This is the second time I have used Pat for home repairs. He has responded quickly to my call and has given me accurate estimates. He has gone out of his way to save me money where it can be saved without compromising quality. The work has been done in a timely manner and has looked great. He is professional and has a great sense of humor. I plan to use him again when I have additional repairs.
Description of Work: Pat did a number of repairs for me. He installed a new kitchen light fixture and rewired the electrical box. He secured siding on my garage. He filled a crack in my foundation. He resurfaced and caulked my bathtub and replaced a glass shower door. He also rebuilt a broken door frame and fixed the door jam.

One of the comments on Angie's List is that Pat Ashby did not timely call a man back to arrange for an estimate. I contacted Pat on a Sunday evening, and the next Monday morning (less than 24 hours latter) Pat had returned my call AND he came to look at the job and give me an estimate of the project cost. Throughout the project, Pat let me know when he would be working on this and when he would not be working (e.g., to let something properly cure). He started the project when he said he would and he was always in communication with me about the work schedule so I would know what to expect and could plan my own schedule. One of the other comments that I had read about Pat Ashby on Angie's List was that he was extremely meticulous about his work (I believe the word the other person used was "anal"). I saw this comment as extremely positive and it influenced my decision to call Pat for an estimate. Frankly, after I met Pat and he explained what was involved, I did not bother getting another estimate. Pat demonstrated from the beginning through to the conclusion of the job he was meticulous. He started the job when he said he would do it. And, as the project commenced, he saw that there was more to it than he may have estimated--due to the original contractor's extremely poor work. Ripping out the old was a messy job, but Pat took all the precautions he could to contain the dust and debris that needed to be disposed of as he proceeded. Even though the drainage of the shower was not an issue (at least I did not know whether it was an issue), right off the bat, he had to be certain the shower was going to drain properly and he insisted on crawling through the crawl space in the basement under the shower floor to see how the drain was connected and to be certain the water was not just flowing into the crawl space without proper drain pipes taking the water where it should be drained. He did not have to do this, but he did not want to get started and assume proper drainage if I had this as problem also--and he was suspicious because of what he saw from the inside of my shower floor. After he saw the drain was correctly installed underneath the shower floor, he still cleaned out the drain for me. He then proceeded to custom re-build the shower--and as I saw Pat proceed, I can tell you that he does not cut corners or do anything that he would not do if this were something he was doing for himself in his own home--that is how I felt at all times. It was a huge benefit to me that I was able to work at home when Pat was doing his work, so I could see first hand what all was being done (for my benefit) and the hours of hard work that Pat was putting in to do the job right. I now know how a shower should be built, and I know I have an incredibly wonderful shower in my master bath that has now been rebuilt to perfection. I just love it!! He is an incredibly fine craftsmen who knows how to do the job right and he demonstrated to me that he will only do the job the right way. He also just called to be certain that I am happy and have no problem with the shower now that it is done. I cannot say enough positive and good things about Pat Ashby.
Description of Work: I had an unusual;y large shower in my master bath that had a built in seat that was leaking. I was not certain what the extent of the project would be, but I was unable to use the shower until the shower was repaired. At the time Pat Ashby came to review the shower and provide an estimate, he was able to easily tear out tile with his hands, and it was revealed that the shower was not built by the original builder as it should have been built--tile was placed up against ordinary drywall and there was a serious mold problem as well. It was not just the tiled seat that was a problem but also the surrounding walls of the shower. A substantial portion of the shower had to torn out so that all of the area that was affected with mold was completely removed and replaced. Basically, Pat had to replace the foundational structure of the shower. This was a difficult job because (my view) the original builder had done a substandard job that should never have passed inspection. Everything Pat did, had to be custom cut on the site, and it took a skilled craftsman to do this work properly Pat explained what he had to do as he went along, and I was able to see his reconstruction as it progressed. Basically, the shower had to be completely redone. When I saw with my own eyes what Pat had to do to rebuild the shower so it would not leak--all the material he used and what he had to do before he even commenced laying tile, I was very thankful I had an extremely skilled contractor/craftsman who knew what he was doing and took pride in his work--rebuilding the shower so it would NEVER leak again. Pat was also extremely considerate of how the shower would look when finished and took time to find a ready supply of tile to match my existing tile in the bathroom and to find a granite slab for the shower seat that would also bring everything together from a decorating standpoint. He also did a an extra item he saw needed to be done that was not involved in this shower rebuild project (flooring in another bath had come up), and without charging extra he took care of this until I can completely redo this floor (which I intend to do).

