Jeremy Klaene came out and gave me a quote to rebuild the upper half of my chimney. He was on time, knowledgeable, and professional. He gave me an honest estimate of the amount of work needed and didn't try to insist on too much work, nor propose going cheap and doing too little. He offered a reasonable choice of materials and put together a reasonable work plan. Out of four bids that I got for this job, Klaene's bid was the most expensive for the amount of work proposed. I ultimately ended up selecting the second most expensive bid instead of Klaene, but Klaene's proposal was still quite reasonable.
Description of Work: Klaene came to my home to examine a chimney in need of repair and to offer an estimate of work required and cost.

A family member ran into the brick center column of our three car garage and destroyed it. I found that these 22 year old bricks were not available anymore and I only had twenty six bricks left from when the house was built. So, some of the old bricks would have to be salvaged and reused to complete the job. I had a hard time finding a Contractor that felt he could do this job! The job was completed in a very reasonable time, by the Klaene Crew. A+ job!
Description of Work: The left and right garage door lintels were supported and the damaged center column was taken down. The salvageable bricks were hand cleaned, including the half bricks. The column was rebuilt with the saved and supplied bricks. The garage doors (2) framing was reset and the damaged facer boards were replaced. The garage doors and tracks were relubricated and readjusted, as required. The work and the work area was cleaned spotlessly.

Saitisfied with the original work. They gave us the estimate in pieces. Tearing out and replacing some sidewalks and also foundation repair. We called them again a year later for the sidewalk work and they never returned the phone call.

Called Klaene to come out and give an estimate and scope for water seepage causing damage to wall plaster in bedroom adjacent to chimney. Rep came out proptly. Very courteous, recommended tuckpointing and waterproofing whole chimney as the "nuclear option" after I told him I had already had the chimney reflashed by the roofing company. I also asked for a full coverage chimney cap since the chimney did not have a cover on it. Crew came within 7 days and was very professional and courteous. Scaffolding was installed, work was completed in two days. They made a perfect color match to the nearly 100 year old mortar, and replaced a couple of damaged bricks, tuckpointed from top to 5 ft below the soffit, and waterproofed entire chimney . The best news is the problem was fixed. Between the reflashing and the chimney work, I ended up spending close to $3500, which was painful, but problem was solved. Good workmanship, efficient work practices, pleasant people to work with. Good cleanup.
Description of Work: House is a 1917 bungalow. Had wall plaster "bubbling" in bedroom next to chimney. I had already had the chimney reflashed and repaired the plaster, but the water seepage kept on causing the plaster and paint to "bubble". I called Klaene based on reviews I read on Angies List. After hearing the symptoms and inspecting the situation, I had my chimney tuck pointed, water proofed, and a new stainless steel full coverage cap installed.

They came out promptly after my initial call to scope out the job and provided an estimate within a week as promised. That was in April. They said they could get to this job in late July/early August. Provided copies of workers comp and liability insurance upon request. I signed the contract and they confirmed timing. The work was performed in August. As far as I can tell the repairs looks fine. I was given two estimates-one to rebuild the chimney to match the corbeled work work on the original, the other to rebuild it straight up. I opted to spend the extra $1000 to match the original look. The rebuilt chimney looks nice. They reused the original bricks so no mismatch of brick color and used tinted mortar to match original mortar. Only time will tell whether the repairs/waterproofing on the other chimney were effective in stopping leaks causing water damage on the third floor.
Description of Work: Tuckpointed and sealed one chimney that was causing water damage on the third floor. Also rebuilt part of another chimney on my 100+ year old house. This chimney had missing mortar, loose bricks, unstable areas. Required scaffolding to complete the work on the chimney being rebuilt. The estimate was comparable to others I received. I decided to go with Klaene since their specialty is chimney repair

The chimney looks beautiful and we are very satisfied with their service. I liked that they offered me an estimate, but did not require anything down until the work was finished. They were on time for the appointment and finished the project in the timeline they suggested.

The crew was working on a house down the street and found time to come by look at the job. They set time aside, at the completion of the other job, to come by and do the minimal work. They even found brick in their warehouse that matched our 1920's home. Easy, prompt, and aesthetically pleasing work.

I had a great experience with the company and the guys who did the work. Their estimate was in the mid-range of the various companies I'd contacted. I went with them because they seemed friendlier and more professional than some others, and were very willing to work with my insurance company (which covered the cost of repairing the chimney needing serious repair). It was winter, and quite chilly, and I have a very tall house, so most of the time they were here the workers were either setting up or pulling down their scaffolding. The chimney work itself went quickly, and was done well. They even did a minor job in my basement, at the base of the chimney, at no extra charge, after I'd asked them their opinion on what I should do regarding the accumulation of brick dust in a few areas. I'd give a B for the price simply because this kind of work seems much more expensive than it ought to be. I don't think Klaene overcharged me personally, though. And I'd give them a B for responsiveness because the company took quite a while to set a project start date. The weather was the major reason for that. It was either snowy, or very windy, during the early part of the year, but I still think that Klaene could have stayed in better touch about their scheduling concerns. Nevertheless, these are pretty minor complaints given the quality of their work. I've since recommended them to a neighbor as well.
Description of Work: Two chimneys needed maintenance. One had been damaged by a tree limb and had to be rebuilt, and the other was just seriously weather-worn.

