I called Huckabee Masonry Inc. , on Tues April 23, 2013. Left a message describing my problem. The next day, in the morning I received a call from the younger Huckabee, who said he was outside inspecting my steps. when I came outside Mr. Huckabee the younger, pointed out the work he could perform to repair the steps. After showing me how much the tuck pointing was bowing, I knew I would have to replace the steps. I was not pressured and there was no upsell on the work. One riser had a hole in it , another riser was crumbling, and the railings were rusted and in danger of losing support. It was a no brainer, steps had to be replaced. I was given an estimate that day; read it over and agreed to go ahead with the job. Usually you shouldn't pay a deposit more than a third of full price. Because of what was to be done and how the job was explained to me , I paid a deposit of half up-front, the balance upon completion of the job. Friday Messrs. Huckabee arrived promptly before and began knocking down the old steps. They worked all day until quitting time at 4pm. Returned Saturday before 8 am and finished the work a little after 3 in the afternoon. I looked over the work and I was genuinely elated. Mr Huckabee senior and jr, cleaned up as they said they would. I paid the balance and thanked the men for their excellent work. A couple of days of great weather helped. Thumps up on this project.
Description of Work: My sandstone and brick steps were replaced. The use of rock salt over the years eroded the steps. The sandstone risers and the brick piping were removed. A base was laid on the dirt. A center support of brick was put in to support the risers and the tuck pointing. The old steps had bricks laid vertically, which gave less support. Before each rise was put into place, tuck pointing was performed. In no time at all five risers were in place, tuck pointing held everything in place, and the the brick and sandstone began to settle. Can't walk on steps for a few days, but I no longer have to wonder I am going to fall through anyone of my steps.

Contact was made quickly, estimate made quickly as well. Job was scheduled and completed within a reasonable time period. Workers found creative ways to solve problems. Work was all done in one day and considering what they had to work with, it turned out wonderfully. I would assume they are not the cheapest you can find but their work is worth what you pay for it. Would recommend to anyone who needs similar work.
Description of Work: We needed significant repair to our brick and stone front steps and tiled porch. A step was damaged, bricks had come loose, some of the tiles on the porch had fallen off and there was a lot of tuckpointing that needed to be done to the steps as well as the front of the house.

My question to you is what makes it unprofessional to determine that there are some jobs that HMI are not going to quote or do? We do not claim to be able to do every type of job and if we think the job required is not a good fit for us we will respectfully decline doing a quote. We find that this openness and honesty avoids wasting customers and employees time and energy so that you can spend that time finding the right company for you. Good luck getting your job done.

I called them for an estimate, they wanted to confirm that i knew they only do masonry. He asked me over the phone, before he even seen what may need to be done if an estimate of $3000.00 was a good offer. I told him I wasn't sure because he was the first person i called. When he came and gave the estimate it was writen on the back of his business card, and did not including a potential $1-2000.00 for the footer. I was very disappointed in the lack of professionalism. When I asked for references, he said he would provide them when i agreed to have the work done.

After having done masonry and sales for over 20 years one thing I have learned is that no matter how hard you try,you can't please everyone. We have also come to learn that the only customers that have a problem with our service is the ones who treat us in a rude and disrespect way and then get upset when we peacefully and respectfully vacant that situation asap. Some people will always get upset when they can't have everything exactly the way they like. We realize that not everyone is familiar with the cost of masonry and thus will give a ball park over the phone sometimes to see if that's within their budget. This keeps us from spending time quoting jobs that are outside of a customers budget. She's upset because she could not afford our price and accuses us for being unprofessional because we would not reduce our price to fit her budget. We wish her well.

Outstanding work and the crew took extra precautions to maintain proper disposal of debris. What stood out to me is one of the guys while on the roof stated that it is supposed to rain the next whole week so he took a few minutes to clear my upper dormer gutters that were filled with leaves
Description of Work: Top shelf contractor and company. Repaired the tuck pointing on my furnace chimney. Showed up on time. Professional job and perfect experience. I will be calling them this summer to complete additional work that needs done on my windows. Also, Huckabee Masonry responded quickly and beat the cold weather. I truly appreciated this consideration as December is a bit tricky .with weather and the work needed to be completed before Winter set in.

