Steve Carver was great to work with in selecting and ordering our new Provia front door. The door arrived on schedule and the installers were excellent - professional and courteous - even going out of their way in discovering and sealing a leak in the existing entryway window above the door. The new door is beautiful, the quality is superb, and it has been complemented on by the entire neighborhood. My only regret was not going with Jim Carver & Sons for the whole house window replacement project that was quoted as well - went instead with the local franchise of the manufacturer (about 10% less for the same) and now wish we had given our business to Jim Carver & Sons. Jim Carver & Sons will definitely be our first choice for future remodeling projects and we always recommend them to friends and family.

When I called for the appointment, I had to wait about two weeks. No problem there as the doors were not a pressing problem. The service provider was punctual, and I was pleased with the work. I would use this company again.
Description of Work: I had two solid wood doors which had swollen and become difficult to open to the outside. These doors are rarely used, as they lead to an outside lower level deck. I'm not sure what he did, but the doors work fine now. He did work for four to five hours on them, and he had to go and buy supplies and come back. I am very pleased with the result.

It was absolutely excellent. It took them awhile but it was a good job. Their price is not the priciest but they are definitely medium to the higher scale. The craft they offer is top of the line product and top of the line workmanship. If you don’t like something they fix it. You get what you pay for.

Jim Carver & sons started 12/29/14 removing an old bathtub, toilet vanity with a sink. They removed a closet for more room for the bigger vanity and mirror. Tiled a new shower, tiled in a soaker bath tub plus toilet. Tiled the floor, and walls. Glass in shower. Put in new fan, heater and a light system. 2 can lights plus a can light for the other closet. Put in 2 wall switches and 2 outlets. There was a lot more done than I'm putting down. It took about 5 weeks from start to finish. Barb, designed and kept the work on track. Tony and Shaun did a good job. They kept us informed on the progress or problems. I'm very happy with the bathroom.

Jim Carver employee, Rick, came to house on Sep 15 to measure and provide advice on installing tile backsplash in kitchen. He said he would draw up a plan over two weeks and give us a call. No call was received so called him on Oct 29 and he said he would get a plan together within the week and call. Again , no call was received. I am no longer interested in dealing with these unreliable people.

Sir, I really appreciate this information. I own the company, and I am truly sorry that one of my own employees acted in this manner. The designer is going through some horrible personal issues and has not been his self, but is getting better. Our company works very hard to provide excellent service to all our Angies clients. I am sorry that the experience that you had with my employee was not good. The employee has been reprimanded and getting retrained in custom service policies. Thank you again, for bring this to my attention. Best regards, Dave Carver
They always showed up on time, crew was very careful and competent, polite and considerate. Their work was carefully done and top quality. Work was completed on time, even a day or two early. Office was easy to contact. Barbara, designer, was always available and checked in person on progress. I kept a photo journal almost daily and sent it to Barbara after completion. We would definitely use them again. It is difficult to compare pricing because we investigated just a few other choices, but felt Carver's work and what they offered was worth the cost. We are more than happy with the results.
Description of Work: Remodeled 50 year old bathroom, removed old ceramic floor tile & wall tile, removed old vanity, sink, mirror, bathtub. Initial planning took a while, but this detailed planning later benefited us. In the contract we have all selected materials listed very clearly. Both 2D and 3D to-the-scale design were attached to the contract, which left no room for any doubts later on, and left nothing to worry about once the work started. The installer took great care of every details. During the project, the job site was kept very clean. I would certainly use their service again. We had another two bidders besides Jim Carver, and Jim Carver was the most expensive, but the proposed pricing was the most detailed. We picked them based on good reviews and recommendations from friends. We're very glad that we picked Jim Carver based on good reputation instead of price.
Description of Work: Completely remodelled our master bathroom. Ripped off existing floor and fixtures, rerouted plumbing to accommodate new location of bathtub and shower. We purchased our own bathtub, bathtub faucets, and exposed shower kit from Signature Hardware. Vanities and vanity faucets were provided by Jim Carver based on what we saw in their store display. New bypass sliding shower door and panels were installed. Jim Carver subcontracted the shower glass work to Allure Glass, which also did a great job.