They called the night before and arrived a bit later than planned due to traffic but they called to inform me of the delay. They went right to work, took limited breaks, needed only water and electricicty and went about their business in a neat and orderly manner. Went over repairs with mewhen complete and left no sign of their being there except the improved appearance of the chimneys.

Mr. Klaene Sr. came out about five years ago and gave me a total honest answer and said it wasn't really his specialty, but to contact him when we were ready to do the stucco work. In 2008, his son came out and gave me the impression that we had extreme structural problems with our house. He said that it could cost several thousand dollars to fix. He really tried to make me feel like there was something complex with fixing our house, very complex and very difficult and made me concerned with my house. I can honestly tell you that I have had at least 10 other people come out and give me an estimate. Every other person said that our house was in really good shape and they were minor repairs. So I get this estimate, and it's not very detailed, it just says "repair all stucco per conversation" and it says $4,865. It was more than $4,000 more than any other estimate I got, and I just had the work done yesterday for $650. I do not say bad things about people, and it's not my nature, but I was absolutely appalled at how they were scamming us. Just prior to me calling all the other companies, I called Mr. Klaene Sr. at the end of March. I told him that we were finally ready to move forward with repairing the exterior of our house. He asked how much the estimate was for, and I told him about $5,000. When I told him that, he said he wanted to come out and see the work. He and his son came out, and they kept asking us for the original estimate. They must have asked us 10 times for the estimate. They left our property, and no more than two hours later they called us back to see if we could give them the estimate. We must have gotten three or four other phone calls every night since then from Mr. Klaene Sr. I finally picked up the phone after several days, and they said that it was going to be much more work than they thought but they would keep the price the same even though the job would be more complex. My husband finally said that we should get some different estimates since we both had a bad vibe about them. He then called back another time, and we had already gotten some other estimates. Every other person we contacted had an estimate between $600 and $800, maybe $1000. So the man calls back, and my husband answered the phone. Mr. Klaene asked "Are we a go?" My husband said "Your estimate is $4000 more than anyone else. No, we are not a go."

They first came and did a poor job. I called them again to totally replace what they did earlier. I had complained about it and a person came and put a patch. I complained again and this time around I had an entirely different experience. The gentleman who came was really good. The first time it was not designed properly, and this time everything has been done right. He did not charge me anything for this. I am very happy with the company now. They did the job when I was not around and did everything well. They even cleaned up after themselves.

Right from the start it was great. Bernie and his son came out as promised, actually they were a little late, but called in advance to let me know. Thoroughly examined the problems and made recommendations. Followed up with call to describe the work to be performed and cost. Scheduled the work. They kept everything very neat and clean. Things were actually cleaner after they left then before they started. This was a big job, however they did a fantastic job.
Description of Work: Had lot of cracking in mortar in chimney. They cut our all the cracked joints and tuck pointed them. Chimney was painted, I provide the paint and they repainted the chimney. This was especially helpful due to the chimney hight - they had to use scaffolding to do the job. Also, had signficant cracks in foundation. They cut our the cracks and patched them. Then painted the house foundation so every thing matched.

The men used scaffolding two stories high, hauling their equipment and buckets of bricks up and down countless times. I half expected to see/hear things tossed off the roof to ground level, but these men were professionals and took no shortcuts. They thoroughly cleaned out (more like excavated) the collection trap located in my dank basement. They even hauled out the buckets of waste material with them! When a question arose about which bricks should be used to rebuild it, they got their office on the phone and I spoke with the owner's son, who explained the pro's and con's of new bricks vs. the old bricks that I had originally requested (I believe in reducing, reusing & recycling.) Taking several factors into consideration, I chose to go with new bricks, which they provided at the same price as the old bricks. I decided to have the chimney spray sealed which was an add-on to the original job description. Again, the owner's son spoke with me on the phone - I was quoted and agreed to a revised total before the additional work began. I am more confident now than I've ever been that there won't be any more water coming through my ceilings and walls!
Description of Work: Took apart crumbling brick chimney down to roofline and rebuilt it with new brick; sealed chimney surface above roofline; reattached decorative top. That's a very short description of a whole lot of work that was completed in two days. The chimney in question is used only to exhaust fumes from the gas furnace and gas water heater in the basement; there is no fireplace.

I spoke with Bernie, the owner, on the phone. He is a very confident and professional person and is very thorough in his explanations. It took a little while for him to come out and give an estimate, but I did say that it was not an urgent job. He inspected the opening, explained my options and provided me with quotes for each option. A week or so later, his two-man work crew came out and patched up the opening. Overall, the alignment and placement of the bricks and the evenness of the mortar is exceptional. Anyone who didn't know the work had been done would never be able to spot it. The color of the mortar doesn't quite match the existing mortar, but I think probably has more to do with the fact that my brick was previously painted white then sandblasted, so the brick and mortar has a faint milky white haze over it. I didn't ask them to replicate this, though. Also, this was expensive. Not sure it was completely worth the price, next time I'll get other estimates.
Description of Work: Installed 3-4 bricks in an opening left by the removal of an out-of-commission oven vent. They used spare bricks that I provided which match the existing house bricks.
