I have a shed with a roof that needed some pretty extensive repairs. Building Character was prompt in coming to give an estimate .. they gave an estimate on the spot and I was especially happy that they came to do the work very quickly. The quality of the work was perfect. I am very happy with the quality, the price and the speed of the service. A+

I will put it on the table right away. The ONLY "B" I have them was for price. I thought I could use their going promotion, but was told for the work I needed done, it was not valid. It was a lot of cleaning / staining (with some sanding)...I totally get this. Just that I was expecting the "deal," and was told it didn't apply. I did however research other "deals." They say i$400 for a deck, but charge extra for stairs and railings. So in the end, maybe it evens out. Now that that's done, so far we love the work John (Jarod's field-man) did. Th deck looks like new. He was out there until the job was genuinely done. Both John and Jarod were very easy to communicate with. John always walked me through what he planned to do. I am passing their info on to friends / neighbors for possible work.

I was very happy with the results. They came in on time and were very professional. These folks were very friendly did the job exactly how I want it to be done. Jared's team also provided some suggestions on deck improvement for the future. I would definitely used them again

Jared came out to give me a price for finish basement of 2500 sqft. He had a lot of great ideas and left no wasted space unturned. He emailed me a couple different designs of rough drawings of floor plans and ideas. I've used Building Character in the past and every time I do Jared seems to amaze me even more with his talent and designs. His work ethic is simply amazing to me. Once we agreed on a price within a week he and his team began to put of framing of walls and interiors. They loaded all the wood in and framed the entire basement in a day and a half. Once that was complete a team of electricians came in the very next day. Within two days they had completed all the rough in for electric. The plumber came out three days later to do plumbing for full bath. They had to bust up concrete to run drains for shower and toilet. Plumbers had everything wrapped up in three days and at that point Jared had said was ready for insulation and sheet rock. Everything was going as planned. This entire project turned out better than I could have ever imagined. The project of the basement just kept rolling in to a beautiful finish product that I will be spending a lot more time in. I felt that his price was very fair compared to others that I had gotten. He was very professional and open minded. I will be recommending Building Character for a long time to come. I contacted Jared via phone to request an estimate, and he arrived as promised a couple of days later. He reviewed the existing deck structure and made recommendations about the overall layout as well as the position and width of the main stairs. After listening to our thoughts about budget and what we wanted to do with the deck, he recommended a picture frame decking design to fully utilize the wood cuts and create a more uniform and pleasing deck surface. He also recommended moving the stairs over to center on the left side of the deck, which would also allow them to be broader and more accessible, and improved on our existing baluster design by providing a sweep gap at the bottom. Our steps off the kitchen were also redesigned to look better and be less obtrusive. We received his estimate (including optional spindle material costs) the next day. We agreed on a payment schedule and signed the contract the following week. Work began on time. Jared's crew arrived the first day to begin removal of the old deck and various odd items left under the deck by the original owners. Weather was a challenge, but over the next three days the old decking was removed, the new deck built and the job site tidied up. I want to especially call out Ron and John for their punctuality, craftsmanship, and responsiveness. At one point I went out to review the previous day's work and noticed a damaged board running down the center of the decking. When I mentioned that to Ron he immediately set about replacing it, then proceeded with the remainder of the work. He also made sure that the stairway rail corners were rounded off for safety. Their attention to detail and work ethic resulted in a beautiful deck we are proud to call our own. We highly recommend Building Character for their quality, workmanship and reasonable cost. After a necessary 90 day wait for the treated lumber to thoroughly dry, Building Character returned to complete the finishing of our deck. With our monsoon-like rains, Jared had to find a two-day window to do the work. He stayed on top of the weather reports and kept us informed of possible dates. We finally got the break we needed and Jared jumped on it. We had a couple of questions concerning color and Jared and his men went the extra mile to ensure that we were totally satisfied with the color. They took extra care to see that the application was done correctly and they regularly checked with us to ensure that we continued to be satisfied with the work. Now that the work is done, we have the best and nicest looking deck in our development. There is no question that the top priority for Building Character, from Jared down through the entire organization, is customer satisfaction.

