The project exceeded all expectations. We were very concerned about the complexity of the project, keeping the costs on budget, as well as addressing concerns over multiple adjoining neighbors. Outdoor Design Build, LLC did an incredible job. And, the follow-ups post the completion has demonstrated the total professionalism of David Underhill and his team. I would recommend their work to the most serious potential clients.

All went well and we have a beautiful show piece in our backyard.
Description of Work: Design and build fireplace with attaching grill and refrigerator. Also, design and build an outdoor fire pit with a seat wall, steps, landscaping and lighting. In addition to all of this topped it off with topsoil and sod to compliment the area.

It went very well, the crew was great to work with and David was very responsive. David works with a Landscape Architect that is really good at providing ideas to get the project started. David's team started & finished the project very close to the estimates provided. The quality of the work is excellent. David and his team worked with us to address the couple mid-project changes that seemingly always come up once you get into the work. We were very pleased w the outcome. We've had lots of neighbors and friends comment on how excellent the outdoor space looks and value it adds to the house. Nice work David and Outdoor Design Build team!
Description of Work: David Underhill & his Outdoor Design Build team built an outdoor living space w a 26x20 ft roof and drop down patio in place of our prior decks. The outdoor space is excellent, my wife and kids LUV IT, and it will be perfect for hosting parties and watching sports!

Outdoor Design Build designed and landscaped our first home, so when it was time to rework our front lawn I knew David Underhill was the right person to call. After working with several contractors it is refreshing to communicate with David. He returned my call immediately after I left a message the first time I called. Every time I called, email, or requested a visit he quickly responded. He was able to provide helpful feedback while respecting my budget. His employees Manuel, Scott, and Rick are top-notch quality workmen and we're all very respectful to me and my family. Our outdoor home appearance went from drab to beautiful. I am so grateful we found ODB and hope to use again in our backyard one day!

I recently mistakenly placed a review meant for someone else attached to Outdoor Design Build. And through my process of correcting it, I came in contact with Dave Underhill who runs Outdoor. I am writing this review because it so great to meet people like Dave who is professional and understanding of the mistake I made. His communication left me wanting to let others know that I am sure if you get the chance to work with him, it would be a good experience. For someone to be that gracious in dealing with a negative situation says a lot! Thanks Dave! Looking forward to having an opportunity to use your business.

David made the process as close to painless as a home construction project can be. He was responsive and quickly answered any questions we had. All members of his team were polite and respectful of the fact they were working on someone's home. The level of workmanship was top notch in all aspects of the job. I would gladly recommend Underhill Outdoor Design Build and each of his team members individually. Quite possibly the best compliment we have received from our neighbors was, " It looks like it has always been there." You can't ask for much more than that in a project.
Description of Work: The Underhill Outdoor Design Build team replaced our worn out asphalt drive with a new paver drive and walk. He also constructed a new portico over our front entry.

We undertook a large project in adding an outdoor living space to our house. After getting quotes from a few vendors, David stood out from the rest in his professionalism, pricing and design assistance from Gayle. We were able to meld the ideas of what we wanted and turn them into a product that both looks good and fits within a budget. We had all the confidence that the project was going to turn out great before the project even started. Once we had everything planned out and a contract in place, Nick was assigned to take care of our project. Once he was one the job, he stayed on the job and took care of everything. We would touch base at the end of each day and make any field decisions needed and keep things rolling. I had planned on building my own deck stairs and they were very accommodating on letting me know what needed done so it would not hold them up. And at the end of the project everyone walked away happy. And we are starting to enjoy our patio now in the spring. What really sets David apart from other landscape contractors is his planning and coordination. As some of the other reviewers have stated you want to get an early start in getting the project under contract. Just like all good contractors right now, they have a lot of work and weather can wreak havoc on getting things started and moving. But with good thought and effort ahead of time it is well worth any wait to get the project you had dreamed of.

