They are a really good company. When you call for an appointment they are very good to meet my schedule. I have had a few questions about our new system, the office staff works to make sure my question is answered. Chris installed our new heatpump system about 5 years ago, and he continues to do the regular maintenance on it. He does a great job. He calls when he is on his way. He does a very thorough job making sure our system stays running properly. He is also just an all around really nice guy.
Description of Work: A repair and regular maintenance. The price noted in the next question was for both services.

They've been servicing my system on a contract ever since, and Mr. Zimmer is fabulous. I've been very satisfied with them, and I would most definitely put them into your system. For price, for what I got I would give them an A. I got a deluxe system.
Description of Work: They replaced my entire HVAC system. I had a heat pump, and it died. I replaced the entire heat pump and AC, inside and outside units, and also added a humidifier, and it was a highly efficient unit, a super efficient unit, plus I got one of the super duper electronic thermostats with connection to the internet and that was included.

Great! They worked with our holiday and travel schedule. The timing was imperative as cracks had developed in our heat exchanger. Our furnace was not "red tagged", but we wanted to take care of the problem immediately. They replaced our aging system in a timely and professional manner. They even moved the AC condenser to a new location for us. It took 2 days, but we had heat the first night. Yes we would hire them again.

Salesman Chris T. was very friendly, professional and knowledgeable. Dave led the install and was courteous and obviously skilled at his trade. We were extremely pleased with his work ethic and attention to detail. Zach assisted on the install and, although being very quiet and reserved, was very courteous and hard-working also. It did take some time and an extra visit by the service manager, Steve, to get the systems settings correct for our comfort. We feel confident that we have a quality system. Though it is an expensive endeavor we feel our money was well spent with Zimmer and have confidence they will maintain our system for many years of efficient heating and cooling to come.

Chris was always here at the time he said he would be available. His team of technicians were outstanding. Their arrival was within a few minutes of the quoted time and if they were a few minutes late it was because they were picking up additional items they needed that day. The two of them knew exactly what they were doing. I couldn't be more impressed. They put down pads as it was raining and wore booties on their shoes to make sure they did not track soil into the house. They worked non stop and were so polite. In fact, from the first day, I felt comfortable enough to leave them in the home by themselves as i ran errands. They started on Monday and completed the work on Thursday. They cleaned up each day and took their garbage with them. I can't emphasize how professional they were. If I had questions while they were installing they took time to answer them. Even though Chris quoted the first floor, I chose to wait till this fall/winter to have a new install until we decided on more remodeling on the first floor. We will be having them come back to install the first floor with the same system. As far as the Mitsubishi they installed...it is whisper quiet, you cannot hear it run at all which is amazing. Even standing right by the system you can feel the air but cannot hear the sound or air coming out. I highly recommend this product. Does it sound expensive? Probably to most folks but the satisfaction and cool air it has brought to us has been amazing. The electric bill has been cut in almost half over the summer compared to last year. The efficiency is outstanding. It will be interesting to see how the winter bill is. I'm anxious to have the first floor installed and yes it will be about the same additional cost but I will update you when they return to do this. I'm just indecisive because of possible additional remodeling or addition.
Description of Work: Chris Zimmer worked with us to provide the Mitsubishi split zone Heating/Air for our 2nd floor. He came over a couple times to discuss our options and to answer questions we had. Our home had never had ductwork nor air on the 2nd level except for window A/C and was built in about 1951 with plaster walls. He advised to keep our gas boiler/hot water heating and use the Mitsubishi as a supplement or as energy efficient as it is it is..it might be more efficient to utilize it in the three rooms with their different zones during the winter months. He measured and suggested the best options for the install through the cubby storage area but always gave us the opportunity to ask questions and make suggestions. He thoroughly knew the product and was very respectful in the way he presented the product to us.

Service was punctual, professional and the service people even found/eliminated an old unnecessary duct left from a previous renovation. They did more than replace our unit, they helped up figure out how to have our complex system of 3 AC systems and 2 heating sources function more consistently for us. I greatly appreciate the thought that went into finding solutions to our challenges.

