I have been in masonry for over 25 years. We are a family business and always have been. My goal is to meet every customers individual needs with quality work at very reasonable prices.
We had more than a dozen cracked brick and the thing was leaning to one side You can't put a band-aid on something that's gushing blood. Their work is A+. Top notch. The chimney looks better than it did originally. It looks fantastic. I had a couple of estimates, and I think their price was very reasonable. He told me he'd be over at the house at seven o'clock on Tuesday morning. He was there at 6:55. That's pretty good. He had a whole reference book of pictures and tutorials from other customers, so he was very prepared and very professional. Yes, I will use him again. I need another job done and it's going to cost a lot more money. My front steps, in the front of the house, they're sinking into the foundation, so that means they're sloped toward the front of my house which is creating a moisture problem in my basement. So, basically what has to be done is the whole front steps have to ripped out and be redone. That's about four grand, which I don't have right now. So, hopefully this fall I'll be able to get it done. I told Louis (his name is Louis Mitchell), I said, "Louis, when I'm going to do it I'm going to call you. I'm not going to shop around on price because I know you're fair, you've worked with me before, and your work is good. When I get the money together, I'll call you." I had him come out and give me an estimate, too. He's just a real fair guy. Prices are fair. Nice guy. Knows his job. It's nice to have a contractor come over with a whole catalog of pictures and reviews from previous customers and see the quality of work he's done in the past.
Description of Work: My chimney was completely beyond repair so I had it torn out of the roof deck and I did a roof and chimney at the same time. Mitchell Masonry did the chimney. They did a complete rebuild.

DO call somebody else. DON'T use him.
Description of Work: I wanted my chimney repaired, as the top rows of bricks were cracking and crumbling. I requested the same texture of bricks be used so as to match the lower rows which were to remain. The bricks he used were shorter in length in from the ones which were to remain. To make up the difference so the bricks he used would maintain the same chimney dimensions as the lower rows, he made obnoxious looking thick mortar joints between the bricks he installed. He could have iindicated the problem to me, and suggested that the lower rows be replaced as well (about 8 rows), or obtained the correct, matching size. Also, the worknmanship was extra sloppy, with joints overflowing with mortar, and his trowel was cleaned by scraping it on the bricks so the bricks were defaced with mortar. Also, no attempt was made to color the mortar he installed to match the origial mortar, so not only the brick work done is terrible, but I have multi-colored mortar to boot. The job overall represents the worst in professionalism and screams amateurishness and sloppiness. Friends and relatives who see the chimney just laugh at the job. It looks like a joke.....as if the three stooges did it. Upon calling him about the job, he chose to argue stupidly andr rudely hung up. I wouldn't recommend him to anyone for any kind of work. He just doesn't seem to care.

Terrible experience. Wouldn't recommend him for anything. Hung up on me when I called to complain.
Description of Work: The upper section of my chimney had deteriorated and I hired Mitchell to replace the bricks as required. He assured me that the new bricks would be identical to those being replaced, so that the new section would match the original which it set upon. However, they were not identical ,but rather were shorter in length. To make up the difference in length, so that the new chimney section would have the same dimension as the original, he made the mortar joints of the new section extra thick. Not only that, but he made no attempt to add coloring to the mortar so that it would blend in with the original. The result is that the new section has no resemblance to the lower, but rather has fat, stark white joints by comparisan. Not only that, but there appeared to be little or no attempt made for decent workmanship. It actually seemed that the excess mortar on his trowel was smeared right on the new bricks themselves. In that the sizing of new bricks is smaller, he could have recommended that we also replace a few lower layers of the original as well, That way, he would not have had to make those fat, ugly mortar joints. With a little effort, he could even learn to add coloring to mortar. I thought that in time that the whiteness of his mortar joints would dull and that ugliness of the job he did would not be so readily apparent , but this has unfortunately not happened. I have friends and relatives laugh at the job when they see it. When I called him to complain, he hung up on me.. I wouldn't recommend to have him work on anything. I have a relatively nice home in a woodsy setting where a lot of expense and effort has been expended over the years to keep it upgraded. All he's managed to do is create a pitiful eyesore.