Finished product looks great. Ron and his crew worked for about two days including about 14 hours on the final day so that we could have the deck ready for the weekend. Ron worked straight through driving rain on that day (and into the night under lights) and never stopped working. They accommodated several special requests I had during the project as well. Jared also rejected the initial lumber package that was sent to the house because he wasn't happy with the quality of the lumber. That's the kind of attention to detail and care that I look for when deciding whether or not to hire the same company again for future projects. A lot of other companies would have just used what was delivered. Very satisfied with the project and I would not hesitate to use their services again.

I bought the deal in March but used it in June. It was very hard to schedule a date because of rain delays, but once they started, the deck was finished as quickly as possible. Jared was very helpful and professional. The only problems we encountered were the fact that their company is not located close enough to our house to know whether it rained and Jon came to complete the job when the wood was still too damp and then one Saturday he came without calling first. The neighbors were having an important outdoor event and we had to reschedule due to the potential product smell drifting over. He had to return the following week. When the job was finished the deck looked great. I was very pleased with the cost and quality of their work

The guy who did the work was friendly enough but always just showed up without notice or an appointment. It took several visits to complete due to weather. I would not use them again due to the lack of professionalism in regards to not making appointments or giving prior notice that they were coming.

They took pains to talk with my husband about what needed to be done. They were very professional, thorough and detail oriented. They did a very nice job and a 21 year old deck looks brand new.

He was nice but the deal didn't cover very much of our deck for the price of the deal.

I purchased Big Deal for $199 and was contacted quickly. I identified approximate dates and when weather got warm, they got me on schedule. They came Saturday 5/30 and power washed and returned 6/6 to seal. Very thorough job!

Jared and his team did a great job, and my deck is a safer place now. When I contacted Jared, I thought one side of my deck was sinking, possibly without appropriate concrete footers? The gutter wasn't draining properly and the door frame on the screen room was deformed and the door was difficult to close. Jared proposed lifting everything back to where it belonged, and reinforcing it with kickers (extra pieces of wood on either side of the posts) and added bolts. He said it was constructed with 4x4s where he would have used 6x6s but it was possible to make it work. I had contacted Jared more than a month before the work was done, but I had some other work being done near the deck, and wanted to wait for it to be completed until he started. When I finally contacted him that the other work was almost done, he was ready to go within just a few days. I think I contacted him Tuesday or Wednesday, and the work was completed Saturday. A team of two arrived before 1:00, and worked steadily until 7:00 when it was complete. If the deck continues to be a problem in the future, Jared will be the first person I call to determine next steps.

No problems at all except for the weather. The workers showed up when they said they would, moved right along and got the job done. There was a day or so's wait for the deck to dry out before painting because of rain. The deck looks great and their color suggestion was right on target.

I called and spoke with Mr. Riddell about coming out to do and estimate for a deck. Mr. Riddell indicated I can choose either 5p on Saturday 23-May or 5p on Sunday 24-May. I completely rearranged my plans to accommodate Mr. Riddell's availability. On Sunday, about 15 minutes after his scheduled appointment time I reached out to Mr. Riddell to see if he was having trouble finding my home. He indicated first he didn't have an appointment with me, then upon further questioning, Mr. Riddell admitted he made an "honest" mistake. I expressed my disappointment with this as I had changed my plans to meet his needs. I told Mr. Riddell that if he were interested in placing a bid on my job he would now need to accommodate my schedule and offered my first appointment on the first business day. Mr. Riddell mumbled something and terminated the call. I would strongly recommend considering all other options before Mr. Riddell. In my opinion. based on my experience with him, I find him to be unreliable and unprofessional. He may do the best work in the world, but it doesn't make up for his lack of consideration and professionalism.

Started with Angie's List deal, deck size larger than deal included, contractor willing to work with me to get service rendered.

It took a while to schedule the work, but once I was promised a date they came, kept me well informed of progress and problems and came back to make sure we were happy

The deck has never looked better. I would definitely use this company again.

It went very well. This is a rental house so Jared provided before and after pictures but the deck looks lovely and my tenants are thrilled. The work was done quickly and as promised.