My husband and I had a problem whereby our AC was not cooling down the house. I called Zimmer and had someone scheduled to come the same day. The service technician took a look at our outdoor unit and said that he thinks the compressor is bad since it was loud and there was kind of a rattling sound. He also used gauges and said there was a temperature problem. He also looked at the inside unit and said the piston might not be the right kind. We expressed concern that the problem might still not be fixed even if we were to replace the compressor since we also had a problem with airflow. He told us that we would then go from there if changing the compressor doesn't fix the problem. He stated that his solution was his best guess and we can accept his diagnosis or not. This is not good enough for us. We are not going to spend about $1000 for a fix that might or might not work. I asked him if it is possible that the speed of the blower is not correct and if that might be why airflow is not good. I asked him if he could check it so we can know what else is wrong. He refused to look at the blower and stated that he would only look at it when they come for repairs. This is not okay. We paid for him to do a diagnosis and we feel that his diagnosis was incomplete. We feel that he should at least have addressed our concerns that it might not be the compressor that is causing the problem. He also removed the taping around the duct cover to look at the evaporator coils and was going to leave without replacing the tape. The tape was only replaced when we requested that he do so. Furthermore, when we called to ask him to send us an email with a detailed quote, he refused to do so. We mentioned that we want it in case we ever wanted to submit it to our warranty company (highly unlikely) and he got defensive and said that Zimmer doesn't deal with warranty companies. He didn't really listen. We have had work done before, paid for by us to the service provider, and gotten reimbursed by the warranty company. Furthermore, the paperwork he gave us when he left states "You have the right to a written estimate if the work exceeds $25", which clearly is not true. He stated that they "don't break down the price for anybody" when we asked for them to break down the costs. The technician also told us that we would need 7 pounds of freon for our 2 ton unit. We called the manufacturer who told us the maximum capacity of refrigerant for the unit is 4.7 but after accounting for other things, the maximum would at most be 5 pounds. We were going to be charged for around 2 more pounds of freon that our system didn't need. Overall, we were disappointed. Even though the technician could have been right about the problem, we do not feel confident about his diagnosis since he didn't address our concerns about airflow and wanted to give us more refrigerant than we would have needed. The company has a promise for a written estimate on the receipt for our diagnosis, but this was never provided. We paid over eighty dollars for a technician to come out and guess what was wrong, refuse to look at our blower, and refuse to honor their stated promise for a written quote.

Response from Zimmer Heating & Cooling
Unfortunately this situation can happen when an A/c unit was not installed by a professional hvac company a little over a year ago. A little history my service tech was informed when visiting the home. The outdoor unit was installed without replacing the indoor evaporator coil being replaced at the same time. This causes compressor pre-mature failure. The evaporator coil was replaced a few weeks ago by another company. We were the 5th company asked to diagnose the problem since the evaporator coil was replaced. There are several issues that need addressing. The main issue is the compressor. The noise and pressure fluctuation is from non-condensables' in the refrigeration circuit. The refrigeration circuit was not properly evacuated and no refrigerant filter drier was installed. A flat rate estimate was given via e-mail per the owners request . With the situation at hand, the compressor is most probably the beginning of finding other problems. Air flow could be a problem, but without a properly running compressor?? It would only be a guess on the airflow at that time. Speeding up or slowing down the blower won't change the problem at hand. Service estimates are given in a flat rate pricing model. Cost of labor, materials etc. are included in the flat rate for this repair. We do not break down the labor and materials to the customer. The owner stated we were going to use too much refrigerant. The technician was basing the amount off of memory. In fact the amount was within a few ounces of the manufacturers recommendations in the estimate. Yes you have a right to an estimate if the work excede $25. We e-mailed it to the owner. The $85 diagnostic fee was the initial cost to come out and find out the problem or problems;.which in this case were many; and the owner accepted the initial dignostic fee. This is an unfortunate situation for this owner and others who get caught in the middle of an unprofessional installation. Basic rules of the trade were not followed initially. I would gladly come out on my own time to see if I can help at the owners request. Chris Zimmer President

I got the idea from the Angie's List magazine to move my heating/cooling ducts before refinishing the basement. I called Zimmer for a estimate. They never called back, so after a few days I called a second time. They had a record of my call, but that was all. So Dave H called back later and made an appointment to visit between 11:30 and noon. At 12:20 (!) he called me and said he would late (!). When he did show up he was very nice, seemed to understand what I wanted him to do. He promised to email me an estimate no later than 2 days later. Well, here it is 4 days later and still no response. Not that it matters, because if you tell me, a brand new customer, 3 times like this that you do not care about me at all, there is not much to convince me hire you for any reason.

