I was out of town and agreed to let them start. I returned and inspected and there was only one miscommunication that was corrected that day. Took about 3 days to complete. Workers that I had contact with were very professional with an eye toward customer service.

Overall, a very good experience. I gave a B for quality because I had to point out a few flaws ranging from lack of caulking to some areas needing a 3rd coat. Pete resolved every issue I had, so the end result was an A, but I feel to deserve an "A" I shouldn't have to double-check the work. Pete and his crew were on time, cleaned up every day and communcated very well. I feel like I got a good value.

They were very responsive, punctual, and professional. I ended up using a different provider, but it was a tough decision. It came down to the price and that Pete Arnold was going to do 1 coat of primer 1 coat of paint, where as the other company did 2 finishing coats. If I had any more painting work in the future I would definitely call Pete.

I was concerned about the job because my mother is very hard to please. She likes clean and crisp lines and that is what she got. By the time Brad left that day she was completely satisfied. They completed the job in a day and she felt very comfortable with them. Before they left Brad made sure she had no issues and that she was happy. We will have them back to do the interior soon. The house looks wonderful....
Description of Work: The job consisted of painting the sides and the front of the house. Triming the gutters and shutters with a darker paint.

Pete was professional, through and through. He provided a detailed quote and was happy to provide answers when I sought even greater detail. His quote was very competitive and his plan for preparation and materials were top notch. There was no difference between the work he described and that described by those offering higher quotes. Also, he was patient as I sought the opinion of third-party masons in determining whether to caulk or tuckpoint some cracks between bricks. (Even the masons recommending caulking, which Pete?s team ultimately executed perfectly.) He also agreed to use my deck stain of choice (as recommended by Consumer Reports) and apply two coats, even though it wasn?t his usual material/approach. The work was executed, as promised, under the crew leadership of Matt. The pressure-washing of the delicate soft brick was performed with care to remove existing loose paint and lime deposits; subsequently, much time was spent on comprehensive hand scraping. The primer was tinted to ensure better coverage of the top coat (which was navy blue versus the existing orange). The brick?s top coat went on very well with the team alternating between roller and spray (where the sometimes deeply recessed mortar required.) The stone cornices/sills, stone foundation, wood window frames, wood and steel doors, and iron railings came out great, too. As for the decks, the pressure-washing was again executed with care since the wood was in pretty rough shape (though structurally sound). Two coats were applied, but there was some uneven coverage in one area due to the old wood and sun/shading: the team voluntarily applied a third coat in this area, which solved the issue. Overall, I think this was a pretty difficult job. The building is tall and it?s on a hill which goes both side-to-side and front-to-back. A JLG power lift was required and it required extensive leveling. Plus, there were many overhead wires to maneuver between. And the city came through to pave (ahead of schedule) half-way through the job. Pete?s team persevered and completed the work in a timely fashion. They also went above and beyond, replacing a missing piece of flashing (that I supplied), removing obsolete cabling, etc. Lastly, they cleaned up nicely before they left, with no paint chips to speak of left on the sidewalks.
Description of Work: Painted 1890's 4-story brick home (including brick, stone cornices/sills, stone foundation, wood window frames, wood and steel doors, and iron railings); prep work included pressure-washing, hand scraping, and caulking (with backing rod where necessary). Also, pressure-washed and stained 2 levels of decking.

I obtained the name of Pete Arnold Painting from Angie's List several years ago (2004). The work on my home (exterior) confirmed the recommendation of Angie's List. I have used the company for all of my painting since that time. This Spring we decided upon a major re-decorating of our interior and Mr. Arnold and his employees did a wonderful job of working around our schedules, and avoiding major removal of furniture. Mr. Arnolds employees are extremely skilled and courteous - able to accommodate last minute changes or requests. A couple of minor problems were quickly and cheerfully corrected. I would not hesitate to use the company again and, in fact, plan to do so in the Spring.

