"After reading this review, we spoke with this client about the bids because it always gets our attention when we are so far above other quotes. We quoted a water-based polyurethane refinish, which is more expensive than the alternative, which is an oil-based finish. The client had an oil-based refinish done. While oil-based is easier to work with, clients have to leave the house for several days due to the slow dry time of the polyurethane. Water-based dries in a matter of hours, which means it can be applied in the morning and the client can walk on it in the afternoon. Thus, they can stay in the home. Another advantage of water-based is that it is harder than oil. Because a water-based finish, with its rapid drying time, is harder to work with, it requires special training. In our experience, few installers in this area have formal training in water-based refinishes. However, our installer has been certified by Bona, a leading company in hardwood flooring installation, care, and maintenance. Another price consideration is the grade of wood. While we didn't verify the grade of wood that was used by the client's installer, we quoted the "Select" grade of hardwood. This is the highest grade, above Number 1 Common, Number 2 Common, and Cabin. Typically, one of the Common grades is quoted. In terms of response time, it was a couple of weeks before we could get a Design Associate out to him. While this is unusual, it does occasionally occur. However, once we met we had a quote to him that day. It's hard to know exactly why our quote was higher than everyone else's without seeing the other quotes. But what we do know is the home is vitally important to the health and well-being of the family. Because of this belief, we obtain the best materials and employ the best methods for the job, and we engage the best installers we can find. Thus, we do not strive to charge the lowest price but to provide the greatest value. However, we are grateful this client took the time to give us feedback. Here was a motivated, careful buyer who went to the trouble of interviewing several flooring companies. He was being very diligent. In our presentation, we failed to communicate clearly and powerfully the method we were proposing, it's advantages and costs. And we didn't price out the oil-based approach, to give him a comparison. "We find it much better to visit the home during the design/selection phase because we can get a better feeling for the lifestyle and for the physical environment. And we're very concerned with providing carpet that will last. The other day we were browsing through the carpet displays in a big box store. The prices looked quite low, but when we lifted the sample up and read the specs on the display board underneath, we discovered that all the samples were polyester. It was no wonder that all the prices looked so good: polyester is 40% cheaper than nylon. But, because polyester gets crushed down in normal use, we only recommend it for rental property or for sellers who need an inexpensive carpet that is clean and fresh. Nylon springs back, and is really the only good choice for the long term. Because the installer is the key to the success of any flooring project, we put a lot of emphasis on finding motivated and skilled craftspeople. "An excellent choice for the floor of a laundry room is luxury vinyl, although the product isn't as well known as other flooring materials, especially in the Midwest. Luxury vinyl is a significant upgrade in quality from the old sheet vinyl that almost everyone dislikes. This relatively new flooring product comes in either tiles (for a ceramic tile look) or in planks (for a hardwood look.) It looks great, is very durable, sounds good when you walk on it, but most importantly for a laundry room, it is water resistant. So, if the washing machine starts leaking water, the luxury vinyl will survive. "On the first install, we took a chance on an installer who had installed other materials for us and who claimed they could install ceramic tile. Since this was a small job, we gave the installer a chance. It did not go well. The installer put in a wood trim piece in one doorway, which is not what is typically used. In addition, the piece was mis-positioned in the doorway. The client pointed out some other errors as well, mainly having to do with trim work.. However, our design associate noticed that the tiles had not been laid as we had specified. We called for the tiles to be staggered on the thirds, that is, each tile in the next row over would be offset a third the length of a tile from the tiles in the previous row. As it was, the tiles were just laid straight across, which did not look very good. For someone not in the tile business, the aesthetics of the layout wouldn't immediately stand out, but the design associate knew right off that the floor would look much better with the staggered layout. The design associate explained the layout problem and told the client the floor would have to be torn up and replaced. We ordered new tile and had a proven ceramic installer do the work. The new floor looks beautiful. Of course, the client did not pay for the extra materials or labor. Occasionally a job goes awry, but when it does happen, we are determined to make it right. This client is now delighted, would use us again, and would recommend us to others.