Dave and Gayle collaborated on a design to transform our yard. Then Dave took over and had to remove a number of trees, do difficult grading on a very steep lot. The backyard is amazing and Dave was very responsive throughout the whole process. He was very professional and on top of things. His crews were very professional and polite. We are very ,very happy with our backyard, fire pit and patio.
Description of Work: Cleared Backyard Trees, Graded very difficult yard with drainage issues, Installed patio, steps, fire pit and landscaping and landscaping lights. Referred to good subs for the electrical, landscape irrigation and other work. Manage the work and made sure it was on track and done at high quality.

Dave Underhill did an excellent job from day one. First of all, we are perfectionist. Although, I like to think this is a "blessing", I have to figure that our "blessing" is a giant pain for builders & landscapers. Secondly, we do not have a clue our outdoor design and we felt out of our league on a project this size. We needed help! Dave Underhill took immediate ownership. He used a Landscape Design Architect to help us create our vision. Poor designer had to come back to our home several times. She meticulously walked our yard, made suggestions, discussed sun-light, how water in our yard drained. We discussed in great detail to endless possibilities for our yard while always respecting our "budget". Event after all the design discussion, we changed our minds several times. Dave never seemed bothered, or frustrated, he simply wanted us to get exactly what our family wanted. The Designer sent us the plans. The plans were very detailed drawings. Every bit of the design was on paper. Specific number of plants, measurements and locations. It really helped us visualize the project. Dave suggested that shop the designs and get multi bids on our project. He truly wanted us to feel comfortable with his quote. Once the project began, it took about two weeks total. His crew was solid, especially Rick. Super nice guy and super professional. I did not bother them much, however when I popped out to say "hi" they were always extremely friendly and took time to answer my "novice" questions. I strongly recommend ODB if you are looking for a "custom" project to be completed at your home. Give OBD an opportunity. His Facebook and Website are a great example of the quality work ODB does. Check-it out.

The overall outcome was fantastic, I can't complain at all about the resulting deck and patio. The patio cost was more than reasonable, but the deck was a bit high (David warned me ahead of time), so if you want to manage multiple contractors you can find someone else to build the deck and have David do a patio. The only annoying part was what felt like a few nickel and dime situations, the base price didn't cover specific items which I felt like should have been included, so the cost increased as we went on. Be sure to check all of the details before agreeing to a price or comparing contractors to make sure everything you want is included. David gets very busy, make sure the job is fully completed before you provide final payment. If you miss any punch list items he's more than willing to come back but it could be weeks.
We couldn't have been more pleased with the work. A+! You get what you pay for. The owner and crew were always responsive via email and phone; and always were prompt, professional and courteous. From the very beginning, Dave, the owner was honest with us and recommended we work with a Landscape Architect (something other companies never suggested). He was so right and that was one of the most important aspects. Once we decided to use ODB, Dave worked with us the whole way through on monitoring progress and working through design modifications. His crew were very polite and professional. End result was well worth the investment. I am trying to think how we can use them again!
Description of Work: Built an outdoor living space (stone paver patio, deck, roof structure, retaining walls, driveway).
The backyard looks fabulous and is much more usable than our previous unruly brick patio and scraggly yard. We worked with his landscape designer who helped us map out a functional, realistic plan for our space. David's team did the work quickly and completely. They re-graded the lawn, added a brand new paver stone patio, added a partial fence, and installed all the landscaping. They were happy to help us with random asks, too, like when we wanted to add a swing halfway through. David was very communicative throughout the process and you can tell he is very invested in each job. Some issues did come up (for example, some of the patio settled given some grading/compaction issues) but David always addressed and corrected quickly. We had David come back a few months later to re-do our crumbly walkway with new pavers. We have received lots of compliments from neighbors ever since!
Description of Work: David helped revamp our backyard by putting in a new patio and landscaping. He later re-did our front walkway.