Nice showroom. They never did supply a basic dwg. although he came out and did a decent job of sharing:____and promised that.. They are high cost. (I had 6 bids so I as an engineer I know what I am talking about.__ Avoid Jason Schmidt Homes too as he doesn't even understand what he is supposed to do via actually supply/work that was clearly delineated & discussed ("D" rating by me) and likes to "cut and paste" grandiose verbiage that is N/A___ so unless you want to drop $15K+ on a CARVER, et al. bathroom complex use others including Belmont Floors and pay cash for discount if inclined.__ My friend used CARVER and spent almost $15K; he said it was a "Good job", JUST NOT a great job for the money he spent.__I fully concur as I've seen it.__ They were trustworthy with house key I see.__ I inspected the work much later and the very 1st evident thing I saw as an auditor was the tile line was not flush. Really; the 1st thing people see!!!!!!!!!!__ The quality of the job should not require you to baby sit them!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!__ CARVER was helpful in signing out tile to look at and had that in stock to look at actual samples, so that was good. Better than Take it for Granite I felt in that respect I felt. __We looked at 20 vendors so I know what I've seen. I would not use CARVER; once they know you are not wanting spend big, big bucks their enthustiasm wanes.

Dave Carver came to our house to see our kitchen and listen to my ideas and support with his ideas and examples. Then we went to the Anderson business to see samples of all tile, counter tops and sinks. He was very helpful and open with suggestions and his business has many kitchen models. He also took extra time to show me large samples of Cambria quartz at a separate site so I could see the color changes. I did have to go to another business to see the e-quartz sink in a color I was interested in, yet Dave ordered me the specific sink I wanted sent directly to my house. Workmen, Adam and Eddie, were so polite and hard working, both with dismantling of counters and tile and installation of tile and sink. Also they were willing to see my photos of designs for the travertine tile center piece above the sink- it does take skill to work with tile in an artistic design motif and I am so pleased with end result. They reinstalled faucet and garbage disposal and they cleaned up very well ( I am a neat freak). The counter-top was Cambria quartz so it had to have separate installers from Carvers. Those separate installers did not put down a floor cover for moving the stove and they scratched my wood floor. That was my only damage and it was not Carver's fault. Carver's installers, Adam and Eddie, covered all and did no damage to ANY surfaces. I would highly recommend to customers to remove all items from drawers, under counter cabinets and sink because no matter how careful the installers are, it is messy due to the open area of counter. It will get in drawers and shelves. Considering how much work was done, Carvers were excellent in maintaining the best installation and cleanup possible. I am very please I chose Carvers from my 4 bids, even though they were slightly higher.

This is the second time I've used Carver & Sons for a remodel job and I definitely recommend them. I previously used them for my master bath and this time updated my kitchen and remodeled a powder room. They do a great job of helping with choices - Barb came to my house and made suggestions, then we met at their showroom and got to see lots of options. She helped me quickly narrow down on counter & backsplash options that really pulled my kitchen together, plus all the details like sink, knobs and faucets etc. They were quick to schedule, handled a complex schedule quite well (I was also coordinating with a flooring replacement) and were very professional. They respond immediately to phone calls and emails, and their weren't any unpleasant surprises. Nice to work with.

There is no higher complement to our company when we get to work with previous clients again. Thanks for the kind words.
The crew started on the date we had scheduled, November 3rd. The job was scheduled to take seven days. They tore out all of the old cabinets and removed old appliances. They were good about cleaning up behind themselves as they went along with the job. The first day they hit a glitch when it was discovered that the soffit that was at one end of the kitchen and that was to be removed to accommodate taller cabinets actually contained a support beam and would not be able to be removed. This required new cabinets to be ordered. The contractor, Dave Carver, placed a rush order for the replacement cabinets and the workers proceeded to do as much work as they could complete without those cabinets. The countertop people came on November 11, on schedule, and measured for the new granite countertops since all of the bottom cabinets had been installed. However, the kitchen had to remain unfinished while we waited for the remaining cabinets. On the 20th or 21st of November, the crew returned to install the cabinets that had been reordered. They discovered that one of the cabinets was incorrect and would again have to be reordered. Unfortunately because we were now into the holiday season, the manufacturer did not do "rush" orders so it would not arrive until December 16th. The countertop was installed on November 24th, on schedule and I was able to get back into my kitchen and get most everything set back up although the one cabinet was still missing. Finally, on December 16th the crew was able to come back and install the last cabinet and finish up the tile work. I'm not going to say this was the ideal situation or that I was never frustrated or disappointed by the delays. But for me, the final product is what it's all about and I have to say that my kitchen looks amazing. The contractor and the crew were always considerate, conscientious, and actually did some nice extras for me to make up for the inconvenience. As I told Dave, the final outcome was well worth the wait!