At first I have to say we were disappointed because we thought the service man that Zimmer provided fixed of what we and he thought was the problem, but that wasn't the case. We paid for a service and they did not deliver the first time and to be honest it was hard to decide what the problem was, but they came through so far the second visit after Jordan opened our boiler and fixed what seem to be an ill maintained ignition. We were not charged on the second visit becuase they did not fix the problem the first time. I am a man that appreciates fairness and strightforewardness so I will stay with Zimmer for any of my Heating or cooling problems. thanks and keep up the good work.

energy audit
 + -1 more
While Jerry was on time, nothing else about the so-called "energy audit" went as planned. As such, I've contacted another energy audit company (listed here on Angie's List) because I have absolutely no faith in Jerry or his recommendations. Here's what he didn't do: 1) go into the attic, claiming that the attic insulation kept him from doing so [clearly didn't want to be bothered]; 2) even bother to *look* into the huge 4 foot-high crawl space that is the base for my 12 x 14 kitchen & is a significant loss of energy; 3) check a single heating vent, even though I told him they had inadequate air flow; 4) do *any* exterior inspection of the house's foundation, etc. despite my telling him that it was a 140-year old house; 5) inspect a single door or window. Here's what he did: 1) test my propane stove's burner for drafts (about 3 minutes); 2) hock up a black framing device to the kitchen door, so he go blow a fan for less than 10 minutes; 3) use a ultra-red device on one wall and on my dog (Jerry is a bit odd, which is why I was anxious for him to leave my home & didn't point out all *he didn't do!" I wanted him gone!) 4) write 4 numbers/readings in his brochure; 5) tell me that he would provide a plan/details to Zimmer, even though I asked for the plan. What else did he do: 1) recommend that I have insulation blown into the crawl space that he didn't inspect, even though I explained that blown-n insulation wasn't ideal since the area contains *all* the kitchen's plumbing and electric; 2) recommend that I have insulation blown in (blow-in insulation) into brick walls. I pointed out that this recommendation was: A) contrary to anything I'd ever read about insulating brick homes; B) contrary to the explicit advice from Ray St. Clair and 3 other well-respected companies, who explicitly told me to never let anyone talk me into/sell me "blow-in" insulation for a brick house; C) contrary to the 3 architects/trades people who are intimately familiar with this house & have done or supervised excellent service provided by Ray St. Clair and other reputable companies. Since Jerry had no explanation whatsoever for items A-C above, he said he would follow up with me. I told him to provide me with scientific documentation that his "blown-in" insulation recommendation had any applicability to a brick house. He didn't even recommend a "vapor barrier," which is also problematic for brick homes. But while he was in the driveway, he pointed to the house wall in question, saying the bricks looked sturdy enough for blown-in insulation (a nonsense comment that I ignored.) BTW, the reason you don't blow-in insulation into brick is because brick must breathe. Obstructing brick's natural "breathing process" invites mold, moisture, etc. that damages brick...something any "energy auditor" would be expected to know. Then today (9/24) he telephoned to talk to me about doing the blown-in insulation for the brick wall. It was the audacity of this call, to try to sell me insulation, that inspired this review. I reminded him of points A-C above re: brick & blown-in insulation. I also recommended that he call reputable insulating companies, who would also gladly explain A-C to him also. As a long-time Zimmer customer who has written excellent reviews of Zimmer here on Angie's List, I decided it best to telephone Zimmer, making them aware that their recommended Jerry/Home Energy Services was a tarnish to their reputation and my otherwise excellent service from Zimmer. Owner Chris Zimmer has since left a voice message, telling me that he spoke w/Jerry and that they agree blown-in insulation isn't a solution for my house....but that he & Jerry had other ideas for my house, ideas I have absolutely no faith in nor will I purchase ... based on this experience and my having to explain to both Jerry (twice) and Chris (in an earlier e-mail) that you don't blow insulation into brick! I firmly believe that Jerry & Chris were set on "selling me" a bunch of bull, unlike my long-time & excellent Zimmer tech, Scott... who has never tried to "sell me" a thing. Zimmer should examine its formal business relationship and webpage linkage to Home Energy Services. Buyer beware!
Description of Work: On the recommendation of Zimmer owner, Mark Zimmer, I used Energy Home Services for an energy audit. This company is also recommended (with an active link) on Zimmer's website, which is my reason for writing this review for other Zimmer customers. Jerry, of Home Energy Services, was to perform an energy audit. As any reader of of Angie's List knows, energy audits typically take 2 to 3 hours. Jerry's "audit" of my 140 year old house took about 45 minutes.

Not sure how to respond to above posting. I called met with the owner a week later and re-performed the energy assessment. All went well and answered any question the owner had. I also provided referrals and estimates to the owner to decide what was best in the decision process to improve the efficiency of the home. I wish the owner would have discussed this with me before posting, but I understand. As always at Zimmer Heating; if there is a problem we want to take care of it. Prefer to have all services fixed the first time; but if not we will make sure the problem is solved. Thank you to the owner to allow our company to come back and address the problems above and satisfy her concerns and needs.
