Extremely frustrated that a call to "cancel or reschedule" comes in at 10 minutes before the appointment. I understand things come up (as you noted in Friday) but you call 10 minutes before when clearly you weren't en route?!

It is frustrating to have a service provider cancel at the last minute. I had meant to call earlier but I was still trying to find a back-up childcare person. My scheduled childcare provider called in from the hospital emergency room that she had broken her wrist and would not be able to come. Mr. [Member Name Removed] wanted to scheduled a meeting but he was unavailable during normal business hours. He either wanted late evening or a weekend. I accommodated him with a Sunday morning meeting at his home. I apologize that I was unable keep the appointment but I also made the accommodation to meet him 10:00 on a Sunday morning. I offered him a replacement time but he refused and said he was no longer interested in my services.

We purchased a home built in 1910 in Tremont Ohio that needed major repairs in order to make it livable. We used a 203K loan to purchase the house, and the loan process was very complicated, but Barry was thoughtful and patient throughout the whole process. The work is excellent, and we love our home. Barry has even been attentive since the work has been completed, helping us fix some unforeseen but minor plumbing issues, and recommending a number of sub contractors for other jobs. Just like any job, there were bumps in the road, but we would certainly hire Barry again. Barry's expertise and the quality of his work make him a great pick.
Description of Work: Barry remodeled our kitchen, our bathroom, refinished all of our floors, redid the tuck pointing on our brick house, retouched our stairs, and painted the entire interior of our house.

It was a wonderful project in an exciting neighborhood. The [Member Name Removed]'s home is a rowhouse built circa 1905. It cleaned up beautifully and looks stunning with their mid-century modern furniture and design.

Since this was actually the first remodeling job I?ve ever had done through a general contractor, I turned to Angie?s List for a description of what a contractor is responsible for in order to give a fair review. According to Angie, ?A general contractor will assess the project from the initial meeting with the homeowner and devise a plan to guide the job all the way to completion. Ultimately, the role of a general contractor is to oversee the day-to-day operations of a project while acting as the communication liaison for all parties involved.? When I called Barry, it was initially to find out if he did re-facing of cabinets. During that phone call, he asked some important questions to find out what my needs and concerns were. The reason I was hesitant about a complete cabinet remodel was because I did not want to have workers in my house for weeks on end. Once Barry understood that concern, and got information on the size of my kitchen (11? X 10.5?) and the aspects of what I wanted done (cabinets and counter only ? no new flooring or appliances) he assured me the project would not take more that 1 ? 1 ½ weeks. He made some suggestions to alter my initial plans to make the remodel both less expensive, and to make the layout attractive and efficient. He gave me a rough estimate of the costs, and once I had agreed that I would like to proceed, he had diagrams and 3D drawings drawn up so I could get a visual of what would be done. A contractor is also responsible for providing a detailed contract. According to Angie, a good contract should have a job description, start and completion dates, payment terms, procedure for work order changes, and a detailed outline of costs, labor and materials. My contract had all but the details of the labor costs. This did make it difficult for me to reference how much I should be saving if/when I requested changes to the plan, so this would be a recommendation that I would suggest other homeowners should request as part of their contract. To give you a general idea of material costs, the Waypoint 600 series cabinets cost $3,500 and the granite was $1,680. I also had a new sink, faucet, and microwave installed (another $680). Finally, I came to realize that a contractor can only provide great service if he has a great crew (and that is only going to happen if someone has been in business for awhile and has learned who is skilled and reliable). Fortunately for me, all of the subcontractors were wonderful! The carpenters were skilled, and were able to coordinate their work with the electrician and plumber so that it all went smoothly. All the subcontractors were also extremely polite and professional. There were a few extra ?corrections? that needed to be made (extra circuits, moving some water pipes), and they answered all my questions and addressed all my concerns with a phrase I came to love, ?That won?t be a problem.? The last few days of ?touch-up? did get stretched out a bit, but if we don?t count that small glitch, the entire cabinet and countertop replacement took 7 working days. Barry came through within his time estimate and I love the finished product.
Description of Work: Replaced kitchen cabinets and counter. Added cabinets & microwave built-ins.

Hoffman construction does quality, thorough work at a very competitive price. We were pleased with the end result of our remodel, and would hire them again if we were looking to get more work done. The only complaint I have is the time it took to get things done. We did run into some issues with material delays due to a port workers strike in CA, preventing items manufactured in Asia from coming in on time. However we still had to wait, sometimes weeks, to get certain contractors in to complete our job. Regardless, for the work we were able to complete for the price, it was still worth dealing with these delays.

