Building Character LLC

Not fully completed. Did railing well. Boards repaired poorly. Nails pulling up within a couple of weeks. I called them many times to repair: and screw down: never did. They bragged about doing multiple coats of stain. Not true. Could still see raw wood peeking through stain on railing sides. Again: they said they would put more stain down: but said I needed to find the little bitty can they left. Couldn’t find it and never saw it to begin with. There was also some confusion about the pricing. In the end, I thought it was a good job so didn’t mind the “misunderstanding” with price. But with boards lifting and seeing raw wood through the stain: and them NOT repairing these problems: very poor workmanship and customer service.

They did an excellent job. We have a very old deck that is huge. They got it really clean during the power washing. We purchased the stain, which we prefer. They did a great job applying it. While purchasing the stain, someone from Building Character provided much needed advice based on photos I sent of our deck. He did this on a Friday night and it allowed me to purchase the best stain for our deck!

Not sure how much was done as we were out of state when work was performed. Should have had pictures requested for before and after. After sale of house ended up replacing majority of deck boards to pass house inspections.

They came in on time the first day and gave a detailed quotation on the work. Repair deck, pressure wash and come back to apply stain. Good fast work on the first day where they nailed down loose boards and ground away the old solid stain. They pressure washed it. Due to rain the restain was delyed for about 2 weeks. Scheduling could be better. Overall good work. Nice attention to detail.

They were on time for the pressure washing and later sealing of the main deck. We supplied the Thompson's Water Seal. We have a smaller second deck that is a little less than 16X12, no steps or railings - just a flat slab. They wanted an astonishing $400 to do the 16X12 second deck that would have taken no more than 1 1/2 hrs for one person. We ended up doing the second deck ourselves. When they came to apply the sealant, they said their sprayer was broken so they would have to use brushes to apply it. After a couple of rainy days we noticed that although the water seemed to bead up at first, the deck was getting completely soaked. I made an appointment for one of their guys to come back to inspect late Monday morning. I got home to meet him, and instead listened to a voicemail saying he wasn't coming because it had rained and he was busy elsewhere. I called him back, got voicemail, told him it was a perfect time to see it because of the rain. I've never heard back from anyone. I decided to give Angie's List a second chance after having a bad experience with another one of their contractors a number of years ago. Never again! The way they have their "reviews" set up, it's actually hard to give a bad review unless you do it in writing as I've done. Otherwise, you are given choices for only five questions that just doesn't provide an accurate review of the contractors.

They arrived on time, completed the job within the given timeframe and did a good job.

Start to finish, a professional job and great communication. My deck is over 20 years old, and looks like new, The privacy fence wasn't installed properly to begin with (20+ years ago), and has been abused over time. BV was very upfront about the condition and that they couldn't power wash it. I'm glad, and my neighbors are glad too:) I did ask them to give me an estimate to replace it, and have confidence that the bid will be fair and the work will be done as expected. I do want to note that I did read a very negative review before hiring them. In my opinion, the person who posted this had unrealistic expectations at best. They did a great job, and even did a few extras at no charge.

They were extremely professional and kept me informed throughout the process. The deck is absolutely solid. They made sure everything was perfect before calling the job complete. I would definitely use them again.

Jared contacted us the day after we bought the deal. We were scheduled for June 5th, which was a little more than a month out so not bad. Just before the 5th Jared let us know he was going to be a day late with another job, so not a big deal. Material was delivered on the 5th and they arrived on the 6th and had the pergola completed in a single day. They had to remove some of the existing patio blocks since the patio was 12' x 12' which added a bit more complication to it, but they did a nice job of only disturbing the blocks needed to get the posts in. Overall we're pleased with the work and the pergola looks very nice.

We purchased a deal on Angie's List to get an inspection. He came out, was on time, friendly, knowledgeable, etc. We asked for an estimate for some work. It took over 2 weeks to get an estimate after reminding him that we were waiting for it. When we initially met with him, we asked for a breakdown of items in the estimate because we weren't sure which services we wanted him to perform. This wasn't included in the original estimate, so we requested it after. We never received a response. It was a disappointing experience. It's too bad because we wanted to give him the business.

The service was excellent . James showed up as scheduled and measured wrote up the job and gave me a copy. After the pressure washing the deck looked better. James explained he could get the stain, but with the specials and rebates I could get a better deal. He did give me a stain color chart for easy selection. I purchased the stain and he returned and finished the job. The deck looks brand new! He also replaced all loose nails! I'm totally satisfied!

The weather proofing looks wonderful. The service was quick, and professional and looks great. There are some issues with the structure that we were unaware of that the serviceman was able to discuss with us. We are very happy with the service and will continue to work with Building Character LLC in the future.

This is an update on a previous poor review. It is now a GLOWING review. Here’s what happened: We purchased a Big Deal to have our back deck cleaned and painted. Originally, James came out to perform the work. Long story short, after he left the deck looked awful. I posted a review and pictures of the work. I was IMMEDIATELY contacted by Jennifer from the company. They were extremely apologetic and acknowledged that this was not the type of work their company stood behind. She sent someone out right away to take a look and make a plan to fix the situation. They had to sand down the whole deck to smooth out the previous issues and then paint with a different stain (that I believe was more expensive). All at no additional expense to us. It now looks AMAZING. They even pounded down the protruding nails and secured a hand rail that was loose. Mistakes and problems occur, but how you address them speaks volumes about your company. These guys are top-notch.

John was very diligent + helpful to us.

I was contacted the same day I bought the deal. He promptly scheduled the service date to evaluate our deck. He painted the deck the same day we decided on the paint color. He was on time for both appointments.

Quick to come out and give estimate. Worked hard to get job done in timely manner. Reasonably priced. Flexible about repairing stairs that were built incorrectly by previous contractor; flexible about allowing us to do a 2 tone staining colors. Increase communication would have allowed initial repair of stairs to go more smoothly.

James responded quickly to set up service date. He arrived on time for both power wash + finish. He was one of the best workers I have ever hired. He is an asset to this company!