We hope to make you happy on your next project as well. Thanks for the business.
Very courteous and professional. The window replacement was excellent. They were clearly skilled in exterior trim/flashing work. The final look from the outside is great. The interior trim work was okay. This was completely new woodwork, the previous windows did not have any. The price was reasonable and saved us time and effort either doing it ourselves after the windows were installed or hiring out the woodwork to a specialized woodworking contractor. When we had a question about how they were installing the trim, they were very accommodating and worked with us to get the trim looking the way we envisioned. I do not believe the window installer specialized in trim work. If I had to do over, I would either hire out the trim work to a separate contractor or just have the window installers cut and nail the trim then finish myself or hire a painter. The caulking over the nail holes and seams was done somewhat quickly and its required sanding and recaulking then finish painting. In the end, the trim looks great and we are happy, it is just a bit more work then we had hoped for. To reiterate though, the quality of the window and install of the windows was excellent and we'd definitely have them back. Down the road, we'd consider Carver and Sons for other projects at our house. In fact, they installed our doors several years ago and we are extremely happy with them.
Description of Work: Replace 13 windows with Polaris windows. 5 casement twins, 6 sliders, 1 double-hung twin, 1 awning. All with screens. 2 bath windows have obscure glass. Replaced marble sills in 9 openings with wood sills. Installed wood trim for these 9 openings. Delivered wood trim to us ahead of window install so we could pre-paint it. Also replaced 2 windows in basement with glassblock. Included hauling away of old windows and debris.

I emailed and called Carver & Sons to see if someone could come out and do an estimate for us to remodel our bathroom. It took almost a week for someone to even get back with us or acknowledge our interest. The person who finally called was Rich. We scheduled for him to come out a few days later to check out the bathroom. Rich was 15 minutes late. No call. No apology. When I showed him the bathroom, I could tell he he'd lost all interest. His first question was what our budget was- not "what are you wanting to do"or "what are your ideas for this space." I told him a figure, but I also told him that this was our first experience doing any remodeling and we were flexible with our budget. I also told him that we planned on trying to sell our house in the near future, so we were not interested in doing an expensive remodel, but not one that was necessarily cheap, either. I also made it clear that this was not just a chance for them to do our bathroom, but that we have a kitchen remodel and a couple of other projects that we will need done in the near future. Rich expressed to me that we could do some of the demo work ourselves to save money- which was fine. I still wanted to get an estimate of what labor and materials would cost, however. After about ten minutes of him poo-pooing any ideas or questions I had, Rich asked me if Ï even wanted him to do an estimate." I told him that I did want to see what a price and design would be, as they had great reviews on Angie's List. However, at this point, with his unenthusiastic attitude, I was pretty much done anyway. It's been over three weeks and, no surprise, I have not heard a peep from Rich or anyone else at Carver and Sons. I'm glad that others have had success with this business, it just wasn't our experience.
Description of Work: Wanted to get an estimate for our sole bathroom to be remodeled. Needed new tiling throughout the entire shower and new floor (subfloor and tiling). Also wanted to replace the sink, eliminate a drop ceiling, and put an electrical outlet in. Our house is older and our bathroom is tiny, but it was expressed that there were a couple of other projects (including a kitchen remodel) that we might do in the near future, as well.

I met with [member name removed] to discuss remodeling that she was interested in having done to her upstairs bath. Was late to the appointment, and I did apologize. I knew as per our phone conversation when the appointment was set she had a limited amount of time before she had to leave for work. We discussed replacing the existing floor and the tile in tub/ shower area with the original cast iron tub. (the house is 80-90 years old) She also mentioned eliminating the drop ceiling and replacing the sink. The floor was very uneven, creaked loudly when walked upon and was going to require removal of all layers including subfloor prior to the installation of any tile. No part of the bath was in solid condition. This was all discussed prior to any mention of budget or costs. [member name removed] mentioned that they were fixing up the bath for a future listing of the house for sale. The average cost of a small bath remodel is 15k plus, not JCS’s number but from ‘Remodeling’ Cost vs Value Report for Cincinnati. Knowing what the costs were going to likely be, I asked [member name removed] if they (her and her husband) had a budget in mind for the project. At the same time I suggested if possible, perhaps they could do some of the work to reduce the costs. She mentioned that they had a friend that was a plumber who could possibly help them. [member name removed] also told me what her husband expected the cost for the work to be. She said he might possibly spend more but did not know. She said they could not justify spending much more, and that she would rather save any additional money for the next house. It was not a question of a doing cheap job, or an expensive one. It was about doing what was needed for the new work to stay intact and be warranted. I told her that we could not do an adequate job for the amount they were planning on spending. Just as [member name removed] and her husband cannot spend five times what they had allotted for the project, JCS cannot provide the proper materials and labor for 20% of the real cost. I spent additional time, giving her ideas for things they could possibly do and expressed sincere regret that I was not able to help her.

