Service Experts Heating & Air Conditioning did an excellent job. The service people were excellent. The manager stopped by the house to see how things were going and see if there was anything he could correct while he was there. I was very impressed with them. For the yearly package it was 150 dollars.

Service Experts and their predecessor, Knochelmann, has done work for us before and for bigger jobs, such as replacing a drain stack, I would use them again. However, this was the first time we have used them for a small job and the price was astronomical for what they did, and the faucet repair was not performed correctly. First, our toilet was loose and the hold-down bolt that connects it to the floor would not tighten. They came to the house, which costs a service call fee of roughly $80, then inspected the toilet and told me - upfront - that they charge on a flat rate system and it would cost $300 to repair the issue. This seemed high but they were already there so I directed them to go ahead. Within 30 minutes the repair was complete - very efficient, but it makes the price seem even more unreasonable. $600 per hour, PLUS the service call amount, strikes me as excessive, and I am a believer in paying people well. Next they turned to the faucet repair, which they told me upfront would cost $225 - again, seemed high but they were already there so I had them go ahead - and diagnosed the problem as a bad cartridge, which they had to order. They came back at a later date when my wife was there and installed the cartridge, but when my wife commented that the issue wasn't fixed, their response was "well, we don't know what else could be causing the problem." I ended up having to call the faucet manufacturer, order a repair kit for the handle assembly, where a broken plastic ring was causing the original problem, and hire someone else to install it. I called Service Experts to ask for a refund for the faucet repair, which they eventually provided after significant resistance. They initially couldn't refund the amount without a manager's approval, and it took several days and multiple calls for the manager to get back to me. Then, he wanted to send someone out to repair it again, instead of providing a refund. I explained that since the plumber had said "I don't know what else would be wrong with it" I didn't have a lot of confidence in a second repair, and regardless I had already ordered the necessary part and scheduled someone else to finish the project. The manager still didn't want to provide a refund and wanted to have their staff come finish the repair. I recognize the benefit in this approach, but by this time I had lost confidence and was frustrated since I felt I had overpaid for service that didn't even solve the problem. Ultimately, they did refund the amount for the faucet repair. I did not ask for a refund on the toilet repair since I had agreed to the amount and the repair was done correctly. I feel like the service and pricing was better when the company was Knochelmann, before they were rolled into Service Experts, but I would still use Service Experts again for major jobs, however I would definitely not use them for minor repairs or small projects since I think the pricing and quality are unattractive.
Description of Work: Removed and re-set existing toilet to repair mounting bracket; repaired kitchen faucet.

We have had an excellent experience with Service Experts. The representatives are good about contacting us to make appointment for our twice a year check ups. The technician arrives when they say they will and always call on there way. The technicians are knowledgable and polite. They do not try to sell additional services or pressure you into getting any more than you truly require. When our unit wasn't working properly in the extreme heat, a tech was dispatched and was able to provide a temporary fix until he could get the correct part. The technician, Anthony, stayed late into a Saturday evening until the job was complete. He really knows his stuff and was wonderful to work with.
Description of Work: We have a maintenance contract and they were here to check and clean and maintain our furnace and air conditioning. We have used Service Expert to install the unit and for service and maintenance. We have also had to call on them in emergency situation when the air conditioner was not working properly.

They installed an air conditioner and furnace for us last year that included a free spring and fall tune up. When the guy did the tune up on the air conditioning, he flipped a switch off to do some cleaning and forgot to flip the switch back on. It was 90 degrees out so we went to turn the air conditioner on and it didn't work. They resolved the situation and a service person was here within an hour and a half to check it out.

