Was enthusiastic about the job, and worked with us to nail things down to get the service & price we were looking for. The scheduling of the job was a little "as it can happen", but didn't end up being a big deal.

We have a long gravel driveway that descends steeply to the road. Like most driveways of this nature, it would wash out with heavy rains. Several years ago Stan reconstructed the base using rounded river rocks. Since then we have had only minor problems. Our neighbor's driveway isn't nearly as steep, and it continues to wash out. Over the years I have used them a number of times. They are very reliable and the work is performed very well. They have edged our gardens, renewed patches on our lawn, built a level platform for our tool shed, and provided landscaping materials for a variety of my own projects. They have wide assortment of salvaged materials, for instance I recently used some old street paving stones to build a retaining wall. A number of years Stan delivered a truck load of old granite curb stones which I used to build a garden wall. These weighed a ton each. Stan's way of operation involves a back-of-the-envelop calculation and a hand shake. Verbal contracts are reason to give pause, but Stan is an honest man and has always made good whenever we have had a misunderstanding. At times he has done much more than I had expected. His workmen are very hard working and highly skilled.
Description of Work: They added gravel, and edged our driveway. They also compacted the gravel on our front walk and widened a path I was building on the side of a steep bank going down to our woods.

It went great! They definitely came soon after it snowed and did a thorough job removing it. We'd hire them again only my husband bought his own tractor.

Overall I could not have been happier. Our initial agreement was verbal, and I was not comfortable that we were both on the same page. So I wrote up my understanding, which was not exactly what he had understood, so we worked out the differences and came up with a new quote that we both understood and were comfortable with. Part way through the work I did make some changes in what I wanted and we again worked out a new quote that we both understood. He did everything (and more) that he said he would do, and I paid him what I had agreed to. It worked out very well, and it looks great.....I'm waiting a bit to add the plants. To start with, Stan was at my house on a Saturday to take a look at my front beds and give me the quote, and he was able to start work two days later (Monday). Each day there were 2 to 3 workers there that worked very hard and did a wonderful job. Stan would drop by every so often to check on the progress and make sure all was going according to what I wanted. When I decided to make a couple changes in the plan that I had initially agreed to, Stan made the accommodations and the workers carried out the changes beautifully. By Friday it was complete except for a couple minor blemishes that I asked to be remedied. I paid Stan on Saturday, and Monday he was out again and not only fixed the blemishes, but also seeded and strawed the areas where he had spread the topsoil on the lawn as well as the lawn bordering the perimeter of the ties. That was not in our agreement, and although I offered to pay him, he would not take any money. He and his workers did a great job and it looks beautiful. I have some other projects that I need help with and I plan to use them again.
Description of Work: I have a huge multi-level bed in front of my house contained by railroad ties. It is 35-ish years old and needless to say the ties are disintegrating. I had Stan Perko come out and give me an estimate to replace the whole thing as it is. This entailed: removing the overgrown bushes and a large weeping cherry; removing the old railroad ties (in the back of the bed, they are 4 high); removing one level of the bed at the far end and turning it into a grassy area; digging new trenches for the ties and putting in a base of this gravelly/sandy stuff; replacing them with new (used) high quality ties; leveling the ties and anchoring them so they will last another 35 years; redirecting drains so they come out within the ties and are not noticeable; removing a few inches of the old topsoil and replacing it with a mixture of new topsoil and peat moss, preparing it for planting; hauling away the old bushes/trees/topsoil/railroad ties; spreading some of the soil from the bed we eliminated in the low areas of the lawn; and clean up after themselves.

I can't say enough good things about the owner of American Railroad Tie and Stone Company; his name is Stanley Perko. He is just such a personable and knowledgeable person. He brings his staff and shows them what to do so that we don't have to worry about the work. He checks on them regularly. His pricing to me is excellent. I really get my money's worth when I hire him. The crew just goes right about doing their work. They don't miss a beat. They don't bother me, they just work and the end result has always been wonderful. He prices his work fairly; we haven't got a quote from him on the ongoing job. In the past he has done stone work for us. He has laid the railroad ties. He also has laid mulch and has put in two stone walkways. He only charged us a total of $3200 for all that work. I would certainly continue to use them in the future.
Description of Work: American Railroad Tie and Stone Company is here working on our lawn right now. They have done stone work for us and has done lawn work for us in the past. They have also installed a railroad ties on our property line in the past. They made a flower garden for us on the property line to separate us from our neighbor's property.