We decided to repaint the house we moved into last year to lighten the trim color (it was a dirty brown). Pete came out and provided an estimate. He was prompt and very professional. He told us upfront that it would be a couple of months before he could do the job, but we were not in a hurry. His crew got to us within a week or two of his original estimate. They did a great job! The quality of their work could not have been better. They painted exactly what was supposed to be painted and did not get paint on anything else. They took extreme care to do the job exactly like we wanted. For example, there was an excess of painted caulk around the windows. When they painted it all the lighter color, it made the paint look sloppy, so we asked them to paint the caulk the old, neutral color which blends with the brick pretty well. They then made the edges of the new paint crisp and clean, so that the new paint looks nice and neat, even up close. It was extra work for them, but made a huge difference. The only hiccup was that Pete originally estimated the job would take two coats. however, the new color was so much lighter than the old color that we actually needed three. To Pete's credit, he took responsibility for the error and I paid what I felt was very reasonable for the extra paint and labor. I also have to say that the crew anticipated this problem on the first day, showed me samples of one, two and three coats and then had me work the problem out with Pete. This was so much better than waiting until the end of the job for me to realize that it did not look good, which would have created a much more stressful situation. As it was, the crew was upfront about the problem and Pete and I had it worked out to our mutual satisfaction in less than 15 minutes. From there the job was just about perfect, as I mentioned above. The crew was courteous at all times, did their best to stay out of the way as they worked and cleaned up every day. Extremely professional! For us, it was well worth the time we had to wait for Pete Arnold to get to us.

I called them to tell that I am going to get the landscaping done in a weeks time, so, they offered to come within a couple of days and painted the whole house within 2 or 3 days. The worked performed was excellent and completed on schedule. We met with Pete and he provided us with a thorough and accurate appraisal including caulking the windows and making some minor repairs. Pete even assisted us in selecting a paint color which would work well with a new roof that had been recently installed. The painting crew arrived as scheduled and the foreman, Matt, was very polite and explained everything that would be done. They even came early the following morning to assure that the job would be completed in two days as promised. We were very pleased with the service provided and would recommend Pete Arnold Painting without hesitation.

The job went well. Since Pete does not work on the house himself, it was important to me to meet with his crew leader. This went well and helped to make my decision to have Pete's company do the job. Pete also agreed to purchase the paint from a paint technician whose judgement and paint mixing skills I particularly trust. The crew worked hard and were reliable. They were easy to communicate with about the job and were very willing to make requested adjustments. The house looks very good. I cannot yet speak for how well it holds up, because the work was just done this summer, but if that too proves to be good, we will be very happy. Pete has assured us that should we notice any problems within the first couple of months, we could call him and he wold take care of it. I think that this is important in such a big job, because it is difficult to notice everything immediately. I have already recommended Pete to a small business owner that I know.

The exterior of our house has been a constant source of trouble and we can't figure out why, except that several years ago we had a bad experience with a painter who "disappeared into the woodwork" so he could never come back to rectify the situation. Our lawyer, the BBB and you all tried to help but to no avail. Since then the paint cracks, bubbles, and peels every 2 years or so so Pete Arnold and his crew had to peel a lot of paint off, scrape, sand, and prime before the could even paint. It was not an easy job for them but they succeeded in making everything look nice. Now we are hoping our "peeling paint ghost" does not return for a while!
Description of Work: The people were all pleasant, they were on time and did a lot of work in a short time period...........even worked on Saturday. They cleaned up after themselves so the place really looked nice when they left. They painted our whole cedar frame ranch house outside including the trim (but not windows since they are new).

Very unsatisfactorily. Everything started out wonderfully, BUT the outcome was completely unacceptable. Pete's great ratings on Angie's List were a major factor in my choosing his company from the three that gave me estimates. His paperwork was very professional: copies of insurance and workman's comp, references, etc were provided with a professional and impressive contract proposal. Pete's communication with me prior to the work was timely and professional. He even agreed to honor the contract he'd written in the fall, with the same price, when I waited until the winter weather was over before signing the contract. Everything SEEMED professional and impressive. The real problem lies in the fact that Pete did not use the materials he specified in the contract, and when four separate technical reps I consulted about his choice of materials said he'd mixed incompatible materials (oil over top of acrylic) Pete refused to admit he may have made a bad decision. My contract specified a primer and topcoat of enamel (and we talked on the phone about that); Pete used an acrylic first coat and then used my old can of oil paint that I'd provided for color matching on top of that. I believe he said he did it to save drying time and get the work done in one day. I did my homework and learned that this was a bad idea and that the paint job would likely not last very long. Pete refused to acknowledge that any of these professionals' guidance might be valid. He asked me to call a paint expert he trusted, which I did, and that gentleman acknowledged that the tech experts at Sherwin Williams might know what they were talking about. Pete did offer to extend my warranty from one year to three, but was not willing to come back and remove the paint and redo the job properly. He finally agreed not to charge me for the job; Pete's bad choices mean that I will incur a much higher expense when this does need repainting which will almost certainly be in a much shorter time than it would otherwise have been, had it been done properly, because all the experts I spoke with said that you can't just paint over top of two incompatible layers.