If you are wanting to build a deck, Jared Riddell and Building Character is the way to go. His crew is very efficient, and they provide quality work. I originally planned to construct the deck myself, so I put in a lot of research on how I wanted to build it. I even drafted my own design which I never told Jared about. The first time he came out to my house to look at the build site and to go over what I was planning, he made a suggestion on how I should place the stairs that made a huge improvement in the design. He even used the same size or larger beams and posts than I planned for, and I was already going above what is normally required. In the end, he constructed a beautiful deck that is solid, and will last a very long time. If you want a quality deck, you need to contact Jared.

Overall I would rate Building Character's service pretty good. They stuck to their quote, worked quickly, and listened to our feedback and adjusted accordingly. There were a couple of cosmetic things that held me back from saying the work was excellent, and we probably could've been more vocal to get some of the additional things, but that's more on us than them. For example, Jared's crew sanded the entire deck by hand which I think is excellent. And they stained it 2 or 3x until the coat looked even. They fixed the existing door very well (it finally works again!) and the newly installed stairs and door look fantastic and work great. There were only a couple of minor things that could have been a little better. One was that we had expected the team to replace any boards as they saw fit during the sanding, but they initially replaced only the couple examples we called out. After a discussion with Jared, they did fix the remaining ones, but I think we had just expected that happen on their own after our initial discussion is all. Also on the newly installed steps, the text that's stamped on to the wood was installed face up instead of face down. So either we live with it and always see that text on the wood, or I sand it down and re-stain. To be fair, I didn't bring this up with Jared at all, and I'm sure they would've fixed it if we had asked. Later I also noticed that the spaces in between the deck boards doesn't appear to have been stained, so while the deck looks really good, if you look close you'll notice the missing stain on the spaces in between the boards. Not something we brought up to him either, so something we should've called out I guess. I would say that working with Jared, I feel they are a very fair, honest working company. I never at any point in time felt I was working with a dishonest company or contractor. It's just cosmetic things like I mentioned that kept me from saying the work was excellent is all.

Jared visited with us at an appointed time and reviewed with us the work to be done and the exact materials that would be used. He listened carefully to our ideas and desires and made a few suggestions, most of which we saw as improvements on our ideas and accepted. Jared gave us a very reasonable quote and we signed a contract. He and his crew arrived at the date and time scheduled. They worked expertly and efficiently and finished the job in one day, working until almost 9 PM. The finished work is impressive. It is so much better than what we had that I have been inviting friends and neighbors over to see it. There was one small detail that I wanted changed and Jared agreed to do it with no hesitation. He returned a few days later and took care of the detail to our complete satisfaction. I was very impressed with the quality of the work, the quality of the materials and the professional way they went about their business. I highly recommend Building Character as dependable, very reasonably priced, and providing an excellent product.

Jared was great to do business with. After meeting with him to discuss the design, he quickly got back to us with a detailed set of plans and 3D renderings showing what the deck would look like from multiple angles. As soon as the permits were approved, he and his crew got to work. They had the whole thing done in 3 days and it turned out even better than I had imagined. These guys are are true craftsmen and hard workers. I now have a beautiful deck that will no doubt add resale value to my house and last for many years to come. I would definitely recommend and have already referred them to two coworkers. Great job!

They came in on Friday and pressure washed the deck when it was, in my opinion, too darn cold to be out working with a hose! He did an amazingly thorough job of cleaning every angle of the deck. I can't get over the attention to detail on the railings inside and out! If it's not evident enough by now, I will be using and recommending these guys for a long time to come. After cleaning the deck Friday, they came back on Wednesday as scheduled and sprayed on the stain and sealant that I had purchased. Upon running out of what I had bought, they ran and bought matching to finish the job (I've seen a lot of companies who would call and say they can't complete without resources) and when I came home it was literally a brand new deck. We had this done to prepare for a big birthday party at the house this weekend and I can't even tell you how excited I am with the finish, attention to detail and the cost!

I was given an estimate, work was done on time. Good job washing and sanding deck, staining after deck dried. It looks great and should last the 5 years.
