Gary was working on my dad's neighbor's house, so my dad walked over and told him about the roof and chimney work I need done on my house. They chatted for a few, Gary told my dad the company is him and his sons, and he gave my dad a business card. We decided to call him a few days later. Gary said he was pretty busy for a few days, but would call us back when he could set something up, which didn't bother us. He called us back a few days later and we set up the estimate. Gary came right on time and took a look at our roof and chimney. He told us that the roof on the main house needed replaced but the roof on the addition really wasn't that bad. Both of the other (big name) roofing companies told us to replace the whole thing. There were a few other things, like ice and water shield, that he said we could do if we wanted, but he didn't put as "mandatory" like some other companies. He also didn't try to sell us the most sophisticated, lifetime warranty, three dimensional, "it'll be around after the tornado even though your house won't" kind of shingle. It was clear, he wasn't interested in selling us as much as he could just so he could make money, he just gave us a fair estimate for the work that needed to be done. He also offered to come out and put a tarp on the roof where we think our leak is. It took a little while to get the estimate, about 10 days. But the estimate was significantly lower than the others we got. We decided to we'd have Gary do the work. We feel he will give us a quality roof without having to pay an arm and a leg for a bunch of bells and whistles we don't need (when considering the age and value of our house). We changed a few things on the estimate, including adding the ice and water lock, and we are going to have the roof done on the addition as well. So Gary came back out to double check his measurements on the addition. We are now waiting for the updated estimate, but I still expect it to be about $3000 less than the other estimates we've gotten. I wish the estimates came back a little faster, but I know he's sorta a 1 man show, and I'm sure juggling current job(s) with organizing the details for new ones can be challenging. Regardless, it's a trade off I'm willing to make given his honest and professional opinion about what work we REALLY need done. Will update after second estimate comes in and work is done.
