They did an excellent job and kept me informed throughout the job. Good communicators and responsive to my questions and a little follow up and the end when I wanted a slight change to the work that they had completed.
Description of Work: They worked on my walks and front patio. Walks needed to be leveled and front patio had leveling and grouting issues as well.

Mr. Palmieri did the tuck pointing that was needed, removing the loose bricks and refitting them. He also repaired where the foundation had been moved by ground water. Extremely neat and polite. He clearly explained what he was doing and what the causes could have been for the problem. Excellent experience!

Great! Pat checked the entire perimeter of the house and attached garage. He replaced broken/missing bricks in the front porch steps and behind the house, and re-mortared many (many) places where the mortar was cracked and split.

Pat gave me a quick response and estimate via email. He gave me an approximate timeframe, subject to weather(with all this heat this summer mortar dries out too quickly). He and associate came over and completed all the work in a day. He held to his estimate and the work looks great. He also made a few suggestions that he spotted around the house foundation for us to consider.

It went really well. Pat and an assistant came out and did the tuck pointing, patching, and fixing the hole in the garage wall. The patched brick looks great; they used cement but made it look like the profile of real brick with grout lines, so that after it is painted you'll never know it was patched. They were prompt, professional, and pleasant to work with. Would definitely recommend.
Description of Work: We needed tuck pointing and patching some brick (where there was spalling) around the foundation of our house. We wanted to have it done before we had the brick re-painted white. We also had another thing - a hole in the garage wall that was there when we moved in (never knew what it was for). We put cinder blocks and bricks in there loosely to close the gap, but we wanted him to cement them in place.

Pat's professionalism was incredible. He was extremely flexible and worked within my timeframe. He was very punctual, offered a full explanation of what was needed, provided a very competitive estimate, and ever offered to fix my chimney at the same time. While his price wasn't the lowest, I was thoroughly impressed by how fair and honest he was which is tough to find these days. He also provided me one of his partner's names in another area of expertise to work on something else for me. it was a pleasure working with Pat.
Description of Work: Pat rebuilt a cinder block wall that was falling apart at the house. He also refilled in the masonry caulk around my chimney.

I agreed to him doing 2 steps, instead of one, as I assumed he would do the job properly, and up to building code. After he was done, I did tell him it looked good. I found out that just b/c something looks good, doesn't mean it was done well. I had a separate issue with my front porch. As I began to get estimates, 4 separate and unrelated professionals all told me the work Mr. Palmieri did was either done poorly, and/or not up to building code. These professionals included: another masonary, a levelling company and 2 construction companies. I still didn't want to jump to conclusions, so I contacted my City's Building Dept. The head of the Building Dept, and his Assistant came out to my property. They said the work he did was not up to code. They did state they were a bit surprised, as they knew of Mr. Palmieri, and he usually had done good work. I wrote Mr. Palmieri a letter stating what I had been told and stated I expected him to do the professionally responsible thing and reimburse me half my money. He replied, and refused, stating he did follow all codes. He wanted to know specifically which code he didn't follow. I contacted the Building Department. They gave me the codes and I passed them onto him. He continued to say he followed all codes and wanted to know if the Building Commissioner actually measured the steps. I told him I didn't know and he'd need to speak with them ,as that wasn't my expertise. He spoke to the Assistant Building Commissioner. Afterwards, Mr. Palmieri stated he still did nothing wrong and that the officials from the Building Dept. never literally measured the steps, so they couldn't say he did anything wrong. When I checked back with the Building Dept., the Assistant Building Commissioner did state that he did tell Mr. Palmieri that he hadn't actually measured it. However he maintained the measurements were not correct, and told Mr. Palmieri that if he had pulled a permit, the discrepancy would've been discovered when they came out to inspect his work. I asked them if he was legally supposed to pull a permit. They said "Yes". When I confronted Mr. Palmieri with that information, he simply replied that he hadn't needed a permit in the past when he'd done work, similar to what he did for me. I believe it's his responsibility to know when he does and does not, need to pull a permit. I am still requesting half of money reimbursed, as the Building Dept. has continued to state he didn't follow code, and it could've been avoided if had pulled the permit,