The technician and salesperson lied about the condition of our air conditioner and furnace in order to get us to purchase a new one. They used fear tactics to get us to purchase quickly. Would not recommend this group to anyone.
Description of Work: During routine maintence on our 10 year old AC unit we were informed by the technician that it needed to be replaced since there was a freon leak. He also informed us that we had a crack in our heat exchanger in our furnance and it too needed to be replaced. A salesperson arrived and confirmed this and told us that the crack heat exchanger could result in carbon monoxide poisoning if not replaced ASAP. They did NO testing of the unit and the furnace was not even on. They also asked my wife if she had headaches -presumably from CO poisoning. They attempted to show me the crack, but I could not see it. They quoted me $16,000 to replaced both the furnace and AC or just $11,000 to replace the AC. I told them I wanted a second opinion. I had another HVAC company come and do assessment and found out the following: (1) there was NO crack in our heater exchanger. This other company did a CO test and found that it was normal and that our furnace was in good shape. They also informed me that CO leak into living space would NOT happen given high efficiency furnace and would simply go our exhaust. In addition, the heat exchanger is covered by Carrier warranty for 24 years. (2) our AC unit was fine and the temperature differential was normal and freon level was also normal.

Overall I will continue to use this company and generally do a good job.
Description of Work: I have used this company since I moved to town in 1999. They have always been polite; punctual; professional and overall good people. I think they are a bit pricey compared to some other companies but not a big difference. Over all the years I have dealt with them the seem to get a little "spotty" on being proactive with the customer. We have always had a maintenance agreement with them where they come out twice a year to service the Heating then cooling system. Sometimes they contact us via postcard to remind us to make an appointment; sometimes it's a call and sometimes they simply don't contact. So there is inconsistency. Last summer we needed repair on our furnace and they had to order parts saying it would be 2 days to get in. A week later we still didn't get a follow-up on why the part was not in. It required numerous phone calls on my end to finally get an answer. While it was not their fault the part got back ordered, it was their fault they didn't call to keep us informed. I purchased from then a complete HVAC system 11 years ago converting from Heat Pump to Gas. The system lasted 10 year and last summer, when their diagnosis of my system was faulty, ended up having them install a complete new furnace. When they came out to service my new system, it turns out they installed the water drain line wrong and we had water on the floor. They did fix this problem. So while they haven't been perfect, they have done what they would said they would do. In March 2012 we got estimates for duct cleaning (which they had done 10 years ago). It did turn out they were about mid-pack on their pricing so to be consistent we hired them. They did a good job; spent most of the day cleaning the system and showed us all the dirt that was removed from our system. I would hire them again to do this

I was very satisfied. The night earlier, we received a call from a manager at Service Experts asking us to call if we were not satisfied in any way with the work that would be performed the next day. He apologized for the past two cancellations and offered an explanation, which I appreciated. He left his name and mobile number and asked me to call "for any reason at all". The tech also called in advance the next morning, arrived on time, and performed the maintenance work we had scheduled. The tech was very nice and professional. My good feelings about Service Experts have been restored and they are back in our good graces. If they care enough to call to discuss their service and they are genuine in their concern for us as a customer, and then they deliver, that is a sign of a company that gets it. I will continue to rely upon them as my one and only HVAC service company.
Description of Work: After one cancellation and one no-show -- for admittedly valid explanations where the techs had personal emergencies pop up unexpectedly -- we did come to agreement on a third, rescheduled visit for our spring mainenance work on our HVAC unit. The tech called while he was on his way, showed up promptly within the two-hour 8am-10am window, and performed a check-up and tune-up of our system.