We love our new patio. It transformed our backyard. We heard about David Underhill and Outdoor Design Build from a friend of a friend. We saw the patio they built and when we met David decided to go with his company. As we sat down and talked to Gayle, she designed almost the exact patio we wanted. With a few changes we had the perfect design. It was fun and interesting to watch Gayle create a great drawing while she talked with us and asked questions. We had 2 very large trees removed. And the existing deck taken down. Manuel and his crew then built the patio, walls, fire pit and built in grill. All the guys were very nice and when we wanted to make a change during the construction they did so with no problems. Some of the crew even showed up and worked in the rain under an umbrella. Now we have a beautiful patio, fire pit and new built in grill with landscaping surrounding it. We are confident that if any problems arise with any of it, David will take care of it. He is very easy to work with and always made us feel that our patio was the most important job they were working on. We would recommend this company to anyone wanting a new patio.

Everything went very well. Everyone was responsive, helpful and very nice. Everything looks beautiful. I couldn't be happier with how the yard looks.
Description of Work: Planted and landscaped for spring after new pool built in fall.
We couldn't be more pleased with the work they did. It was quite complicated as it entailed extending the existing upper deck, leveling the lower level, placing new stone flooring, building up stone walls for additional seating, installing a neat water feature, landscaping, designing and building a built-in grill, and finishing it with a cedar pergola. It was a bit pricey but well worth it!