The job was completed in about two months. I dealt directly with Dave Carver. They were very flexible. They were more than accommodating and I provided a lot of the materials which saved on a lot on the costs. When the job was complete, they cleaned up well and there was no mess left behind. I was very happy with their work. They may not be the lowest in cost, but they are worth it and provide great quality of work. I had a friend who had received a bid from Jim Carver and Sons, but they chose Home Depot for the job because they were less in cost. By the end of the job, Home Depot had tagged on so many additional fees that the bid from Jim Carver and sons was less than the final cost they ended up paying. I would hire them again. I have referred them to neighbors and they have ended up doing two other jobs in my neighborhood.

Overall, the process was relatively smooth. Steve Carver, the person who sells doors with the company, came for a quote and provided an estimate for the doors. We called Carver & Sons in March to give us an estimate for our master bathroom. They came out to photograph and take measurements very quickly after our initial call. We worked with Dave Carver and he was very punctual, polite, and had a great attention to detail. My husband and I did our due diligence, and collected several different quotes for the project. I will say that Carver's was the most expensive. We decided that since this was a project we would likely only do once, we should do it right. Dave Carver gave us a very organized plan and invited us to his showroom to discuss the finer points and pick out materials. It was great to be able to go to one place and see and touch all of the materials. Dave called us a week before they were scheduled to start work to tell us they were able to start early! This was very exciting, given the fact that our bathroom was completely out of commission! The crew arrived early on that Monday morning and got straight to work. Adam and Eddy were very nice and hardworking. They were great with our 3 young children always asking questions and our yellow lab always under their feet! They were very good about keeping us informed with their progress and checking with us about how we wanted things to look as they went. Everything stayed on schedule and the end result is absolutely beautiful! I am a firm believer that you get what you pay for, and Carver & Sons has reaffirmed that for us! In my mind, this was money well spent! Looking forward to having Carver & Sons create a new kitchen for us in the future! We have told everyone we know what a great experience this was, and will continue to tell anyone who will listen. We are currently the first set of pictures on their website under portfolio, and then click on bathrooms (if you are interested in seeing the beautiful transformation)!

Salesman came out on 7/7/14 to look at a complete master bath remodel. Replace double vanity and sink, remove all stand up shower and replace with all tile including the floor, new tile around whirlpool tub, new tile bath/water closet floor and 2 walkin closets. After TWO weeks of waiting for the estimate I called them asking about it, I was told that it would take two more days. Received call two days later saying it would be another couple of days. Asked a manager or owner to call use today, received call and was told that the sales have been very good but they were busy working with signed customers and needed a few more days to completed ours. If we wanted he could ask the salesman to not send the estimate. I feel this is a local business that does not want or need any additional customers. I hope they do better work than they do with sales. I have opted out of an estimate, but wish I could have supported a local business even though I have heard they are very high priced.

I wish to state as politely as possible, that our process does take time to measure, design, estimate and quote. The designer on this particular job, got a little behind and he called the home owner to to apologize and to express that he needed more time. At that point they ask to talk to a manager. I call them back to apologize for the extra days it would take and my apology was not good enough. There is nothing more at that point I could do. I hope that their speedy contractor of choice, creates a beautiful wonderful space for them to enjoy like our crew and design staff would have created for them. Good luck with project!