The guy uncovered a problem that I had when he spotted that I couldn't do a certain type of work. I didn't use the company but they ended up saving me a lot of money. He was honest and I could tell that he knew what he was doing. I would use him because he appeared to be an honest guy. He looked highly competent. I think he had more skill than your average landscaper. He came out on a holiday, as a matter of fact on the 4th July, so he was very responsive. I would use him in the future if I needed to.

I was pleased with them since the workers were good. They were the least expensive ones compared to the others and the job that they did was fine. I didn’t have any elaborate work that other people wanted to do. The others wanted to make more out of it than what it was. However, American Railroad Tie and Stone Company did all that was needed. They were the ones who had offered the supplies for the materials and therefore, they were able to get the work done for less too. Other companies had to buy from somebody in order to get the supplies and they don’t because they sell the supplies. So that made it cheaper. They got the work done really quickly because they had two other projects at that time. It was all done in two weeks. I thought that I would have to wait till the end of summer. It turned out to be an improvement over what was there originally. There were certain times when they weren’t quite sure about things and they were asking my opinion. I gave them some opinion but it turned out wrong. They were there when they said they would be there. I would use their services in the future too.
Description of Work: I used the services of American Railroad Tie and Stone Company in last summer. They installed a retaining wall for me in the back yard. It used to be around a tree and the tree was no longer there. The retaining wall had fallen at one section and it needed to be repaired.

Overall, it was a very pleasant experience. Stanley came out almost every day to see how the project was going and to touch base with us. As I said, it did take a little more time than expected, but it was well worth the investment. They stuck to the price on the contract and kept costs reasonable when small projects were added. We did have a drainage problem after the patio was installed (they had installed a draining system) and we called to have it addressed. They were out there the same day, removed the bricks and regraded the patio to make sure it was draining right above the in ground drain. Since then (several months and hard rains later), the patio seems to be draining much better. We still have a small pool after a hard rain but it goes down quickly. We are very satisfied with the overall service and would recommend this company to others interested in this type of project.
Description of Work: We had our entire backyard transformed by removing our rotted railroad tie retaining wall that spanned the entire house and replacing it with large boulders. Marty and his team worked very hard and were creative and knowledgeable about where to place the boulders to make it look as natural as possible. They also put in a large brick patio (they used old paving bricks from Canton, OH) with a walkway on one side and stepping stones on the other side. Stanley and his team did an outstanding job. They were extremely careful about all our plantings that we wanted to save. They also installed a waterfall in the side of the hill. They did take a little longer than expected, but when we asked them to complete the project due to other projects being scheduled soon, they were very cooperative and finished in time. Because of the cost of the project (which was very reasonable, but still costly) we probably won't be going on vacation any time soon, but the backyard is such an enjoyable place to be that we have no problem making that our vacation spot for the next few years!

It went off without a hitch. I got a comment from my daughter about how much better they did the job than I had.
Description of Work: We have railroad ties between the sidewalk and the lawn which is about 18" higher than the sidewalk, and also along the driveway. The old ones had been purchased at this company about 15 years ago, and they were degenerating. I installed them myself, but I have also degenerated in the intervening time. I called the company again, spoke to Stanley Percal, who apparently is in charge of this area. He was very helpful, came out and gave me a quote. We worked out just what was to be done and how the charges were to be calculated. He sent a crew of 2 with the rr ties and some gravel for the base, and they did a very careful job, working steadily for 2 days. He also told me how to get the city (Shaker Heights) to take away the old ties which his men carefully stacked on the tree lawn.

The workers were quiet, very polite and worked diligently at a steady pace for 2 1/2 weeks. Each day Stan would stop by to check what was done, determine what needed to be done, and directed anything that needed a change. He was readily available by cell phone should a change be desired. He also made some good suggestions and allowed creativity(i.e.rounding a bed and patterning the walkway bricks)without extra charge. He didn't provide a sketch for the work, so we made a rough draft of our own. It evolved beautifully, and the steps and small patio on the top step turned out even better than we envisioned. His price was two to four thousand dollars less than the three quotes I had prior to his and the other quotes offered far less detail and fewer amentities than American RR and Ties. The crew started different times each morning as they stopped to pick up fresh supplies before coming, but worked steadily until 5:30 sometimes later each day.
Description of Work: They removed a low retaining wall, front planter, and terraced steps of collapsing railroad ties. They reterraced steps, walls, and planter with Versa-lock stones capped with matching versa-lok and sandstone caps to finish. They dug deep for a base and filled it with a thick layer of sandstone gravel. All digging was done by hand. They installed drains with pipe, gravel, cement caps and elbows next to the wall, redirected the flow of unsightly downspouts underground, then paved a brick walkway down the steps leaving space on each side for pocket gardens as directed.
