From the planning stages through the final details of construction Steve Barber and his various workers displayed a high level of professionalism, and performed excellent work. Prior to beginning construction, an architect, Jeff Stawicki, who works closely with Steve, drew a careful design for the renovated porch and other work. After the design was completed, Steve and I reached a carefully worked out contractual agreement. All steps along the way were discussed with me and approved by me. The work was performed in a timely manner, and the results were an additional living area that enhances the feeling of my home, and meshes beautifully with the original design of the home. The new porch - effectively now a 4-seasons sun room - has plentiful windows that add light to the house and the adjacent kitchen, the spaciousness of a vaulted ceiling, and a design that resulted in a beautiful view of the woods near my home. The porch connects with my kitchen, and the floor was designed to make the porch/sunroom look and feel continuous with the kitchen, so that it feels like an expanded kitchen with a breakfast area. The woodworking was constructed by a master carpenter who builds for Steve and the results show all of the refined points and touches of his careful construction. A heating/cooling unit was installed by Rusk that allows the porch to be comfortably enjoyed year around, and was part of the careful planning that entered into the porch's design. Few adjustments were required along the way since the planning was careful, but the ones necessary were reasonably-priced and handled quickly, and in the proper manner with a written order. A couple of other touches were needed on my home during this time when exterior shutters started breaking off, and Steve was able to repair and replace those for me while doing the porch rebuilding. Communication was excellent throughout the project; Steve makes himself very available to his clients and is gracious about talking through concerns or coming by to review any concerns that arise. He is very 'hands-on' with his projects, stopping by the work site to review everything regularly. My project also involved coordinating with a couple of subcontractors of my choosing, with whom I had previously worked, and Steve and his crew worked graciously and pleasantly with those other contractors. Construction was completed in a timely manner but there was nothing hurried about the work; care was taking with electrical wiring, insulation, and all of the details. Steve clearly takes pride in offering his clients/customers excellent, careful work. Perhaps one might pay a little more for a porch by Barber Construction than for some of the pre-fabricated porch offerings out there, or for a construction by some other smaller contractors, but I believe that the quality and attention to detail warrants the extra cost. I see this as a valuable, durable, addition to my home, one that will enhance the quality of my day-to-day enjoyment of my home, and also objectively adds to the value. I also trust Steve to keep his warranty commitment; if anything truly problematic showed with the new structure, I know that he would not 'disappear' on me, but would return to correct the problem. A number of people who have seen the porch, both contractors and friends, have commented that it is an inviting space, that they can imagine sitting out there with a cup of coffee and a good book, enjoying the beautiful view of the woods. The space has a great feel to it. I don't think I could expect much more than that.
Description of Work: Rebuilt a porch from the footers upward; also reconstructed the patio underneath and the hardscaping on the right side of the house - new stairs, new patio under porch, new retaining wall, adjustments for proper drainage.

This general contractor apparently believes in rework and is not professional. He and his sub-contractors show lack of respect to property. Concrete slab was poured for foundation, but there was damage to existing driveway and sidewalk from concrete truck. In addition, sub-contractors required electrical service. Electrical service box was set up, but sub-contractors did not close weather tight cover at end of work day and box filled up with water. This resulted in additional out of pocket expense to replace outlets. Barber was told to halt construction for one week due to homeowner availability. Despite being told no construction, majority of the project was completed during the week we were unavailable. This included framing, wrapping, and roof with shingles. Unfortunately, the work done while we were gone did not meet our expectations. Due to Barber completing the roof work while we were gone, this resulted in rework for him and his sub-contractor. They had to return over a weekend to remove the work they originally completed and build again to our specifications. One of the main reasons we chose to work with Barber was his experience with older homes and we were trying to match the architectural detail of the garage with the house (our previous garage's roofline mirrored that of the house). Sub-contractor relieved himself on the newly built garage. Barber was informed of the issue, but must not have communicated to contractor because there was evidence and odor of a second occurrence. Door lock set was installed on entry door. Keys to the lock set were left in the open for anyone to take. Arrangements were made for sub-contractor to return during business hours. For whatever reason, Barber's sub-contractor could not make it on the scheduled day. Instead of telling homeowner the truth, Barber placed blame on the homeowner that sub-contractor could not gain entry to garage because door was locked. Upon homeowner arriving home to check, garage door was not locked. Lesson learned, hire a builder next time and not a general contractor.