We started researching our landscaping project about six months before our actual installation because I wanted to have a lot of time to think through our ideas and get several bids to make the best decision for our needs. I read through a lot of the reviews on Angie?s List and I was impressed with what David Underhill?s customers all had to say about their projects. After meeting with David, I met with Gayle Frazer, the landscape architect, and she incorporated our ideas and goals into a plan with multiple options. Gayle was great to work with as she was extremely professional and knowledgeable but also very patient and helpful with our ideas. I liked that she gave us several options for the trees and plants (all within our needs for sunlight and deer resistance) because I later went through the various suggestions and picked what I was most interested in having for our backyard. With the design for our backyard in hand, I was able to solicit bids and decide who I would pursue for our installation. We chose Outdoor Design Build because the price was competitive and I really felt confident that the installation would be done correctly and that if there were any issues or questions, that David would be someone with whom I would be comfortable working. That was absolutely the case. Prior to the project I had a lot of questions and we modified our plan a couple of times. Each time I reached out to David with questions he was responsive and professional and when I had questions over the course of the project, he was attentive to the issue at hand and it was obvious to me that his first goal was to do quality work which we would be happy with. Working with the foreman, we made a few minor changes during the installation and David was accommodating at adjusting to our needs but also gave us good advice on some of our landscaping decisions which I still appreciate because they saved us some money and really added to the look of our backyard. The foreman on our project was Nick and he was extremely skilled and talented in not only the installation but in seeing potential areas where we could make slight modifications to the plan to either make the design even more attractive or to ensure that the run off would drain correctly and not upset the plants or patio. The proof of his expertise was evident right from the start when we had several heavy rains during the installation and the gravel foundation and later the landscaping and mulch stayed completely in place with no puddles or mud ever on the patio. It really impressed us as did the precision of the cuttings on the pavers and steps. Nick and his team were also professional and easy to work with and to have at our home. Our patio and landscaping were installed about two months ago and there isn?t a day that goes by that we don?t enjoy them and appreciate the beauty and the transformation to our yard. We would absolutely use Outdoor Design Build again and we really appreciate their work at our home.
Description of Work: We had our backyard regraded and added a patio, seating wall, natural stone steps, steppers and extensive landscaping including several large and medium sized trees.
David (owner) and his crew were quality minded and delivered a beautiful result. Mother nature didn't want to cooperate and ODB had to deal with a lot of rain through the project, but they kept us in the loop with progress. The couple of small fixes we had were addressed quickly and without any controversy. Most importantly David went the extra mile in dealing with a difficult neighbor, and their concerns, by personally communicating with them and addressing issues.
Description of Work: New deck, paver patio, regrade of yard, and landscape plantings.
David is extremely responsible and professional. We have a gorgeous poolside gazebo with a wet bar that was 1960s. He had to tear out all of the old stuff without messing up the gazebo, which is made of redwood that you cannot get today. Then he installed custom cabinets and granite countertops that were made on site to fit perfectly the not so square and not so straight old spaces in the gazebo, install new plumbing, and rewire the entire site for electronics, phone, new plug on countertop, etc. We are absolutely delighted with this entire project.
Description of Work: Removed old wet bar from poolhouse, and installed custom made cabinets, granite countertops, new electrical wiring throughout.
David is a conscientious and diligent project manager. With few exceptions he communicated changes well and described their impact on the overall project. There were exceptions, as one would expect during such a project, but rather than confrontational (as another customer described) we found David simply to be a tough negotiator. He has a business to run and as such he's trying to make money and provide a living wage for those who work for him. Some of those negotiations were decided in our favor, some in David's. The point is, David listened well and when the facts aligned with us, he acknowledged that. When they lined up with him, we bit the bullet. But all told, the final price was only modestly over the original budget. But the most important matter is the result. David's specialty is building hardscapes whose design complements or mimics the design of older homes. And that is exactly what we got, right down to the use of matching cedar on all the siding and trim (our entire house is cedar) and beadboard ceiling and eaves that match the house's original. David's crews - demolition, landscape, masons, carpenters, and electricians - are all conscientious craftsmen, even perfectionists. They treat your house as if it were theirs.
Description of Work: ODB ( David Underhill) was a hands-on general contractor from project beginning to end. The designer David regularly works with created a beautiful vision. David was the logistician coordinating architectural drawings, city inspections, and the various crews required for our project. In the end, we now have a 13 by 16 screened-in porch, a paver patio, a wrap-around walkway, a new outdoor tool shed, and a re-landscaped terrace beyond the porch and patio. Before, there were a small 4 by 7 porch and the concrete slab of the long-gone garage built in the 20s. In other words, we now have a beautiful outdoor living space where once there was concrete and a useless appendage.
At David's suggestion, we first worked with Gayle Frazer to design our backyard makeover. Gayle did a phenomenal job incorporating our goals with the design, which we were then able to bid to various companies. Initially David was most professional, responsive & competitive so we chose him to bring it to life. We were a little apprehensive as he was a general contractor but thought maybe that was best to bring in all the various expertise we needed to do the job. Similar to other posts, the start & finish timings promised were aggressive & unrealistic. As for the various expertise we needed, David basically hired one guy to do all the work. The custom deck design was engineered on the fly & with the Home Depot deck building kiosk, resulting in a deck that looks like it was built by an amateur-deck rails & slats don't line up, footers stuck out past the footprint, posts come together at weird angles, gaps where there shouldn't be, lattice not well secured, wood was split all over before construction even complete. Not a quality job at all (I intentionally didn't provide a review at first for fear I couldn't be constructive but 2 years later, we are still pretty unhappy if we look closely at our deck). The pavers that outline the gravel patio were ok but already not level. Some attention to detail lacking there too but mostly because the job was so rushed at the end due to poor planning on the deck. We had to demand expansion joints be added to the concrete patio after the fact. And the final straw that warranted the overall D rating: my highly unprofessional argument with David at the end of the already disappointing job about the $15 cost he credited me after not planting one of our $50 line itemized annuals. I'll also mention David was fairly confrontational as we were voicing concerns & frustrations throughout the build, not the customer service oriented attitude I'd have expected.
Description of Work: Complete backyard makeover - remove existing patio, new custom deck, new gravel & concrete patio, landscaping.