The Huckabees came on time for an initial estimate. They told me what the problem was and what needed to be repaired and how they would do it. They asked when we needed it done by. They also said that the price might go about between $100 and $200 dependent upon any problems that they encountered. They came out on the day that they promised and did the work. Indeed, we had to pay approximately $150 more dollars that the original estimate. The work was done on time and with great skill that you don't see much any more. The mortor matched the rest of the house. And they cleaned up everything. Very satisfied. Will use them again and recommend them to one and all. martin friedman

Based on the remarkable reviews for this company on Angie's List, I called to schedule an estimate for masonry work. I called on Friday & left a msg with name, location, phone number & an overview of the work. I received a call back the following Tuesday or Wednesday & scheduled an appt for Friday afternoon for a free estimate (I verified that it would indeed be free). Within 2 hrs of the appt, a man identifying himself as "Vince" and "the estimator" called to tell me that he wouldn't be able to come out because the company wasn't registered in my area, and for "such a small job," it wouldn't be worth it for him to come out because the registration costs would make his bid far more expensive than others. (He later said he could still make the appointment, but please read on...) The company had a whole week (at the very least, more than one business day) to determine its registration status & share this information prior to my rearranging my whole day to accommodate the appointment. When I told the estimator this inconvenience would be reflected in my Angie's List review, he proceeded to argue with me for 5-10 minutes. He did not apologize nor acknowledge that there was ample time prior to the appointment date to research and contact me with this information despite his disclosure of running his business based on "Christian values" (never mind the fact that I am an ordained minister). He made excuses, stating the estimator often doesn't get the list of appointments until the day of, and he thought he was performing a good service by calling me less than two hours before the appt., giving this as an example of honesty, a good Christian value. If I had this information the day before, or even the morning of, my inconvenience would have been minimized, but less than 2 hours before the mid-afternoon appointment, coupled with an argumentative, unapologetic attitude = inconsiderate and bad business. I told him that as an Angie's List member, it was my duty to honestly inform the AL community of my experience with Huckabee Masonry. "Vince" continued to talk over me throughout the phone call, refusing to listen to my concerns. He seemed concerned only regarding a bad mark on his image (despite my reiteration that this was not an attack on a person, but rather disenchantment with the practices of a business that inconvenienced this potential customer), and I had to hang up on him to end the conversation. It will be interesting to see how the company spins all of this in its response, considering its response to the review from March 19, 2010. While I concede that neither I nor anyone I know is perfect, I feel there was a lack of professionalism displayed by this representative of Huckabee Masonry, and as a result, I cannot and will not, in good conscience, use nor recommend its services. *Update* This written response from Huckabee Masonry is the first apology I have received from this company. Unfortunately the response is full of lies, as there was no remedy offered during the call other than to make the appt and waste both of our time due to its necessity to charge me for the registration fees in my suburb, a fact that should have been realized and communicated to me prior to the appt date since my initial message seeking an estimate clearly stated the city in which I live (yes, that message was left a full week prior to the appt date, and at least a couple business days before my call was returned to make the appt, and at least one+ business day prior to the appt). At no time did I demand the estimator come out to give an estimate; "Vince" made it very clear the job was too small and with charging me the add'l $200+ in city registration fees would make his bid uncompetitive with other companies' bids. My complaint was always that his company had more than sufficient time to relay their registration status to me rather than to wait until less than two hours before the appt, thus creating the inconvenience. At no time did I threaten to "tear down [his] company" - those were in fact his words when I said it is my duty as an Angie's List member to inform the AL community honestly of my interaction with the company. At no point did I become irate; I clearly stated my frustration to the estimator, who did not want to listen once I mentioned Angie's List. He continued to talk over me, refusing to listen, refusing to acknowledge that there was a simple lesson to be learned from this experience, and it became clear that the only way to end the phone call was to take the path of least resistance and simply hang up. It is clear this company chooses to fictionalize its accounts of situations when potential customers disagree with their practices. I will gladly take you up on the offer for anger management classes if you attend with me - it seems you need an angel to support you in your personal growth and development and you might actually learn techniques that help your business - and life - grow in positive ways instead of negative ones.