This told me that Pat was an honest guy, not looking to make a buck, but to provide superior service and build loyal clients. I will definitely call him with my next home project.
Description of Work: I called Ashby's for an estimate on installation of an electric heater in my garage. Pat asked me a number of questions, and then told me that it might be cost prohibitive to do what I was asking. He then made a suggestion on an alternative which I followed. This told me that Pat was an honest guy, not looking to make a buck, but to provide superior service and build loyal clients. I will definitely call him with my next home project.

The jobs went very well from our point of view. Work began in early December and spanned the holiday season, and Pat was willing and able to work throughout this period with minimal disruption. We had informed him that we had no holiday guests to accommodate this year, so he had ability to spend the time to get the work done fully to our satisfaction with no time constraints imposed by us. The biggest challenge by far in the 2 jobs related to matching the swirl patterned textured ceilings that we have throughout the house. I should state up front that we have not been overly satisfied with the work of 2 prior contractors who have also done swirled ceiling repair/replacement elsewhere in the house, so we have come to realize this is a skill that is tough to master. Pat assured us that he had prior experience with this type ceiling, however we were not satisfied with Pat's initial texturing of the ceiling in the half bath, mainly due to the fact that he didn't match the pattern that had been used originally throughout the house. We asked him to redo the ceiling in the half bath, which he did, ultimately several times. On one or two occasions the redoing was at Pat's own initiative because he was not satisfied with his results on those occasions. We finally reached a point where we accepted the result, and at that point the half bath job was signed off and we authorized him to begin the upstairs guest bath. I should mention that in all other aspects, Pat really knew his stuff and did a great job. The porcelain tile floor in particular stands out as a truly exceptional job and we are very strongly leaning toward having him come back to remodel our master bath, which will include significant tile work. In doing the 2 toilet replacements he also did a great job reworking the flanges on the floor openings to minimize chance of any water leakage into the subfloor. The guest bath presented no major issues and proceeded well. In this room with 2 large sections of new drywall ceiling installed, we would again ask Pat to do the swirled ceiling and we were more than a little nervous about this, with it being a larger bathroom and all. We realized we could have opted for a flat ceiling which would have been extremely easy on both ourselves and Pat, yet Pat kept assuring us that he'd learned from his mistakes while doing the ceiling in the half bath and was anxious to tackle this one. We agreed that he would have one shot to do the swirled ceiling to our satisfaction, otherwise we would have him make the ceiling flat. When the time came to texture the ceiling, Pat absolutely NAILED it -- it turned out just lovely and we were so thrilled that my wife asked him if he could redo the half bath ceiling ONE MORE TIME so it would look as lovely as this one. Since we had already accepted his prior (but not perfect) work on the half bath ceiling, we worked out an additional payment scheme for the final redo of the that ceiling. Pat produced a much improved result there, and we feel that the additional payment was money well spent in terms of how both those ceilings now look. I have dwelled upon the matter of the ceilings to emphasize that Pat spent a LOT more time with us than he had bargained for (the jobs were contracted at fixed prices), yet he remained totally committed to making us happy with his work, and in the process admitted to learning a great deal for use on future jobs. As a final comment regarding Pat's work, he does a very good job of explaining pros and cons and getting customer input whenever there are decisions to be made, so this goes a long way toward eliminating any bad surprises. He also cleans up very well and is careful about dust and debris not getting outside of the immediate work areas. We plan to have Pat Ashby back in warmer weather for the initially discussed exterior repairs, and almost certainly for additional interior work.
Description of Work: We initially contacted Pat Ashby regarding an issue with exterior water damage, however this was quite late in the fall and per Pat's advice we decided to postpone these repairs until spring so we could first complete some roof repairs to better protect suspect areas from leakage due to winter snow and ice. On the same visit we also discussed several potential interior projects. From Angie's List information and reviews we knew Pat was qualified to take on these projects. We initially hired Pat to remodel a half bath/entry/laundry room area, with work to include removal of a soffit plus drywall replacement and finishing of walls and ceiling in the half bath, replacement of a laundry room utility sink, replacement of a toilet, installing new lighting and fan, a new tile backsplash, and replacement of a tile floor throughout the entire area, and painting of the half bath and laundry room. Upon completion of this job, we again hired Pat to remodel an upstairs guest bathroom, with work to include removal of 2 soffits plus drywall replacement and finishing of walls and ceiling, raising an existing shower head, replacement of a toilet, installing new lighting and fan, and priming/painting walls. During the course of these jobs, Pat also agreed to perform a number of small jobs, including installation of a basement utility sink and minor drywall repair.

