Took almost 3 weeks to complete because of weather. The crew showed up several times during the fix, I was never bothered, as they preformed the work and left. When they were finished I received a phone call, and was told they would send me a bill after Karl inspected the finished product. Very pleased with the work ethic of all the men on this job. Everyone always deferred back to Karl, who I suspect, hires very qualified personnel.

It went very well, the new chimney looks great and the workmen did a very professional job. They were all polite and customer oriented.

They gave me a quote in January and said they would fit me into their schedule when they had some work in my area, as my project was relatively small. Four months later the work is still not done and I cannot get them to return my calls. Very poor followup from their office staff.

Desired a new fireplace door for an updated look. Decided on a Thermo-Rite trackless glass door with a textured black finish. Purchased door plus installation from Karl Mattes Co. Installers worked quickly and efficiently to remove the old door and install the new one. It looks great!

Karl Mattes Co. had performed high quality craftsmanship at my home before, removing two deteriorating original chimneys and replacing them. The roofing crew was the most job attentive one I've seen. They arrived on time each day and stayed on their tasks the full day., Their roofing work, plywood replacement to eliminate damaged basic wood structure, underlayment installation, flashing and placement of my selected shingles was clearly professional and worth the estimated cost for a long lasting goof.

They completed work as promised and we no longer have a roof leak.

As always, Mattes are consummate professionals. They're never the least expensive and often 1.5 others prices but the work is always done on time with excellent results.

Well, no problems. they came on time and got the job done.

Our flue that vents the gas furnace was blocked with broken flue tiles. Thankfully the furnace shuts off when it can't vent. So we weren't going to die from CO exposure but the cold house might get us! When I called for an estimate for the flue lining plus a moderately long list of chimney maintenance items I learned that they were booking appointments 2 1/2 months out. Eeekk! Realizing our predicament, Karl squeezed us in between other jobs for the needed flue lining and will return this winter or spring for the rest of the list. Everyone I encountered at Karl Mattes was considerate, professional and good natured.

After much research, I purchased a Rasmussen gas log set (logs, burner, embers) from Karl Mattes Company. Their price was the best for this particular gas log set. Based on Karl Mattes Company's recommendations, I hired Beresford Plumbing to do the installation and provide the gas valve control (separate review).. Mattes Co. even arranged to deliver the log set to Beresford before they came to my home for the installation.

I contacted Karl Mattes at the recommendation of my neighbors to inspect and clean my fireplace and chimney. Two employees came to my house August 8. They immediately determined that the damper would not open at all and therefore the chimney could not be inspected, let alone cleaned. They were only at my home for about four minutes, including the time it took us to move the coffee table out of the way, and much of that was dedicated to small talk about the Rookwood tiles on my fireplace (entirely unrelated to the work to be performed). The employees were polite and after thanking them they left my house and sat in their work van for another half our or so. I was shocked to receive an $85 bill on Aug. 19 for "labor," especially since the employees who came to my house responded to my "thank you!" by saying "we didn't have to do anything!" I called the office on Aug. 19 and explained than an $85 "labor" bill for a 4-minute-long visit with no actual labor performed was unreasonable, but the company's response was "everybody does things differently," "we have lots of good reviews," etc., and that they would not waive or reduce the charge. When I scheduled the appointment, I was not told about any minimum charge, which would have prompted me to call another provider.

Great customer service and good communication! Pretty practical and utilitarian in their approach, so if you are looking for something fancy, you'll need to be specific and ask for it. They cleaned up very well after working and were courteous. Karl, Nancy, and the crew were a pleasure to work with.

Very well. Arrived on time. Covered all areas between the front door and the fireplace. Did the work quickly and efficiently. Cleaned up (no mess!).

We moved into a new home and had tried to start the gas fireplace, but couldn't. We weren't sure if it was our lack of knowledge or there was a problem. Unfortunately it was the busy time of year for fireplace work, so we had to wait awhile to get an appointment. But when we did, the employee was prompt and very helpful. He explained how to start the fireplace. We also wanted to know if the fireplace needed to be cleaned. He told us it didn't, so he didn;t try to sell us something we didn't need.

The visit by the technician started great - super friendly and knowledgeable, but there was absolutely no follow up. He said he would 1) send me information and a list of plumbers that could help with our gas line in our fireplace 2) would either look at our exterior fireplace masonry that day and send us and estimate in the mail, or if it was too snowy would come back after the snow was gone and send an estimate. I received neither (that was almost 3 months ago)

They were excellent in every way. We had looked around for a while to pick the right craftsman. They have always had a great reputation in Cincinnati and now I know why. I would recommend them to anyone. We have been having problems with our fireplace drawing and they offered a lower cost fix then anyone else we had talked to.

Karl Mattes Co. cleaned my chimney. They also advised me about potential issues with the configuration of the fireplace and venting of heat and smoke as well as ways to avoid chimney fires (primarily, don't burn paper in your fireplace). He also counseled us on the value of a fireplace insert as an alternative to a furnace for heating.

Mr. Karl Mattes visited us a couple of days after we called for help. He inspected the chimney by climbing on the roof. A few days later, we were given a very precise estimate and description of the work and scheduled the repair. Three men arrived on schedule. The first day was used to build a scaffold. The new chimney was built over the next day and a half. We were given instructions as to care, mainly, wait until spring to paint (use Rustoleum) the metal cap. It is a sturdy new chimney, and the builders let me climb the roof to inspect the job, hands on. We are pleased with the work. It looks as if it were part of the house from the beginning.
