I contacted Classy Craftsmen per Angie's List. I talked to Dave the owner and/or contact person. I shared my need to have an outside accessable door to be evaluated for repair, allowing the door to be closed properly. He sounded professional and friendly, but referred twice to this request as a small job. (Small to him, a need for me). He was to check with his crew and call me back. I never got a return call. I perform customer service daily in my profession and I feel if he did not wish to do this "small job" he should have called back and let me know he couldn't do this, allowing me to seek other help.

Dave spent about 3 hours visiting with us first , going over all the possible ways our kitchen could be redone. We explained that we wanted to retain the vintage feel of the kitchen, while bringing it up to date and making it more functional. He came up with a detailed list of all the aspects of the job and even a computer-generated drawing of the eventual layout of our new kitchen. The guys (Greg, Joe, Brady, and Harlan) worked very hard and were patient with our questions and concerns as the job progressed. If you want slight modifications done on the fly, or you notice something not right, they will make it right without complaint. Because we were trying to do this on a budget, several things had to be removed from the initial quote and now in hindsight removing those items didn't affect the end result. Because we had family coming to visit from out of town, we gave Dave a deadline to complete the job and he met it. Yes, you may find a contractor to do the job cheaper, but hire the Classy Craftsmen if you want a contractor that 1) knows what good quality workmanship and high grade materials are all about 2) Has employees you can trust to be in your home and who have a strong work ethic, good listening skills, and attention to detail. Overall, it went very well and we are extremely happy with our remodeled kitchen.
Description of Work: The Classy Craftsmen re-did our kitchen in a little over a month in the summer of 2012. This was a complicated job because it involved re-configuring, modifying, and refinishing our knotty pine cabinets from the 1950s. They had to remove old linoleum flooring, remove the old wall oven, and the gas range top. Several of the old cupboards were taken back to the shop to get reconfigured. They ended up building a whole new cabinet to go under the kitchen sink, complete with a tall narrow glide out drawer to hold cookie sheets, pizza pans, etc. They also had to reconfigure the cabinet to fit over the fridge and over the rangetop microwave. Glide outs were installed in some of the cabinets. A subcontractor put in new porcelain tile. They installed a new garbage disposal, stainless steel sink, and new kitchen faucet. New knotty pine bead board was installed along one wall of the kitchen. New GFI outlets were installed, along with a power switch for the dishwasher. A couple of new circuits were also added. A couple of old outlets were taken out of commission and the holes patched over. The kitchen was freshly painted. They painstakingly mixed a stain for the newer cupboards and panelling that matched the overall color of the older cupboards. We had granite countertops put in, also by a subcontractor. All demo was hauled away and significant cleanup was involved.

It is so convenient because all I have to do is email the owner, Dave Beck and he responds quickly every time, he'll set up a time and then his worker appears when we agree on a date. I like how they are able to do just about anything.
Description of Work: The worker bought two motion lights, one for the top of the basement steps, the other for the closet in basement, installed them, installed the storm door window, fixed the back door screen, installed 10 year fire alarm batteries. Also put together a small end table. In the past they have done a lot of work for us, they are always excellent in their workmanship. I highly recommend them!

I met with Mr. Beck on May 1st to get an estimate for painting the exterior of my home. When he left he said he would get an estimate to me within a few days. Its been over 2 months and I still have not heard from his company. Apparently after I declined his offer to replace my gutters and power wash my driveway, he wasn't interested in just a paint job.