Pat did an excellent job. He arrived on time, gave a great quote (about 1/4 the price of another local A-rated Angie's List company), and did a great job. He also spent a lot of time giving us tips on our basement remodel, which was very helpful since we're trying to do it ourselves. Pat seems to be very trustworthy, and we plan on calling him first for any future needs that's within his specialties.
Description of Work: We are remodeling our basement, and our existing basement plumbing was too low for our planned ceilings. Pat raised the plumbing up to the height we needed. He also re-routed one bathroom pipe to make it drain better.

Pat was just amazing. I had a lot of damage from a leak under my tub and toilet. I was extremely thankful to have someone who could handle the mold, plumbing, floor replacement, drywall, painting, ceramic tile and more. I strongly recommend him, especially for a project where you don't know what all you are getting into.
Description of Work: In his third visit for me, Pat fixed several more items in the bathroom. I did not think he would be able to match the tile in the bathroom, but he found the tile to do a beautiful job. He installed the tile, painted the drywall, tore up the heavily damaged floor for me, replaced the flooring, and fixed all the creaking in the floor. He also built a space saver into the bathroom. He did so much work.

I am sorry if there was some confusion with not giving a written quote.I sometimes give a ballpark verbal quote until I get more specific info on material requirements. As this may drastically change the price point of the job in question. As far as the pulling permit, those things are dependent on the job.If permits are needed on a job ,I do have them pulled. And I do all my work to code.If I did not,I would be out of business and or in jail.I do appoligize for the confusion on this issue.

Pat has high standards of craftsmanship and is very meticulous. His wide experience in remodeling allows him to anticipate and suggest solutions to problems. He provided us with daily progress reports, always kept us in the loop and sought our opinion and feedback on his work. Pat was always very responsive to our concerns. For example, our old ceiling had some watermarks and we were concerned that they would reoccur after the new painting. Pat investigated and determined that the watermarks were caused by the sweating of some water pipes. He suggested installing insulating sleeving around the water pipes, which would avoid future watermarks. Before he left every evening, Pat put away his tools, cleaned up the construction debris and left the work area clean and as usable as possible. He is responsible and honest, which we appreciate very much. He completed what he committed to and more and we are very pleased with the results. We definitely would hire Pat again.
Description of Work: Pat remodeled the kitchen ceiling and did other updates in the kitchen and hallway, including new ceiling drywall, new lighting in kitchen and hallway, relocating pipes and wiring in kitchen ceiling, installing insulation around water pipes and insulation to deaden sound from the rooms upstairs, updating wiring and installing new switches, relocating and re-sizing kitchen cabinets and revitalizing their wood surfaces, installing new wood decorative supports for a long bar top counter, installing gas and electric for new range, installing new venting for over-the-range microwave, and installing new microwave. Pat and his assistant also primed and painted the walls and ceiling of the family room, kitchen and hallway. Painting the ceiling required him to removal the old popcorn finish.
The lighting improvement went great. The new lights are on 3 separate switches with dimmers and were installed symmetrically, which was tricky given our basement configuration. Because Patrick is meticulous, he also installed two new switches, outlets and added more lights to our dimly lit furnace room and crawl space, and fixed a step on our basement stairs. He also installed a wall mount for our TV and then set the TV on the mount. All these extras were done within the original estimate for the basement lighting. Patrick is great at spotting how things can be improved and made safer. His suggestions are always right on point.
Description of Work: We had excellent work from Patrick before, so we hired him to update our lighting in our finished basement. Our house was built in 1987 and we had an unappealing mix of fluorescent lights and track lighting in our basement. Patrick removed the lights and installed 18 can ceiling lights w/ the new energy efficient bulbs. The basement now looks more up to date.

The price did not include the parts. He was able to find some problems that existed from the building of the house and fixed those properly. I used to be in the industry. He is the only guy that I continue to marvel at the work he did. His knowledge and professionalism is great. He was always up on what was going on. He does have the typical issues as a sole-proprietor concerning new work versus existing work. But I have been in the industry so that did not bother me, like when he took a 2 hour lunch to go look at new work. I would hire him any day or time.