Thus more Saturdays for me, filling the trench, wheelbarrow after wheelbarrow, with topsoil I had to purchase. The contract also included two other small jobs on the property resetting stone. Neither of these two jobs was done. In fairness to Mitchell's this job was performed during the miserable spring weather. But rain doesn't last forever, and I called Mr. Mitchell repeatedly asking him to come back and finish. After the first call or two he simply stopped answering his p hone when he saw it was my number. Perhaps Mr. Mitchell would be a reliable contractor if your are able to stay home and supervise him all day until the work is done, and refuse to pay anything until you are satisfied. But if you want a contractor you can rely on to perform what your contract obligates him to do, don't look to Mitchell's Masonry for satisfactory work.
Description of Work: Last spring we engaged Mitchell's Masonry to rebuild a retaining wall on our property. We will not be using his services again. The contract specified job-site clean-up and trash hauled away. The site was not cleaned up and I, not Mr. Mitchell, have had to do a good bit of the hauling. I have spent several Saturdays digging mortar chips out of the dirt in the garden bed at the base of the wall, filling multiple five gallon buckets which, because the city garbage service won't take them, I have to take to a dump. He also left a 50 lb bag of masonry cement in my garage. Perhaps worst of all, the wall repair itself was not completed. When Mr. Mitchell walked away with his check--regrettably, he took advantage of my wife's kind heart on a day I was not at home and insisted on being paid--he left behind a 20 foot long trench two feet deep behind the rebuilt wall. He told my wife that, although the contract specified the area behind the wall was to be backfilled, I would have to take care of it myself.

Not only is this claim completely egregious it is also defamatory. I completed the work per the contract I had with him and his wife. He is correct in that this work was completed during this past spring which was one of the worst on record in a record setting season of rain for the Cleveland area. I most certainly back filled the trench behind the wall he speaks of – however anyone knows that with months of rain storm after rain storm – the dirt turns to mud and shifts and settles. I do not control the weather. I cannot control what happens after my work on a site is complete that is most certainly an act of God that is not covered under a warranty set by me. The wall repair was complete; the trench was back filled when I received my check. I resent the fact that Member believes I took advantage of anyone’s “kind heart” – I performed the work specified in the contract and I believe anyone with a ‘brain’ would then expect to be paid. As for mortar chips in his garden bed – I notified Member before starting work that since the garden bed was at the base of the wall (which he also indicates in his comment) there was the possibly of some things falling into the garden, some dirt being stepped on, etc. He said that was not an issue – although apparently a full 6 months later – now that he is writing a complaint it is now an issue. As for the “other small jobs” – this included moving 3 (three) pieces of stone. When Member called my phone it was about moving 3 pieces of stone – nothing about a trench or cleaning up mortar chips from his grass. He called weeks after the job was complete at the height of my busy season which is the summer. I will always do everything I can for a customer to go the extra mile – but I could not drop everything I was doing to come move 3 stones at that time. However – instead of being understanding of the fact that this was something that could be taken care of at a later time – Member threatened me. AT THIS POINT – I WAS DONE DEALING WITH MEMBER!! I have worked for too many years – and put my blood, sweat and tears into this company just to have some person threaten to ‘write a bad review on angie’s list’ if I didn’t drop everything to move 3 pieces of stone for him. I will not have Angie’s List which is supposed to be a tool for small businesses like mine – used against me. I also have to wonder why if this was such an issue for him – it took him 6 months to get around to writing his false claim. I will not be refunding anything to Member – I do not take kindly to being threatened – and at one time I would have been more than willing to work with them on any issue they had even if it was something out of my control – but that time has long since passed at around the time I was threatened by Member!

I hired him to match the bricks and do some patchwork; using the same size and type of brick. After he did the job, I noticed something looked off. After having a family gathering I had a family member notice that the bricks were slightly smaller than the ones initially installed. He put in very thick mortar joints. The mortar is very white, which it appears he didn't attempt at all to make the mortar the same color. I have stark white, and the original mortar. He could have went down 4 tiers of bricks to make this all match. I'm left with one level having multiple mortar textures and colors. The work was sloppy. I attempted to contact him to get this resolved around December of 2010, and he didn't want to help fix it.
Description of Work: I have a chimney that was built in levels on the back of my home. This took care of the heating system. What was happening is that the bricks were coming apart.