Basement remodel started well and on time, initial design, complete framing and dry-walling of new space, including closets, painting, electrical installation, 6 closet doors, 4 new glass block windows, minor plumbing (reworking of existing plumbing in space). Installed Miracle Stone flooring throughout which looks fabulous and was reasonably priced compared to similar products. After initial inspection and framing went up, we found that we needed to have exterior waterproofing done. This resulted in an additional cost, but the subcontractor Mr. Hoffman recommended did good quality work within the budget we set forth. Mr. Hoffman and his lead carpenter Mr. Newton were very accommodating as minor changes needed to be made from initial design-even after some of the framing went up - to allow us to have more functional storage areas and function of the design. We did have some communication issues between the 3 of us (owners, carpenter, contractor), but these were all resolved to our satisfaction. We provided light fixtures which were installed. They were able to re-install some existing shelving in the new space, and purchased some new as well. Although there was an additional charge for this, it provides much needed functionality. They re-installed office shelving and cabinetry in the new basement office which were original to the home from the previous office. All work was done to code and we have had no issues with function of anything since completion. Overall the new basement adds functional living, office, and storage space to our home and we are very pleased with the end result! We also had cosmetic refinishes in an upstairs bedroom (new carpet, wallpaper removal, painting) and a new window installed. The window installation was challenging and delayed the timeline a bit, but from the outside you would never know it was different than the other windows on the house. We needed to have some cosmetic changes to the interior due to the installation process but these were covered well and the end result looks good. My son really likes having his own room, he especially likes the carpet choice. Mr. Hoffman made little adjustments on the final walk through to ensure that we were completely satisfied with the result. The project started on time, but was significantly delayed in final completion (planned completion was end of August, was finally finished mid November). The additional waterproofing led to a 3 week delay from the original timeline, but the remaining time delay was mostly due to conflicting contractor and subcontractor projects. Once early September came, the project moved very slowly and we felt we frequently needed to remind people of tasks that still to happen. However, the painters in particular came in on weekends to finish in an effort to make up extra time. In addition, when we set hard deadlines (moving all furniture back into basement) they were able to meet these. Overall the project turned out very nicely and we are pleased with our new basement!
Description of Work: Remodeled unfinished basement, cosmetic remodel to upstairs bedroom (conversion from office to bedroom), installation of new window in bedroom.

It is always wise to get three quotes, especially if you are not sure how to proceed with a project as large as the one you are considering. In the end, all the truly qualified remodelers will have similar prices. The one that shares your vision and that you feel most understands your objectives is the best one to go with.

Response from Hoffman Construction Co Inc
The client seems to have an exceptionally selective memory. He was late for our appointment. Before we entered the house, I asked him I should remove my shoes, as I do with all clients. If there were any messes, they were from other sources. I spent over an hour working with him to see how we could accomplish his goals given that the bath was off the kitchen and I wanted to make sure anything we did to the bath coordinated with any future remodeling that might happen to the kitchen. The house is over 135 years old and has a lot of old house problems. He essentially wanted to join two rooms together to create a four piece bath. I asked that we take lunch and then come back to do the measuring because it was complicated and I wanted to make sure the design truly worked when I was finished. He agreed because he had an appointment he needed to make. We agreed on a return time. He was again late. When I finished, I told him that we still need to establish a budget. I understood that he was not ready for a second meeting until the end of December or early January but I told him I would need to contact him to see if the budget number was in line with his expectations. He agreed. He would not return my calls or emails. Finally he emailed me to tell me that I bothered him too much and that they did not want my services. My response was that if he could not respond to a simple question about budget that had been agreed to, then I was probably not the contractor he was looking for. He then posted this review on Angie's List.

All I can say is that these are wonderful clients. They had a clear idea what they wanted to accomplish and they were a pleasure to serve. A personal observation is that the slab of granite they chose for their counters was excellent. It truly took the design to the next level. I would give them an "A" on Angie's List, if such a thing existed for rating clients.

At Hoffman Construction we value our relationships with our clients. The basis of a positive relationship is clear communication. This communication is, in turn, the basis of a successful project. However, this communication has to go both ways. We stand behind our work. If Mr. [Member name removed] wants to go on Angie’s List and give us a straight “F” rating, for whatever reason, that is his prerogative. But it is neither fair nor accurate. We will gladly supply any potential client with a list of references if they wish to learn more about us.

After speaking with my wife (and seeing the great ratings on Angie's List), we were happy to have Hoffman Construction fix our broken pantry. Not only did they do a great job, they actually ended up charging us less than they quoted us, due to the fact that they finished the project earlier than expected. Truly a company with integrity!
