When we initially contacted Ray Arnold Masonry for an estimate we were pleased to see the gentleman brought a ladder and actually inspected chimney, he did not just eye-ball it from the ground. A few days later we received a detailed estimate on needed work and costs. On the night before the scheduled day we received a courtousy call reminding us the work would start at 8:00 the next morning. Caleb and Walker arrived as scheduled, introduced themselves and promptly began erecting their scaffolding and prepared the work area. They then chiseled away the cracked brick and deteriating mortar. A third gentleman, George, arrived and thouroughly inspected everything and began the restoration/rebuild of our chimney. They had carefully matched the 62 year old brick that needed replacement and preserved the original sandstone accent pieces. They matched the original details of the chimney's brick pattern when reconstructing it. It looks wonderful. The crew was quiet as their work permitted, no yelling and no swearing. They had no jobsite radio. No one smoked or chewed tobacco products. The three gentlemen were courteous to my wife and me and our little yappy dog. Their vehicles were parked so they would not interfere with our neighbors' routines. Afterwards everything in the work area was swept clean and hosed down. All material was picked up and the area looked great. Ray Arnold Masonry rocks!
Description of Work: The top three courses of bricks were starting to separate on our 62 year old chimney. The mortar was also disintegrating and needed repointing. Lastly, the top liner was cracked and needed replacing. This was beyond the capabilities of a 70 year old do-it-yourselfer...

The process went very well. The guys doing the work were very friendly and explained progress. Each night they cleaned up and roped off area. The finished walls look very nice. They repoured the top step and repaired all the small areas of the steps that needed some TLC. Looks great!

This is just a wonderful company that I would highly recommend, and use again. It's a family owned, third generation company and they responded and scheduled my small chimney job quickly. The two young workers were courteous, neat and helpful so it was a pleasure to have them. I also learned that it's a full service local construction company so I would like to use this excellent local resource again for other house projects in the future.

Larry, the owner, came last fall to give us an estimate and after reviewing the work felt he couldn't get it done before winter. He returned in the spring and removed the brick wall across the front of our porch which never matched the rest of the brick on the house, along with the step up to the porch. When he removed the step he told us that there was a good footer under it which he didn't anticipate in his estimate and lowered the price by $450. He recommended a brick that was not a perfect match to the used brick on the house, but an excellent complement.. He also recommended a sandstone cap and matching stair tread that looks great. Larry and his crew were neat, professional and prompt. He communicated with us constantly reagarding progress and a small weather delay. We would definitely recommend Ray Arnold Masonry.

It went very well. They called to let us know when they would be out, and came when they said they would. They gave us two options, about $600 difference --- the cheaper option was to go with cinder block with a few courses of brick where the window well was exposed, or replace as original, which was all brick. We decided to do the cinder block option. They were neat (as possible when moving dirt and cutting brick) and protected the window the well. They reminded us to close the windows on the side of the house they were working on to avoid getting dust in the house. They made one mistake --- they forgot to do the top few courses in brick, but they came out within a few weeks to fix it. This repair fixed a host of problems for us --- the water that was coming through and over the top of the window well was creating water problems in the basement, so we are very happy with the repair. We weren't sure about the cinderblock, but it has actually brightened the basement, so that turned out well also.

They are a really good company. I don't recall the cost, but it was fair. It was easy to schedule an appointment and they showed up on time. Two technicians came and were able to complete the work in one day. They cleaned up well after the job was complete. Everything went just the way it was supposed to.

I called on Saturday afternoon and left a voicemail message about what I needed and Larry Arnold returned my call 30 minutes later. Because our home is not far from him, he agreed to come out later that afternoon. Larry came to the house with his ladder and looked at what needed to be done for the chimney (replace the top 6 rows of brick) and front steps (all rows of front-facing, 11-bricks wide). He wrote up and presented his proposal by hand after about 10 minutes in the truck. We agreed to have his group perform the work because it seemed like a fair price and I liked him personally. To get started takes a 30% down payment, so I gave him a check before he left the house. He said the exact starting date would depend on the weather, but should be within the next 2 weeks. The weather was good that week and he called Tuesday to say they would be out to start early on Wednesday morning. During the repair work on the chimney he discovered that they needed to replace three more courses of brick than he originally thought, but only charged us for the additional bricks and not for any extra labor. They matched the original brick of the chimney and steps nicely with new brick, hauled away all debris and cleaned up nicely.

Larry Arnold was polite and punctual. He called to inform me when he found he would be a few minutes late to quote the job. He provided a quote and we agreed on a date to do the work. He and his son came on time and did good work, and put in extra effort to finish early when I found out we had other commitments. Both men were professional, friendly and courteous. He stayed within the quote. I am happy with the whole experience and have asked him to do another job for us.

We were quite disappointed with the job that was done originally because the color of the mortar was so different from the original. Some of the work was done sloppily. When we complained, Ray Arnold , the owner of the business agreed with our assessment of some of the work and he sent his men to and quot; make it rightand quot; and he also did some work himself.

Larry Arnold responded to my initial phone call immediately. He came out within a couple of weeks to look at the job and gave me an immediate written estimate. I can only assume the price was fair since I don't have much to compare it to. Larry's quote was a few dollars less than the verbal estimate I got from another Angie's List company who failed to submit the written estimate I asked for. The third Angie's List mason I contacted returned my initial call, but did not follow through as promised and did not return my follow up call. So of the three I contacted, Ray Arnold Masony was the most responsive. Larry seemed knowledgable and professional. Although the original chimney was red brick that had been painted white since before I owned the house, he recommended using a white brick instead. When I asked whether I could see a sample of the brick he planned to use, he suggested I visit the brickyard and select any Belden brick I liked without regard to any price differential. The brickyard manager asked who I was working with and, unsolicited, said they had worked with the Arnolds a long time and that I was in very good hands. The work was done within a few days of receipt of my 30% deposit. The crew finished in one day and cleaned up after themselves completely. I can't actually inspect the chimney since it is on the roof, but it looks good from the ground. They did a fine job of resetting the bricks that are at ground level. The bill was for the quoted price. Since they are also general contractors I asked Larry if he could also quote on some carpentry work. He indicated he'd have his carpenter call me. When that didn't happen, he referred my request to someone else, who is coming out to look at what I need this week.

I did not go with them. The price they quoted me was about $500. I did not use them because they weren't really recommending much work and the price was high. The other company I went with said they would do more extensive work for a similar price or an even lower price. When they came out, they spent a lot of time and were nice. I decided to call them when the problem ended up not being fixed, even though they were not the ones that did the work. I called them back and told them the situation and they pretty much told me that I should continue to work with the company that did the work and have them come back and fix the problem.