Response from Classy Craftsmen
I was confused by this report, because I had sent quote same week as my visit. No response usually means no interest, and I don't typically pester people with follow-up calls. We keep plenty busy with doing that. Following is the quote... I resent this morning... with apologies, and an offer to begin work as soon as tomorrow if she will have us. From: Dave Beck [mailto:dmbeck@cinci.rr.com] Sent: Friday, May 4, 2012 7:01 PM To: Member ******** Subject: Proposal for Ext. Paint Classy Craftsmen 1445 Colonial Drive Cincinnati OH 45238 Member ******* May 4, 2012 Re: Proposal for Exterior Paint Member, It was a pleasure meeting you this week, and I appreciate this opportunity to offer my company’s services with the following. General Exterior Painting: Scope of this project is to properly prepare and paint all currently-painted elements of your home’s exterior, except no attention to entry doors. Will include double-fascia, rake boards, soffits, gutters and spouts, windows and associated trim, front entry alcove, garage doors, general house trim, rear bay and bump-out, lattice structure, rear steps and railings, metal lentils and flashings. Specifics of our service will include… • Remove window screens, and mark to ensure proper reinstallation. • Pressure-clean to remove dirt, and to identify/lift failed paint and caulk. • Protect porch, sidewalks, driveway, landscape, etc., as needed, using drop-cloths and/or plastic. • Scrape with carbide tools to remove loose paint, failed caulk, etc. During this important process, we thoroughly inspect for rot and otherwise-compromised elements. Please see “Repairs” below. • Seal bare wood and new work, using bonding/blocking primer. • Address any rust issues using rust-inhibitive primer. • Caulk joinery and around windows and doors, using flexible paintable product rated for no less than 35 years. • Apply two coats Sherwin-Williams Duration acrylic self-priming house paint, match to Porter “Winter Wheat”, satin sheen. • Clean exterior of all windows, and clean/reinstall screens. • Remove debris from gutters. • Collect all project-related debris from landscape, sweep of porch, sidewalks, driveway. • Leave remaining paint in clearly-labeled container, for your future use/reference. Total for the above, complete with all necessary labor and materials, will be $5800. Basketball Goal: Includes post and articulating arms only. Rusty. We will remove rust, prime with rust-preventive, and apply two coats of rust-inhibitive enamel, black gloss. $230 Repairs: During course of the exterior painting project, it is not uncommon that we identify rot or other issues requiring attention. I don’t anticipate anything major on your home, since your windows have been recently repaired by others but it’s likely we will find a few areas in need of repair. We will bring any such issues to your attention, and repair with your authorization on a time-plus-materials basis, at $65/hr for skilled and well-equipped carpenter. Floodlight and Door Hardware: Rear floodlight needs replacement, and front and rear door hardware are badly tarnished. If you have new items on site, we will gladly install with same terms as in “Repairs” item. Please remember bulbs. If you would like for us to purchase, we can do so for reimbursement at cost. I believe the above covers what we discussed, and then some. Please let me know if I’ve forgotten anything. Payment for completed work is appreciated on receipt of invoice. Cash, or check made to Classy Craftsmen at the above address. Our schedule as of this date would allow completion of all quoted items by end of June10. I hope the above is acceptable, Sylvia. If we are favored with your business, you can count on superior workmanship delivered by courteous conscientious professionals. Please call or email if you or Robert have questions on any of the above, or if you wish to accept and proceed. FYI, we also do general interior painting and remodeling of all types, kitchen and bath, flooring, tile work, basements, custom built-ins, gutters, roofing, outdoor entertaining areas, and more. I’ve attached sample photos of some of our recent work…. some relevant to quoted work, some not so much, but I think they at least illustrate our range of capabilities, and a commitment to quality. From start to finish, Dave Beck and his crew were extremely responsive and professional. They arrived each day when they said they would, they were very tidy and we could not be any happier with the work that they did. If there were any issues or questions that we had, Dave Beck got back to us immediately. He is also very good about presenting several options when necessary . This is a very professional, well-run company that takes pride in the work that they do.
Description of Work: Virtually a total redo of our basement, including drywall repair, opening part of the stairwell and replacing it with a wonderful bannister, constructing a built-in book case in the office area, re-tiling and replacing all fixtures in the bathroom, replacing the carpet and light fixtures and painting the entire basement.

He was great and all of his guys were great. I would definitely have them back if ever needed again. I had a couple of bids and they were higher, but they did so much more. It was a fair price that I paid.
Description of Work: Classy Craftsmen gave my kitchen a facelift, no major construction, but they put up a tile backsplash, worked on my cabinets a little bit, and added some storage for me. They put in crown molding in the family room and wood trim around the family room window. They also painted and were here for about a week.