Response from Outdoor Design Build LLC
As with any small business, you cannot please every client. When you are dealing with mother nature and, in this case, pressure treated wood based off of a client's budget, a project may not be perfect. Pressure treated wood dries out, twists and turns, and often splits. For these reasons, we recommend composite decking with aluminum railings which results in a different outcome. To receive this review after 2 years does not seem fair especially given what was affordable for the client. The material was not inferior, nor was the workmanship. Pressure treated wood is not a material that stands up over the test of time and requires maintenance by the consumer. We cannot control what a client does after completion of a project (ie - if you don't water plants they will not survive, if the deck was sealed, it will dry out). The clients were happy at the time and even sent the following email - Hi David, Sorry for the delayed response. We had a busy weekend. Not sure about the raised box. Do you have a recommendation? Once the kids go to bed I will send a detailed list of all that remains to be finished. In general, we are happy but feels like there's quite a bit of details to be wrapped up, at least a full day's worth. Thx, [Member Name Removed] In addition, weather always plays a role in the commencement and completion of a project. For this reason, we include in our contracts an approximate start and finish timeframe with the disclaimer that it is contingent upon weather. The following is what was listed in this client's contract - Start Date: Beginning of November (start), Middle of November, no later than Thanksgiving (end), 2013 (weather permitting) Per our contract, a client has a year of warranty on the project. We replaced dead shrubs and some split posts in the summer of 2014, well before their warranty was up. At that time, the client gave no indication that there were any issues. Again, to state the above by the client so long after the project was completed certainly questions what the intention was of this review. If the client truly was dissatisfied, payment would have come into question which never happened. As a smaller business owner that takes pride in pleasing clients as indicated by our Angie's List Reviews, we would have appreciated knowing this soone. We cannot address dissatisfaction if we are unaware of it.

Overall great, little hiccups due to weather. I chose this provider due to previous reviews and knowing I wanted someone reputable due to the price of the project. David was prompt and delivered on what he said he would do. I liked he requested/requires a landscape plan, so all parties understood the scope of the project. Rick, Brad and Manuel were very personable while on the job and asked for feedback when design elements did not seem to fit. The project did run long due to the extreme winter weather that seemed to drag on, but was completely understandable and the disruption was minimal. A few months after completion I reported 2 issues that arose, Dave was prompt and resolved them in a timely manor.
Description of Work: Expanded driveway, installing new retaining walls and concrete driveway. Installed stone steps with paver landing and capped existing steps with pavers, installed new stair railings. Replaced small landscape retailing wall and stepper path, replaced and expanded concrete patio with pavers. Planted trees, scrubs/perennials in new berm area and thought out property. Coordinated removal and re-installation of house gas meter/line and yard pole gaslight.

Ours was not a major project like many of theirs, yet David and his team still gave us their full attention to make sure it was done right. David subcontracted tree removal and they did a great job too. After the trees were removed David and his team performed some significant earthwork in our backyard to flatten it and at the same time improve drainage. David and his team were professional, on time, and thorough. Even though our project was small and didn't require a landscape architect, David still added value by making suggestions we hadn't considered. We are very happy with the work performed and would easily recommend Outdoor Design Build for your needs.
Description of Work: We had outdoor design build help us redo our backyard to make the space more livable. They removed trees, removed part of a man-made hill, flattened the backyard to make it more useable for our kids and improved drainage.
Everything went terrific. The fireplace and patio are amazing and the backyard looks better than we imagined. Everyone who came to our home to work for them were extremely professional and very nice. We often took David's advice during the project and his ideas worked out great. Rick was very friendly and always helpful! Thanks to them we can not wait until the weather breaks so we can start to enjoy our new outdoor paradise! We would hire them again in a heartbeat!

Project took about a week to complete. Nick was the primary builder and Evan assisted him. Patio and wall turned out beautiful as both Nick and Evan where very maticulus with not only laying the pavers and building the wall, but also the grading and prep work. Both patio and wall are a curved design so there was a great deal of cutting of pavers. Nick as very informative and always provided feedback on the process and what they where trying to accomplish that day. Job was completed with them providing additional top soil where needed, grass seed and straw. Site was completely cleaned up. Just need the grass to grow now. :) Nothing but compliments from neighbors and friends. Only negative was the starting date being pushed back due to jobs in front of mine. But the wait was worth it.
