From start to finish, Pete and his team made our masonry project an absolute breeze. Pete and his team are prompt, courteous, respectful, trustworthy, and extremely tidy. To top it all off - I'm not sure there is a more knowledgeable professional in the area when it comes to caring for old structures. Pete used the old techniques suitable for our old home that are sure to far outlast the many modern bandaids put in place before we bought the house. Pete was also extremely conscious of our budget. He never tried to recommend work that we didn't absolutely need and finished the job under-budget--all while providing services over and above what he had originally scoped. We are sure to use Pete again in the future.

I've learned over the years, as a result of engaging Pete for jobs on a vintage Hyde Park home, that his knowledge of and respect for the work and craft of masonry, plastering, painting and general carpentry, extend to care and protection of valuable objects within ones home. In my case this entailed documentation (provenance), including detailed photographing, safe packaging , transporting & storage of multiple works of art.
Description of Work: All the artwork in my home - paintings, antiques, ceramics etc, - needed to be moved to a temperature controlled storage facility and documented. This required exhaustive care in packing, transporting and handling, as well as understanding how to document and label items. This job was done over the course of a couple of weeks.

Peter was fantastic! Extremely knowledgeable, respectful of environment, very thorough, and everything looks amazing now. He even offered to fix something unrelated to the project and did so beautifully! Almost immediately after he left on the final day, a paint patch kept detaching itself, not on a spot where he fixed the crack, but where they had painted to make everything look nice and even. He came back the next day and had to fuss (possibly the issue was the result of a previous mistake made by another handy man) but would not quit until it looked perfect! He and his assistant were very thorough with cleaning at the end of each day, so we could function in the rooms at night. Peter is a very rare gift: someone deeply knowledgeable, honest, and professional. I cannot wait for the rest my ceilings to be fixed by him in the Spring. I highly recommend him!
Description of Work: There was a growing crack in my dining room ceiling, and in the kitchen, and several more still to be addressed.

A section of mahogany laminate surface on my piano was damaged and chipped by movers. Pete did an excellent job of mending the area with a piece of mahogany cut and fit into the damaged area so that the repair is unnoticeable. Can't ask for any better.

Peter Grady inspected, assessed and repaired a cracked ceiling area one floor under a bathtub. He cut open a small area of the ceiling and inspected the effected area with both his hands and a camera for an active water leak. He assessed for moisture damage to the structure due to what was just a condensation build-up and determined that there was none. He then repaired the area with limestone plaster; he left a painted finish that matches the existing ceiling texture so that there is no evidence of the previous crack. He does a great job of tarping the living area and leaving a clean worksite. Peter does first rate work with great communication and professionalism. Highly recommended.

Peter Grady is very knowledgeable and a consummate professional. With his moisture meter he was able to assess whether or not I had a moisture problem in the ceiling under a bathtub, as well as diagnose and repair plaster walls. He has made door repairs for me in the past and all of his work is to a high standard and beautiful finish. Additionally, I feel very comfortable having him and his team interact with my tenants and as well as having him do work in my own home; I would recommend him highly to anyone seeking the highest quality work and consistency.

