Mr. Hoffman is a contractor not a designer. He suggested the name of a designer (we did not call the suggested designer). The offer was not consistent with this providers skill set. He wanted to sell construction services not design a kitchen. This was a waste of my money.

although Barry was delayed a bit by a computer glitch, his review of the project and 3-d plan were very helpful. He is both personable and knowledgeable. If we move forward with this project, I will definitely consider him.

Mr. Hoffman is focused on customer service and works effectively with the customer from start to fininish. When the initial project ran into problems stemming from work done by another company, he suggested a number of options to stay within my budget. He uses skilled and veteran craftsmen.

good- some difficulty in scheduling the appointment for repairs between my tenant and the repairman, but he did excellent work and the drain clog cost was on the lower end of the estimate and was very reasonable.

Ah, yes. I remember this gentleman. He was difficult and demanding and his condo was not conveniently located for the tradesmen. I did not want the work and Mr. [Member Name Removed] did not accept that.

I can't possibly write about all the details but can say that the carpenters, plumbers and electricians were great. Usually one job had to be completed before another could begin. The painter did a very nice job and the floor installer was very accommodating to be sure we were comfortable with our new floor. All workers were professional and cleaned up very well when their part of the remodel was complete. Mr. Hoffman is very easy to work with. The finished kitchen looks wonderful and we are very happy.
Description of Work: Mr. Hoffman's crews replaced the cabinets, counters, sink and faucet. They installed a new floor, removed wallpaper and then painted the walls. When my appliances came, they installed them as well. The plumbers put in a water line for the refrigerator ice maker and hooked up the gas as the gas line had never been used. The previous stoves were always electric. A lot of work was completed in my new kitchen.

If Ms. (removed member name) kitchen looks great it is because of her sense of color and design. I liked it because it was clean, neat and restful. I am very glad that she enjoys her kitchen and I hope that it will continue to give her pleasure for many years.

I do not quite remember things happening as (Member name removed) describes them. I did contact her two or three times and each time she was on her way out the door. She did invite me to call up until 11:00PM but I have to admit that I was too tired to call that late. I was going to try again when I found an email telling me she wanted a refund and did not want to hear from me again. However, I am very concerned that there was a misunderstanding and that a potential client was left with a less the favorable impression of myself and Hoffman Construction. I will use this as a reminder about how important customer service is. (Member name removed) will, of course, receive a complete refund. I am troubled that this ever happened.

From start to finish, these guys made this job a breeze. Barry (the boss, I think) got in touch and came by to discuss options and take tile measurements etc. Then, a few days later (once we had picked out our tile preference), Dave began work. Now, what can I say about Dave? Meticulous, precise, talented and ultra clean spring to mind. On the first day he took out the old stuff and cleaned up very carefully behind him. Over the next couple of days, the new hardboard went in and the tiles were put into place etc. Our old house / tub area has a couple of tough corners / nooks, but Dave did a great job in cutting the tiles to fit. Handily, he finished the job the day before we were headed off on vacation, so now we're back we can use the shower (we were advised to leave the caulk 10 days to fully dry). It looks fantastic and feels solid and smooth and the price was really excellent (I was quoted $2,800 by another provider, incredibly). All in all, very pleased indeed and I can definitely recommend these guys.
Description of Work: Took out old tileboard above tub and installed new hardboard and tiles. Also installed new backsplash for sink.

Mr. Hoffman arrived promptly as scheduled on June 10, 2014. We had scheduled the appointment so far in advance I had to remind him why he was at my home. He listened to my list of desires for the kitchen design and made some suggestions. He spent a lot of time measuring the space and transferring the info to his form. When complete he said the measurements did not add up and re-measured saying he would make the changes at a later time. He called one week later to say he did not have the drawings complete because he was behind. I have not heard from him since.