Not well. When this was Knochelmann's Service Experts, we did not experience this kind of snafu. I'm guessing there was a change in ownership with the dropping of the Knochelmann's name -- I don't know for sure and our postage card simply indicated that the company name was changing and that we could expect the same great service you've come to love from Service Experts. Well, that's still to be determined, as our first experiences with the "new" ownership hasn't been all that satisfying. We will continue to monitor how they perform, and we'll give them more opportunity to get it right, but in my book they're on probation and at risk of losing our business if they continue down this path. It is interesting that a steady A grade under Knochelmann's has slid to an overall B grade (which certainly isn't bad, but it might indicate a slippage in quality or service). We'll see how they do. I'll be fair and report back -- good and bad.
Description of Work: I have been a Service Experts customer for a few years now. Initially found them on Angie's List when they had an A grade. They installed a new central A/C unit in 2010 for us. We have been happy with that. We pay for their annual maintenanance program, which provides us two visits for check-ups and tune-ups twice a year. They conveniently remind you to call and schedule your maintenance visits for the spring and fall/winter. We twice have scheduled them in for our spring tune-up. The first time, we got a call the night before indicating the service tech had a personal issue that he had to deal with that would prevent him from performing the maintenance. We understood and rescheduled for another day. Well, the next time, no one showed at all during the agreed-upon two-hour time window (8am-10am). We called later in the day and were told that two techs had to attend a funeral and were unable to make the appt. We didn't receive any phone call telling us that. Now, we'll try a third time to schedule our maintenance visit. Cross our fingers and hope!

I have used Knochlemans, now called Service Experts for 13 years for HVAC; Water heater; Duct Cleaning repair/replacements/maintenance. They are always prompt; courteous;and professional. The have replaced my entire heating/cooling system changing it over from Heat Pump to Natural gas. They come out twice a year to do a Furnance and A/C maintenance service. They call ahead of time when they are on their way and have always been in the initial promise window.
Description of Work: The most current service was duct cleaning. This process included sealing all of the cold air returns and vents; having a very large (about the size of a furnance) suction unit with a Hepa Filter; cutting a hole in the duct work and attaching this unit. They they use a high pressure air want and run it down the duct's to clean. The Suction unit catches all of the debris (and it was A LOT). This who process took about 6 hours start to finish.

Spent almost an hr. . I seem to recall; others done sooner. Very professional in presentation/uniforms, etc. but measuring windows and using booties was a more than a little over the top. There are charts for R values for windowns espeically when known vendors and yr. of construction. Price bid was totally ridiculous and as an engineer I resent them wasting my time with bid at $9K Next minute when told them that was out of bounds it came to $8k, I got it done for less than $6400 from another reputable vendor (Angies list vendor too) so was still not even in the ballpark for these guys. Don't waste your time.

Unfortunately I recommended the company to my fiance when they were still Knochleman's before they were swallowed up by Service Experts. They arrived on time, but 2 separate installation teams showed up, after much discussion and phone calling, 1 team left. The installers did an ok job until it came to dealing with the Carrier Air Purifier that had been installed on the old furnace. The salesman, James, stated Lennox did not make a purifier of the same quality as the Carrier and my fiance was given a credit and the Carrier unit was to be hooked up to the Lennox furnace Service Experts was putting in. The techs apparently had not dealt with Carrier before and when they went to wire the unit to the furnace it somehow stopped functioning. The tech and my fiance called James again and made him aware of the problem. They did some research and found the Carrier unit is still under warranty and made arrangements to order a new part through Carrier. A tech came out and supposedly got the serial and model numbers off the Carrier unit, but it took another call from my fiance to get the needed numbers. The part was ordered and the "senior tech" was sent out to install a new power pack on Monday 11/21, he arrived without the part. It was evident he had never seen the piece of equipment before and had no idea what to do, so he tried diagnosing the problem again, it had ALREADY been determined! The other tech finally arrived with the Power Pack and they were set to install it when my fiance, who IS NOT an HVAC expert, noticed that it did not seem to be the right size. Low and behold, Carrier had SUPPOSEDLY sent the wrong part. Another call to salesman James who stated he was SURPRISED the tech seemed confused about the piece of Carrier equipment and he would see what could be done for all the confusion and trouble. Now they are offering a UV purifying system ($500.00) value free for his trouble along with the still nonfunctional Carrier they BROKE in the fist place! We will NEVER use this company again! Do you homework before hiring them. Knochelman's good name has been destroyed by this company.