We contacted Ashby to have him come out for an estimate on repairing (and possibly renovating) our master bath shower. He arrived on time the same day! But he wasn't very professional. When he showed up he didn't have any workmen's "booties" (the little plastic/cloth shoe covers) for his dirty boots. He didn't offer to take his boots off and we didn't ask (my mistake!). He didn't give us a written estimate but gave us a round number that he said he would put on paper when we decided to go with him for the job. His verbal estimate when he was at our home was about $5 - 7,000 HIGHER than the other 4 estimates that we received. He wanted to do all this extra work to our shower and we kept redirecting him back to the work we acutally wanted done but he kept talking about much more expensive work he could do. We didn't seem to "connect" or be on the same page. He was kind of gruff and he said he'd get back to us. A week later he called to tell my husband that his brother died (too personal?) and he didn't offer us a written estimate at any time. Great lack of professionalism.
Description of Work: We had no work done but we would not recommend Ashby Home repair due to the experience we had.

I do not understand the reasoning for the member's write up. I always ask if I should remove my shoes, even when it is dry outside like it was the day I visited the member's home.If I had soiled her flooring, I would have offered to have it cleaned at my expence. And as it turned out, the member's had already started the demo work on the shower, and having no shoes on would have caused possible injury to my feet. I did not and could not give a set estimate with out knowing the exact scope of work to be done. I had told them that the work could go from $600 for a quickie repair or up to and or beyond $9000 for a full bath remodel. And that depends on what grade of material is used. They did give me a sample of the existing tile. After several trips to venders to see if it was still being manufactured, I found it was unavailable. After a couple of attempts to contact the member, I finally was able to speak to the husband to let him know about the status of the existing tile. I did tell him that it would take more time to work up a proper estimate with an agreement as to the actual scope of the work to be bid on. And I did tell him that my brother had just passed away and that family members were coming into town for his funeral service. This would slow down the process for obvious reasons. The member seemed very understanding of this and told me to call back when I was ready to continue the process. After taking care of my family business, I tried several times to contact the members to resume with the business at hand with no return phone calls. When I finally got the member on the phone, she seemed agitated and told me that they would not need my services and hung up on me. Through all this ,I stayed polite and respectful, as my reputation means everything to me. Previous of my visit to the member's home I had recently suffered several family losses. And although I may not have been my jovial self, I was polite and acted in a business like manner. My brother passed early Sept. A couple of days after my visit to the member's household. If you read all my other write ups,you will see that I took very good care of my customers and I am very fussy about keeping the work and surrounding areas clean. I will always continue to give my customers the best work possible for a price that will insure that it is done properly while suiting their future needs. Thank you kindly for your consideration.