Ms. [removed member name] called about the need to rebuild her banister. This is outside our usual work but I agreed to come out. I came out one time when she wasn't there. It was a large porch with a second story deck that had over 50 linial feet of railing that was missing. When I finally was able to come out to meet Ms. [removed member name], her husband was there also. I had brought a catalogue of exterior raling products to show them what was possible. The original railing had been built by a semi skilled handyman and anchored in such a way as to cause the roof to rot. I pointed this out to the [removed member name]that there were spongy areas in the roof and they had a problem. Mr. [removed member name] very firmly expressed to me that they only intended to live in the house eight or nine more years and had no intention of investing any more money into the house than what was necessary to appease the building inspectors. If there were rotten areas in the roof, the carpenter would have to work around them. I really felt at that time I did not want the job and I should have told them so. I had been, at that time ill with pneumonia so it took me a while to get back to clients. Before I could repsond they posted on Angie's List. The last time I drove by their house, someone had put two lengths of the rail that had failed back up. It is obvious that the [removed member name] were looking for handyman to do a cosmetic repair and not a carpenter to truly fix the problem. But again, I should have promptly called them to decline the project.

I was presented with multiple design options for a very small kitchen with storage, function and seating issues. The provider suggested removing the soffit to increase cabinet size and storage square footage. To provide ease of access, an open floor plan and additional seating I was presented with options to remove a non load-bearing wall, the relocation of the door leading to the rear deck, relocation of appliances, and additional cabinetry in the laundry room. I was truly impressed with the possible options for this 73 year old house.

Barry and his team did a great job on the bathroom. In putting together the bid, he understood my budget constraints and had options to give me ways to reduce the costs. He was OK with me doing demolition, painting, and purchasing some materials directly as ways to save money. He recommended products that he trusted, look great, and didn't break the bank. I know he was also working on high-end projects for other clients, but you wouldn't know it from the way he kept an eye out for ways to give me the best bathroom for my budget. It's been completed for over a month now, and everything is working perfectly. It's absolutely beautiful, it looks like it cost far more than it did, and I get to enjoy it every single day.

It went ok except I didn't get the 3-D renderings of the new kitchen plan that the Big Deal mentioned. Barry did draft an outline of my current kitchen. The process took longer than I expected, but I am very pleased with the results. I now have an expanded upstairs hallway that essentially functions as a room, and a sun room that I can use year-round. Mr. Hoffman and those working for him were considerate, professional, and did a terrific job.

Overall, the bulk of the project went well. Our remodeled kitchen, the project's main focus, is beautiful and well-suited to our needs. The contractor, Barry Hoffman, is congenial, kind and fair-minded and seems eager to please the customer. Throughout the bulk of the project, he was generally good about staying in touch with us and typically responded quickly to our voicemails, emails and text messages. He completed the project within the promised time frame and close to budget. We wanted to have a new, working kitchen before the August 31, 2013 arrival of houseguests, and Barry met that deadline with a couple weeks to spare. Generally, the subcontractors did excellent work, cleaned up well after themselves and were friendly and respectful toward our home and privacy. John, a carpenter, and Paul, a painter, deserve special mention as good-natured guys and superb craftsmen. There were a few notable flubs and oversights during the project. Barry often seemed pulled in too many different directions and several times failed to maintain good communication with his team members. UPDATE on June 27, 2014 (approximately 10 months after the project was completed): Project followup has been a major disappointment. We've waited months for a couple relatively minor fixes to be made in the kitchen; Barry offered one excuse after another for the extended delays. The kitchen fixes were supposed to be taken care of at last yesterday, but the carpenter never showed up as scheduled and didn't call to reschedule until this morning, after we complained to Barry. We've had to change our ratings accordingly.

The quality of the work was excellent throughout. I was also very comfortable with the workmen who were in and out of the house. Originally I had asked to delay the floor finishing until June when I would be away for about 10 days. Unfortunately Mr. Hoffman contacted me to let me know he wasn't satisfied with the floor finisher he had been using and we would have to reschedule. I wasn't happy with the delay but the wait was worth it in that the floors look great and in such a situation I would again rely on the professional judgement of my contractor. There was a miscommunication about painting one or both sets of folding doors on the closet but that was the only negative. I would recommend this company and would use them again.
Description of Work: I had damage from Sandy in October 2012 & the repairs involved replacing ceiling tiles in the basement, drywall work & painting in my living room, foyer & upstairs closet & refinishing the hardwood floors on the first floor. I also had several boards replaced on my outside deck that was not part of the storm damage. The work was completed between February and August 2013.