Response from Huckabee Masonry Inc
It is with great regret that I respond to this bad report especially since I know the member is an ordained minister. We have great respect for our customers and esteem the value and call of all ministers as we practice biblical principles ourselves. We wish we were perfect and had a crystal ball to notify us in advance of postponements or cancellations so that we would never inconvenience anyone. Unfortunately that's not how life is, so we strive for the next best thing. We strive to notify clients of changes asap.We have never had a client handle a cancellation with such disgust as this member. The first thing mentioned when we called the member was a sincere apology for the inconvenience we caused her for canceling our appointment and after finding out of how she was inconvenienced so greatly we offered her a remedy. We find it so very unfortunate that the member failed to mention that in her report. The member mentioned it was her duty to tear company's down if they don't do what she says and demanded we give her a quote or face her wrath on Angie's list. The member's threat of giving us a bad mark caused us to withdraw our offer of remedy and suggested it would be best if we didn't attempt to start a business relationship with her because her threat was inappropriate behavior in our opinion. This caused the member to become very irate and as she mentioned she hung up on us. The member's story doesn't all add up for example she states her appointment was made on either Tues. or Weds. and then states we had a week to notify her of the cancellation when the appointment was scheduled for Friday of the same week.. We have and always will be apologetic and try to remedy any concerns of our clients in a professional manner and find it very disingenuous that a minister would distort the facts. She also seems very happy to report that she hung up on us as if that is becoming behavior of a Minister. More importantly than her finding someone that can do her job we pray that her heart becomes more loving so that she might represent her call in a way that inspires people to handle disagreements fairly, with love and with integrity. Member we again apologize for having to cancel your appointment and the inconvenience it caused you. We forgive you for your inappropriate behavior after receiving the news of your appointment being canceled. We lovingly suggest that you take a anger management class and we will be happy to pay for it for you if you can't afford it.

The work was done in a craftsmanlike manner, the old foundation was removed down to a cement slab and a new foundation built on top of that. The finished work looks very nice, and we are pleased with the work. However, we were disappointed with the price. When the original brickwork was removed, the workers discovered a cement slab beneath, about 15-20 inches below stone slab, which meant they didn't have to dig to the full 38 inches, pour a footer, and build up the masonry to the level at which they found the cement slab. The work was completed in less than one day, and the price was adjusted to $1200 instead of the original estimate of $1700. We had received several bids for this work and selected Huckabee because their bid was competitive - we felt the final price would have been much lower if we'd known about the cement slab in advance. I would hire Huckabee Masonry again, based on the quality of their work, and their responsiveness.
Description of Work: The front steps had pulled away from the house and settled so that water ran back towards the house. We asked to have the front steps rebuilt (cinder block and brick foundation with stone slab on top). The original estimate of $1700 included digging a hole for a new footing to 38 inches, pouring the footing and building up the masonry from there and replacing the slab on top. The job was estimated to take 3 days to complete.

I needed to have my front step unit tuck pointed by Sep 1st. I contacted Huckabee via the email option on their listing, and they contacted me the same day. After playing phone tag we set up an appt for an estimate. Vince came out, gave me a couple options for the work needing to be done, and was very understanding of budgetary restrictions. Once I called back to confirm I wanted him to do the work, he was able to complete the job less than a week later.

The guy who did the work was good. He was here and did the work. He asked me to call him if I had any problems. So, I called him and told him that I wanted the front stoop fixed. He did the work the same day. He came right back and fixed it. We will have to see how it holds up. He is an interesting guy. He has a commercial business, but he does the home stuff because he likes getting the feedback from satisfied customers. It makes him feel good. Whatever he does looks nice and his price is not outrageous as well. I spent $400 for the service. He was highly recommended on Angie’s List.

Hello member, Unfortunately people or machines are not perfect. Sometimes messages get cut off before the callback number can be retrieved and sometimes messages are accidentally deleted. We at HMI strive to do our best however we do not claim to be perfect. We believe in practicing trying to get an understanding, being accountable and forgiving all. We have no record of your call. We hope in the future that you will consider giving companies the benefit of the doubt before giving them such a bad grade especially since you can't be sure if your message was ever received. Now have a great day.