Response from Palmieri Masonry
In response to my customers complaint, I would like to point out a few items. She originally mentioned that the one step was too large. When I measured, the total height was over 16 in. I suggested to install another step so there would be 3 Smaller ones. A height over 16 in. would NOT conform to code with 2 steps because a riser cannot be more than 7 3/4 in. tall. I also explained that the concrete stoop(which was pitched slightly the wrong direction) would be expensive to replace and it could remain stable or get worse over time. I also stated that it could be replaced at a later date if needed because it is independent of the steps. Adding 2 steps was decided. I was a bit shocked to receive a letter from her(5 mos. later) saying that the job was not "to code". No one could tell me what aspect wasn't to code. All the people she talked to and no one could explain what wasn't to code. I said that i would stop over to check and she told me that IT HAD BEEN COMPLETELY TORN OUT. Really, now what chance would have to prove that it was to code? Finally I spoke with the city inspector and he said that my one riser was too high. I asked him if he measured it. He said no, it just appeared high. Really. I told him that I measured each one and that all were within 1/4 in. tolerence.(code is 3/8 in). He really had no comment after that.He did say that if i would have gotten a permit that issues like this would not happen. I do work in most east side suburbs and a permit is needed to RE-BUILD a masonry set of steps but as i called around no city said a permit was needed to INSTALL a stone tread. After 35 years building commercial, industrial and residential masonry projects And doing restoration on scores of historical buildings and structures, usuall under the scrutiny of architects, designers, owners and committees I could honestly say that I know the codes and follow them. So when I heard that another construction company told the homeowner I didn't do a good job and I asked her to be specific on what he said there was nothing specific. And certainly a "concrete leveler" would know the technical and mathematical details of masonry construction. Really. And finally the esteemed inspector couldn't take 30 seconds to measure to prove me wrong OR call me! (I live 1 minute from the job and city hall)before the site was torn apart. I have saved the best for last. This is good. I took the liberty to stop by to see how good the "replacement mason" did. And how good the inspector inspected(you know,so this would never happen). Turns out I brought a RULER and a LEVEL. I found only three items that were not to code. 1. Top riser was about 9in.(code is 7 3/4in.) 2.First riser is about 7.5 in.( code states that There cannot be more than 3/8in. variation from riser to riser. 3.cocrete stoop has no or too slight pitch. Where was the inspector ? Was this the same contractor that said my work was wrong? My customer wants 1/2 of her money back when I didn't even have the opportunity to check the work. I built the steps to code,I know because I measure from start to finish. Masonry is not an exact science but you can get close. My reputation speaks for itself.

I contacted Pat on Sunday and since he lived close he said he could take care of the job quickly. He came by Monday to inspect the steps and give me a final estimate, then came Tuesday to complete the work. He was prompt and efficient and very good to work with. He was able to spot other areas of my home that could use some work and had suggestions for how to get those repaired as well. An excellent experience!

I recently purchased a home in bad need of tuckpointing. When calling for quotes, Pat was the only one of four masons that I called who came out promptly for a quote. His quote was reasonable, though not the lowest. Because of the rainy spring, Pat was delayed from working on my home past his original estimated start date. When he was able to start the work, however, the job turned out to be worse than he expected. He had quoted me with the belief that about 10 -15 bricks would need to be removed. It turned out to be about 40 bricks were removed. However, he repaired it correctly, and only asked if I could reimburse him for the extra materials - no extra labor charge, even though the scope of the repair had about tripled. He also made suggestions of things I could do to help maintain chimney so problem did not reoccur. He and his helper were polite and neat. I would easily hire him again if I needed more masonry work.

Hope they are not confusing me with another contractor. If not,it is rare(very rare) that human error plays a part in any call back. If I am unable to do the work, if it is out of my geographic area or it is something that is not part of my expertise I always try and refer someone else. My reviews speak for themself. Thank You.

. Mr. Palmieri was a very pleasant person to work with. He also went out of his way to inspect the rest of the outside of my home for any other flaws. He will be coming back to fix some more problems that he saw. He had a helper, named Chris who was also very pleasant to work with. Chris will be coming back to do some repairs on my garage siding that I need repaired. I would recommend this company to anyone. I feel that his prices are very fair for the work that they did. Most people would not even look at a job so small, but Pat went out of his way to make sure I was satisfied.

The small back porch on our 80+-year-old house was slowly collapsing because the brick piers holding it up were unsound. I needed somebody to fix the porch's foundation. I also needed somebody to rebuild the porch itself -- its floor was rotting and the joists holding it up were failing. Pat previously had done nice work on tuckpointing my front steps, so I contracted with him for this masonry job. It was the right call. He's very skilled, honest, conscientious, and courteous. Pat assessed the situation and recommended a course of action: remove the piers; install footers, as necessary; rebuild the piers; tuckpoint the masonry steps; and fix the back wall of the house, which needed tuckpointing and holes filled in. He executed the solution expertly and at a fair price. Furthermore, at my request, he recommended a contractor to handle the porch rebuild. I took his recommendation. Again, the right call. Pat instills that kind of trust. The contractor pulled the porch away to expose the masonry and used temporary supports to hold up the porch roof. On separate days, Pat performed the masonry work, which included installing partial concrete footers. The contractor then returned to rebuild and reinstall the porch on its now sound foundation. Pat took the lead in coordinating his and the contractor's work. And he was outstanding in communicating with me throughout the process. The end result is a porch that is rock solid, safe, and looks great.
Description of Work: The brick piers holding up the back porch of our house were collapsing. Pat Palmieri installed partial concrete footers, rebuilt both piers, and tuckpointed and filled the voids on the back wall of the house.
