detection. After the initial "I'll get you a quote by tomorrow morning" I called two other pool companies and they each came over to check it out for FREE and then gave me the estimates by Friday evening. Finally, on Tuesday I decided to just go with one of those other companies. In a nutshell, I've you've got money to burn then you might want to consider American Leak Detection. But they apparently value their own time infinitely more than they value their customer's time, so I wouldn't recommend them. They really should not have charged me for the service call, because they would have had to make the same visit for free to give me an estimate on the liner replacement, they didn't tell me that I needed the pool to be clear (or I would have told them not to come then), and the guy didn't do a darn thing!
Description of Work: Someone from American Leak Detection came to my house and did an "inspection" to say that my pool was too murky to look for a leak.

Response from AMERICAN LEAK DETECTION - COLUMBUS
This member called to state his pool was losing water rapidly and he wanted to locate the leak. We knew the liner was 10 years old and the pool was not full at the time. This discussion was to see if we could locate the large leak and then have the pool filled so we would be able to finish the detection. The member states he did not want to pay $135 for a service call when the technician “didn't do a thing.” Our technician dove the pool to locate the leak, but it was too dirty and visibility was low. We couldn’t figure out how a pool could turn so green in 24 hours. It’s impossible for an algae bloom to occur from Monday to Wednesday. This member never asked us for a free quote to replace the liner, we were hired to locate the leak. Had the pool water been clear, this would have been possible. We initially quoted him our regular pool detection fee of $370, but we ultimately reduced this to $135.

This was a much more difficult project that was anticipated at the start and the lack of arcitectural drawings showing where the pipe ran was a great handicap. Once we were able to determine the general route of the pipe it became easier. The depth of the pipe under the floor was a complicating factor and the unknown presence of copper tubing in the floor above the water pipe rendered some of the instruments almost useless. Even though this turned out to be a difficult project I am very pleased with the overall performance of the company and especially Paul's performance. We did have a fixed price agreement for completing the work and the company would have honored it had we not insisted on finishing the job on overtime. There were two technicians working during the overtime period of about three hours and I think the $350 surcharge is reasonable for that.
Description of Work: Company was called to locate a water leak under a concrete floor inside a church. The initial visit was to locate the leak and to provide an estimate for punching through the floor and repairing the leak. Paul, the technician who made the initial visit spent about 2 hours with equipment to locate the pipe and the point of the leak. There were no architectural drawings available to help with locating the pipe.We agreed to have Paul come back to do the repairs. We had a deadline of one week to locate and repair the leak but after the initial visit thought it should take about a day. The initial location proved not to be the source of the leak and after punching through the floor at the first site he found that the pipe did not go in the direction we had thought it would. Paul spent 4 or 5 more hours trying to locate the leak but was not sufficiently sure of a location to put another hole in the floor. The second day was also spent trying to determine the route for the pipe and locate the leak. A second small hole was put through the floor where he got a indication that his equipment had detected gas he had injected into the pipe was escaping. That turned out to be a false positive too. Chuck, another employee, stopped by during the day and located an isolation valve in a box in the floor on the other side of the building. This was significant because we could use some old architectural drawings to speculate on the path of the pipe. Paul also used highly sensitive listening devices to hear the water escaping from the pipe and was finally found the strongest sound in another room about 5 feet from the original hole in the floor. He punched through the floor at that location and found that there were abandon copper pipes that were part of an abandoned in floor heating system in the bottom of the concrete just above the wire mesh. That explained the difficulty he had with his metal detector device. He dug down a little more than 2 feet and found the leak. He made the repair but when we turned the water on it was immediately evident there was a second leak about 20 inches from the repair. It took about 3 more hours to make the second repair, to fill the three holes in the floor and replace the concrete. He had to work overtime to complete this because we had reached the deadline for getting the leak repaired.

The did a great job! From the initial guy who did the assessment to the crew that did the actual repair, they couldn't have been nicer or more thorough. Although it was a lot of money to have to spend, it had to be repaired. I was very pleased with the job overall. They had to break up part of my driveway to get to the leak and they repaired that very well. I would definitely use them again!
Description of Work: My waterline broke out at the street, and of course the city determined it to be on my side of the shut off valve. American Leak Detection was on the list of "city approved/licensed" companies to work on water lines at the street. They quickly came out and assessed the situation to determine that it was, in fact, a leak at the street. The guy who came out to do the initial assessment was really nice and thorough. It was several more days before we could get a date that worked for both of us to get the job done because of the Thanksgiving holiday. They were in contact with me several times to set up a time that worked for me.

He came out, gave me an estimate, and believe it or not he fixed it. I had been stung by two different people who said they could fix it- they took my money and ran. But this guy came out, researched it, fixed it and I'm thrilled to death about it. He even said he would guarantee this for a year. It's an ingroud stainless steal pool, and no one else knew what to do with it. He did his own research, and he did a great job. I'm so pleased with his work.

I called to see how much it would cost to find the leak in my front yard. I was quoted $295. This price seemed too high to me because it was about a third of what the quote was for the repair. I told them that I thought that was too high and I was trying to figure out how long they would be there to justify that price. I was told that they had ''highly sophisticated equipment'' and that their leak detection was guaranteed. I was then told it could possibly take them anywhere from an hour up to four hours to locate the leak. I wonder how ''sophisticated'' the equipment is if it could take up to 4 hours to locate the leak.
Description of Work: Was referred to them by a company that had quoted the repair of my external water service line. American Leak Detection quoted me $295 to locate the leak. They were not doing any of the repair, just locating the leak.