We hired Pete to help us with a monster of a job. We bought a 1901 built house that had plaster textured walls and ceilings. We had a budget we wanted to stay under and Pete was so open to options to help us cut back on costs (allowing us to help with the work and clean up each night). He was able to tackle every issue that came up and even helped us paint at the end of the job when we were running out of time before we had to move in. I cannot say enough great things about him and his crew. They were friendly, polite, and courteous while working. We hired him back to help us with a chimney repair and some finishing work. He has even helped me with suggestions and tips for my DIY work that I screwed up. I am so happy we hired Pete and will recommend him to anyone who needs plaster work, painting, or anything he specializes in. 5 STARS!
Description of Work: Plaster Repair, Texture Removal, Brick/Chimney Repair
This is a long story but the details are important. We first spoke with Pete Grady in 2010 (or perhaps earlier). He came to our house for an estimate and, without even seeing our basement, ascertained that we had foundation issues. He did look through at what plaster work was needed but then said, "until you get your basement fixed, I'm not repairing your plaster as I would just be stealing your money as I would have to come back and re-do everything later after the basement is fixed and the house settles. Call me after you get your basement fixed and we will talk." We really appreciated his honesty. Fast forward to 2013 (basement fixed) and then to 2018 when we contacted Pete about several projects for 2019. We decided to move forward in 2019 (Year of the House) and Pete came out in February of this year to do a walk-through so that he could provide estimates. In order to help us with spacing the project out for our budget (and at our request), Pete and his team first did our living room bookcases, which are stunning. They were installed in May 2019. We then scheduled to have them work for most of July (estimate) on the rest of the house. They started on the project a few days early (good news) and worked for most of July. Every day, Pete alerted us as to their arrival time and, if we were not here when they left, he sent photos and texted when he was leaving. Each day, without fail, the team cleared the work area and cleaned the floors and workspace. Even as small requests or questions came up during the job, Pete and his team answered them with great patience and helpful knowledge/explanations. This project was completed on Monday, September 23 after the floor-to-ceiling dining room bookcases were installed the prior week and then painted/finished on the Monday. Again, the lateness of this finish date had nothing to do with Pete or his crew but, rather, was a result of us adding the bookcases on at the end of the other project to accommodate our budgeting. They were very large and it was a big job to build them after the other work was complete and in light of other jobs they were doing. We unconditionally, wholeheartedly recommend Pete and his team for any plastering and painting you need done. He is so trustworthy that we just let him have the key to our house on days when we had to be out of town. We also highly recommend them for built-in bookcases. In all areas of communication, whether it be estimates, invoicing, arrival and departure times, project updates, Pete was prompt and thorough and clear. Pete also kindly served as a resource in helping us find someone to help with hardwood floors and with blinds. We appreciate Pete's knowledge, skill level, and appreciation for and love of old houses. He believes in the old, proper way of doing things and I say this in the best meaning of the words. We hope to work with him again in two years when we renovate our kitchen and plan to have him oversee the project, in full, as general contractor.
Description of Work: Major plaster repair and paint in four main areas of house: dining room, living room, hallway, master bedroom. Additional project: Built-in bookcases in living room (adjoining fireplace) -- designed to match mantle of fireplace and including installation Built-in bookcases, floor-to-ceiling, in dining room -- also designed to complement the architecture of the house and of the window trim Lastly: front door repair. We have a very unique front door that is rounded at the top; it needed extensive repairs and re-painting. This request was added after original work was agreed on and Pete kindly added this to the overall project

Pete Grady did tuckpointing work on our brick home recently, as the mortar is breaking down in some spots on our brick exterior (older home, built 1929). Unfortunately, this caused us to have some bubbling up, cracking on our interior plaster walls. Once again, Pete came to the rescue, doing tuckpointing work on the outside and then his wonderful plaster work on our interior walls. Pete has done various work for us for numerous years – painting, plaster wall repair, tuckpointing work, and more. Nobody compares to the great plaster work Pete does. Thanks Pete!
Description of Work: Tuckpointing on home brick exterior. Plaster wall repair and painting.
Peter Grady is incredibly knowledgeable, reliable, communicative, and trustworthy. Ahead of starting the project (he's done two major jobs for me on properties in a historical neighborhood), he emails me a detailed description of the scope of the work, materials cost, and hourly/monetary estimate of the work to be done. He and his team members would alway show up when he said he would and run a clean and meticulous job site. He finishes on time, on budget, and his work is exceptional. I would recommend that you check out his website for samples of his work which speaks for themselves. He adheres to principles laid out by the Society for the Preservation of Ancient Buildings and I was extremely pleased on both occasions; I continue to recommend his company to friends and co-workers without hesitation. If you decide to hire him, you will be in the very best possible hands.