Pat Ashby took care of the demo, repair of existing plumbing, installation of new shower and fixtures, installation of ceramic tile and shower door. He cleaned up each day to my satisfaction.
Description of Work: Pat Ashby remodeled my a guest bathroom after we moved into a new house. He is a perfectionist and did a fantastic job. We've used Pat in the past on other remodels and couldn't be happier. I can't attest to how he compares price-wise with others. I don't use others. I use Pat Ashby because I want a sure thing.
Relying on Angie's List, we got 3 estimates for our bathroom remodel. We are almost done with remodeling throughout our 23 year old house. Our master bathroom was near the last to be done. Pat Ashby, owner of Ashby Home Repair, had a good idea of what we wanted and offered an estimate within our budget of $12000 to $14000. The redesign was completely Pat's vision on how to improve the bathroom layout and make the space more attractive and functional. This was an important and surprising aspect of the job, because we were thinking only about replacing the old with new, and not a redesign. Pat's redesign demonstrates that Pat is at the top of his craft. There was nothing that came up during the project that Pat didn't have a solution or a better idea. Most importantly, Pat was very experienced in how to do work in the most cost effective way, without cutting corners, or doing anything less than first rate, quality work every step along the way. After the redesign, Pat helped us pick out the materials. He was instrumental in making sure our selection of fixtures, cabinets and tile complemented and matched with each other. For example, one ceramic tile we liked on its own, looked awful with the cabinet color we picked out. We went with a different tile selection that matched. Pat is also very knowledgeable about styles and what trends will remain popular in bathroom design. Moving on to the actual work, things went great. During the initial tear out stage, there was much dust that could not be avoided. Since we suffer from allergies, Pat made sure our bed and furnishings were kept covered. More importantly, Pat installed the new doors first and kept them closed, so that the dust would not reach our bedroom too much. He did this even though it was hot and not comfortable to him. Each day Pat would ask if we had any concerns and genuinely wanted to know if we were happy with the progress being made. With regard to progress, the job took about a month and a half. Given how extensive the project was, this was what we expected. Important to us, Pat showed up every weekday, except for the long Memorial Day weekend. Towards the end, Pat also worked two Saturdays, just to keep things on track. Any delays were caused by unexpected things that turned up after the tear out. For example, Pat had to solve the unexpected problem of our very uneven shower floor. It had a slant of almost 3/4th of an inch. Finally, every workday ended with a good vacuuming and clean up of the work area so that our bedroom would be minimally affected. The end result is that we have an absolutely stunning and beautiful master bathroom. There is no doubt whatsoever we received the most value for our money. Our investment return on our upgraded bathroom will be high, given what we spent. And we owe that to Pat's abilities and experience which made it happen. Finally, it was important that we hired someone that we felt comfortable having in our home for an extended period of time. Pat is such a person. He is very conscientious and polite as well as being meticulous in his work. He is a true craftsman who takes pride in his work. As we got to know each other, he has many other outside interests that added to his creativity and expertise in this area.
Description of Work: Complete tear out, redesign and remodel of a 23 year old bathroom, vanity area and closet off a master bedroom. Old vanity area was directly open to bedroom. Old toilet and shower were to the left side of the vanity, accessed by narrow interior door. Old walk in closet was on the right side of vanity area, without any door at all. Redesign included separating the vanity/shower area from the bedroom with its own door off the bedroom. A narrow shower area door was removed and the opening was expanded 6 inches, creating a more open space. Two existing, practically unnecessary soffits were removed creating a higher ceiling in the vanity area, as well as much more head room in the shower. The existing closet entrance in the vanity area was closed off and finished with a new wall. A new closet doorway was relocated and installed on the bedroom side wall. The new closet configuration created much more usable closet space. The redesign included relocation of new water supply lines and electric service lines and boxes. All new materials included ceramic tile shower walls, floor, cove base, and vanity backsplash, with decorative tilework throughout. Shower included new bench seat with marble top, brushed nickel fixtures, clear glass shower doors and new exhaust fan. New toilet has a higher seat and longer bowl. A new cabinet was installed above the toilet. New vanity area now has double sinks, brushed nickel gooseneck faucets, granite countertop, double mirrors, new light fixtures as well as overhead lighting. Vanity countertop was raised to a more comfortable height. Closet redesign included new upgraded organizer. Everything removed was hauled away neatly and promptly.

He gave me an description of the work that would need to be done, but also reported that it was outside the scope of his usual business - and made recommendations regarding alternate companies that would be helpful to me. He happened to notice another more serious problem in the house, and pointed out that we really needed further advice (from an engineer) regarding THAT issue. He was right - we have a structural issue that we need to deal with. I greatly appreciated his rapid response to phone calls, coming to provide an estimate, and follow-up advice. I was impressed that his judgement of our structural situation was on the mark, and that he was honest regarding not having the appropriate tools/manpower to do the bigger "structural" job.
Description of Work: I asked Pat to provide an estimate for some water-damage ceiling repair work.

Response from Ashby Home Repair
I was happy to have hopefully saved her the misery of a section of her home collapsing due to a builder who obviously cut corners when the addition was put in.

Pat thoroughly explains what needs to be done (extensive explanations are off the clock.) He is very personable, has a great work ethic and values quality and craftmanship over a temporary quick cosmetic fix. His prices were reasonable; I've used other handymen for the same rate or more and gotten shabby work. I will definitely be calling Pat Ashby again for home repair/replacement services in the future.
Description of Work: I asked Pat to work through a list of repairs to get my home ready for sale. He installed new outside, hall and dining room lights, got my gas stove working, fixed some plumbing leaks and removed old tile and greenboard from the lower half of my shower. He cleaned out the damaged area, inserted cement board, and installed tile and cleaned up the grout. In order to minimize expenses, he was able to use new tile to redesign the tile pattern in the area that was being repaired (the existing tile was no longer available to purchase) The new design blends beautifully into the existing pattern. He helped me with lots of other small home repairs that needed fixing (door lock, replacement of light switch etc.)

Did an excellent job...grout lines look exceptional. He's very meticulous and won't rush a job just to get it done. He checked in w/ us everyday to let us know the progress and communicated any challenges he ran into along the way. He also noticed that our refrigerator wasn't level and leveled that for us along with replacing several starters in our under cabinet lighting. He's very thorough and I'd recommend him to anyone looking for an estimate on a bathroom rennovation.
Description of Work: Pat replaced our tub surround with tile.