The job could not have gone better. My expectations were exceeded every step of the way. I have been an Angie's list member for a couple of years and have used the service to do a couple of large projects on the exterior and interior of my home. I had looked at doing these two bathrooms a couple of years ago with a Super Service Award Winner who provided me an estimate. I was pleased with the providers estimate and consulting skills but had sticker shock and decided to do my exterior projects first that year. I spent a lot more money on the exterior projects but felt I was getting more done for the dollars spent at that time. That provider was Sawdust Therapy. I was so pleased with Sawdust Therapy I wanted them to do the bathrooms. I contacted them and they were booked solid for months in advance. I was willing to wait and did so for a number of months but I had a personal health issue come up that required me to move up my time line to get the job done. Sawdust Therapy's owner consulted with me and I had to look at different vendors. I contacted again the original Plumbing/Remodel contractor from a couple years ago and paid $90.00 for an estimate. They sent a great employee out to do all the preliminary measurement and consulting of both baths. I was sure that they would most likely get the business and I did feel very confident with them from my original contact. Due diligence, thank goodness, made me want to get another estimate. I found Jim Carver and Sons on Angie's List and read all the reviews. I thought frankly that they could do a great job but would be way out of my price range. I spoke with Dave Carver by phone about the project and the first meeting was at his office. Dave asked me to bring some basic measurements and a couple pictures of the spaces. At the appointment I got a good overview of the company and their showroom. Frankly my heart sank a little as I looked around the showroom and potential products. I just knew that I probably would not be able to afford what I was seeing. Dave asked a lot of questions and then asked if he could make a visit to my home. I set that appointment up but told my wife we were probably going to love the ideas but they were probably out of our league. Dave spent about an hour in our home taking measurements, more pictures and more questions. We set another appointment at his office about one week later to review the estimate and suggested materials that might be used. During this time I heard back from the first vendor and they had a phone conversation with me going over their estimate and some solutions. I requested that the information we had talked about be sent to me in writing and I did get an email a couple of days later. No problems at this point with this vendor although I did expect a bit more detailed written document in light of a quote that was in the $30,000.00 range and I had paid up front $90.00 for the estimate. At my appointment with Carver I received a very detailed line item quote for both bathrooms including time line for both jobs, labor, fixture pricing etc. Dave was also very upfront about fixture costs for plumbing and lighting. One of his vendors was Grohe, a German Company, that he liked to use for plumbing fixtures due to quality and reliability. He indicated on the fixtures I could select another vendor from Home Depot as well as the lighting fixtures. He indicated I might save a fair amount of money. After reviewing the quote for a couple days I went back and made some selections for tile, doors etc. I did my own research on plumbing and light fixture vendors outside of what Dave suggested and found that yes I could save a fair amount of money I was not really comparing apples to apples I moved forward with all the selections and frankly left thinking his quote would be on the low end $4,000 more than the other vendor. I was wrong. The quote came back about $1,5000-1,800.00 higher. At this point I knew just from the follow up, detail of the quote, the contract itself and the drawings/pictures of what the finished product might looked like that I needed to go with Carver and Son's. There was no comparison and although I was confident with the other vendor of doing a good job I was more than positive I would get more for the extra money I would spend with Carver. We started the project on 9 June with his employees Shawn Blank and Tony Griffith. These young men were outstanding. Communication skill on a daily basis, work ethic and an overview of what was going to happen each day was provided without us ever having to ask. The second day in they ran into a drain problem downstairs that would have easily warranted them calling in a plumber but they offered to try some solutions on their own. They spent about 3 hours that morning resolving the issue and twice I offered them a willingness to just call a plumber. They kept at it and probably saved me at a minimum $500.00. My wife and I were so grateful and hooked them up the next day with a great lunch in our home. Remodeling baths is a messy and noisy job. These guys cleaned up the work areas daily way beyond our expectations and never took any shortcuts in protecting carpet and other surfaces in our home. The drywall work they had to do was excellent and they were on time every day. I did not ever think I would find a better group of workmen than Sawdust Therapy's crew but I was wrong. Tony and Shawn really represented their company well and the skill level they had was awesome. The job went well and was actually done prior to the estimated time. We ended up being charged less than the estimate due to the time saved. I had one follow up call two days after the job was completed and the next day Tony was out to resolve the issue. Bottom line I almost short changed myself by assuming Carver and Sons was out of my price range. I am glad I just hung in with their process and let Dave Carver lead the discovery process in assessing our needs and helping me build a budget. Dave gave me a clear vision of what to expect and the end result. The other vendor, although very reliable and would have done a good job, did not come close to the detail that built confidence and the vision we needed to make a commitment. I would urge anyone to give this company a look. Everyone has a budget and you might be surprised at the flexibility and out of the box thinking someone like Carver and Son's can provide.
