We had a back corner of our yard that was just unusable due to shade and overgrowth of a tree. We decided that we wanted to salvage it by putting a patio in that location, but that is all we knew. Jeff and his crew were very professional. They showed up for the estimate promptly on time, took a look at the situation, and had all sorts of ideas on what we could do with the area. He was able to work with me, within my budget, and presented a written quote via email the same day. The job took less than a day. They even had to move part of the fence that surrounds my yard, but replaced it as if they had never had to move it in the first place. They also trimmed back the tree. The end result is a beautiful, flat, and level paving stone patio, and a wide open area for us to enjoy. The quote was to-the-penny accurate, and the job was a quality job. Time to buy some patio furniture!
Description of Work: 12' x 15' paving stone patio installed. Also, trimmed tree.

Gaining Ground Landscaping completely ROCKS! If you are debating on a company to hire to take on a project at your house, take my word for it and just hire them. My wife and I spent a very long summer working with a general contractor on our roof and siding and had admittedly grown a little jaded about the construction business as a whole, but Jeff Heinz and his company Gaining Ground Landscaping showed us the brighter side. Not only did they do an incredible and efficient job on our projects, but they were very reasonably priced. We hired them to build a paver walkway along our existing driveway, excavate and fill a gravel pad for our hot tub in the backyard *and* dig a large hole for a future water-feature. After they arrived to start work, I asked if they could pick up some extra limestone gravel to use in the water-feature (of course, I said I'd reimburse them) and if they would help me to move the hot tub onto its new base. I also asked if they would dig an extra 3'x3' hole in my front yard to accommodate some plants I hadn't been able to put in the ground over the summer. They agreed to all of these "extras" without complaint, and ultimately didn't charge me an additional penny! Not only that, but they spent extra time adjusting my hot tub to make sure it was placed to our specifications (in other words, they moved it twice). I've never been happier working with a company on a home improvement project than I was with Gaining Ground and I recommend them without reservation.
Description of Work: New driveway-quality paver walkway set next to driveway (4'x12') + gravel base for hot tub in backyard (9'x9'). Also 4'x4' base dug for water feature (3 feet deep).

It went great! Jeff (the owner) emailed me back right away and came out the following Saturday to give us a quote and take a look at the space. He also was very upfront with me about what pavers cost per SF (a approx range) and was even going to give me the name of a stamped concrete guy in case pavers were out of our budget! He got a drawing/estimate within the time frame he promised and always responded to my emails and questions in a very timely manner. He was patient with us as we made our decision. I also had him give us a quote for various landscaping, which he did at no cost (once we booked him for the patio). They started the patio on a Monday and were done on Thursday. Each night they left the area clean and tidy and when they left for good, they did the same. The patio is beautiful and just what we wanted. We hope to use Jeff for some landscaping next summer!
Description of Work: Gaining Ground installed a 250 square foot paver patio using tumbled brussels block by Unilock as well as a set of paver stairs.

I did not have drawings. They were very patient, as we used up many cans of marking paint to find the look I wanted. They were also patient when I made changes/additions in the middle of their work. Get a quote up front, but understand that making changes will affect their time and your price. They were VERY fair about pricing, and price changes. Much of their work had to be coordinated to match with other contractors, carpentors and masons. They were very polite, accomodating, and adjusted to work easily with the other personalities. Really good guys! My project were spread over 2 years. They were very honest and accomodated me when possible with their work schedule. NO COMPLAINTS!!
Description of Work: Laid out, excavated, installed, and finish sealed 2 large patios (1 rectangular but under deck, working around posts; the other tailored with curved edges from deck steps to outdoor firplace), 1 long curved front entrance walkway, and 3-4 retaining walls (2 in front -150 ft x 2-3 ft high - for asthetic landscaping; 1 in back 100 ft x 4ft high; accent walls around and as part of a pond). Since pallets of stones are heavy, carefully consider their placement ahead of delivery. They move the pallets around with a bobcat machine, which can impact your surrounding landscaping or grass, especially if it soft or you get rain. They were extremely considerate on this point! Be around and check in with them, as sometimes I didn't communicate very well the ideas in my head and did not provide a drawing. Also, this is heavy work - but they maintained a steady work pace.