Response from Pete Arnold & Co Painting Contractors LTD
I gave the member an estimate in November of 2008. She signed on March 10, 2009. It was a 15' metal cornus across the top of an older building amounting to $450.00. I honored the 2008 price. My men performed the work on May 11, 2009. The cornus was very rough. They scraped, prepped, primed and finish painted the cornus. I applied an acrylic metal primer and a coat of oil-based finish, which she insisted on. After completion she checked out the job and was very happy. I voluntarily told her the system I had used and she was fine with it. She made a comment to me about how it had to be hard to do business with people I had never even met, and said it had to be difficult to entrust in a stranger to pay. She said she would get a check in the mail immediately and thanked me for my work. That was Monday. On Friday an envelope arrived with an extensive letter explaining to me that she did not like the paint job and was not going to pay. No phone call expressing her concern, no personal conversation with me, just a letter explaining why she was not going to pay. Strange! The bottom line is, her cornus is painted and looks great and she has not paid a dime. She called the Sherwin Williams tech. line and questioned my every move. The tech rep told her that you should NEVER put an oil over an acrylic- ABSOLUTELY UNTRUE!! Why, I have no idea. I am so confident in the work I have performed for her that I offered to extend my warranty from my standard 1 year to 3 years. She said that was fine and she would pay me in three years. I told her that is not the way warranties work. This still wasn't good enough for her. Nothing was going to make her happy. I considered filing a lien on her property or small claims court. However, for $450.00 the time, aggravation, and bad report on Angie's List did not seem to justify that option. I recently was informed that I had an F report on my reviews, which really surprised me because I have always been an A rated company. When I read it was from her, I was shocked. Completed work that has no flaws, no $ exchanged, and she is bashing my company. Seems kind of backwards to me. If she was that concerned with the failure of this job, wouldn't she pay this sum of money for the 3 year warranty. Seems shady to me. You win. It was a pleasure doing your job for free.

Pete came to my 1919 Hyde Park home to give an estimate for exterior trim painting. His professionalism, punctuality, and follow-up were impressive. His estimate for the project beat D&S, Hartmann and Custom Colors painting comanies. As it turned out an old friend's painting company was willing to do it "at-cost", as a favor, for nearly 1/3 lower than my next lowest estimate. However, if not for the circumstances, I would have hired Pete, and it was worth a nice "Angie's List" write-up! Reader, please consider Pete for your painting job!

The first job he did for me was exterior painting, and the contract called for 2 coats of a specific kind of paint and he was supposed to do other items. He didn't do the other items that were including in the painting contract and he only did one coat. Then, I started to get paint that was peeling. He said that it was getting late in the season but he would take care of them in the spring, which he originally insisted on doing the job in November rather than waiting for spring. My problem is now I have to keep getting him to come back time after time. He said he promised he would redo. In the meantime, I had an interior job for him to do. He gave me a reasonable bid on the interior job; however, he wasn't the cheapest. He talks a good fight, so I had him do the interior job. They redid the interior job 3 times, and I'm still not completely satisfied with it, but I got tired of having them come out. Now, I have to redo it myself or hire someone else to come out and do it. I would not recommend him. The price listed is for both jobs, they were $2000 each. If you don't do the job correctly and have to keep coming out, you fail the test, and he failed. In my opinion, it is the contractor's job to make sure the job is done correctly, not mine because I'm not a painting professional. I have to look at my contract but as I recall there was a 5 year warranty on his jobs.
Description of Work: They did an exterior and interior painting job. He did 2 separate jobs for me and came back 3 times for one job, and should have came back 3 times on the other job, but I got so frustrated with him that I didn't have him come back.

The painting went very well. Pete told me that I did not need two coats over the entire house. He said that where the paint came off down to the wood, he would primer it and then repaint. This saved me money.
Description of Work: Pete caulked around doors and windows before painting. I also asked him to remove the gutters before painting the gutter board because there was some bubbling of the paint from a previous painter. He did so gladly. I also asked him to repair any loose siding or any rotten boards due to water damage. He did not do that but recommended someone who could.