Response from Knochelmann Service Experts
I am the James referred to in this review-I decided to join Angie's List in order to provide a few clarifications on this situation--I dealt with the homeowner, Mr. Homeowner, only. My only contact with his fiance' (the person that submitted this review) was sending a gift card to her as a thank you for that referral. My focus is on customer service and taking care of my client. For instance, what is percieved as install crew confusion was actually an attempt to ensure that I had installers there in the timeframe Mr. Homeowner required (he said he had to leave by a certain time). When it appeared that the initial crew couldn't arrive in time, I sent a second crew to be sure. Mr. Homeowner expressed his concern that the air cleaner, that seems to be the focus of this review, had never been wired quite correctly. Rather than investing in another equivalent, or better new air cleaner, Mr. Homeowner chose to have his existing piece connected to our new Lennox equipment. Unfortunately, with a conservative 40+ equipment brands out there, not every installer or technician is intimately familiar with every component or accessory piece that we come across. When I was made aware of the issue of the incorrect part being sent, I contacted Carrier directly and was told that over the years since the cleaner was originally installed, there had been several model changes and that the numbers from the original unit had transitioned a few times. That resulted in several different sizes now being associated with the same model number. I had Carrier expedite shipping and arranged for service as quickly as possible. During the period of getting this corrected, I was able to offer a free air purification product (a $500+ value) as an apology. And, as of now, to the best of my knowledge the system is up and running fine. Mr. Homeowner has excellent equipment, an essentially new air cleaner at no cost, and a $500+ air purification system (also at no cost) with a 5-year maintenance package and extended labor warranty on the system. I was able to capture a variety of rebates and credits for Mr. Homeowner totaling almost $1500. Unfortunately, during those 6 or 7 times that I contacted the customer, I was merely told that there was frustration...not that things had escalated to the level I am reading of now. I did everything I was able to facilitate the situation and get it resolved as quickly as possible. Then, as now, my focus is customer service and I provide my direct contact information to every client I work with to help ease issues that might occur. I do my best for every customer I work with.

As explained above, what was supposed to be a quick tune up turned into a 2 day long experience with a potential price tag close of over $9,000. While I believe that there may well have been some problems with the efficient operation of the heating system, I know that it was not running on auxilary or emergency heat all the time so I have a problem accepting that it wouldn't turn on at all when he was here. Even if everything that they said and did was completely accurate, which I have no way of knowing, their price for the new system was way out of line with competitors and the Lennox system they sold me 11 years ago should never have had the various problems I've had all along.
Description of Work: On November 10th, a service tech arrived for a routine,pre-paid tune up of my heat pump as the cold weather started. Prior to his arrival, I had not noticed any problems and expected him to be here no more than an hour. Wow, was I wrong. Within 15 minutes of his arrival, he told me that my heating system was not turning on, that it was overheating, and every 20 minutes or so he was guessing something else was wrong. He was here for hours and then said that I couldn't run the heat pump but could use my emergency, electric heat. He charged me $140 for something supposedly wrong with the compressor. He then returned the next day and repeatedly tried various things to correct the overheating. Eventually, he said he didn't know so a 2nd tech showed up. He said that it was the thermal expansion valve that was bad and that my tech had known that, he was just getting a 2nd opinion. The cost to replace the valve was over $1,000. Yikes, a routine call turned into a potentially large expense. Then, when I was about to agree, I was told that because the Lennox Elite they had instralled was 11 years old, it was a big investment in such an old system and there was no guarantee something else wouldn't break at any time. So, a salesman who didn't listen came out and quoted $9,400 for a new, middle range system. (Even though nothing was wrong with the AC/Air Handler, it still all had to be replaced if the heat pump was since it used a coolant no longer allowable.) The two days combined took up over 11 hours of my day. The next day, I obtained 4 different quotes for the job - all significantly less and still for high-quality systems, like Trane. [And, if I just replace the valve and take my chances, someone else can do that for $250 less than Service Experts but now after getting all the sales info, I want to get a newer system that I had no interest in just 2 days ago.] I just don't trust them anymore. It was an interesting co-incidence that 11 years ago, within a day of having my regular A/C tune up I suddenly had no air and had to buy a system from them for over $5,000.