WE SPENT ALMOST THREE YEARS TRYING TO FIND SOMEBODY TO TAKE ON THIS PROJECT AND THE BIDS RANGED ANYWHERE FROM $2,000 TO $45,000. MOST CONTRACTORS WOULD GIVE US AN ESTIMATE, BUT NEVER TELL US WHAT WAS INCLUDED IN THAT PRICE TAG. STEVE BARBER WAS THE FIRST PERSON THAT LOOKED AT THE PROJECT, GAVE US A WRITTEN ESTIMATE OF TIME AND MATERIALS, DREW UP THE PLANS, PULLED THE PERMITS, AND ACTUALLY TALKED KNOWLEDGEABLY TO US ABOUT WHAT WAS INVOLVED. HE IS A PLEASURE TO WORK WITH AND STRIVES FOR EXCELLENT CUSTOMER SERVICE. THE CREW HE SENT TO WORK ON OUR PORCH WAS ABSOLUTELY INCREDIBLE. TODD IS AN ARTIST AND BUILT EVERYTHING FROM SCRATCH, EVEN MAKING OVER 90 SEPARATE CUTS FOR EACH ONE OF OUR THREE PILLARS. HIS WORK IS ABSOLUTELY PHENOMENAL AND CONTINUALLY DRAWS COMPLIMENTS FROM ALL OF OUR NEIGHBORS. THE CREW ARRIVED ON-TIME EVERY MORNING AND CLEANED UP THEIR WORKSITE EACH NIGHT. THERE JUST IS NOT ENOUGH SPACE TO TELL EVERYONE HOW THRILLED WE ARE WITH OUR NEW PORCH AND THE PEOPLE WHO WORKED ON IT!
Description of Work: COMPLETELY DEMOLISHED OUR 2-STORY FRONT PORCH AND BUILT A NEW ONE FROM SCRATCH. THIS INCLUDED NEW STEPS, RAILINGS, PILLARS, ELECTRIC/LIGHTING, ETC. THE TASK WAS TO MAKE THE NEW PORCH LOOK 'JUST LIKE THE OLD ONE', WHICH WAS ORIGINAL TO THE HOUSE, BUT ALSO ADD A BIT MORE STYLE AND FLAIR. THE TRICK WAS STAYING TRUE TO THE HOUSE WHILE ADDING SOME MODERN-DAY UPDATES. STEVE BARBER AND HIS CREW SURPASSED EVERY ONE OF OUR EXPECTATIONS.

STEVE BARBER IS A CONSCIENTIOUS PROFESSIONAL THAT YOU DON'T OFTEN FIND IN THE CONTRACTING BUSINESS. WE HAD A GREAT EXPERIENCE WORKING WITH STEVE AND HIS CREW. HE WAS PROMPT, COURTEOUS, AND WORKED TO ENSURE OUR SATISFACTION. WHEN THERE WAS AN ERROR WITH THE ARCHITECT'S DRAWING, STEVE AGREED TO FIX THE ERROR ON HIS OWN DIME, SIMPLY BECAUSE HE WANTED A SATISFIED CUSTOMER. HE CALLED US TO KEEP US APPRISED OF PROGRESS ON A REGULAR BASIS. HE COORDINATED ALL THE SUB-CONTRACTORS AND SCHEDULED DELIVERY OF THE MATERIAL. HE ALSO OBTAINED THE NECESSARY PERMITS. I WANTED HIM TO SERVE AS GENERAL CONTRACTOR AND HE DID AN OUTSTANDING JOB. THE QUALITY OF THE WORK WAS EXCELLENT, TOO! THEY DID A REASONABLE JOB OF MINIMIZING DAMAGE TO THE YARD AND CLEANED UP AT THE END OF EACH DAY. THEIR PRICE WAS HIGHER THAN I HAD HOPED, BUT I WAS WILLING TO PAY A LITTLE MORE FOR A QUALITY JOB. I COULD NOT BE MORE SATISFIED! I WOULD HIGHLY RECOMMEND STEVE BARBER CONSTRUCTION. THEY DO GENERAL CONSTRUCTION JOB