Pete and his team are wonderful and very talented. We are thankful for their excellent and outstanding work. What a beautiful and perfect restoration ! They came that very next day and cleared out all the heavy plaster pieces and insulation. They cleaned all the mess and debris. This was a major undertaking. They carefully removed the many broken pieces of heavy glass from the large coffee table. They cleaned the sofa, the area rugs, the hard wood floor. The following day, they began building a "room within the room" in order to prevent dust and debris from entering the other areas of the house. They evaluated the floor joists above and determined it was all secure and in great condition, no water issue. The problem was that type of nails used in that era, in this room. Then they began the restoration of the plaster, a special technique that requires much skill and knowledge. They matched the texture and the paint of the other ceilings perfectly. Every day before leaving, they cleaned the area, the hard wood floors, and were careful and very respectful in every way. They take such good care with every detail. Pete explains the process and communicates each step along the way. They are always on time, courteous and pleasant. We are very thankful for the amazing and outstanding job they did. A perfect restoration!
Description of Work: Restoring and repairing plaster ceiling. The home was built in around 1930. The original rooms have beautiful plaster walls and ceilings. The main living room ceiling developed cracks due and a large portion of the ceiling in the main living room fell and crashed to the floor due to an old type of nail used in that era.

Description of Work: The Painting People painted the Outside trim on my 1870's Italianate four family in the Prospect Hill Historic District. The building is four stories, approximately 6000 sq feet. They were wonderful. While all work was carefully cleared with me, they treated the building as if it was their own and performed carpentry replacing rotted wood as well as masonry tuck pointing to assure that the painting product would be perfect and the areas were fully restored. I could not recommend them more highly. Exterior painting Carpentry Touch pointing, masonry repair Plastering

Pete and his crew dug out the yard some, placed/leveled gravel (solid base to help with drainage), built the shed (measure, cut, etc., including roof) and painted it. He had to go get more wood since the kit was missing some trim pieces. The finished shed works/looks GREAT (see photo)! Another Pete and crew job well done! Pete has a great crew of young guys who are always professional, respectful and obviously skilled. This won’t be the last time we have Pete do work for us. Initially when I need work done, I have to wait for a while for Pete to call me back but once I get that initial contact on this job and I’m in his queue of work, he doesn’t forget me. Once he’s doing my job, he is very good with communication, letting me know what to expect.

We found Pete about 10 years ago on Angie's List and he did an excellent job with plastering our dining room wall (after we removed a chair rail leaving chunks of plaster missing). After he finished, you never would have known the chair rail was there. We have used Pete since for all our painting and plastering needs because of his attention to detail, quality of work and very reasonable price.

Pete is top notch, and approaches his profession as a craft with high standards for quality of work and service. My house is a "historic" one build in the early part of the 20th century. Pete used traditional plaster appropriate to the period for the repair job here. End result was great, in appearance and durability.

My home is an older 1950?s home with plaster walls that were starting to show cracks in the ceiling. I found Pete Grady of the Painting People on Angie?s list in the fall of 2013. Based on his experience, knowledge with plaster and positive reviews from other customers, I hired him after he came to give me a quote. Pete Grady is an exceptional craftsman who is thorough, communicative and just generally a nice man. I was so satisfied with the repairs he made on my ceilings in 2013 that I hired him back this October 2014 to fix other minor plaster cracks and to paint my living room, dining room and hallway. The plaster repairs are superb and look as if they were never there and I?m enjoying my new wall color. I would highly recommend Pete Grady for painting and especially for plaster work.

There are a lot of painters out there, but none I interviewed had the restoration experience and expertise, with knowlege of plastering along with painting and appreciation of old home construction, that Pete Grady had, and ultimately demonstrated over the 3+ months I engaged him. Our house suffered water damage as a result of severe cold last Winter which caused a pipe inside the house to crack. Water damage extended from areas on the first floor--foyer, living room, dining room, front porch--to the basement. Pete evaluated each area very methodically and was consistently on budget and always communicated what he was doing and rationale based on the house's original workmanship and construction. Pete approaches his work as a craft, not a mere job;he requires this work ethic of his employees who are smart and congenial as well. His work--painting and plastering on the area damaged by the water--largely paid for by insurance--was so good --and he so trustworthy--that I asked Pete to paint and replaster other areas of the house largely neglected over the years.
