He is not reliable and doesn't come when he is supposed to. He does real shoddy work. Concrete should slope an inch every ten or eleven foot. Mine slopes 12 inches in 11 feet. It is a ski slope. It is cracked, it has a grey patch in the red. The only way to fix it is to jackhammer it and do it again. He has no license or bonding or warranties. There's a code for how high your steps can be, between 7 and 8 inches; one of mine is 16 inches. He made seven appointments, and I had to stay home, to come and fix it, and he never showed up once.
Description of Work: Jim Byrd poured a big concrete patio for me.

The concrete cracked out of the saw marks in less than three weeks. My red concrete turned grey. In the 12ft way the concrete slopes 91/2 inches back to front. The cloths line pole he installed in the concrete has no drain hole in the bottom of it and it is at a 45 degree angle. The step he put in is a 14 1/2 in step. A standard step is actually 8 in. I have talked to him six times since the work was completed and he has yet to show and fix the problems.
Description of Work: I hired this company to jack hammer up a porch and install a new one with steps. This is changing my porch from 6ft by 20ft to 12ft by 20ft. I used red concrete to make it look like slate.

Response from Canaan Concrete
The original price was $1825.00 plus $400.00 for color/release/sealer. The original patio ended up being eight (8) inched thick. An additional $305.00 was charged with this member’s agreement for the rental of a hydro-hammer and additional labor for tearing out the patio. He even took our truck to Marion to pick up the rental equipment. The total job was for $2530.00 for the concrete. The member contacted us and advised that a small crack had developed in the concrete near the edge of it. He stated that he wanted me to come look at it and see if it was a problem. I went to look at it and the member’s wife and advised that Mr. Craig lyons had scaffolding on the patio three days after I was completed and one of his workers had dropped a large board or something that made a loud noise when it dropped onto the patio. The crack was noticed after that. The member was advised that there was nothing structurally wrong with the patio and yes it is probably a result of the construction worker dropping it the item on the patio. Since it had already cracked it would not crack anymore and it is such a hairline crack that with the stamping of the patio; you have to be right on top of it and looking for it to even notice it. They were advised to follow up the Mr. Lyons about it, since his worker is the one who dropped something on the patio. We have heard nothing from this member since that time until these papers came in the mail. He was so pleased with our work he referred us to one of his friends. Jim went and bided on a job for them and was awarded the job. The night before we were to start the job, the wife called and stated that we no longer needed due to the their being not so unhappy with the work we did for them. That was after Mr. lyons crew member dropped something on the patio and the crack was found. We lost a job that was close to $ 9400.00, due to this issue. 45 degree angle on clothes line. Jim did not place the clothes line in the concrete, he did that himself. We have pictures to prove that when we left it was still straight up in the concrete. The 14 inch step? Jim placed 2 steps not 4 steps down the hill. Each of those steps are 7 ~ inches. They were formed with a 2' x 8'. There was an original step there that he was going to cover with dirt for his new flower garden (pictures will show it), nothing new was placed that was 14 inches. The 7 inches of slope was discussed with the member because he no longer wanted steps to come out of his sliding glass door or his regular door on to the patio. He was advised the only way this could happen was to place that much slope in the patio. He agreed to that and when leaving the job he was completely satisfied with no complaints. As to the color, the color for concrete is not mixed on site; it is mixed at the concrete company. And his patio has 3 layers of sealer on it. The release is placed to be able to stamp it and is washed off before the sealer is placed. The remaining sealer is what gives the patio the look it has and is sealed in, thus why the sealer is used to bring out the color of the patio. As for the color not being set? The pictures show (time and date stamped) that the color when we left was the same and uniform. Did they spill something on it, ie. paint or any materials that they were using to rehab their porch or house after the concrete was completed? That is still not our responsibility. Ellis Bros. Bob Shaffer was out and inspected the patio, he stated (a letter from him is attached) that there is nothing wrong with the patio. He especially never said it had to be torn out. There also was a reprehensive from the color company, Increte that went and inspected the concrete. He as well said there is nothing wrong with the concrete. They will come if needed to support us.