Barry Hoffman, owner of the company, returned my initial call within an hour and came to inspect the work to be done on the same day. He was clear about what needed to be done, how it would be accomplished, and the best way to do the work. He was patient while I made changes to the work after the Shaker Heights city inspector clarified for me what needed to be done. Barry gave me an accurate estimate and the work was finished within a couple of days. His men were punctual, neat, polite, and even cleaned up after themselves, sweeping out my sunroom and vacuuming the floor. I was very pleased with the quality of the work- the sunroom looks better than it did before and is now completely waterproof, sealed to the elements, and (best of all) passed the city inspection. Thanks, Barry!

Barry is a nice guy with a lot on his plate. If you have nothing but time on your hands and are extremely patient, you will get the job done. Though he never did offer a guarantee / warranty for the work done. We received a few estimates initially and Barry?s came in below the others. Keep in mind we were occupying the house during work done on the living room, kitchen, and bathrooms. From the beginning we mentioned our budget and noted things that were absolute and things that were nice if we could afford them after the absolutes. He was very accommodating and flexible in changing the work requested .. I felt in the beginning when deciding who to contract with he welcomed different ideas and changes to fit our budget , so We did modify our requests often during the planning (as we had plenty of time to do so) which was initially well received but eventually did seem to annoy him after awhile There was significant inertia initiating the job, i. E. A couple of months , so much so that a few things we asked him to do we ended up getting done faster by going through angie?s list deals but things that were pertinent to daily living and couldn't wait When the work finally did get started it seemed disorganized . There were many days they showed up late or even once not at all to do the work. Again we were in the house waiting and would have appreciated phone calls instead of having to try to hunt these guys down as this interrupted other plans. The electrician never came at a time when he said he would and had to be reminded every time he did come what needed to be done. The tile guys were supposed to regrout the tub. They did most of it but seemed to miss important patches. They also used our newly installed sink for their work instead of a more industrial one a few feet away on the same floor in the washroom. They also left signs of their presence throughout the house with shoe tracks, tiles not well cleaned. There was also miscommunication about what could be done and how it would look. For example, We initially planned to do a fiberglass surround in a shower , the ordering was significantly delayed, then in the end he said he couldn't find the right surround since there is a window in the shower, which was obviously always there. But by then we just wanted it all to be done, so we settled on an awkward tile that went over some but not all of the existing tile. The plumbers were a group of nice guys who did the job well, but lets just say dont present well. Paul, the painter, took the initiative to do things with us more directly which did help to expedite things when we could not get in touch with Barry. He has great attention to detail and is very thorough. As this was a significant part of the work done, our overall satisfaction was highly contingent upon his work. The counter guy was very knowledgeable and flexible. Would we hire Barry again? In retrospect, i don't know. Probably not. We are very flexible people in general , but were stretched beyond our limits. But, if you're on a smaller budget with no regard for time, he may be the contractor for you.

I appreciate the comments and the candor with which you give your feedback. Hiring a contractor to do work in your home always promises to have challenges. I like to tell people you can usually pick two out of these three things when you are having work done, cheap, fast or correctly. Sadly, the likelihood of all three happening on one job is not very high. Considering that the work we did for you was top quality, reasonably priced and reasonably prompt in light of the fact that the time frame was cut from two months to one, I would suggest that you did quite well. Juggling suppliers, various skilled laborers and intruding in one’s household is no easy task, thank you for allowing me to be your contractor and thanks again for all your honest feedback.

He was nice, he followed up through email and he talked to me on the phone. He talked to me on the phone 2 or 3 times, he came out and then he followed up with an in-depth analysis of what I needed to do, so he gave me a couple of options, and then he sent me an in-depth quote which I really appreciated. He explained exactly what each part was. I needed a complete roof and he showed me what the complete roof would include and also some gutter work and for the back porch, he explained exactly what he was going to do with it, what we needed to do it and how long it would take him. Then we went through almost the whole house. He was really good at what he did and I would definitely use him again.

Thank you so much.