In September, 2009, Classy Craftsmen painted the exterior trim and gutters of my house. During the estimating process, I clearly told the owner, Dave Beck, that scaffolding would need to be included in the bid because my house has a clay tile roof. He didn't include scaffolding in the bid, and when I questioned him about it he verbally explained that his guys deal with walking on tile roofs all the time using foam rubber under their feet to protect the tile. I was still trepidatious about it but he convinced me this method would be okay. The bid accepted, a two-man team promptly showed up every morning by 7:00 AM when I left for work. This was a pleasant sight to see and appreciated, however, I would always be nervous when I'd see a guy up on the roof. Afterall, the rather big and tall man of the crew was the one always up there, an unfortunate choice of a man to be walking on a tile roof. I would see foam rubber under his feet, but not always, or the foam rubber would be all askew and under one foot and not the other, under one knee and not the other. My gut feeling was that he may have dispensed with the use of the foam rubber entirely after I left for work. Long story short, after the painting was completed , I noticed several cracked tiles leading up to a window above my lower roof. It was if one could see every step the man took. My first thought was, "I knew it! You just wait, that roof is going to leak now!". That same evening I contacted Dave via email to report the damage, and after convincing him that, no, the cracks were not there before, he set up a roofer to come over and seal the cracks with some kind of clear caulking. The cracks were clean breaks but the roofer didn't even seal them flush again, but I figured he knew what he was doing. Well, just six months later my roof started leaking in the approximate area of the fractured tile. Of course, all that time later I couldn't come back on Classy Craftsmen, or his roofer who performed a temporary fix with a cheap sealant instead of replacing the broken tiles (as was explained to me later by my roofer) because I couldn't prove it, but I think it would be obvious to most why the roof started leaking. Ultimately, I deducted $500.00 from my payment. Not only did the painters crack my tile, but they also left dripping paint on an attic window and didn't bother painting the front porch, which was included in the bid. Also, Dave's clean up person used my brooms (one of which he broke its handle in two and said nothing, just put it back in its place), other implements and my garbage can to remove debris. I had to take the debris out of the can myself and bag it up, plus had to do a lot of the clean up myself after the clean up guy left! Not to mention that a friend of mine was outside my house when Dave came by to review things and was told that his guys had performed a messy job. 20/20 hindsight, I should have deducted at least $3,000.00 from my payment -- but that doesn't even cover my subsequent roof repairs! If I could I would sue the crap out of Classy Craftsmen, and I'm not even the suing kind!

Initially Dave seemed like the perfect guy for the job. Although he missed the initial appointment due to a clock setting from daylight savings, he was more than willing to accomodate for it by showing up at a time most convenient to me. We really like him during the initial meet and great, and described all the jobs we wanted him to bid on. He even offered to tackle our kitchen remodel project and suggested he was really good at it and would come up with a plan. It took a week or so to get the initial bid, but I was understanding because his Dave's mom was in the hospital. He quoted 85% of the items, including restoring a fireplace where he went out of his way to go out and locate tile for us. We gave him a go ahead to work on restoring the fireplace while we were discussing options for screen doors and the porch railings. The appointment was set a week out, and we sent him pictures so he could discuss the job with the guy coming out to work on the tile. After discussing some of the other quotes, I decided to wait to see how the fireplace job went before having him work on any of the other jobs. Two weeks went by, and no response. Having been burnt by several contractors over the past half a year, I refuse to chase someone who won't follow up on an obligation. A week after the job date came and went, I sent Dave an email asking why he dropped the ball. I told him that I wanted to know the excuse because he failed to deliver as promised. He then went on a rant in his emails to me about his mom being in the hospital, sent me a picture of his mom, and put all the blame on me because I didn't quickly award him the bid on another job. He agreed that I was very clear about him starting the fireplace work right away and I was scheduled, but assumed because I didn't grant him the other work right away that it was some sort of all or nothing deal. He knew that I was having other bids on the concrete and railing work per the emails I sent. He also then stroked his own ego and told me about his MBA, and how he didn't like having me point out to him that he dropped the ball. Apparently it was my fault that I didn't send him a follow up note to remind him of his obligation. I am very fortunate I didn't go with Dave on any of my work. I have many rentals, and have never met someone with such an ego. He was more expensive than many of the contractors I had bid on the work, but I was hoping quality would make up for it. Apparently his ego got in the way. I would not recommend working with Dave.