Response from MITCHELL'S MASONRY
There is some confusion on why this is just now being raised as an issue. The above mentioned work was completed in December of 2009, however - as you stated above - you didn't contact Mitchell's Masonry until December of 2010 and you are now posting this comment in June of 2011. Mitchell's Masonry will always make every attempt to address any issues that a customer may have when we have been contacted within a resonable time frame upon completion of a job. With that being said - it is never too late to hear feedback and try to improve upon it. While we understand that you probably know it is impossible to exactly match new mortar with mortar and bricks that are 40 years old - we agree that our employees should have made more of an effort to blend the mortar colors or re-estimate the work to include grinding out and tuck pointing the remaining teirs of brick to make all of the mortar the same color. This is something that we will be sure to address in the future with customers wishing to have mortar and/or bricks the same color as is present with the originally built structure. Thank you for your feedback as we work every day to improve our operations to better serve our customers and improve our growing small business.

Mitchell's Masonry now has an email address (mitchellsmasonry@yahoo.com) that is monitored frequently throughout the day, we have hired an office manger to return emails and phone calls within 24 hours of receiving them and we have a message on the Mitchell's Masonry phone line indicating to current and perspective customers that due to the volume of work we are currently receiving - it may take up to 24 hours for a response. I had difficulty getting return calls from the company to set up an estimate. I left several voicemails, one with several dates and times that I was available, but I never received a return call. There is no office with a secretary, just the owner's phone. The owner showed up on one of the dates unannounced - he was waiting when I got home from work. Based on the good reviews on Angies List and the low estimate he gave for the work, I decided to hire them. I cut him some slack for the unprofessionality of not returning my phone calls - I assumed that he was really busy because the work they did was good and they were in demand. I was not home the morning the work was scheduled to be done (Wednesday 10/20/10). The owner said it would be fine if no one was home, as long as they had access to water and electricity. I left around 8:30 a.m. on the day the work was scheduled and the crew had not arrived yet. The owner never set a specific time, just said they would do the work on the 20th, weather permitting. I arrived home for lunch around 1:00 p.m., and they were packing up to leave. There were 3 younger guys, the owner was not there. I thought they were leaving for lunch. When I asked if they thought they would get it all done in one day, one of the guys said they were already done. I was surprised because other companies had said this would be an all-day job, and they were done in about 4 hours at the most. I had a chance to really look at the house on Saturday and noticed numerous spots that were missed on all 4 sides of the house. There are still many areas with cracked and missing mortar. And there is one small spot that appears as if they ground it out and forgot to fill it. I have left 2 detailed phone messages regarding the problems with the work but have not received a return phone call. I am very disappointed. I expected much better based on the good reviews that they received from Angie's List in the past. I understand that employees may not always do the best job if the boss is not there. But I would expect a company owner to be responsive to a customer complaint and try to correct any problems as soon as possible. He has not made any attempt to return my calls to set up a day for me to show him the areas that were missed. I left both my cell phone number (which has caller ID and voicemail) and my work number. On November 29, 2010, the owner showed up unannounced at my door as I was getting ready to leave for work. I showed him some of the areas that were missed, and he agreed that they were not done. He said that they would be back to fix them at a later date. He left and I have not heard back from him since. And now it is snowing, too late for this to be fixed.

Mitchell's Masonry is a small business with only a few employees. Within the last year we have hired an office manager, set up a website (which is currently in the process of being redesigned to better serve our customers), have email capabilities and have obtained a permanent office space. We are continuing to make changes and progress for our customers and we value everyone's feedback. We understand that it is not possible to make everyone happy 100% of the time - but we are continuing to grow and expand and in doing so - upgrading our operations. Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback with us as we work to improve our business everyday.

Louis has an answering machine. He was left two messages and didn't call back. He was tried again the next morning and he picked up the phone. He said he would come look at the job late afternoon on Friday the 22nd. At 6:30 P.M. there was no Louis, called his machine again and still haven't heard from him yet today is 10/28). A call if you can't make it would be nice. Maybe his work is good but his Professionalism is not there at all. I got his name to fix the bricks at my Parents house and I sure enjoy visiting my Parents but waiting there from noon until eight at night for someone who doesn't even have the courtesy to call. I'm a busy person too in fact I'm sure everybody is. This guy is surely off my list.

The entire experience was wonderful from meeting Louis to obtain the estimate to completion of the work. His employees were very professional and polite. They cleaned up each day and left no mess or damage upon completion. Louis made very good suggestions as to altering our 40 year-old chimneys so as to avoid future damage. The way the chimneys were originally constructed allowed for water to infiltrate the bricks and mortar causing the damage. We will definitely use this company for all our future masonry and brick work.