The way our yard sloped, every time it rained, water would settle right around one corner of our house... and after all the rain we had this summer, it found it's way in the basement. Every time it rained, we'd have water in the basement. Dave came out to give me a quote on a French Drain installation to get the water away from the house. I got 4 quotes, and his quote was lower 2 of them... and the other one wasn't able to get started for another few months... so I went with Classy Craftsmen, and glad I did. He was very responsive every time I contacted him with a question, very professional in all my dealings with him, helped explain everything to me so that I'd understand exactly what was happening, they did the job quickly, and the French Drain is doing exactly as we hoped it would... we're very pleased with everything. I won't hesitate to use them again for future jobs

Dave with Classy Craftsmen quoted me for painting my basement's concrete floor. While it was going to be more money than I hoped to pay, he was still lower than 3 of his competitors which I also found through Angie's List. Even though I decided to do the job on my own opposed to hiring Classy Craftmen, Dave still provided me with a wealth of knowledge as to how to go about doing the project on my own. I was so impressed with his customer service (even though I'm not a customer yet), that I am having him quote me on replacing all the windows in my house. I would definitely recommend you have Dave at Classy Craftsmen quote you on any projects around your house!!!

We contacted Classy Craftsmen to come to our house and give us an estimate for the following: wallpaper removal in 2 halls and three bedrooms with drywall repair as needed; each area was then to be painted. We also wanted the drywall repair and painting of two other rooms which did not have wall paper. Dave Beck came to our house and spent a lot of time with us. We told him we wanted the work to begin in January. He seemed very nice and acted like he wanted the job. He even told us who on his crew would be doing the job and how good these employees were. He told us he would do the estimate over the weekend and get back with us. We never heard from him again. We feel that if he didn't want the job, he should have told us and not wasted any more of his or our time. We have since signed a contract with another company.

Talked to Dave Beck who informed me that it wasn?t an Allen wrench that I needed but a square drive, and that I could pick up a set at any local hardware store. I did just what he said, found the square drive, and had it fixed it in minutes. I really appreciate a contractor who will go out of their way to give a little helpful advice. He could have offered none, and tried to convince me that I needed a service call, but he didn?t. In fact, at one point we lost cell phone contact and he called me back. That's pretty nice.
Description of Work: Had a kitchen cabinet door that began to creep open and just didn’t want to stay closed. The hinges are on the inside of the door; I adjusted them but that didn’t fix the problem. Bought a new hinge but couldn’t find an Allen wrench that fit to remove the old one. Called Classy Craftsman for some advice.

The owner emailed us an estimate and scheduled within our time constraints and his crew came on a saturday to finish on time. We were pleased with the service.
Description of Work: We had additional lighting added to our basement family room, can lights, track lights, dimmers and new wiring to split power source. We received our estimate and had a short timeline to get the work completed before the rest of our project could be completed. We were pleased with the work, his team of workers were thorough, they matched the lightd to the plan our cabinetmaker had sent and it came our precisely. The crew cleaned up after themselves and they had cut open the ceiling and repaired and repainted it beautifully. The price seemed a bit high but we were pleased with the result.

It started off well with the company being responsive. However, they canceled the appointment because I had another company also coming to give me an estimate. With a serious issue like a leak roof, it is vital to get multiple estimates and opinions on what the issue is. This company would only provide an estimate if I didn't get any second opinions. This seems very questionable and tells me that the company is afraid of competition but instead is looking to get work from consumers who are uninformed. The tone of the representative was very unprofessional and the mere act of canceling an estimate because of competition is also very unprofessional.
Description of Work: I had a water leak that was coming into my bedroom. I called the company to arrange an appointment but they cancelled the next day because I was also having another company to give an estimate. They were willing to do a "free" estimate but only if they were the only company so that they could guarantee that I would be forced to use them.

Response from Classy Craftsmen
I was under the impression that this was an emergency roof repair. This member called in a panic, looking for help with a serious leak pouring into two levels of her home during a three-day rain… at which time we were getting many similar calls for help. We agreed to a visit the next day, during a window of time chosen by her. She then broke our appointment by having another contractor at her home for the same work during the time we had agreed upon. I told her that since she had someone already on site, she should have that person take care of the repair, and we would move on to other folks who needed emergency assistance. Most roof repairs are simple, cost less than $200, and make sense to be done in first visit. Multiple bids are a great idea for substantial projects… not so much for emergency roof repairs.
